  5. As I mentioned in another post the Barnett solution for your early first gen is to replace the originals with a set from a 1957 sportster. These springs have both more load resistance and are slightly taller than the stock ones.
  6. Barnett sold me a set of springs for my 83 from a 57 Sportster (thier recomendation) that and new friction discs and it never slips now! A little more effort at the lever but it never bothers me.
  7. I took a look and I see that proportioning valve was removed and the second hole plugged. So I should be getting full squeeze there. I do already have SS lines. Maybe just another bleeding........
  8. So am I reading this right one of the ports from the brake master cylinder puts out less hydraulic pressure than the other? Perhaps this is why the rear delinked brake on my 83 puts out such poor performance? It has never been a big issue safety wise as most of the heavy work is done by the front but it would be nice to have a bit more bite when trail braking.

  10. I have the same system on my 83 and it works just fine! While I dont have any spare parts for it if I can answer any questions I will try. I have the original manual and stuff also.

  12. Can anyone tell me if the frame from a 86 to 92 would be the same as the 83 to 85. My frame broke!
  13. I bought an old mercury style carb stick from someone and when I used it today (1st time) it darn near sucked mercury into the manifold! I yanked the first and second tubes off just in time I think! I think I followed SOP? I warmed the bike, shut down, attached the hoses, started engine, and began to adjust 1and 2. I had bliped the throttle a couple times no problem and was teeking when 1and 2 started to continually rise. no change in engine noise though. Before I pulled the plug I noticed the Mercury had seaperated with air bubbles. Any clues? I'm baffled and I dont want to suck mercury in the engine!

  16. I came across this information while looking for other stuff and I have never heard this procedure or tool mentioned in regards to carb sync. Can anyone comment on this? The later models of Yamaha (1982 & newer) use a YICS ( Yamaha Induction Control System) which is basically a vacuum balancing system in the intake manifold. A gallery is located just below the intake passages connecting all four intakes together via small air passages (approx. 1/8" ) the gallery itself is approx. 3/8" in diameter and 16" long on the 1100's. ( one of these days I'll convert to metric )To balance the carbs and set the idle mixtures properly the YICS must be rendered deactive so a true vacuum can be established. A special tool is required to seal the YICS passages while this adjusting is going on. The tool incorporates three rubber hose sections to act as seals, they are located in such a way as to isolate the passages from each other. To use just remove the gallery plug, it's located on the left side of the engine just below the carburetor inlets, should be 12mm. Slide the tool all the way in until the fender washer come in contact with the tube. Now while holding the bent part of the treaded rod tighten the wing nut till firm. Hook up your gauges or carb sticks. Start the engine and allow to warm up. It is normal for the engine to idle slower than normal so you may have to increase the idle speed to 1000 - 1200 rpm. Now proceed to adjust the idle mixture on each carb for maximum rpm. should be approx. 1- 1/2 turns out. Sync. the carbs for even intake vacuum balance. Shut down and remove the gauges & YICS tool tighten the gallery plug to 100 inch pounds ( firm but not gorilla ) reset the idle speed and your finished!! How it works, tightening the wing nut squashed the rubber hose sections and causes them to grow in diameter sealing against the gallery walls. the section closest to the wing nut is positioned directly under the #1 cylinder passage sealing this on from #2,3&4 the second seal is set between #2&3 isolating these two and the end seal is between #3&4 so intake vacuum is now independent and not shared by the other cylinders. BTW the YICS system helps the cold start back fire that the non-Yics machines are prone to. You can achieve similar results on the older machines by connecting the carbs together. just get some rubber gas line and two tee connectors remove the rubber plugs from the balance tubes and hook the four carbs together using the tees on #2&3 and the rubber hose. You'll notice a slightly faster and smoother idle.

  21. Those are know here in Florida as Lovebugs and you want to get em washed off your paint as soon as you can. They tend to be acidic in nature and can ruin your finish. During the Lovebug season its not uncomon to see vehicles completely covered over the front end. When you hit one you are really hitting two because they are mating in air! Thus the name!
  22. I did mine last year and yes you do need to add some additional flow to the bottom of the system but I did mine with a hand drill. Just follow the instructions included to lay out the additional holes, use a punch to set the center and work your way up in drill diameters. Dont be skeerd it aint that hard!
  23. I did it myself. Not that difficult really, just time consuming! As far as the class system my bike is a standard and never had the compressor. I had previously replaced the air with progressive springs and I just kept those. Racetech recommended straight rate springs and if I ever get around to it I will try them also. Those guys really know their stuff IMHO.
  24. I did this swap and the racetech cartridge emulators on my 83 (swapped to 86 front end) Money well spent. Plus the new brakes are far superior to the old ones!
