    Good morning

    The speedo only increments in 1.5 mph segments. If you look closely when you turn the bike on, you'll see all of the bars light, and then disappear quickly, right to left. Since it is an LCD display (like a calculator), you can't have smooth movement - you light a segment at a time. No reason to take it to a dealer, this is by design. Heck, I don't watch the speedo that much, I prefer to watch where I'm going. Shift when it sounds right, not at a certain speed. BTW - the speedo is probably optimistic by 6-9%, just as an FYI.   3. Also went down through there in May, did the whole Parkway in two days. Be aware that if the weather is crappy, you'll want to stick to lower ground. We experienced fog that made the third bike in front of you all but invisible, including the 4-way flashers. Good time though!
  4. Glad to hear that you're both OK. It really does suck to hear that it was on a new bike. Damage doesn't look like much, maybe $1000? Or is there damage to the tank too ($800)? Good luck with the insurance company. Agreed that you should have them order parts and ride it until they're in.
  5. The horns are rated at 19A each and the relay is rated at 30A. I can't say that you'll melt anything, but those are your numbers to start your research with. Good luck - when they work (and mine has for close to two years, without fail), they're great. Let us know how you make out with having a pair mounted.

  7. If you are an AMA member ($39 if you're not, and you should be if you're a rider), you can get a Zumo 660 from Garmin for $640 or so. I just did that, received it on Wednesday...
  8. You could probably get that hooked up (electrically) in two hours, tonight. An hour total for removal/reinstallation of the fairing, and another hour snaking the wires and connecting them for power/audio. Quick and dirty for this weekend, tap into the aux power (cigarette lighter plug) on the left of the fairing. Switched power, 5A max (the Z660 has an inline 2A fus, so 5A should be fine as long as you're not hooking anythng else up to it, more than an XM/Sirius radio) and it's right there. After your trip you can then worry about running the power cable to the battery or a different fuse point that you might already have set up. If you wire it today you won't have to take the second unit, batteries, etc. You won't have to worry about charging it every night either. It really won't take that long, if you work at it (I had to take my fairing off again last night to disconnect the GPS from the Aux line since it was overpowering the Sirius with its silence). I started at 7 and was watchng TV around 8:30 or so. Mind you, I putzed around and rerouted a few other cables while I was in there, and also had a stubborn screw on the inside of the fairing on reassembly. Two, two and a half hours oughta be enough for the install, I would expect.
  9. It might be, but I just got my 660 yesterday (and all hooked up last night), and that thing has a little heft to it. I'd use the mount and get it hooked up real nice. It'll look nicer, too. I'd hate to see it pop off as you go around a turn and land on the tank while your hands were busy on the bars...
  10. If you can design your own graphics, you can use www.cafepress.com for tshirt printing. Not as inexpensive as silk-screening (and certainly doesn't help a fellow member that has the shop/skills), but quick turnaround and a quality product (along with the ability to get a mug to commemorate the event). Just another option if it comes down to it... Good luck!
  11. I think a big reason the SUVs are seen doing stupid things is the invincibility factor. It's well known that in an accident, the SUV wins. That's why people buy them (and for their kids). But, that means that they don't pay near as much attention to their driving as they should, resulting in VERY avoidable accidents, because the consequence to themself is minimal at best (at least in their eyes).
  12. Rule of thumb - replace the rear pads when you replace the tire. Buy pads on eBay for 1/2 what the stealer gets. Even if you're throwing away 1/2 the pad life it's a lot cheaper than a chewed up rotor (like I have. Just need to get a few more pennies and I'll have he $150 I need to replace THAT...). If nothing else, keep checking those pads, swap them around (if you're comfortable with that), etc. Be safe!

  14. Sounds like 'boilo'. Friend of mine at work brought me some a few months ago and I think I still have some in the fridge. I'm leaving on a weeklong trip next Saturday, and my throat is getting a little sore (and three people at work (within my department of nine) have bronchitis and strept). VP out since LAST Thursday. If I get sick...
  15. I have mine hanging on the left lower crash bar. Leather strap that came with it has been supplemented by a zip tie for security (it's not supporting it, but should the weather wear through I won't lose the protection of the bell). I drag the bell through tight left hand turns, though I imagine that'd be kind of difficult with the hack hooked up, eh?

After I made sure my friend's brother and father were OK (and their residences), my thought was (again, sorry in advance, same as Randy) - that mayor will do anything to keep the bikers out of town next month. I really do hope they get that under control as soon as possible to prevent any more loss of property (or injuries). I've seen the results of those kinds of fires, jumping across an equivalent of 15 lanes of highway (in Florida/Georgia a number of years ago) - not a nice thought or result.
  17. Here's two: Experience. Confidence. If you're looking for a physical item (I know, you are), I'd have to say rear lighting (LED bar). You still have to be in tune with traffic and your machine in order to ride well and safe. A VERY close second would be heated gear. This SAFELY allows you to ride when it's below 45 as it allows you to stay focused on the road instead of your misery.

  21. You'll love having your own CarbTune, trust me. The ColorTune plug is also very handy; I used mine a lot on th XJ line of bikes that I've worked on over the years. It can be very handy if only to make sure everything's running right at idle. You don't say what bike you have as to what valve tool you need (I don't have one for my second gen yet, though I'm going to get one before too long).   23. Not sure about how accurate/inaccurate it is, but I clipped mine right into the aux power adapter (cigarette lighter) in the fairing. Mounted it right where you're talking, just on the tank side of the center bolt on the top of the triple-tree. Those that have these mounted - how many green bars do you typically see while running down the road?
  24. I have my bell on the left engine guard on my second gen. It has a leather strap holding it on, but I also put a zip tie on it as a backup. I want the leather to be supporting it, but should the leather come untied (hasn't in two years) or wear through (same), I don't want to lose the bell. So the zip tie is there as a backup, not actually supporting it at this time. Something to think about for the next one, maybe.
