I don't know what the manual you get of the web says but I just went and looked at the manual that came with my 2000 RSV and it says at 600 miles and 8,000 miles and at 8,000 mile intervals. I am curious what the newer model RSV manuals that came with the bike say. The web is obviously different from my manual.
-
My manual also states every 8,000 miles. I have a 2000 RSV. Maybe the RSTD is different as someone else said his manual says every 4,000 miles. My manual also states to use Yamalube or any SAE 10w30 or SAE 15W40 motor oil that meet SJ (I think) requirements. It does not differentiate between synthetic or conventional motor oil. So if you follow the instructions in the manual it doesn't matter what kind of motor oil you use you change it every 8,000 miles. But like most of you I don't follow the manuals recommendations, I change my oil filter every time and I chande conventional motor oil every 3 - 4,000 miles and I change synthetic every 6 - 8,000 miles.

I don't know but if it is self powered or can be powered by a 12 volt power supply (don't know if the Australian models have a power outlet) and it has a place for headphones and the headphone plug is the same size as the input beside the tape deck then it should work. Basickly you are just using your Venture's speakers instead of headphones. That is my quess??:puzzled:

I have both and both are very good at what they do. IPOD's are about twice the price of a compilable MP3 player. An example an 8gig IPOD around $130 and an 8gig MP3 player around $60. The IPOD in this example would have a slightly larger screen. I have a IPOD Suffle which is 1 oe 2 gig but has no viewing screen so you cannot select a particular song and no video. You basicely turn it on and listen to it. The larger IPOD's and MP3 players you can select the song you want to listen to via a screen and or programing within the system. IPOD's also require you to use itune to load music and or video onto your IPOD. MP3's are a little easier to use as you don't have to use one specific program to load music and video. Another consideration is the batteries. The IPOD and the 8gig MP3 player have rechargible batteries so when the batteries are gone you may as well through them away. Some IPOD's you can send back to IPOD and they will replace the batteries for a lot of . I also have a MP3 player that takes AAA I use as a spare.

Does anybody here have the Utopia back rest ?
YamaDuck replied to Hummingbird's topic in Watering Hole
Oh it's a great product! We didn't open it up much. Just enough to move the bottom of the pad back a little so that it is over the rear of the seat instead of blocking the rear of the seat being to far forward (if that makes any since). You can still adjust the seat at the pivot point with the screw. Mine was fine but my friend just didn't want it so far forward so we adjusted it a little with a big hammer. Oh and by the way it does wrinkle the forward portion of the rear seat a little. -

There is only so much adjustment built into a Utopia. The one I have was hitting me to high up in the back and I just turned it upside down and mine is just fine. My friend however turned his upside down and adjusted it out and still didn't like it so that is where the hammer came in. -

A friend bought a Venture with a Utopia backrest and it was pushing him forward also. We put a piece od cardboard on the ground, took the Utopia off, took the Utopia apart, put the mounting part on the cardboard so the the bend stuck up in the air, put an old rag on the bend and commenced to hi the top of the bend with a 3 lb hammer. Problem solved. He's happy now and the Utopia is not pushing him forward. -
No you can not load routes and I never tried to play MP3's when I had it on my Road Star. I have BUB pipes so it would have been useless to try and I don't need it in the car. Sorry.
-
I have one of these and although it works great in my auto I had it mounted to my Road Star and it shook it to death. It quit working and I had to replace it. Should work fine on a Venture though.

On option 1. I saw that in the Harbor Freight cat. and called a nearby store. The stores do not even show the part number so it is strictly a catalog item. The item is marker oversized freight and the shipping section says it is an additional $75 shipping. $75 plus what amount I don't know or it may just be $75. Option 2. I like the looks of the aluminum boxes also but are they water tight? If they are not water tight how much extra would it cost to make it water tight? Option 3. The cooler added in front of the box would not necessarily add very much weight to the tongue. It would all depend on the placement of the axle. If you move the axle closer to the front of the load the less tongue weight you would have. You could actually have a negative tongue weight if you move the axle to far forward which would be very very bad. The longer the trailer the easier it is to back up. Unless you have a Goldwing this will not be an issue. Each time you load your trailer it will change the tongue weight depending on what you pack and where you pack it in the trailer but it should not change a lot. There now you have my worth. I'm sure others with more knowledge or differing options will chime in so you will be able to make a more intelligent decision.

I was also told that and I checked and there is a number under the lid. One is stamped and one is ink. I have never tried to have a key made using those numbers though. I keep a spare flat key in my wallet that I had made at Ace hardware.
-
You could have all the RSV owners send you their spare key and you could try them one at a time until you found one that worked with yours. :rotfl:

Rotella makes a conventional and a synthetic motor oil. The conventional is in the white jug and the synthetic is in the blue jug. I would not see why you could not go from Amsoil to synthetic Rotella.

If I understand it right the 10w40 would be good for colder temps like up north assuming you rode in the cold weather. The 5w's and 10's can also be the high efficiency oils that have a lot a additives that can make your clutch slip. You just have to make sure that the oil you use does not have the additives. Anyway that is my understanding.
-
The previous owner never used synthetic and from what I've read and been told by a motorcycle mechanic is if you use synthetic you can't go back to conventional motor oil. I don't know how true this information is or what would happen if you did go back. I know synthetic is superior to conventional motor oil but from my research my understanding is that if you change your oil every 3000 to 4000 miles that you waist your money by buying a synthetic motor oil. From what I've read that if you wait until 8000 miles between oil changes then you need synthetic because conventional motor oil would break down. As long as conventional motor oil does not have additives and meets the motor oil standards of SG (which both of these motor oils do) then it is safe. Both these motor oils are diesel oils which withstand higher temps and have a higher (zinc or something like that) .16 verses regular motor oil of .05 which motorcycle oils have .015. Conventional motor oils do not break down in 3000 to 4000 miles so they are safe to use in motorcycles as long as they meet the motorcycle motor oil requirements. If I did go to a synthetic motor oil I would probably go to the Rotella or another synthetic diesel motor oil. I was just courious if anyone has used the Motorcraft Heavy Duty Diesel conventional motor oil.
-
Ok it is time for an oil change. This will be the first one since I bought my 2000MM RSV. I went to wally world and picked up some Rotella 15w40 which is an oil many members use on the RSV's. I also picked up a couple of Super Teck 7317 filters. The oil cost $11 for 1 gal. While I was looking at the different motor oils I noticed a Motorcraft 15w40 Heavey Weight Diesel Motor Oil. The Motorcraft wa $11.50 for 5 quarts which is a little cheaper. Has anyone used the Motorcrft Diesel Motor Oil and if you did how did you like it?

I'm sure you know what you want because that all sounds Greek to me. I just know the Polk sound better to me than my original speakers. I can't tell if they are any louder or as loud as they are so close to the originals in volume they are just clearer especially at the higher volumes above 24 on the radio dial. It may have something to do with the Polk having two cones instead of one like the Clarion. I do know I have no problem hearing the radio but when play the MP3 or IPOD players the recorded volume is lower than the radio volume so I just put a Radio Shack battery powered amp in my MP3/IPOD circut and it is pleanty load. -

I replaced mine with Polk db401's. I got one pair off ebay for $56.95 with free shipping and I got the other pair off ebay for $41.95 with free shipping. You just have to keep checking ebay until you find a deal. My 401's sound a lot better than my stock speakers of course my bike is a 2000 model so the speakers were getting old. The Clarion's are 12 watt speakers but I don't know if that is RMS. the speakers just have that stamped on the back. The Polk's are 45 watt RMS and my radio does not have any problem powering the speakers. A friend has Polk db401's on his and he has no problem powering his. There is a member on one of the forums that said his Polk db401's were chirping and he put a small amp in his and it got rid of the chirp. Mine or my friends are not chirping so maybe he had a bad connection or something. Wal-Mart has a pair of 4" speakers for $30. I think it may be a store brand and I am not sure if they are marine speakers but it may be worth a try to you. -
Here in Ga. blue lights are illegal. I read the state code. It did not say anything about red but I would stay away from red around anything but the rear of the bike. The state code did not mention red but I did not read each city code that is in the state. The county I live in the police use blue and red on there patrol cars so I would not be surprised in my county that there would be a code against red. Of course as long as you don't ride with them on you can have any color you want.

Yes I'm sure it does because either way it has support for the motorcycle via the truck bed or the truck bed and the tailgate. I'm not saying don't use it without the tailgate I would just make sure it is strong enough to support a motorcycle if your not going to be using your tailgate. Remember safety first. If you do use it without a tailgate let us know how it goes.

tank bag for RSTD
YamaDuck replied to RandyR's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I got the magnet type at Wal-Mart. It does have a strap to go around the neck of the front forks but are a little short. It is also collapsible. It has a hard plastic flexible piece that folds up out of the way when the bag is collapsed. It also has a clear map pocket and an outside pocket to put smaller items in. It is made by Bell and I paid $30.
