Lets talk a little about viscosity. As everyone can agree that we as a group cannot agree on which motor oil to use. As ststed in my owners manual if I don't use Yamalube I can use any SAE 10W30 motor oil without friction additives. So I take that to mean Yamaha does recommend car or automotive motor oil. So now that brings me to this question. If Yamaha recommends SAE 10W30 what happens if I put 5W40 or 15W40 or even 20W50 in it? Yamaha doesn't recommend 5W40 but 10W30 is within the range of 5W40 so is it alright? Isn't 5W40 a little to then on hot days and a little to thick on cold days? I don't remember reading anything about what climate you live in so I assume Yamaha took that into consideration when they recommend any SAE 10W30 oil? Let the fun begin and hopefully we will all learn something from this. Harry:puzzled:

Just got back Aug 14 from putting over 11,000 miles on her in 31 days. She deserves a rest, another bath and an oil change so she's resting until I take my time and get her nice and clean and some fresh oil. Besides I rode my Roadie today:rotf: -
Beautiful pic's. I just got back from Co. also. Didn't do that pass but did do Mt. Evens which when we got to the top my GPS read 14,171 feet. The first thing everyone ask is how did the Venture do? The Venture did not miss a lick! It did great all the way up. A BMW rider at the top said his BMW was missing a little, he guessed the computer was having trouble with the thin air. I did have trouble with my cruise control at high altitudes though. It would not hold. When I got down below 7,000 feet it did fine though. My Venture is 9 years old and that may have something to do with it. Glad you had a great trip. Western CO is one of the most beautiful places in the US but eastern CO you can have.

I have never run the Avon's but I did a lot of reading on both tires before I went with the E3's. I have read where people were having trouble with the Avon's (not many) but more than with the E3's. I was at a meet and eat and met a couple of people who were running E3's and both had over 18,000 miles on their rear tire. So the high mileage and trouble reports on the Avon's convinced me to go with the E3's even though they were about the same handling tire.

I put E3's on and have about 12,000miles on them in the last couple of months and they still have a long way to go. Great riding and handling tires however I hit some tire snakes out west and I thought I was going down. My buddy had E3's on his and when I looked up he was all over the place. He told me he though he was going down. I don't know how much it had to do with the tire snakes and how much it had to do with the E3's. I've hit tire snakes before with other tires and did not have any trouble. I do love the E3's though just hate the tire snakes.

Let's me see if I have this right. 1) You got a good deal. 2) You're thinking about throwing the savings away by painting it. 3) When you do decide to sell it you are going to take another hit on the resell and get less money for it. 4) Only 1000 were sent to the U.S. and some have been totaled and you are thinking of destroying another one. 5) As time passes and there are less MM out there the value between the regular Venture and the MM will continue to rise. Not only would I not paint it I would not even put an accessory on it unless it was a Yamaha accessory unless it is a bolt on accessory that can be easily taken off.

I would definitely NOT paint it. I feel that if you don't like the color you sell it and but one you like. The MM is that color. That is one of the things that make it a MM. I have a MM and everywhere I go I have people coming up to me and love the color. I understand that color is a personal preference but I would not ruin a MM that someone else might like to have.

Thanks, it is nice to be back.

Thanks Squidley, it's nice to be home. Only had one near miss. Sun was setting behind me and a car pulled out in front of me at the entrance to Bryce Canyon. Didn't think I could stop it but I did. I guess he couldn't see me because of the sun. Oh and the tar snakes are very slippery out west also.

Yep just done it about a week ago. The speed limit is 5 mph and it is gravel except at the switchbacks which are paved. It was a blast. We took the dirt road at Mexican hat to get better pictures and that rode is a trip also when you get back behind Mexican Hat.

Well we're back. I'm sorry if I didn't contact anybody as we went through your state. I had copied everyone's phone number down along with the VRassistance info and I l forgot to take it. A few of you called and it was great talking to you. It was a great trip but very exhausting. Our shortest days were 11 hours and our longest days were 15 hours. There were many more 15 hour days then there were 11 hour days. We hit 20 states 8 of which we hit twice. Two states we hit 3 times. We were sleeted on once at over 9,500 feet and were in Washington state during their record breaking high temperatures. I don't care if it is a dry heat 106 is still hot. I had to close the vent on my windshield as it felt like a blow dryer blowing in your face. You don't sweat much though. Our highest elevation (and I have a GPS picture to prove it) was 14,171 feet. Boy is the are thin up there. I believe we were above 7,500 feet more than we were below it. We saw many wonderful animals ( I even had a squirrel in the bed, when I turn down the cover out popped a squirrel) many beautiful flowers, and many many beautiful mountains and streams. We traveled 11,155 miles in 31 days and we could have traveled the same distance in 310 days and still not seen everything. The drivers were so curtius except in the southeast (mostly GA and TN). Drivers only drove in the left lanes when they passed people unlike it is around here where people come straight off the entrance ramp and go straight to the left lane and campout. Our Ventures were the hit of the trip though. Not but one problem between two bike the whole trip. My shift lever bolt came out somewhere and I had to get a metic bolt from NAPA. People acted like they had never seen a Venture before. We would walk up from sight seeing and there would be people taking pictures in front of our bikes. We offered to let people sit on the bikes and take pictures. People would take pictures of us on the Ventures. Peoples just loved the big Ventures. The biggest negative was the gas mileage. When you got the Ventures up to 75 mph the gas mileage dropped to about 35 to 37 mpg and when you got it close to 80 or a gusty head wind it dropped to around 30 mpg. All in all after 31 days I was glad to get back to my wife and kids. Harry

Thanks to all. We are taking a laptop so I may be able to keep you updated. It all depends on whether or not the places we stay has a wireless signal.

Hi Daryl, Yea we are coming up I29 to I90 on 7/17. I'll try and give you a call tomorrow night.

Thanks utadventure for your very gracious offer. Our route does take us through UT but not near SLC unfortunately. Thanks again for your very kind offer. Cinderella thank you for your well wishes and your great advice about the help network, I totally did not think of it but a great idea. Squidley thanks for the link that will make getting the info a lot easier.

Is there such a list or is it something you have to go through and build from the membership list?

The Big Day has finally arrived. James (Highlander) Tut (a Harley Davidson owner friend) and I are leaving Wednesday morning from Fayetteville, Ga. at 6am on our trip. Now this may be a little long so bare with me as we are going to put about 11,500 miles on our Ventures (and HD) in about 28 days. (I sure hope the HD holds up:fingers-crossed-emo). I'm not going to mention the cities as it will take to long for my two little fingers to type. But the states are, GA, Tn, Ky, Il, Mo, Nb, Ia, SD, Wy, Mt, Wy, Id, Mt, Id, Wa, Or, Ca, Na, Az, Ut, Co, Ks, Mo, Il, Ky, Tn and finally back in Ga. My hurts just thinking about it. Now is the part where you come in. I would like all of you to keep us in your thoughts and prayers that everything goes alright and we all arrive at our homes safe and sound. Oh and a little prayer wouldn't hurt to keep us on our time table. See ya'll in about a month, Yamaduck
