  1. Been considering a different bike myself, found a Valkyrie Interstate at the local dealer for 7K but am still holding out for a bimmer. Congrats on the new ride!
  2. better window putty then super glue ........
  3. Uuhhhhhhh, Are we talking about the same day? You sure you're not talking about Memorial Day or Veterans Day, because the way I understand it, Thanksgiving Day was celebrated by the first settlers to thank the Indians for helping them survive their near catastrophic first year (of socialism - a dismal failure) and showing them what crops would grow here. 'Course, ... I'm just a foreigner, what do I know:confused24::confused24: Anyway, Happy thanksgiving every one! Oh and lest anyone think I would disagree with Boomers text, you'd be wrong
  4. So my new cable came in, I at least had the foresight to try it before re-assembling the whole thing. Turns out I still had the whine. I did find out that by pressing the speedo cable hard into the back of the gage i could stop the noise, but that would bve hard to re-create on the bike. So, back to Randy's suggestion to grease the inside of the bearing. I used a plastic fork with all but one of the teeth broken of along with some bearing grease. The fork gave me some offset to make it easier to reach the bearing point, the slightly flat tine allowed me some measure of "packing" the grease in the edge of the bearing. The result is deafening - quiet that is! I put everything but the windshield back together and took her for a test spin and I am happy to say that my speedo whine is gone while still using the "old" (2 years tops) cable. Hate to admit it but, sometimes it really pays to listen to the folks who've "been there, done that". Thanks Randy!! If anyone needs a new throttle cable, give me a shout, $30 plus shipping
  5. had to cross a patch of frozen snow (more like ice) with tire tracks all down the length. NO FUN AT ALL!! I'll ride the in the cold or rain, but I'll take the truck if they're calling for snow.
  6. Did not grease from the inside but as stated, I ran a drill on the back of the head speedo head with no noise and did the same thing with the drill on the wheel side of the cable and she wailed as soon as she started turning. I understand what (and why) you are asking, but if the bearing is dry she should be whining either way. I ordered a new cable, so I should know by wednesday if it was indeed the cable.
  7. Well, this is annoying! Everything pulled and greased and my first 1/10th of a mile up to 30mph was good and then the squeal started back up. Pulled everything again and tried the drill bit again, no sound from the speedo itself but when I hooked the drill up to the bottom of the cable and spun it there was my squeal. So the problem is in the cable, yet there are no burrs on the inside cable and I greased the entire length with white lithium. The dealer suggested that wheel bearing grease would be better or what they use, graphite. Can't see that a different lubricant would make a difference, but I may try it, otherwise it'll have to be a new cable. At least they are only about $25 and I wouldn't have a speedo till Tuesday/Wednesday.
  8. I stopped and pulled the speedo cable on the way home Wednesday night, it was getting a bit ridculous; and found your comment after I got home; thanks for the idea Randy! I pulled the dash, installed spare Tach I had floating around and modified your idea by simply using the tube of white lithium and sticking it inside the speedo cable housing and squeezing hard. Then used the electric drill in reverse with a small square drive to check for result. You know that thing will run 25mph??!! Didn't hear any squealing though, still have to road test it, but I prefer to have the windshield on for that.
  9. someone should call the garage guy..:stickpoke:
  10. thanks for the info, I'll see about tracking that down next coolant change. Need to worry about front fork seals first :-(
  11. Pulled the cable and no noise, so I cleaned the cable and re-lubed again and squirted grease in the wheel connection, hopefully that'll take care of it, otherwise I'll have to pull the windscreen and dash. Annoying as I replaced the cable but a couple of years ago. Thanks for the heads up.
  12. Now that I work nights and have to leave the bike out in the cold I've found a small puddle under the bike in the a.m. (I suppose it could be from sitting next to a HD) . Anyway, Idon' think it is condensation running down, it is definitely not oil, so I think it is coolant. It does not leak out while in the garage at home. Could the temp cause some kind of purging of the coolant system? And could this be related to the whine I'm hearing? Thanks
  13. OK, so my '83 has a new noise, I thought maybe the speedo but I pulled the cable and lubed it and it still does it. The "whine" starts pretty much when I start rolling, builds up to a constant level and stays there. It is louder when the bike is cold but still somewhat noticeable when I've ridden 30 miles. Any ideas? I do have an issue with the tach not winding up as it should. It does go up or down but takes about 5 miles to show cruising RPM and will not respond rapidly, even going down, but the thing is electric, so I don't know that would be it??
  14. I found the hippo hands site (http://www.hippohands.com) Also found Bikerpaws, but it is apparently no longer available. And lastly I found "winterhands" (http://www.outsideconnection.com/gallant/VX/winterhands.htm). Unfortunately only a mailing address, no phone or e-mail winterhands is lined and more expensive, while hippohands looks more like a rigid "fairing" which would keep the wind of but not provide any insulation. There are probably other similar things but I haven't found them (yet). Who has experience with what? Thanks

  16. Including the insides of the overhead fluorescent lights .... My son did the Naval Academy:confused24:
  17. I shift down by picking my foot up and pressing down on the front part of the HT then setting the foot down on the FB untill the next downshift; and I shift up by resting my foot on the ball and shifting with the heel. Depending where I'm going I leave my foot on the ball until I am close to my desired cruising RPM. At no time do I rest my entire foot on the shifter (which would be uncomfortable anyway). My foot rest on the floorboard when not actively shifting. I've found that by preloading the shifter prior to pulling the clutch (upshifting) I experience very little noise.
  18. your most economical (cheapest) option will probably an asymmetrical trike, aka sidecar, you can probably get a used chair for around $1500 but will need to add the mounting from a reputable shop. Still beats 6 grand plus for a trike kit plus conversion costs.
  19. fall color depends on the weather, usually more moisture will result in brighter colors whereas dry conditions will result in more faded colors.
  20. Used to do that on my Virago.
  21. I will give Brenda one thing, it is inconvenient to have to "back" through a number of screens to get back to listing of recent posts. Yes, you can simply go hit "new posts" again but if you have 3 or four pages you wind up back at the beginning instead of page three where you left off, still, if that's all you have to b*tch about, you got too much time on your hand. No offense. Was the amount of time spend to duplicate a feature which already existed (rate thread) really worth it so you don't have to back space two pages, not to mention was it worth Don's time? After all, this is not his job, it's his hobby, he's got a family too. As an imported resident I have to take the view that Americans are just getting ridiculous, everything has to be sooo easy, it's not like an extra keystroke is going to kill anybody
  22. Seems that's what the "thanks" button is for.......
  23. I'm trying to figure out why some LED walk path lights a have quit working. these things have a "ballast" (?) build into the wiring and the LED sits on a small disk with the connectors attached to it. As to what kind of LED, not sure what you mean and I don't want to be a smartass and say that it's a square one You simply slip the solid core wiring into them to hook them up. No way you can swap wires . the owner can't find the information on where he bought them so i can't call those guys. So I am kind of lost on this one and figured to tap into the wealth of knowledge on here.
