  1. Mike, Most of the time we do ride the parkway! We Love it also. When we get an early start from Ellijay and not worried about the storms catching up with us. Thur. we ran from the storms and just made it to Boone,NC before they hit. While we decided the next day to take some roads that we had not ridden in a long time and just remind us at how great the area is. Fridays ride around the area of Boone, we saw over thirty waterfalls due to the high water table and the rainfall on Thur. night. Do you know which GPS model will allow a route programmed? How hard is it to program? Thanks
  2. I also had a question. Can you input this info in a GPS and let it lead you on all the roads without having to try and follow the map or directions. I would like to be able to relax and let the GPS tell me when the next turn is coming up. I want to be able to tell the GPS the roads I want not it trying to tell me how it wants me to get to point A to B. Does this make sense? Thanks again for any responses!
  3. Thought I might let a few people get some great ideas for a long weekend ride. The wife and I along with our other riding partners Rick & Jackie left Ellijay, GA. Thursday morning around 10:00 a.m. Headed to Boone, NC. Spent the two nights in Boone, NC then over to Gatlinburg, TN. and just got back Sun. Late afternoon. If you have time take a look at the following links for roads traveled. I think the only bad road we spent any time on was I-40 from Canton, NC to Marion, NC which really is not that bad other than it is an Interstate. Want to hear what people think! So many guys come down to ride this area but do not know the roads they should take. Thought we could put a few ride links like this on the destination forum for people to have a better idea of what they would see. Since everyone has diffrent taste in lodging, dinning, I leave all my info as great rides with plenty of water falls, rivers, Mountain tops, & Valley Views. Along with the great curves that this region gives us! See attached links http://binged.it/134GC5d Ellijay, Ga. to Boone, NC http://binged.it/134MJq6 Boone, NC scenic day rides and lunch at The Canyon in Blowing Rock,NC http://binged.it/132yG8b Boone, NC over to Gatlinburg, TN taking all back roads and Lunch at Shady Valley, TN and Steak Dinner at the Alamo Steak House and Bar in Gatlinburg. http://binged.it/134RC2o Gatlinburg, TN over to Cades Cove Loop to view the Wildlife, Black Bears, Turkey, Deer, Fox // Wondering where to see the Elk?? Over the Foothills parkway and on to slay the Dragon as I do so well!! The wife says that it just gets the adrenline running thru you as we just have safe throttle reving fun. All roads have their own beauty and one can enjoy all. Have a great review!
  4. Don, You can count on me being at Vogel! You know I just stay in the background until I need the great knowledge from all of our members. Not sure we will be paying extra for WWW just was wondering if someone had a solution that I had not seen. Thanks to all!
  5. OK GLAD YOU ALL HAVE AN OPINION ON WASHING OR NOT WASHING! START ANOTHER THREAD AND LEAVE THIS UP FOR THE ORIGINAL QUESTION! My bike is 2004 with 91,068 and the wife and I ride between 8,000 & 14,000 miles a year depending on what side of the country we decide to ride in. The bike still looks like it did when I bought it. We have run mostly the D404 WWW however seems that Dunlop decided to change the compound and tire wear was not good. E3 was to noise in the mountains. Avon Venom are the tire of choice due to the way it handles the curves and still gets decent mileage for someone who rides like I do. Ask around the few here on the site all will agree that Cowboy rides like he stole the bike. Riding the mountains 90% of the time with not much Slab riding. We pull a trailer a few times a year. I was hoping that someone might have a solution of another option for Wide White Walls! Seems that the rear tire is the problem. I have the leveling links on, easy to remove and go back to original for the smaller front tire. Come to Georgia/ NC / Tenn. and we can ride the back country with all the best things in life. Our favorite bike, Our favorite woman, and Our favorite beer, wine, or mixed drink. Life is too short to read or think about the rants!
  6. Just makes me mad we can't get a good Wide White Wall Rear Tire. Bike looks so much better with the White Walls, but I just did not want to run the Dulop 404 anymore. Guess I will jus drop back and punt. Thanks for the responses! AKA Cowboy Brian Shoemaker
  7. Wondering if anyone has tried a 170/80-15 rear tire. Another question. Wide White Wall Options ? Who makes a match set other than the Dunlop 404 WWW? Thanks for any response!
  8. Buddy has a 2006 RSV with a 4 pin wiring harness, He is wanting to pull my Bushtec trailer that has a 6 pin. Does anyone no of a converter or should I just tell him to order the harness from Bushtec? Anyone with a sugguestion? Thanks
  9. Goose, Which road did you take north of Escalanta? NF153 Pine Creek Road or Main Canyon Sweetwater Road? Might make a pointe to make the side trip next time.
  10. Great Ride would love to live closer. Recommended ride! 11. NC16 from the blue ridge parkway VA16 WV16 to Beckley, WV This road is not for the faint of heart. It is one wild ride from the time you leave the parkway until you make it up to Beckley, WV. Great ride never heard anyone mention it so I thought I would ask. Have you or will you!!?? Cowboy
  12. Steve, Just finished a 9 nine day trip with 3100 miles two-up pulling a Bushtec trailer loaded. The shock performed great on the WV roads that have a few bumps on in them to say the least. We have just over 4,100 miles on the new shock and the new Avon Venoms. If you have followed my post you will see that over the last two years tire wear was a big problem. Last tires Dunlop 404 only made it for 3,000 miles Before that Avon Venom made it for 4,896 miles Before that Avon Venom made it for 7,638 miles Before that Dunlop Elite3 made it for 8,863 miles Before that Dunlop WWW404 made it for 7,209 miles Before that Dunlop WWW404 made it for 8,127 miles Before that Dunlop WWW404 made it for 10,084 miles Before that Dunlop WWW404 made it for 10,955 miles Before that Dunlop WWW404 made it for 10,920 miles Before that Dunlop 404 made it for 11,655 miles. So as you can see I had a problem and no one new why. I had two Yamaha Dealerships look at it and a Suspension shop. The suspension shop just said that it was the rear shock and he could not find a shock to replace it, without putting a worthless stock shock back on it. Under rated for the size bike and loads that I carry. He could have sold me a Hagon or a Works but choose not too and let me do it myself. Glad he did it was an easy change just a hard decision to make on which shock I needed or should buy. Finally choose the Hagon with the heavy duty spring. I feel that it was the correct choice, I have 4,100 miles and the tires have more than half the tread life left. I ride hard and never expect to get more than 12,000 miles on a set of tires unlike some who get alot more. JUST MY TWO CENTS AND OBSERVATION COWBOY
  13. I was getting a backfire under decel while I was in the mountains. I tried replacing the exhaust donuts and made sure no leaks. Carb Tune. Spark Plug replaced. Coil Packs checked. Still got the backfire, so I first plugged the AIS four years ago. This winter I just removed the whole system. Needed to remove. 1. Four brass plugs to cap the ends at the hard pipes. Two in the rear of engine and two in the front of engine. I used a 3/4" brass pipe cap with four new clamps. I used the gaskets that came off the original system. 2. Two new rubber plugs that go on the vacumn lines next to the area that the two plugs are already. You will have four in lieu of two. 3. I found that the rear pipes had a cross bar that must be sawed in half to allow you to remove. 4. I also found that the radiator had to be removed to access the front system. That should about do it. If you need anything feel free to send me a P.M.
  14. Robert, I just got my shock from USA Hagon. It took longer for christina to verify if the remote adjuster was availble for our shock, as you have found out it is not due to short length of our shock. She told me two weeks once the order was placed and she made it happen. I got the Hagon Shock with the heavy duty spring. Wife says she notices the difference more than I really did. I don't know how yours rode but with the air holding the shock never bottomed out it just was not doing it proper cycle. I had the bike at Traxion Suspension shop for two weeks trying to get them to make a shock and check the bike out. All they did for me was tell me the shock was diffently shot, so I brought it home and ordered the Hagon Shock. We have put 580 miles on it now and I am very happy with the performance and the amount of stability it has when you hit a bump in the curves, or the bridge joints, bike adsorbs the bump and keeps the tire planted. Others say that when the shock goes bad that it felt like a pogo stick, or bottomed out. Never had any of this. Just extreme tire wear and not that stable in a bumpy curve. Call me if you have any questions I will try and help. Later
  15. Kenny, Another day another year life is grand! Have a great day. Hope to see you sooner or later. Brian & Sherrie Lee
  16. Just Ordered mine tonite. www.denniskirk.com Dennis Kirk has a great price on the Avon Venom AM41 Front 150/80H-16 $127.99 Avon Venom AM42 Rear 150/90HB-15 $110.95 Shipping is $5.00 a tire Total $248.94 Hopefully this might be a sign that spring sales are coming on tires. Everyone else was still at the $159.99 - $162.99 FRONT & $151.99 - $160.99 http://www.jakewilson.com/ http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ http://www.compacc.com/
  17. Since your bike is a 2008 it is possible. Mine cracked last year and it is an 2004 and it was due to flexing the crash bar. Need pictures to see how bad it is cracked and where it is cracked. Mine was 3" long and I just reinforced it with fiberglass on the inside. I put several layers and it has held just fine and only I would know it is there. Let us know what happens and post a picture.
  18. Bike runs fine but last valve check was at 34,000. I've been told that these bikes normally do not get loose but rather get too tight. It is a good excuse to change the leaking rear kickstand side valve cover gasket. I will keep you updated.
  19. Looks like the day and time will be determined by the availability of the Valve Shim Kit. Randy has one but he just sent it out on loan, should have back in a couple of weeks. Skydoc has one but he just sent it out also. I will be in touch with both and see what we can do. Now let me know schedules for I work out of the house and can do this any day as long as we have the valve shim kit. For anyone who wants to join us in the valve adjustment for the 2nd Gen. make sure to get a valve cover gasket set. Note also we can do oil changes / fuel filter / plugs / rear end fluid. What ever time lets make it soon! Spring is almost here since we have not really had a winter here in GA.
  20. Wondering if I might have a couple of guys that might want to tackle a valve adjustment on the iron horse before we get into spring? I do not have any experence at it but with the write up from VGoose it looks to be fairly easy just time consuming. We could do it in my garage or at someone else's. I do not have a carbon one lift adapter but I do have a craftsman jack. Should have all the tools needed accept for the shim kit and special tool. Also would need a carbtune for after we adjust the valves. If we get some intrest maybe we could round one up from another member or I could just buy one. Let me know what you think out there. I know I have a grill that cooks some mean steaks, and the garage refrig has cold beer. Brian Shoemaker 706-635-1580
  21. 1. Is fuel getting to the spark plug? Plug should get wet if you are not firing. 2. Timing is key to make sure that at top dead center the flywheel is on the coil. Take the flywheel off and make sure that the keyway is not sheared. 3. Take the exhaust off and make sure it is not stopped up with carbon build up. Clogged exhaust will cause problems. 4. With the exhaust off you should be able to see if you are getting fuel! 5. Make sure not to put any kind of compressed air on the carb. the internal parts that cannot be replaced will be ruined. In this case you will need a new carb. Just soak the carb in carb cleaner or just a bowl of gas. Tooth brush on all parts and make sure to take all neddles out and soak. 6. If you do not get a burp with ether then I have to think that it is timing! 7. Last resort pull the top end off and check the piston rings. Usally can do this without any special tools just patience and maybe four hands to get set back in place. Be sure the piston rings are staggered most pistons have a notch for each ring that offsets each ring. Best of luck! Let us know how it comes out. Brian Shoemaker
  22. Rick, Glad to hear you made that rough ride in the first seasons cold spell. Found the great riding weather of Fla. this time of year. Enjoy you visit with family and the scenic area of the Keys. Wish I could make it. Wife was wondering what heated vest did you end up getting, Good time to try with cold temps and rain. Thats the type test she wanted. Later Be safe! Brian & Sherrie
  23. I got tired of trying the E3 and Avon Venom for long tread wear as all on this site swear by. Everyone says its the bike! Seems that is not the case! It is the rider and the roads he rides. I had two local shop check the bike out for worn out bearings sticking rotors misalignment from front to rear, balance, swing arm bearings & torque. Both shops found nothing along with my own inspection. I have been at wits end can't get more than 7,000 as of late. Last set lasted only 4800 miles. Now for what both shops told me: STOP RIDING LIKE THE BIKE IS A CROTCH ROCKET! Living in the mountains I drag the pegs in most curves and I constantly have the throttle rev. I use the bikes motor slow me down and use a lot of brake. Seems this combination is not good for tires. Seems the longer I ride the more aggressive I am. Hope you the best on finding a tire that works for you. I have decided to be happy with 7,000 miles out of a tire. Just my two cents! It is the rider not the bike.
  24. Does anyone have a part number for Fuel Filter Options at local auto parts stores? Thanks for any replies.
  25. Walter, How long are you trying to stay? If longer than a two or three nights I think I would try in Bryson City, NC / Hotels / or even getting a House. When you end up spliting the cost of a house I usually come out better and cook a steak at the end of a great days ride. Send me a P.M. and I will see if I can find the contacts for the house rental. Have a great trip! If you need some pointers on great day rides from the area let me know I am sure I can come up with some. Brian Shoemaker
