Thanks for the info Goose, I often wondered because the pump clicked this morning when I turned it on after 12 hours sit down.. but didn't after 3 days sit down.. Interesting. Good point.. Cheers M8

Funny how Beerman mentions the clicking sound on the pump.. My bike was sitting at my friends house for a few days indoors and he had asked me about that sound so I turned my ignition on to let him here it.. but no sound.. but the bike runs fine with great fuel mileage and so on.. no probs.. But I do get the click sound once in a while, not all the time.. I wonder if how you shut the bike down makes any amount of difference.. I'm one of those people who will shut it down via Kill switch, ignition, kick stand.. cycling them all through during the course of the week when I shut the bike down.. force of habit I guess. No harm in it.. but I should remember which way was done next time to see if the fuel pump priming has any correlation to it.. HMMMMM Regardless, change that fuel filter each year!!! (or more often if you ride a lot)

Did the audio plug clean thing...question?
Seaking replied to slickster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I got a couple of emails from folks asking HOW to tighten the connection with 4 zip ties.. so I'll post it here also to help others who might be in need.. It works for me, but i didn't do it on the new warranty replacement radio yet.. erk! You zip tie around each cable of the connector, a little loose so you can slip another zip tie between it and the cable. Do up the cable connector.. Now, simply zip tie the previous two zip ties together which pulls the connectors tight together. To remove, simply snip off the last two you put on.. Does that make sense without a drawing? -
SUPERB!! always great to get the babe up and running again!! Good on ya M8

Did the audio plug clean thing...question?
Seaking replied to slickster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well the obvious problem would be how permanent it is.. I know it's not very often you have to unplug everything but when it comes time to do the neck bearings for example, what then? I had loose plugs before but with 4 pieces of zip ties was able to make a tightening harness for one of the plugs that cinched it up tight and resolved an issue or two.. -
Please don't do anything like that.. then whom else can I pick on later this winter when cabin fever hits? You're lucky to have worked on new modern aircraft.. I retired from the CAF working on an aircraft older than myself!! egads!

That's something I haven't tested.. but possible.. I know I had pinched wires on my VStar in this manner before so this is possible.. Thanks again, I'll let you know if it comes up with anything.. (time to go on a diet!!)

my new warranty replacement radio has started to cut out and come back on when I hit sharp bump (bridge expansion joints, pot holes, fallen over HDs) The audio will cut out and come back right away, and I noticed that the LCD display on the controller will also blip off and back on. I've checked all my harnesses again but the problem still seems to come and go depending on the bump I hit.. Is this common enough so to not worry about or might there be something 'jiggly' inside the radio itself that might be doing this?

Awesome, what an educational thread! And here I was all these years believing that electricity worked under the principle of "smoke" ... the more smoke you allow to escape from a circuit the more expensive it is to put back into that system.. Hmm might not be the same on a bike I guess.. but this does apply to electronics.. really, it does..

Question about replacement fuel pump
Seaking replied to LilBeaver's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Point taken, thanks for clarification.. I just realized I misspoke as well (was up too late writing the previous barble) The front cylinders were not getting fuel from the pump and the bike was simply not firing up at all.. the rear plugs were wet and the front ones dry. The second shop who fixed the bike in short time sorted it out quickly while the first shop looked at it for 4 days and couldn't find it was a bad pump. It wasn't bad tech info, it was my bad info remembrance.. (old age Cheers M8 -
Question about replacement fuel pump
Seaking replied to LilBeaver's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
What I can say about my situation last summer when my fuel pump finally died is that with a dead pump, the bike would not run. The engine literally died on the highway. Once everything cooled off, the pump worked just long enough to get it to the nearby Yamaha shop. But that was the end of the pump. Long version short, when I took the bike to the second shop, the tech who was able to diagnose the problem properly, told me that the pump is required to push fuel to the front jugs. Gravity will feed the rear jugs but you need the pump to feed the front ones. The first shop didn't spot the dead pump as it worked when they did the test but the pump died soon after but they didn't re-test the pump and that led to a lot of warranty parts being installed on the bike.. good for me If I recall properly, you pull the front plugs out and if they are dry, and the rear ones are wet, this is an indication of a dead pump (or fuel not making it to the front jugs).. I wonder if you can simply just pull the hose off the downstream side of the pump as you do the test, at least you could tell without having to pull the dog bones from the engine? -
Question about replacement fuel pump
Seaking replied to LilBeaver's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
When my fuel pump died the other summer while visiting Pennsylvania, the points were burnt out.. prematurely due to a previously clogged fuel filter.. I gather that the previous owners never changed the fuel filter and it caused the pump to work harder causing it's premature death.. Simple enough to replace but expensive.. Luckily for me it was under warranty and the kind shop was able to take one off the show floor bike to get me on my way sooner than having to wait days for one to be shipped out. This winter I'm relocating my fuel filter to the left side for easier access.. the filters themselves are cheap enough, considering.. but its the pain in the assets access that keeps a lot of people from changing their filters on a regular basis. As far as the 'clicking' fuel pump goes, I seldom hear mine click in the morning.. hard of hearing I guess? -

And this is why people need to pay attention when 'washing' their bikes (if they don't wash their bikes then they really should).. As your hands glide across your bike, you get to find loose items, missing items and NEW items as well My RSV is my first 'large' bike, touring etc and man o man, I feel I was fortunate that several members in my bike club also have RSV and were helpful in sorting me out on the bike.. Did you find the second power outlet on the bike yet? hehe- 32 replies

FUEL MILEAGE on recent trip!
Seaking replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks Earl.. My VStar has K&N air filters and I used to wash those every so many months but I don't know why I neglected them on the RSV, perhaps because they are inside the pods and not exposed like the ones on my VStar (two filters sitting on top of the carbs) But it's smacked me upside the back of the head so now I won't forget.. Fuel Filter and Air Filters.. yep.. Hopes ya feeling better M8 -
Dunlop E3 tire fitment on second gen

We RSV types are nice people =) We don't flame.. we make fun of HD people but that's as rowdy as we get really.. Cheers M8 -
yep another fuel mileage thread but with a twist.. We always hear of people grumpling about getting bad mileage while others boast how fuel efficient their bikes are compared to others.. I constantly ride with the same buddy on long road trips so it gives a good comparison to riding styles, mods and so on as to what works best for fuel mileage.. In the past two years, he's always gotten better mileage than I have, consistently every time until this last trip.. Even after visiting Goose in Texas and getting his expertise at hand to tweak the valves, carbs and so on, my mileage never got any better than my buddy.. In the USA, I would always pump in about .2 to .5 of a gallon more per tank full runs.. In Canada, it would equate to about 1.5 litres or so per tank load.. Except for this last trip!! FINALLY.. the whole trip I finally managed to get consistently every time better mileage than he did.. sometimes by a large margin! yes! lol And I think it's ONLY because I finally remembers to clean out my K&N air filters! When I was down in TX, we pulled the air filters out and just gave them a shake to knock off anything loose but didn't wash and re-load them as they were still very nice and red.. The other week I pulled them off the bike and gave them a proper wash.. and oh my gosh.. filthy doesn't even come close to describing these filters! Even though they looked red and fresh, they were filthy! And right away, after re-loading them, I started to notice much better mileage across the board and under all conditions.. wow.. yeah I think I'm going to be keeping a better schedule on these puppies from now on.. As for mileage? Yeah.. it got me thinking why so many can boast 45-48 mpg while others can get better than 35 or 38 mpg.. I think a lot of it is on how you ride and at what speeds.. Running the bikes anywhere around 50 to 60 on the speedo will get me anywhere from 44 to 48 mpg on this last trip through the White Mountains, while doing 70 - 85 mph on the I90 series will get me 35 to 38 mpg.. (even at 85 we were the SLOW vehicles, wow) So yeah.. basically, clean your air filters.. just cuz they look clean, doesn't mean they are clean.. Its basic common sense maintenance but I totally let it slip past me.. sigh.

Dunlop E3 tire fitment on second gen
Seaking replied to BlueVenture87's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
LOL that's a fine looking FIRST Generation 1987 model you have there.. SECOND generation models start in 1999 and carry on.. so you're in the wrong forum.. (bikes are very different though similar to some) Some will argue the first gens were better than the second gens.. I wouldn't know, I only have a second gen.. and I ride it a lot.. though I got my floorboard blown away by some crazy first gener in Pennsylvania the other year (grumble grumble) Cheers M8! -

Don't feel bad.. the PO of MY bike had a radar detector installed inside where the cassette deck used to be.. and I live in a province where it's illegal to possess one in a vehicle.. It wasn't till later that someone told me what the device was.. egads!! Imagine getting pulled over and explaining that one.. I didn't know the RSV had something behind the panel, it never occurred to me that it was a pop down panel in the first place lol. . So much I learned since then.. What me? I dunno what it is.. huh? what? but but.. blam.- 32 replies

Just got back from recent road trip to New Hampshire and my buddy's bike had such a problem.. it would start ok but man it sounded sick, and if you touched the throttle it would cough and die.. restart.. open choke... blech.. First thing we did was check the headers as Goose mentioned but they were hot so we knew we had a good fire going and poof.. it started to run great and stayed running great ever since.. The ONLY thing I can figure is possible water in the fuel as the bikes sat out in the rain that night (you CAN do that with a Yamaha.. not a Harley, leaving it out in the rain over night.. Not sure if water was the issue but that's all I could think off.. we fueled at the same stations and so forth.. but over night parked in the rain.. who knows

Cruise Control Issue
Seaking replied to ranger391's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
well I'll be... I had to test this out today, the day before yet another road trip down into Yankee Land.. And as advertise... pick your speed, engage cruise control and double tap the RES /ACC button and presto: Instant ON cruise control without any lag back or anything.. SO WEIRD!! and so cool! Thanks for posting that nice tidbit folks!! ROAD TRIP!! See ya next week -
It starts to have a funny smell after a while.. like most dead things... Cheers

Check your connectors under the hood, checking to see if they have tension on them when your turn the bars etc. I had a problem like that in the past and strangely enough, the other wire / cable bundles were crushing the controller cable at the neck and as if it were squeezing out the electrons.. A little more slack and rerouting the cable took care of the problem.. So odd.. but meh.. Best of luck..

Leveling links off/front forks raised in tree
Seaking replied to theostar's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Can this be done with a Midnight Venture where we have the chrome covers on the forks? I currently have leveling links on the bike and though 5'8" and 30 inseam, I don't seem to have any probs putting my feet down... but since I'll be having my front end worked on soon (serviced and such) it might prove to be a great opportunity to lower the front with oem links.. ideas?
