  3. Guessing over heated, bike prolly still very hot when you shut it down, especially doing cones and such.. (I keep burning out my clutch, bleh)

  7. Yes I have seen them turn purple on other people's pipes, not too much of a distraction.. I think it gives it the 'been there been used' look as opposed to the parking lot attraction bike.
  8. I installed a pair of black ceramic coated Rinehart slip ons on my RSV and wow, what a a nice sound! Once the pipes are seasoned in the sound is softened and still throaty with a nice bark when you drop the hammer, yet at cruise the sound is louder than normal but not at all harsh. They look awesome on a Midnight RSV. I'll see if I can some audio / video for how they sound if people are interested. I got these at a cut rate from a Canadian company, nice!
  9. Say again? Actually it is quite loud enough to hear but doesn't always come on.. It won't come if you have your kill switch to OFF for example, when you turn the key.. Once you open the kill switch you'll hear the pump..
  10. Yep I just started mine up to show off the new pipes to a friend and there wasn't a clicking sound.. but yesterday there was.. Odd

  13. I can see where that one might be better.. the one I used wasn't more than 5 inches long inside a plastic box. I had hoped it would actually give me better reception, longer range but it wasn't even close.. if it was 'so much' better I would use it.. but meh.. not worth the while right now. Cheers
  14. Well then, I spent the day trying out two new "hidden antennas" and end result is that I shall keep my Firestiks on the bike.. The final verdict for me, is that the hidden antenna is a good concept, but its not an improvement over the bike system. Both hidden antennas I tried were amplified, which means you have to run a power lead to the bike system to power it up. No matter where I had positioned the antennas on the bike, (under fairing, inside trunk) or which orientation (up sideways etc) it was about the same result every time. The 36" fire sticks were able to grab more signal consistently better than the hidden antennas. However, if you're looking for a bike without sticks hanging out of the back of the bike, these are indeed a great alternative.. but as my ride buddy told me, a RSV without antennas just doesn't look right.. no matter what..   15. So many MUCH thanks to all who responded, wow.. tres cool guys. Looks like I got all I need to get started and make a run of it. Considering my buddy and I are predominantly 'slab riders', taking the slow and sleepy trails will be more of a challenge for us than most could imagine.. but it's one of those trails and routes that has to be done.. from start to finish.. As far as rough roads and construction, no probs.. no matter how rough or how slow due to construction, it can't be any worse than up here at the moment.. wow. Accommodations? lots to go around? reasonably priced? We don't do that camping stuff.. Fuel stops plentiful as well? So looking forward to this run =)

  17. Hi guys, sometime early next month, my buddy and I are heading out on yet another long road trip and we thought of trying something new. Entering the USA at Houlton Maine, we would be proceeding south on the I95. We're thinking of hitting Mount Washington in NH and then down to what we heard is one heck of a nice ride, the "Skyline", the "Blue Ridge Parkway" and then the famous Deels Gap (dragon's tail) If you have detailed info as to where these routes start, how to get there etc via town names to plug into the GPS, what to expect, especially if you yourself have had personal experience on these routes, please do drop me a line. As mentioned, we would be coming from the north heading south.. Thanks in advance.. Cheers
  18. I had some weird probs with mine last year and it turned out to be the silliest and yet strangest reason.. Though the cable from the controller was loose and not 'binding' anywhere, it was however pinched amongst the other wires where it the controller cable came down and around the neck area before heading up to the radio itself.. Sounds stupid and yes, very odd, but it was as if the electrons were being squeezed out.. I rerouted the cable until it was loose and all was good since then.. There was no strain or pull at the controller or radio end of the cable, just that it was being pinched at the neck by other cables.. That's what happened to mine and how I fixed mine..
  19. No idea what a clutch 'leather' is? I can do my own clutch plates, too easy.. however, they are changing the guts of the master cylinder which I'm not inclined to do. Clutch cover gaskets aren't locally available, still takes a week to order them in.. I could use RTV gasket but it's not as clean as a proper gasket ya know? Anyway, I should hope to hear some news by monday.. no big worries, I have to work all weekend anyway so I'm not missing any riding, but I'm hoping to find out what the root cause of this problem is.. I'll let you know what transpires..
  20. Well I did it again, and this time its a deader.. I went on another Advanced rider's course this evening and once again, I cooked my clutch on the 2006 RSV, so badly that there absolutely nil clutch effect when the clutch lever is released out completely.. I can sit there in first gear, clutch fully out and nothing happening.. in any gear for that matter. wow. This past spring, the same thing happened, and the clutch plates were cooked. I had since replaced the whole thing with new steels and friction plates and everything was fine until tonight. I was careful not to over rev the engine, gentle on the controls etc, and even had a fresh oil change yesterday (dino oil).. but during one of the exercises, the clutch let go completely causing me to lose torque to the rear wheel and dropping the bike (no big deal).. I picked it up, did a run on the side of the course and realized the clutch was slipping completely.. oh oh.. I pulled the bike over and shut it down.. I know I did not hear the rad fan running before shutting it down. When we started a new exercise, I then discovered I could not pull away at all in first or any gear.. oh oh.. oh no. I let the bike cool down for an hour. I tried it again but no dice. I had no clutch what so ever. Now I know there is something not right with the clutch system on the bike causing this premature and unwarranted clutch failures. I'm not over revving the engine, not abusing the clutch. And I practice slow riding a lot on the bike but never had any issues until tonight, but tonight it's more sustained than my usual practice periods. Here's what I did notice: The Clutch reservoir is lower than it was when I started. I do not recall ever hearing the radiator fan ever coming on.. I mention this because the other liquid cooled bikes on the course had their fans humming loudly.. the borrowed bike (1500 nomad) is liquid cooled and its fan roared on several times.. But I do not remember hearing mine to be honest.. So here's what I am wondering.. is it possible I cooked the engine oil and thus the clutch if the bike wasn't being properly cooled when the fan wasn't coming on? Is it possible the master cylinder is pooched causing an issue to prematurely burn out the clutch plates? I have the PCW (sp) heavy duty clutch spring installed and had taken out the half disks and installed a full disk as per their instructions. I had not experience any issues at all this summer on the bike's clutch system until tonight (well over 15,000 miles this summer already) So tomorrow morning the bike is being dropped off at a local shop.. I'll be asking them to change out the clutch master cylinder kit as the current one shows signs of abuse and deterioration etc, perhaps its allowing air to enter the system or clutch fluid to leak out.. I'll get them to flush out the fluid as well. I will be asking them to check the rad cooling system, perhaps there is something amiss causing the bike to overheat, cooking the oil, killing the clutch.. Its not me abusing the hell out of the clutch that is killing it, but something is not right with the bike that when abused, causes a premature failure of the clutch system.. When the smoke clears, I'll let you know what was discovered, if anything, as to what caused all this.. Blargh!!!
  21. My bike, being a US bike, shows its ODO in miles while I fill up in litres.. So what I do know is that for every 10 miles I run on the ODO, an average fuel burn is roughly 1 litre. This is the average.. If I ride it like I stole it, then it's a lot more.. If I ride it like Miss Daisy, then I get far on a tank of gas. But it's that 1 litre per 10 miles is my base mark. My friend and I do a 40 mile slab run for coffee (Halifax to Truro) and we do it in different configurations.. one will be in 5th while the other in 4th all the way, holding a 120 kph on the clock (110 speed limit real speed) and depending on the winds, and who is leading, we get all kinds of fuel mileage.. The only thing I know is consistent on this bike is that any amount of head winds, and your mileage will suck canal water.. (The Rideau?) Let me know if you're doing Port Dover this year. I may be passing through Ottawa to see a buddy, might be able to hook up and make a run or compare notes.. or do a Timmies Cheers M8
  22. Great info Dave.. Yes, I was aware of the directional venue of the CB antenna.. When I mentioned of having it in the 'bag', I meant as taking it off the mount and 'storing' it away for when its not needed. I seldom ever use it, but don't want to completely do away with it, cuz ya never know.. Some says when we're traveling down the highway without comms on, we'd have the CB on at 0 volume. When you wanted the other person's attention about upcoming turns or a warning, a double tap on the mic button would cut out his AM/FM radio,.. a poor man's signaling system lol.. So just looking for something that works, short enough not to be intrusive while on the bike and small enough to store in one of the bags when not installed / mounted.. I had seen some Harley Bikes with a short CB antenna on them.. I should ask how well those work.. just about the thing I need.. Thanks to all for the great info..
  23. Nice setup, shame it's $20 shipping to Canada... At $57 I would have bought one, but not at an additional $20 mark up.. shame. I had the Diamond R one on the bike but the cup kept bouncing out of the holder.. rough roads here..
  24. Thanks for the info lads.. The short 8 or 12" ones would work for what I'm looking for but gees, is the range cut down to mere hundreds of yards?? The idea would be to remove the antenna and carry it in the bag for those rare moments when it would be needed, as in group rides or catching the local bear reports and such on the highways.. a couple hundred yards might work.. Hmmm I currently do sweeps without the radio, simply can't stand the senseless chatter I'll let you know how it works out.. cheers
  25. Hi guys, what's the shortest CB antenna I can mount on my RSV? I know I may be sacrificing a lot of range by going shorter but I seldom use CB but don't want to give up the capability. I currently have the 36" Firestiks and mods on both sides but soon going to try out the hidden amplified am/fm antenna on the bike.. if it works that well, then I would want to reduce the CB antenna to balance out the look of the bike without losing the CB antenna completely.. Part number, where to purchase etc etc.. would be appreciated.. Cheers
