  1. Anyone have a rear rotor for my 86 that they want to sell? Mine is kaput!
  2. Well I have bled the brakes many times and i do not have any air in the system. Still have the grab and slip issue. Only thing i can think of is maybe it is the composition of the new pads. Different brand that what i had origionally but the material looks the same. Never had this issue with the old set of brakes so i doubt i have a warped rotor. 2 pistons were sticking but i was able to break them free and popped all of them out for a cleaning. The seals were still good and leak no fluid at all.
  3. bone stock pads and still bleeding off air
  4. I replaced my rear pads and discovered 2 pistons were stuck. Removed the caliper and removed each piston. Had a little gunk to remove from each piston and now it works great. After i replaced the pads i have noticed that they seem to grab and slip a little. Very noticable especially when using the rear to slow down at high speed. Never had this happen with the old brakes. Dont know if the rotor is bent or the brake pads need to set. Any ideas?
  5. I have noticed slippage from what i think is the clutch when i shift from 1st to 2nd under hard acceleration (full throttle). If i back off the throttle it is ok, seems like it grabs then it is good to go. This also will happen going from 2nd to 3rd but only under the same conditions. I usually ride conservatively but sometimes I like to hit it once in awhile for a little stress relief. My bike has 30,000 miles on it and it is an 86 model. Time for a new clutch? If that is needed then I take it that it will need new springs and a pressure plate also. How tough will it be to get to the slave cyl that seems to be buried in the block, since i will rebuild this also?
  6. I finally had time to do a few things to my bike and one of them was to tighten up the head bearings. Now the wobble is gone but the bike seems to wander a bit on the road. Im thinking that i tightened the nut a little too mutch. What is the best way to know just how tight the steering bearings have to be ? I had my bike on the centerstand when i adjusted mine but i gave the nut a little extra snugness and that might be where the problem lies. Any ideas ?
  7. I changed the oil on my bike yesterday. It took exactly one gallon of oil. I noticed that the oil darkened quite a bit after I let the bike run for a few minutes. There must be alot of oil that cannot be drained in the tranny/crankcase during a routine oil change. I believe that the bottom bolt on the tranny also will drain the oil from the tranny but mine is hard to get to. Any suggestions on how to get rid of that last bit of oil or do I just ride and get used to having a bit of old oil mixed in with the new?
  8. Im not happy with my stock headlight. Thinking about a xenon or a hid conversion kit costs around 125.00. Any other bulbs i should try before i spend the money on one of these kits?
  9. Bought a new battery for the scoot today but it seems like the starter is dragging. Last fall my battery bit the dust so I thought the slow crank was because of the battery. Starts slow and the battery is giving all it has. New battery is charged fully. Maybe time to tear down the starter and clean it up inside? Any ideas?
  10. If ya want more power get a first gen:cool10::cool10: If ya want more speed get a first gen:cool10::cool10: . If you spend a few bucks you can do some mods to the engine but then you open a whole can of worms and reliability will be a potential issue. Hey for 1200 bucks it is worth a try but you will need to port the heads so they will flow better and deliver more air to the combustion chamber. Be careful and have fun
  11. The battery on my 86 venture stranded me the other day. After i got a jump start i rode home and shut the bike off. I decided to see if the battery had enough juice to start the bike and of course it did. I was able to start the bike many times with a hot engine. After the bike sat for a week i went to start it and it cranked a bit then that was all. I guess i have a weak battery as i do not know how old it is. I have noticed that the volt gauge says around 14 or 16 volts when im riding but i notice a dimming of the lights when i hit the brakes. I guess that the stator puts out more amps at say 3500 rpm's versus 1500 or 2000 rpm's. I will replace the battery next spring but could a weak stator be part of the problem also?
  12. Save yourself a few bucks and buy mobil one 10/40 or 15/50 if you want syn. Rotella T syn in 5/40 is a good bet also and you can get it at any truck stop or Wal Mart.
  13. If you have questions about friction modifiers go to www.bobistheoilguy for answers.
  14. The wife and I did a charity ride last week. Lots of bikes and people. So we are ridin with a group and come to a stop sign. I stop and proceed when a guy behind me decides he's gonna try and pass me up. Im in second gear and i hear his metric vtwin creepin up next to me. I figure i will give my bike a good run and see if i can keep up with this guy. I twist the throttle and my wife grabs the back of my jacket. Off we go and we are both turnin and burnin. It was kind of close there for a bit but i was surprized that i was actually keeping up and pulling ahead slowly. At 7k i shifted to 3rd and then the distance between us started to get large. I could hear his bike rappin out as he shifted gears but it seemed like he just ran out of throttle. I was a little self conscious about riding an older bike amongst all the newer bikes but i do like this bike. After keeping up with the pack and holding my position, I like it even better. I had no idea this bike could hold its own up to newer bikes. A few people checked out my bike during a break. They thought it was a Goldwing til they saw the Yamaha on the back. Yamaha should have promoted this bike a little harder and longer. I saw a few Ventures and talked to a few people who were riding them. Even saw an 83 with a sidecar.
  15. This site is loaded with info. Ask a question or look it up in the forums. I have saved a good chunk of cash because of this site.
  16. Don, stay strong for your wife. I know you support her in this very trying time. Be there for her, that means everything. Take care of yourself. My wife and I have been through quite a lot ourselves so i can relate. I will say a prayer for you.
  17. Rich, the weight of oil that you are using is not energy conserving which makes it ok for moto use ( look for the starburst on the bottle). Its the moly and friction modifiers that make energy conserving oils detrimental to wet clutches. Bubbajbi, Run what you want provided it meets the specs required. Filter wise any one will do the job but you might consider maybe a wix, purolater, ac or something along that line. Hey fram is ok and so are wally world filters especially if you change them every 3k. If you have oil questions check out www.bobistheoilguy.com. Take a look and get the answers you seek. :cool10:
  18. I would be more concerned about the air filter vs. the oil filter. The first line of defense is your air filter, it is what keeps dirt from entering your engine. If you are riding in a very dusty area then you may have to change your oil and filters more often. Oil keeps the dirt in suspension and of course the oil filter removes dirt particles. I dont think that your oil filter is plugged with dirt or even close to it, provided you ride on blacktop and not gravel roads. As i see it the whole point of using syn is for the extended drain intervals. 3k is early in my opinion where as say 5 or 6k might be more realistic. You will only know with a UOA which is available from many labs in the USA. If you are sure that 3k is your comfort zone then go with Rotella, Dello or any diesel 15/40 oil. For 10 dollars or less you have a gallon of oil that is better than dealer spec oil and less expensive. A good source of info is www.bobistheoilguy.com for any questions you have about oil. There is a motorcycle oil section in the forums in which you will find a lot of great info. Keep ridin and dont worry:322:
  19. Happy Labor Day to all my fellow Ventureriders. I enjoy this site and i have noticed that a few questions have come up about who uses what oil and/or which oil is best for my bike. I have found that www.bobistheoilguy.com is a great site for oil information. That site has helped me save money, get free oil, and changed my mind about the 3k oil change. Take a look sometime.
  20. Changed out the fluid and it is back to normal!!! Its nice to have that feel back.
  21. Don't worry about the zinc. Rotella will have more than enough zinc and phosphorus to protect our engines and even more so than regular motorcycle oil. The new formulation is still a top quality oil that can handle the demands of a motorcycle engine and still stay in grade. Any 15/40 oil will work well in our bikes. If you want to find out about oil and how it holds up in Motorcycles, Cars, Trucks, Boats and even Lawnmowers go to http://www.bobistheoilguy.com. Click on to a subject line go to the bottom of the page and click on the drop menu, go to used oil analysis-motorcycle and check it out. Be careful, it is an addictive site:rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf:
  22. Well i noticed last night that i have to pull the lever almost all the way back to have a full release. Found that out at a stop light. I have noticed over time that the lever seems like it needs to move a little farther back to release the clutch. The clutch does engage at the same point it always has. It has been hot here in KC and humid for most of the summer. I don't know how old the fluid is but it is not clear but more of a dull darkish tinted color. I have done a few searches on this site and my first course of action will be to change the fluid. I havent had any leaks so maybe a new hose if the fluid swap doesn't do the trick. This site is a great resource for repair how to do's because the members actually do their own repairs and let others know the little things that make a repair job less frustrating. I will keep you posted.
  23. Got the seals from mawonline.com but factory seals will work and should last for many years. I was lucky as the nut came right off the bottom of the forks. I like the abs idea, I would have tried it but i didnt have a piece handy so i did it the hard way. I only had to replace the seals, everything else was good including the circlips. I did replace the factory springs with progressives. I cleaned up the lower forks in my kitchen sink. Dishwashing soap removes brakedust fast. Just put on the soap, scrub and rinse. Cleaned out the inside of the forks while i was at it. The fork oil was very dark and was most likely origional and it had a bit of junk floating around so i flushed the forks for good measure. I replaced the fork oil with 10 wt Bel Ray. I put on a new set of brake pads and now Im riding. My wife was not happy to see me using the kitchen sink to clean up my lower forks but i had to do what a man does with his wife in that situation. I CUT A DEAL. I told her that when i was done fixing the bike I would take her out shopping to get some lingerie and leather so she would look soooo hot on MY bike and it would be good for the marriage also. After a few minutes of her laughing and saying words like dreaming, fantasy and so fourth she reminded me after years of marriage and all the children there was no way she was going out like that in public. OK so deal 2 was we would ride the bike to a favorite steakhouse an hour away and have dinner. DEAL!!!
