  1. No idea yet, that would be one of the things on the agenda for discussion. Which way do you think we should go down?
  2. Hey all, just a general notice, that some of us Ontario Members will be heading to Deals Gap, on a 4-5 day road trip, Sept 21. As of right now, it is Dragerman, Rob (forget his forum nick) and myself. This trip will be during the week (Monday to Thursday or Friday) as it was suggested that it is better to ride the Tail of the Dragon, during the week. In September most of the kids will be back in school, so tourists will be at a minimum. This trip is in the very first stages of planning. I am announcing it, for 2 reasons, to find out if anyone wants to come with us (or meet up with us along the way) and to get suggestions from some of the members here who have been there. I am really looking forward to this trip. I am sure before we go, we will get together to discuss the trip in detail, and finalize plans. Ok, so who is interested? Being interested does not commit you to the trip. Once we figure out some meets to do planning, I will announce them. I would be happy if there were 6-8 bikes going, the more the merrier I guess. Feel free to drop Dragerman, or myself an email or PM. Lets git 'er done!
  3. Why no riding? We have heel AND toe shifters, and if it was your right foot...who needs brakes anyways?
  4. Well, I got 1 of my new lids yesterday, I went with a ZOX Genessis SVS helmet. http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=86-5600*/1540.0.48340.54611.0.0.0 It is a modular (flip up) helmet, with an inner Solar Visor that I can lower at any time. I normally fit into an XL, but in this product, I felt the Large was a better fit. It accepts my bluetooth headset with no modifications. I am still waiting on the Shark Evoline helmet, waiting to find dealers with sizes in stock so I can try them on.
  5. That one works.
  6. I found an even better way to buy my Zumo 550. I went to Best Buy, and showed them Radioworld's price, which they beat by 10%. I also reccomend buying the extended warranty. The way best buy handles warranty after the fact, is to give you a full credit gift card for the value you paid for the unit. By the time the warranty is up, you will probably be able to buy the next generation Zumo, which by the way is already out, called the 660. Just my suggestion.
  7. I am really glad that she is ok. Hamstring pulls are the pits. I guess we will all just have to go on that same ride again once she is up and about!!
  8. Letters? Those are like hard copy e-mails right?
  9. Just a thought, but if you were riding at 75 MPH, there is really no way you could have smelled anything coming from BEHIND you. Anything you smelled, you rode INTO, from the front.
  10. Hey Abdul, no worries it was NOT the custom lid, it was my SY-MAX. The skull helmet only comes out for special occasions.
  11. The taxes are exactly the same with USPS and UPS and FedEx, what makes USPS more cost effective, is the BROKERAGE charges. Any parts with a "declared" value of less than $20.00 is not subject to taxes by Canada Customs. I recently had a part sent to me, with a declared value (sometimes talking to the vendor can be usefull) of $23.05. Sent by UPS. So, Canada customs converts the $23.05 to CDN$ then charges me taxes on that amount, about $3.25 or so. Then UPS charges me $45 to collect and process that $3.25, meaning I was expected to pay $48 on top of the part and the shipping. USPS charges a flat $5. Luckily, I was not home when they first tried to deliver it. I found the notice on my door with the details of what I owed. I called UPS, and spoke to someone in their brokerage dept. I made my case, and explained, that since parts under $20 are not subject to taxes, but mine was over by $3, I was in actuality being charged $48 for the $3 that my part was over. The lady was quite understanding, and reversed the brokerage charge portion as a "goodwill credit" When the package arrived the next day, I owed $3.25. Which I happily paid. So sometimes a call, and a civil conversation can be of help too. That being said, another option might be to get to know some of our wonderful members south of the border. Nuff said? Any excuse to ride I say.
  12. I got to see that gooey mess of melted tape and insulation first hand when we visited Bob yesterday. Luckily Bob is an electronics specialist, so that major job will be well within his capability. When we first showed up, it looked like Bob was untangling Christmas lights with all the wires in his hands, upon closer inspection it was his wiring harness. I wish you good luck Bob. Hope to ride with you soon! I took some pics too.
  13. As I tried to clear up after my first post, there is certainly some damage to the helmet, although no damage to the shell. The guide gear mechanism of the flip face, has been damaged. The chin bar still locks firmly in place, however, it does not stay raised anymore. I believe that structurally the helmet is sound when locked, but since the gear mech is broken, the helmet is not 100%. I am going to buy a helmet, and attempt to repair my current lid, to have as a spare.
  14. I just wanted to post a video of the installed LED ring lights, that make great use of the dark turn signal lenses, during running and braking. I think with the LED brake light board, this addition is a must for those wanting increased visibility. Dragerman also has these lights installed, and I can tell you, they make a world of difference in seeing him. They are bright, and can be seen clearly. This video is of my bike an 06 RSTD, same results can be expected on Ventures. An inexpensive way to make yourself seen. The install took about 2 hours start to finish, it helped that Charlie had done his already. No special tools are required, all connectors and wiring and circuits are included. The LED rings silicone to the inside of your signal lenses. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwMwOIeY5b4&feature=player_embedded]YouTube - brake[/ame]
  15. Thanks again for all the input and suggestions. I can tell you that all the new helmet technology, and promoted features of new lids, makes this a very tough descision. What I am thinking of right now, Is the Shark Evoline, HJC Sy-Max II, the ZOX Genesis and if it every becomes a reality, the REEVU helmet which I think could be a huge improvement in helmet safety. www.reevu.com . I woke up early, and hit a few bike shops to try on helmets, and even found more helmets that interest me. But I think I have narrowed it down. Now I am just on a mission to find the best price with shipping, or locally. As I forsee that I may actually buy 2, just to have them. I have also tried to find a supplier for the parts I need for my current helmet to make it 100% again, which may be a challenge in it's own. I will let you know which one I decide to go with.
  16. I did check there, but they do not carry Shark helmets, and they also do not seem to carry the SY-MAX II in the HJC models either. Thanks for the suggestion. http://www.shark-evoline.com/
  17. Thanks for the input everyone. I looked some more at my lid, and indeed, the plastic ratcheting gears on the right side of the flip portion, have cracked, that is what is causing the difficulty in opening. The chin bar was up when it dropped. I am going to buy a new helmet, but I might look into a repair kit for the hinge as well, and have a spare. Thanks for all the opinions, and suggestions for places to buy. I am really leaning towards the Shark Evoline, I really like that it is rated in both the closed, and full open position, which is a first for modulars I believe. My only concern with that helmet, is attaching my bluetooth module to the side. I want to make sure the arm does rotate too low when moving it to the back and knock it off. I did not see the Evoline on any of the websites that offer us a discount, so it might be an eBay purchase, or other online source, looks like about 2X the cost of the new HJC Sy-max II. If it functions as well as it says it does, then will be a nice addition. Sonny
  18. Well, the helmet is not 100% anymore. When it dropped the chin bar was lifted. The right side mechanism seems to be slipping, and it is difficult to raise it up now. It does still lock down, which is good, but I don't mind spending a few hundred bucks for a good lid, my noggin is worth it!
  19. Well it has happened. I dropped a helmet for the first time. I have bumped my helmet before, on a door frame or wall, but this time, totally my fault, my helmet bounced. It was sitting on my seat, which I have done many many times, my helmet sits nice and flat on the seat. But not when it gets knocked off by a stray elbow . Anyways, I have been wearing this HJC Symax for about 3 years, and I am considering 2 helmets. HJC Symax II and the Shark Evoline. Does anyone have reviews, or good places and prices for either of these? Having worn HJC all my biking life, I am comfortable with them, but that does not mean I am opposed to trying a new company that has good reviews. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. This will be a quick purchase, as I am not sure exactly how much damage this helmet has.
  20. What kind of GPS is it? You can buy GPS specific mounts for many kinds. Look for Ram mounts. Obviously you would be running on unit battery power alone, so not sure how long the GPS will function. The best motorcycle GPS solution is of course the Garmin Zumo, which has all mounts as well as a car mount for the unit. Weather proof, and has its own power supply you tie into the bike to power it. That is the best suggestion I can give you. If you tell me exactly what brand and model, I will try to help you find a suitable mount.
  21. If you have a bluetooth helmet, you can hook directly to your zumo, and pair your zumo with your phone. No need for extra cables for just phone or voice prompts.
  22. Kinda, let me explain it better. The base alone, has the magnets, soft bottom (no scratch) and a waterproof map pocket. The main compartment, securely zips to that base, to give you more storage, the main compartment ALSO has a map pocket on the top. So you can have the choice of having just a map holder, or the full room if you need it. Hope this explains better
  23. I got a fantastic bag from Ebay last year. It is by a Canadian company called Motopak. They have all different sizes, and their auctions all start at $0.99 The bag is expandable, and you can even unzip the main compartment from the magnetic base, if you just need a map holder alone. The main compartment also has a map pocket on top. I love mine, and it has very strong magnets, with a non-scratch surface. The zipper pulls and construction are great. Here is a link to one of their auctions. And from here you can also see the selection of other bags and sizes that they sell, roll bags, tail bags, saddle bags etc. And from what I can tell, all the bags come with bungees, and rain covers too. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Magnetic-Motorcycle-Tank-Bag-NEW-MotoPak-GT-17_W0QQitemZ370200182358QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item5631a67e56&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
  24. It's called a pocket full of heavy nuts, or ball bearings. Not that I am encouraging that at all
  25. Looks like I am going too!! I know it is short notice, but if anyone coming by Hamilton has not left yet, I would love to ride down with you. I figure to leave Hamilton around 12:45 - 1 PM. Give me a shout if you are coming by this way.
