In my mind the single biggest factor in the pilot making a successful situation out of this.............He's a glider pilot in his spare time. He knew exactly what to do with a plane that basically had no power. Secondary to that..Airbus evidently builds a helluva plane in the A320.

Couple of comments...The mayors is a first class jerk and most folks in and around the area know it and have commented on it from time to time. Canning the rallies was his brainstorm and at the time with all high emotions due to the activities and incidents associated with the "bikefest" (black bike week in case I have the name wrong) event, it was easy to convince the bobblehead city council members to go along. Of course once they got started, they didn't stop until 15 ordinances later. Yes there were some citizen complaints..yes there were some (limited) business complaints. (mayor got a lot of mileage out of the murders and the public sex and public drunkeness, defacating in public on the street/sidewalks and I believe I heard about drugs as well) The big problem that I heard privately was that it was primarily not the H-D rallies (though they had their share of issues), but there was NO way to ban one and not the other without creating an enormous cultural and legal problem, so both had to go! The alledged "extra cost" due to additional manpower requirements, etc. is a load; the city still made a substantial amount of money even after all those costs were factored in. The comment that the rallies kept visitors away is questionable as well, since most of the "family" visitors they want you to think were impacted, had their kids still in school during the time of rallies. He also is trying to convince readers of that letter that there is much wider sentiment against than there really is. He and the city council mistakenly thought that Horry County Council and other municipalities in the area would simply rubber-stamp MBs actions......They didn't and they aren't. They limited some permitting and such, but thats about it. The sound ordinance is 89dB at 20" straight out the end of the pipe. My 4pipe RSTD with Cobra dragpipes (with baffles) pulled an 85 if that gives you a frame of reference. The helmet deal I believe is still being contested because the state doesn't require one for all over age 21. Still though, the ordinance stands unless and until it gets shot down by the state. Since the cops answer to the mayor and council, be assured the new ordinances will be enforced inside the city limits. And from what I can tell, they will rachet up enforcement of other existing laws as well (which is what they should have done in the first place to keep a lid on things). A lot of what the mayor is saying on the city website link some one put up here is total BS and an attempt to make it look like the "public had spoken".......NOT! Though one thing he says IS true..by and large The majority of residents and businesses aren't anti-bike or biker. The mayor and city council and a percentage of residents and a few businesses, however are! I've talked to a lot of guys about it including Harley guys and there is a contingent that says basically we're not setting boot nor tire inside city limits. There were guys delivering toys for the toys for tots drive and they stopped outside the city, transferred their collection to others to make the final delivery. It seems the majority, though say..."fine! the heck with Myrtle Beach proper, but we're still coming to the beach area whenever and on whatever we see fit to ride or drive! They're determined to do business with folks OUTSIDE of the city limits as a kind of "spit in yer eye" response. They are determined to go wherever they see fit as is their right. Then you have the last group which say the heck with the entire area if not the entire state. I don't agree with it, but I definitely understand it!! AND, on top of it all.....There are a LOT of people in and around Myrtle Beach that have and ride motorcycles. I can virtually guarantee you that they won't be selling their bikes or riding "around" Myrtle Beach, just because the mayor and city council have a hair up the butt over motorcycles. So, there's my nickel's worth.

Geese..yeah Flock big enough to show up on radar. Engines ingested a sufficient number to stop and/or damage them. They're designed to survive bird ingestion, but too much of a bad thing is...well.... a bad thing!!!! Pilot did a jam-up job. On top of it all.....he put that sucker down almost right in front of the ferry terminal. There were more boats available than you could shake a stick at!!! Nicely done.

That is so cool! They obviously put a ton of work into that.

My wife quit like 10 years ago, but it was extremely hard for her. She quit cold turkey because of a medical issue which came with an "OR ELSE" clause in the treatment. I was (am) very proud of her. She's very strong when she needs to be. I, on the other hand, was still smoking up until February 2 of 2007. I was an idiot smoker. If I got a slight cold or a sore throat I'd just switch to Kool or Salem for a day or two, then go back to My usual Marlboro reds or on occasion..Pall Mall regular un filtered. I was always a situational smoker. You know, morning coffee, mid-morning coffee, luch, after meals, after/with a cold beer, on a trip. I enjoyed smoking as long as I didn't have run anywhere. I already knew I had COPD and was trying to cut down...I was down to a half a pack a day from 2-2.5 packs a day. Long story short.......I got a cold on Friday and by Sat. in was in my chest and I literally could not breathe. It was like fast onset pneumonia or something. I've never been so scared in my life; I seriously thought I was going to die before I could get it straightened out. In the wee hours of the night, I had a couple of serious discussions with my Creator and "made a bargain". I told Him, if He would only cut me some slack and recover, I'd never put another to my lips. Finally got to the Dr. and they put me on IV steroid of some kind and some heavy duty antibiotic and I gradually returned to some semblance of normal. Have stayed good to my word since. I've wanted one on occasion, but my agreement and a vivid memory are sufficient to keep me away from them. That my story for what it's worth!

First, I think everyone should read Dragonriders post in the inspirational section, titled "sack Lunches". Second, We had 10 members of an Army unit earn 10 Silver Stars in Afgan combat (a military record). The story is here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,466404,00.html Knowing we have men the likes of these out there getting the job done.....I'm so proud of these young men..

Just kidding! I'm not crackin on Harley. Did any of you catch the program on Speed this past week that showed a Harley concept bike from years past. It was a v4, watercooled and had snorkles that looked alot like what we find now on the Vmax. It was called project Nova. Not bad lookin as a starting point. Per the article, they had plans for a v6 as well. OH well! There's an article on it: http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2007/04/06/harley-davidson-v4-nova/ Shame they didn't proceed with it. I had no idea they had even toyed with idea of a watercooled v4, but then I never paid much attention to Harleys. Hmmmmm! Surprise, surprise...learn something new every day. I must admit, I am duly impressed.

The store would probably be the size of one of the containers bringing in all the imported stuff!!!

Now, why the heck couldn't they have used that foot position on the Goldwing???? 680cc? ?? Why? And that windscreen-wanabee...what the heck is that? Looks like it would force the bugs into your face! Spiffy enough for around town, I suppose, but it doesn't even look comfortable.

Prayers as requested!!

and how many times have you kicked yourself for getting rid of that?????

Brad, I understand your thinking and can't say I wouldn't do similarly, were I in your place; good luck in selling the bike. If I may ask..How much power (electricity) does this plant produce and what is the fuel source? My thought is that even if GM activity is severely curtailed in that location, power to the grid is power to the grid, whether GM is using or not. The power infrastructure (especially in the north) is bumping supply limitations all the time, and to arbitrarily shut down a power producing plant because the original client has scaled back ops, to me doesn't make very good sense. If the plant has been there a long time, then the option of keeping it generating revenue is good for the books (provided the cost to keep it running isn't outrageous). You also said the plant is owned by GM, but I assume operated under some sort of lease arrangement by Detroit Edison (since you work for them). That would tend to lend credence to my thoughts above regarding continued operations . It also makes me wonder if Detroit Edison wouldn't simply buy the facility if GM curtailed ops there. Another thought...IF GM ceased ops there..and no other entity want the GM facilities; your plant would have considerable excess steam capacity, possibly enough to run another turbine/ generator. (Another potential reason for Detroit Ed to buy & operate it, or any of a number of electrical power brokers/conglomerates, who buy and operate smaller plants and sell power to the local utilities. Even in that scenario, it would still be kept running while the transition was going on) Now I admit, part of my reason for a little creative speculating is to put a positive spin on the possibilities for you there. Of course, if you have been told that if "this" happens, then "that" will happen and you're history....then all my optimistic commentary is for naught!!! Will GM go under? I doubt it very much. They may undergo Chapter 11, but that will let them reorganize while continuing operations. Possibly merge with Chrysler? Again, they don't have to stop to do it. They might streamline, but they won't stop. If they get the bailout, they still have to streamline, trim some in their ops, but they still keep going in some form. For what it's worth, Brad.. Just me thinkin out loud..

?????????? Are you saying you don't use paypal or Ebay??????? That's fine if you don't, mind you, I'm just curious. Regarding the use of links. There is software available for free that will tell you whether the site you're landing on is spoofing you or not. (spoofstick is one that comes to mind) and you can click on the little icon at the bottom of the internet explorer screen (next to the little world globe where the page load progress bar appears) and check to see if the that site you are on is a phishing website. If you have a good antivirus suite on your machine, one of the functions will be a screening for potentially harmful sites. Plus, if you desire additional protection, there is free software for that as well. If you're out there all over the web alot, run virus & malware scans more often. Finally, if you happen to have more than one computer and use a router, you automatically gain the benefit of a hardware firewall. Now I'm simplifying alot, but a little commonsense protection goes a long way these days and if you're still wary, use Mozilla's Firefox as it seems to be a little better in the security dept. according to most reports. Bottom line...Sure....be judicious about putting your personal and financial info. out there, but there are a multitude of ways to limit vulnerability in the process. That's my 3cents
