  1. The following report is in no way meant to tarnish a brand at all but my wife and I both feel it's important to give honest feedback so that people who use forums to educate themselves, get all the information possible to help the make decisions. I received the Ultimate seat late last Thursday and did the following rides, all with my wife on the back to test both seats properly. Friday we rode about 150 miles Saturday we rode about 200 miles Sunday we ride about 300 miles Monday (today) we rode about 100 miles Despite giving the seat lots of miles and different situations to give it a fair chance, here is why it's being returned. I don't like typing this because as a Canadian, I really wanted to buy and enjoy a seat that's made by a Canadian company. I realize that not everyone will like the same type of seat so this report is strictly what my wife and I experienced. My wife says the pillion is no better if not worse than the stock seat. Every day that we tested it, withing an hour or less she could feel the seams in the seat and felt like her butt bones were on the seat pan. Naturally this caused not only numb bum, but pain as well, long after each ride was done. I had a problem which came within 30 miles on each day of testing the seat. It caused me moderate to severe Sciatic pain on my left side and nothing I tried as far as seating and foot position made a difference. I also experienced the same numb bum and pain as my wife did but mine didn't last as long after each ride (cuz I'm tuffer than her ). The last time I experience this kind of pain on a bike was on my Goldwing which had 150,000 miles on the seat and my Doctor said that the pain I was experiencing was because the foam in the seat was collapsing and I was sitting on the seat pan. That's the exact feeling I have with the brand new Ultimate seat. The last thing is that although Ultimate advertises that their seat is the same seating position as the stock seat, it's at least an inch higher than the stock seat which is important to a short a$$ like me with a 28" inseam. We've had 3 Mustang seats in the past and have always been pleased with them. The reason with went with Ultimate this time was because of the seat height (Mustang is apparently 1" higher than stock) and because we wanted to buy Canadian because we'ed heard good things about Ultimate. We'll see tomorrow how good their money back guarantee is won't we. Anyway, still debating on the Mustang as I type this but suspect that I'll order a Mustang in the morning. Again, this is only our experience and we fully understand that lot's of people love their Ultimate seats. Greg
  2. Well Friends, After telling my wife what a great time I had at Vogel, she wanted to go to Asheville, NC. I guess I dont have to tell you how great it was riding around the Estate. I've put over 3K miles on the Midnight in the last 2 months. We're hooked !!! I really cant wait till my wife gets to meet all the nice people on this site.
  3. Thanks Skydoc:clap2::clap2: Just when I thought things coulden't get any better then owning a First Gen venture, I found this web site. Me and my wife who are very proud of our bike, traveled to the WV Skid in. There we met some great people and took a look at some bike,s. I left there and Bike ran better than when i arrived thanks to frends from this site. Today me and wife travled to SkyDoc's home and installd new carb diaphrams and tweaked the carbmixture screws along with a carb sync. I'm proud to say 46.6 mpg on the way home. Best mileage yet with the bike and the get up and go is great. This man Knows his first gen's. Hats Off!!!. Jean thanks for the hospitality we had a great time, and Earl cooks a mean burger if i must say so.... Again Thanks Earl & Jean.. p.s.-Deb found her key-it was in her shoes! go figure
  4. We made it home from Vogel about 3:00, got everything unloaded but not sorted out, that will come. I just want to thank everyone who came out to support our St. Jude effort, dont have a final figure yet I will be tallying that soon and posting it. I also want to thank all those that pitched in and helped with the rides, picking up downed bikes( only 1), carb syncs, everything mechanical, giving rides to little old ladies, not once but twice, food servers, those that donated door prizes, just a great bunch of people., But most of all I need to apologize to someone very special to me, I forgot to thank the most important person in my life, and that is my wife Charlene, while at the shelter I thanked a lot of people openly and forgot my loving wife, so, Thank you for all your support Charlene, I couldn't have done it without your support, I love you and thank you for putting up with me................
  5. Got call last night from son that wife and sister was in accident. Got to hospital and was told she was fine but with multiple bumps ,bruises, seat belt rash etc, sister in law has dislocated ankle and arm is spattered with glass cuts etc.. Was hit on passenger front wheel by 17yr old running stop-sign then car came around and slammed passenger side in ,then pushed her sideways about 50-60 feet thru corn-field before stopping.Lucky we had side air-bags(Mitsubishi Outlander sport-utility) Saw it in the dark at impound so it was hard to see but passenger side is wiped out, will post pictures as soon as I can. Of course wife gave me heck for leaving work and wasn't going to call me at 9:00pm break to tell me to stay at work(accident around 4-5pm) Both women are pretty sore this morning and sister in law is hobbling around on crutches. Have to go to insurance for coverage and rental car etc. Kid was on gravel road and was only charged with failing to stop at sign with $150 fine and 3 points. Police said he tried to stop but brother in law said he only seen marks on pavement around impact site and not in gravel where they said. O-WELL what can you do they said he talked with Sargent and he agreed.(will see myself today)
  6. Hello All, Summer has finally arrived in Ontario. Great riding weather now. I went for a ride with Relic and his wife Dianne yesterday to Meninite country and you couldn't have asked for better weather or friends. I'm off to Espanola in an hour on my bike and returning on Tuesday. Then the Europe trip on Friday without the bike, I'll be back packing with my wife and one of my sons for the first week and a bit, then finishing with a weeks cruise of the Mediterainian I'll miss out on the Meet and Farewell for Brad and Lonna on Aug 22nd along with countless other things that will be happening on the Venture site. I wish everyone an excellent end of the summer filled with activities and great weather. I look forward to getting back on the site in September and catching up with what everyone has been doing. Dave
  7. Hello Everyone: I'm the new guy on the block here I suppose. On Saturday I picked up my "new to me" 2006 RSTD. After putting on around 600 miles so far with my wife on the back, the stock seat just might be ok. After much moving around I seemed to find a sweet spot that wasn't torturing my tail bone. Anyway, here's my question (finally). I put a Utopia backrest on our 98 goldwing and my wife found that it really restricted her room on the back so does anybody have any input as to how their wife feels with the Utopia on the bike. Thanks in advance for your advice and input. Greg
  8. Just got a call tonight from the wife. I'm working out of town and my wife called me earlier and told me that a storm sent my bike over on its side. It spent about 1 -2 hours on its side till a friend could get over to the house and stand it back up. HE said the bilke cranked wright up after a quick check of the oil. No coolant as he could tell. When he cranked it up it immediately started leaking. Seems it broke the water pipe yet again. Is there anything that can be done to strenthen the highway/engine guards on a first gen.?? And for all the mechanics out there. Are there anything other than cosmetics I should look for ?? My buddy has his license and rides regular so he took it for a short ride and everything tracked well and seemed to function normally. He's out as many miles on this bike as I have so he knows how it works. Any help or ideas will be greatly apreciated. Thanks in advance. David ps.I was going to send funds to the oops I dropped it club but since the wind did it I sent the $5 to the ope fund instead.
  9. My wife and I decided to go for a ride downtown in Toronto last Friday night. It was a warm and muggy night. My bike had been sitting in the garage all day. I pulled out the choke and pushed the start button. It didn't want to start right away but fired up after a second push on the button. I reduced the choke as soon as it started and pushed it off entirely within a minute and a half. Off we rode. Me on my 06 RSTD and my wife on her Suzuki C50. Everything seemed fine until we got downtown near the lake and my bike started missing on one cylinder at idle (a popping sound on the right side that my wife said she could hear as she sat ten feet behind me on her bike) and baby backfires on deceleration. I was also noticing the smell of gas. We turned around and headed for home. I wound it up in first and second a couple of times as I pulled away from traffic lights and it purred like a kitten each time. After that the problem was gone. No missing, no backfiring, and no gas smell. The next morning I noticed fuel spots down the length of my driveway and a larger spot where I had stopped briefly before we headed out onto the street. I hopped in my truck and headed to NAPA to pick up a can of Sea Foam. I poured about half a can of Sea Foam into the nearly full fuel tank and have put a couple of hundred more kilometers under the wheels during the last two days with no further signs of trouble. I pulled the right rear spark plug and it appeared to be clean and dry. Didn't feel like pulling the fuel tank to check the front one! Has anybody else experienced this problem? I don't want to find myself in this position during our upcoming bike holiday.
  10. Hey all, I am new to this forum. I am a 20k mile per year commuter through hell. I am on a little bike right now but my wife may be joining me for the commute. Riding a motorcycle saves me $3500 per year in bridge tolls and parking fees so double that with the wife onboard. That is not including savings in gas. The question is whether or not the Venture is the right tool. I would probably look for a newer used model. I keep my bike inside at home and at work. I ride when it's wet or dry. I split lanes when the traffic is cooperating. I haven't driven a car for 3 years unless it is taking the family somewhere. I even ride the wife's MP3 when I get home from work. What kind of mileage do you all get? What maintenance issues are there? Does it eat tires? Is it a bad choice in the rain? Is it too big to split lanes, I see Goldwings do it? So, what are your thoughts? Feel free to answer the questions I didn't think of as well. Thanks in advance, Dadsafrantic
  11. Just happened to see these pics in the thumbails at the top of the page. This is one of your countrymen that came to visit last summer. Doesn't post often but a great guy. We really enjoyed it when he and his wife visited. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/vbpicgallery.php?do=view&g=695
  12. My wife and I went to a Peace Corps Reunion in SE MN. Wonderful ride up the Iowa side of The Great River Road then split off on hiway 52. Anyway, I took some pictures at the reunion of folks and mine was the only camera that took the group shot at the end before anyone left. We had a great ride back through Central Iowa on blacktops. On the north side of Oelwein we stopped to make a phone call. I had to get a # out of my camera bag and then we took off. Just after we cleared the city limits on the south side of town, I saw this biker in a beard on an HD gaining on me fast. (I don't hurry when my wife is with me.) He pulled up beside me and frantically motioned for me to get over. I wondered how this one was going to turn out. After we'd stopped, the first thing he said was "Did you lose something?" and then it hit me. I'd laid my camera bag on the trailer at our last stop. He had seen it on the ground, looked around and saw us disappearing in the distance, stopped to pick it up then raced to catch us clear through town. He is from Independence just north of Oelwein and was out for a ride. We talked and he said that he had broke his neck after hitting loose gravel on a corner a few years ago. Wow, I thought, then he risked a broken neck again to get our camera back to us. My wife says we were visited by an angel. I agreed. Hope she doesn't want me to buy a harley now. Thanks again Harley Angel. You're a GOOD Iowa Guy. Iowa Guy
  13. I took a few guys on a ride today and the sky opened up. We made it home just in time before it rained. For the next two hours I had the nicest garage in town. The bikes are warm and dry and the people are out in the rain. The next best thing to riding is eating. I think the boss (wife in the second pic) is wondering if she can get her car in. My money is on................... no. My son woke up and looked in the garage and thought be died and went to haven.
  14. Without getting into the boring family court matters to deeply (I hope) We are waiting for the official "Amber Alert", my wife is trying to get a Judges signature as I type this. My wife Ex-Husband was told by Child Protective Services yesterday about 12 noon to stay away from the children. By 12:30 he had found my step son (Tanner) playing at a friends house and told him to get in the truck. His father has (had) joint custody of Tanner, therefore the police refused to do anything without a written order from the Judge. Bio-Dad was a member of the Dept's Search and Rescue team and is known by all of the police in his town. Fast forward to this AM... 8am, the CPS worker has been with the Prosecuting Attorney all day working on two felony charges ( before the abduction ) for taking the phone away from one of the children while he was trying to call the police and the second for stopping the children from going to the neighbors to call the police, by psychically pushing them back in the house and throwing them on the couch. My wife had to be in the Judges Chambers at 1:30 (it's now 1:35) and I am pacing with phone in hand... We believe they are headed to Nashville TN and left out this AM about 7-7:30. Could be headed to Missouri Fathers Name is Greg they are driving a white dualy extended cab pickup, unknown make as of now. Tanner is 11 years old last name of ******* as well, by now they should be in KY or southern OH if he is driving slow. The truck is an old beater and could break down, so everyone in OH keep an eye on the shoulder of the Highway. When we get the Amber Alert I will post it and it will contain more info on both T***** and G****. This is ******'s most recent school picture. Picture removed at lawyers request If you see him, DO NOT APPROACH!! G***** is a mentally deranged man and capable of anything. MAY BE ARMED!! If you spot him call the police, as well as my cell phone ART 810-877-3006

Just for kicks I went and took a look at this bike today. Runs, needs starter and tires for sure. I guess these bikes have a following too. But I'm not sure. It comes with all the factory touring package...$600.00 Marcus Hook, PA I told him I thought the luggage alone is probably worth $300.00 to somebody who has one of these. It looks like a fairly decent project for a MC guy. Could make a few bucks on it, I'm thinking. Or a nice tourer for the wife? They are kinda fast thou.
  16. Riding in the hills of southern Ohio allowing the engine of hold/reduce speed on declines, exhaust fumes drawn to passenger area. Wife wearing 3/4 helmet with face shield, which undoubtedly accumulated fumes inside shield. Riding with a Clearview XXL windshield with vent open. I noticed some intermittent exhaust fumes, but did not suspect wife would be negatively impacted. Anyone have input to determine root cause and corrective action?
  17. I posted last week that I would like some help syncing my carbs in the Knoxville area. Eck answered first offering to ride 100 miles to meet me half way. And Ken (slick97spirit) who was visiting his brother here from MO. offered to haul his equipment here and do it for me. I just want to offer a public thanks to both of you. Ken did a great job, and had them in sync in just a few minutes. It runs very smooth now, and my wife & I enjoyed meeting him and his lovely wife.
  18. To Sleepy 2 for coming out yesterday and helping me put up shelves in my wifes new pantry room, and then eating all the left over burgers, as well as Wizard765 for helping paint that trailer box that's been here all winter that someone is getting kind of anxious to put on the trailer frame. Robin came along (Wizards wife) and helped load the pantry shelves, as well as eat, Phantom wife (Sleepy2's wife) also came for supper. Evan and Anne were by for lunch and we made them happy by getting the intercom working a little less noisey. All in all, we had a great day, but sorry, only pictures of the work done, I guess everyone was a Phanthom, because we got no pictures of people, everybody was camera shy I guess.
  19. Just got home last night from a quick trip through Yellowstone, sadly in the cage. We went over the Beartooth pass, I loved it, my wife absolutely hated it. Can't wait to take the bike over it. It is now officially my new favorite road.
  20. I posted my 08 RSTD for sale in the classifieds. Wife says one has to go, 8 to many.
  21. Here are a few pics from M Day 09 I think it is safe to say a Great time was had by all. It was nice to put some faces with some names. An A BIG Thank You Don an his Wife for putting up with all of us.
  22. Great day to ride today. Rode hwy 62 west from NewAlbany, IN to St Croix. Had an early dinner at The Overlook. Great road. Used a lot of tread off the sides of the tires. The E3s held the road great. Just before we got home, Wife says to me, "Is there a knob missing here?" Ugh! The passenger push-to-talk is gone. Saw 4 or 5 RSV.
  23. Now I know this is not much to brag about considering what this bike is capable of. but for me its a big step. Considering the person on back is the most important person in my life. It is also the first time I've had a passenger since getting back on a bike in 20 years. (Big wreck). Fortunately I wasn't hurt way back then, but I still ride with those demons every now and then. Add the pressure of my wife being with me and the old demons rose up and said hello. They were imidiately quieted as soon as the front tire hit the pavement and my wife put her arms around me a spoke in my ear. She told me all was well as our children were there to protect us from harm. HAd a few nervous moments. The first stop. The first hard turn and the other first that came along. Now just to remember to raise the air pressure the next time. As all was well and comfy, but rearend bottomed out a time or 2. Put her on the center stand and put the sytem to the high level and all was well with life again. I now its not much to brag on , but I just had to anyways. thanks for lisetening, or should I say reading. David
  24. although i am never lost and never have to stop and ask where the nearest hotel is at 11pm when the wife quit talking to me an hour earlier i still started looking at gps units for the bike. i was thinking of garmin but the waterproof models are a little spendy. i wouldn,t mind getting the cheaper models but can,t find a waterproof mount for them. anybody come across any aftermarket bike mounts that could work. my wife thanks you. al
  25. Met the guy & introduced myself & my wife. Gave him a VR.org card. Maybe he'll check us out.
