  1. Just want to confirm before I start investing money in this project. I want to get Vmax gearing in my RSV and the Vmax final drives are too damned costly. Found a few FJR setups that are far more reasonable. Nice thing is they also don't have the shock stud to worry about. Can anyone confirm the FJR final drive will work? Thanks for any and all info!! Frank
  2. Been doing some research. It appears as though a vmax exhaust setup (prior to 2007) "should" fit into a venture royale, at least the headers should bolt up, since they used the venture royale engine in the vmax. It looks as though the exhaust is obviously more up swept then the venture royale 1300 exhaust. Has anybody ever attempted this feat.? They have some really nice vmax exhausts. Even if one were to buy vmax headers the number of aftermarket slip ons is way better than the venture royale's (a.k.a. NONE).
  3. While searching I saw some talk of using a 15'' Vmax rear wheel but couldn't find anybody that had actually done it on a 1st Gen. So, can this be done? Has anyone done it? And if so, what's involved?
  4. Funny thing is I sold a Vmax to get the Venture. I really thought the Vmax was rare in my neck of the woods. Seemed like I seen the same 5 bikes over and over. We have 5000 miles on the Venture now and I think we have seen 3 or 4 total. They are always going the wrong way and I am always in a hurry! Are they this rare everywhere? I guess I will just keep stalking...haha Frank
  5. Looking for soem upgradesalthough when I first got the RSTC i said i wouldnt change anything. Well I guess Im just a guy and want improvemenmts. SO who has done the vmax rear drive swap ? What is needed besides the rear. What year rear should be used and any mods have to be done? Fuel milage vs passing power . Is it peppier?
  6. I need a usable, front rotor off an MKII. Right or left per Bongo. I am putting it on rear wheel as part of my VMax wheel conversion. I have to use the VMax rear brake and mounting setup due to swing arm clearance issues. The VMax uses a 282 rear rotor, which is the same diameter as a 1st gen front. 1st gen is 1mm thicker, but it will work for what I am doing. MKII rear brake setup I have on now with the 320mm rotor isn't even close to being able to make to work due to the offset in the floating rotor design. I could make my 298mm MKI rear rotor work, but it wouldn't be an exact match either. Gary
  7. So I borrowed my Vmax back and let my buddy take the Venture for a week. It's been a few months now since I sold it. I climbed on the Vmax and it felt like a toy! Light, easy to change direction and the POWER! Haha First time I wound it thru first and hard into second it stood right up. I giggled my butt off till about 30 miles into my ride.... then the pain set in. The rearsets never seemed so extreme and the seat was like concrete. It was nice to have the wind in my face again but it was an odd experience to say the least. I guess that explains why the Venture is already gaining miles. Also explains how I managed 600 miles back home last week without being crippled. So now I need an extra 50 HP on my Venture. My Vmax dynoed at 135 HP or so I think the Venture needs to have more cause of the extra weight the Venture is wearing. Maybe after the warranty is up? Frank
  8. Based on the finding that Vmax exhaust valves are adjusted to a different setting than Venture exhaust valves I have created a separate Excel work sheet for those that use the Vmax heads. Attached below. The Venture work sheet is in the Tech library at the link below. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43410 Gary
  9. I obtained a rear brake master from a 99 VMax. Actually got it just for the reservoir. I wanted to see if I could make it work in place of the stock one, minus the level indicator. Got it and a spare starter relay for $31 shipped. So not a bad deal. This thing is in excellent shape, so it got me pondering mounting it on the scooter. Couple of issues, both solvable. The center to center distance of the mounting holes is different, stock looks to be about 52mm & VMax looks to be about 40mm. This seems like it could be fixed with an adapter plate. There is also a c/l offset difference 7 or 8mm. This offset would be beatifically as it would give room to insert the adapter plate. Now question is, should I or shouldn't I . The brakes on the rear could stand a little more grabbing power to them. I have locked the rear wheel by really stomping on them. A little more would be nice, but I don't need an extremely touchy system that will be lock up prone. The bike currently has a 88 master in it which has a bore of 17.46mm. The VMax has a 12.7mm bore, same as RSV. The decrease in bore size would give me more force on the rear pads. It would also decrease the volume of fluid pumped. The brakes have been delinked & it has a quad piston rear caliper. The setup with the VMax master would be equivalent to an RSV setup. Or, would I be better going to a 83-85 rear master, which has a bore dia. of 15.87mm. Or just leaving it be, and hope I am able to ride it this summer. Gary
  10. Sorry I havent been around for Quite a while. Been very hectic and havent had much time online but I finally Got the firebike done and hopefully will actually get some time to ride this year. Just before I went off the radar I had gotten a Vmax rear in a trade for the one in my bike. After a while I learned the Rear just didnt match my riding style and wanted to go back but being as mine had found its way to Florida I couldnt do that. Ive since bought a replacement original for the bike but the rear has high miles on it. Currently my bike has 16000 on it. Im interested in trading the Vmax rear for a low mileage (equivelent to the miles on the bike) or if someone wants to make a fair offer. There is nothing wrong with the rear it just doesnt match my riding style. Quite a few here swear by the Vmax rear. Scotty
  11. On the weekend of August 27-28 some Vmax friends(Vmoa members) and I will be meeting in Topeka for a dyno day. This is the 7th or 8th year for this gathering. Since this will be the first year with the Venture I thought I would invite anyone that would like to meet up and say hi. We usually have a few "other" bikes and almost everyone dynos. We usually take up a collection for the Dyno operator and for The Morley Family that takes care of lunch. A great group of people that I enjoy meeting up with every year. The event takes place at the Topeka HD shop. Usually we are the only ones there. Lots of noise, hanging out and tuning going on. This year there is a ride planned further south on Sat to hit up a car/bike show. Would keep anyone posted that may be interested. Frank
  12. Yesterday I drove up to John Furbur's shop outside of Allen Town PA to get a new rear with the Vmax gears. What a nice guy to deal with. He must have 50 plus bikes in his shop and gave me the royal tour. He went through the history of almost every bike. 200 + MPH crotch rockets with turbos, his Ford 5.0 V8 bike, some special Italian sports bike that at 12 years old was a head of it's time, and of course tons of Vmaxs. He also has a RSV minus the trunk all tricked out. It is lowered, has drag type handle bars and a large diameter after mart exhaust system that only the mufflers are the slip on part. I asked him who made the pipes, but now with CRS I can't rember. Then he takes me out side, opens up a trailer and says this is what I just went to CA to buy for 2K. At first I thought it was a boat. But no a custom 2 seated body made out of aluminum, a steering wheel, 2 wheels in front and one in the rear with Vmax motor in front and Vmax rear in back. He takes it out of the trailer, starts it up and then says" take it around the block I can't fit in it until I move the steering wheel". He is a very tall/big guy. I'm sorry I wish I would have brought a camera along. Hey Freebrid any chance you could email John and ask him to send you a picture of that thing so you could post it on the site? Well hopefully this weekend I'll get the new rear installed, Also a big thank You to Freebird and Sleeperhawk for their excellent write ups on removing the rear and greasing the swing arm. They came in real handy while taking the rear end of the bike apart.
  13. I increased performance on my ZX11D7 Ninja by adding a Muzzy header (4 into 1) and having a custom 1 into 2 exhaust built by a local guy. I found a Vmax 4 into 2 design that looks promising as a replacement for the Venture collector. I am wondering if Vmax exhaust pipes are bigger . . . Can one of you Vmax guys tell me the header diameter on the Vmax versus the Venture?
  14. Is there an advantage in using a rear gear assembly from and FJR vs a Vmax? What about the speedo sensor?
  15. Is the company SPORTMAX that provided VMAX parts still around? I can't seem to get to their website. This is the outfit that Freebird got his VMAX rear end from. Anyone know? Brian
  16. Does any one know what the stock head gasket thickness is? I am going to pull the heads off my motor this winter & put new valve guide seals in it. I am getting a some smoke from exhaust under acceleration. Compression is near spec. on all cylinders, so I am confident rings are OK. They measured OK when I had engine apart last winter. Heads came off a 97 VMax that was supposed to only have 17,000 miles on it. While I have the heads off, I want to increase the compression ratio on the motor. One way to do this is to mill the heads or block. The other way is to put a thinner head gasket on. Head gaskets are available in varying thicknesses. One of the VMax guys gave me the thickness for VMax gaskets, but it seems thinner than the set I put on this winter. Also going to put a Vboost on while I am in there. I am going to run it from the Ignitech TCI module. This work should put to rest that nasty rumor that Brown 1st gen's are the quickest that has been coming from someone in West Virginia. Gary
  17. I wonder if a pair of hard saddlebags and a trunk would tame the new VMax any ? Now that Yamaha has committed major resources to keeping the VMax around long term, I wonder if they might have any kind of engine "upgrade" in mind for the reliable but dated 1300 on the RSV ? How about replacing it with a slightly de-tuned 1679cc engine that sort-of resembles the one on the new VMax ? :thumbsup2:That would turn the RSV into a real sport-tourer.
  18. I just picked up an 83 venture royale.....can A vmax engine bolt in? the second gear is out and I was wondering if I picked up a good running vmax engine...would I get a bit more powerfull cruiser. I also drive a warmed over Bandit 1200, which is all customed, so I am looking to build a cool ass cruiser now for some highway rockin and rolling.........
  19. While doing the vmax rear swap I noticed my wheel hub's teeth are about 1/3 worn off. Plenty of Mk1 wheels on Flebay. Will a good hub from one of these fit a Mk2? What about Vmax or 2nd gens? Inquiring minds want to know.
  20. Who has a Vmax rear end ready with speedo fitting for a 2nd gen available?
  21. Thinking about looking for a crashed VMAX to begin a swap to my MK2. Figure having the whole bike would be better than buying pieces. Anyone done this? Were you happy? What are best year VMAX's to look for? Will stock collector just strangle this thing?

Today I had my first chance to hear a hopped up VMax ! OH MY LORD, I am in love again! That was totally awesome. I love the way that thing sounded even at idle!
  23. OK several people have been asking about the leftover parts from ythe Hannigan hack, so here';s what's gone already. Diamond R hide a hitch, gone! Rear fender, Gone! Rear rotor, gone! Saddlebags are going on Goldie mounted backwards to accomodate the Ventureline rear bumper, so gone! Rear brake, gone. Yet to find a home, chrome triple tree, rear shock, rear tire, differential (hoping to sell to a VMax owner exchange) and rear sub frame. These parts have only 8K on them. The rear shock was sold but the interested party recently totaled his scoot. If interested just PM me...
  24. Ok gang, I have a question and this is the place to get lots of opinions! I have installed Vmax cams and springs in my 1987 Venture 1300 engine. Venture intake valve lash is the same as the Vmax. However, exhaust valve lash is different; Venture: .16 - .20 mm Vmax: .26 - .30 mm Which lash will be right for my Frankenstein?
  25. Dan i have my local dealer ask me about your mod and says he has a lot of vmax owners asking about starter clutch upgrades. would it be ok to give him your contact info for these vmax owners. i didn't want to give the info until i asked you about it. And i will pm you when i get my flywheel off.
