  1. Yesterday I was at my local COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Curley, the Wonder Dog and was in the checkout line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's BUTT and a car hit us both. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Costco won't let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say. I guess why thats what makes Marcarl so appealing to us:witch_brew:
  2. Guess where I am now.... Our teacher asked us what our favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken." She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, everyone else in the class laughed. My parents told me to always be truthful and honest, and I am. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office. I told him what happened, and he laughed too. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, just like she'd asked the other children. So I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office again. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked us to tell her what famous person we admire most. I told her, "Colonel Sanders". Guess where I am now.
  3. I have what may well be a stupid question regarding the battery in our '01 Chevy Tahoe. While having our oil changed at the local quick change place they told my wife that the battery tested out as having a dead cell. We have had no signs of issues with the battery since she was told this three weeks ago. The battery turns the motor over quickly, even with the temperature in the teens lately and has shown no sign of fading. But it has me wondering... Could this be true, or are they simply trying to fool the public?
  4. Has anyone in Michigan bought a Harbor Freight Tag along trailer #66771 from the store and not online? Today I got a 25% off coupon for today only. If I order it online i have to pay an extra $89 shipping. I called the store near me and they told me that the only way to get it is to order it on line because they don't have it in the store. ps HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!
  5. Today I called and ordered a Hopnel Tank Bib, one place told me they no longer stocked them. The next place told me they are no longer making them & could no longer get any. I called another dealer, he called his outlet. None, no more coming. Same story! I guess I waited too long. I called one more dealer and they did not have any. The guy called back and said they had 3 and thats it. The will no longer will be made. Can anyone shine more lite on this. Yes, I ordered one ASAP! Aprox $60 and shipping. This just for anyone thinking about ordering from J C Whitney, they do have any nor will they get any. If you want one, call around fast. They all wanted to sell me the Yamaha one for double the $$.
  6. Off work today because of snow. We had a 2 hour delay on Monday, and got hit with another snow storm this morning. I told Ron that I have given up on my Christmas Day ride. There will be too much salt and other debris now. I told him he can get out the tool box and start tearing her apart. He has a bunch of things to do. So I figure if he starts now, it might be back together at the end of March rather than May which is what usually happens. Oh my. No leather for months. It is going to be a looooooooooooooooooong winter! Yama Mama:snow2::sleigh:
  7. Sorry to break it to everyone, but Christmas is cancelled this year....Santa died laughing when I told him a few of you had been good!
  8. The Oberlin Inn emailed Nance56 with the following information. Due to the way that they did us last year, I am NOT endorsing them in any way but felt it only fair to at least let you all know. "The Oberlin Inn contacted me and told me that they would let us have rooms for the 89.95 same as always. I told them that we were not happy with the treatment that our members received. She said that they were aware of that, but that several stayed there last year. I will leave this to you to post it if you want. She said to just tell them you are with ventureriders and you will get that rate. We do not have any type of agreement with them. She just wanted to extend the offer. I do know that this was out of her hands and she was not happy either. When you are an employee you do not always get a say in the matter."
  9. What have y'all found to be the best coolant to use for 2nd Gen? Was told, any that doesn't have silicates and phosphates. Is that correct?
  10. well went and picked up the bike tonight. they said they changed where they wired the passing light in from the red wire with white strip to the blue wire like the install paper said to do. They said ride for 150 miles bring it back so they can check the battery. We will see. I told them if this does not fix they will need to call Yamaha as this is the 3rd time it has been in the shop for Battery going dead.
  11. Can't wait to see my tire guy in Woodstock, who told me I'd never get more than 12,000 on my new Metzler's when I got them back in February. When I told him that I had over 15K on the first set, he said my records must have been wrong, or that I was just yankin his chain. Well, I just turned 18K on this set yesterday, and there is still some pretty good tread life left on them, maybe another 2,000 or 3,000 before it hits the wear indicator, especially on the front. I'll likely get new rubber again in February anyway, but these Marathon 880's have been great tires for my '99 RSV. I run about 60/40 between surface roads and highway, and on the surface roads, it's about 50/50 between country roads and mountain riding. Everyone has their own preference, but there is no denying the great mileage and performance I'm getting, now on two sets in a row.
  12. well my radio went bad the third week of April took it to the dealer they sent it off told me it would be 4 to 6 weeks so i said ok well 9 weeks later got the controler back it was good so they wanted my amp so they took it off and sent it off a little bit after the 4th of july so now its been 15 weeks. so today i called to see if they had lost my number so i got the service manager on the phone and he started to apolgize about how he didnt follow up on it and that he would call clairon right away and that it shouldnt have been this long. an hour later i get a call back from the dealer he said he just got off the phone with them and they told him that they had no idea what he was talking about so he gets the tracking info and faxes them the tracking number and who signed for it on what day and time so guess what they have lost my AMP he says he told them that that wsant good enough that his costomer (me) has been waiting for 15 weeks and wanted to know what they plan to do about it so guess what they said that they would send me a brand new one in two days so after 24 weeks i finaly get to hear music:680: again.
  13. With all of the dealer bashing on the Web, I thought I would post a positive experience. I took my 07 Venture to Dillon Bros here in Omaha to get WWW tires this past Monday. They called me yesterday and told me the rear pads were very close & asked if I wanted them changed. Of course I told them to go ahead. This frustrated me because last time I had it there, 8k miles ago, they changed the rear pads. When I went to pick the bike up last night, I had them check their records and told them about them changing the pads last time. I thought maybe I was remembering wrong and they had changed the front. So, he checked his records and yes they did change the rear pads. I told him I don't understand how they could wear so fast, as 90% of my riding in highway AND I very seldom touch the rear brake, I almost always use the front. From looking at the pads, they obviously weren't dragging. So, neither of us had any idea what happened. So, while I was paying for the bill up front, he came from the service dept, and asked if I had already paid, which I had. He then gave me basically the cost of the brake job off my next service with them. I'm guessing that he was just going to write off this brake job, but since I had just paid, it was too late. I consider this very fair and something that I didn't expect. This will keep me coming back to them. craigr
  14. Just for the record, a friend I work with had the belts come apart in his Venom over the week. He had just put the tire on his 1800 Goldwing a couple months ago before taking a trip up along the coast. The rear tire only had 4,000 miles. Avon told him that his tire was after the bad batch with the cracking problem. Don't know, but glad I got Dunlops.....

    Trip to Costco

Yesterday I was at my local COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Biscuit, the Wonder Dog and was in the checkout line when woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. 16. I met up with a buddy at the Buc-cees in Pearland, thence to ride to a Texans-Cowboys party. I was gassing up when I spied a white RSTD right behind me. I went over and introduced myself. Then I introduced myself again because he had music in his helmet and didn't hear me the first time. LOL His name was Ed. I told him that I had to say hi, since RSTDs are so rare. He didn't realize that I was also riding one until I pointed it out. RSTDs are just so rare that you can hardly believe you are seeing one! I asked if he ever had heard of VentureRiders, and he told me that he is addicted to the site. Ed even knew who I was! I suggested that he join, because then he'd be more attuned to the fellowship. We had a meet n eat yesterday, he should have come! There are so many intangible and tangible benefits of this site! His is a pretty white 2006, set up solo. Other than that, it is pretty stock. Really clean. He came over to look at Roxie, and declared her really tricked out. I don't think so, but she isn't stock. I pointed out my airhorn as one mod I did that I found important. He told me he'd been trying to figure out how to add the horn. Well, no need to struggle! Join the site and send up a flare! We're all happy to help. Honestly, Ed, you don't need to join the site. Send me a PM if you are able, and I'll come help you figure out your airhorn. And more. But you really ought to think about joining the rabble. We're like family: completely dysfunctional! Dave
  17. Warden says "Get in car and drive South!!" Leaving Fri night may stop when wheels get wet? Or anywhere in between. Great plans for this one. Go find Beach?? Budget a lot tighter for Vacation on Retirement check. I told her we could take tent. She didn't seem to like that idea?? Taking sister-in-law along. She backs the Warden up. Going to be a long trip.... I may need Meds!!!
  18. I was calling around to various dealers to see if there were any late season deals to be had. One of which was a local HD dealer. He said he would do some checking around because they have independent dealers come in and buy the traded metric bikes. Miy tour deluxe is an 08 blue/black with 9700 miles on it right now. I told him aftermarket pipes, radio, driving lights, and Bakup seat rest all go along with stock pipes. He said hed make some calls. Boy he must have speed dial, cause it was 5 minutes and he called back. after checking around (im guessing maybe one dealer, or maybe just picking a number out of the air) he said the Yamaha dealer would give him 4 grand, but hed throw in an xtra grand. I kept my temper and was civil. I told him he was way off and that it wasnt even close to book value. He told me the dealer told him that it was a dead horse. I told him that the dead horse was gonna sit in the garage and rot before id do business with him.....but i was polite.
  19. I talked to a rep at the Yamaha tent in sturgis, They had all their new yammies sitting out on display. I walked around a bit then went up and talked to a guy. He asked if i was interested in anything. I told him i was interested in the new 2011 venture. Because they didnt have one out on display. Not even a 2010. I said that I was a member on here and everybody wants to know what is coming. He basically told me "I feel your pain". He said Yamaha has a bike that sells the way it is, and that he doesnt know what they have coming down the pipe. and that he doesnt know whats coming. So I took that as another year of the same thing. He asked if i was interested in anything else. I said that if nothing changes soon I'll be interested in another brand......
  20. Last week I discovered my Avon Venom rear tire was coming apart, so on the 5th I ordered a Elite 3 from South West Moto. So today I was talking on the phone with a friend that I'm waiting for my new tire to get here, when my phone started beeping with an incoming call. It was South West Moto. They told me my tire was supposed to be shipped to me from one of their warehouses close to me but somehow got shipped to their Tucson location by mistake. Was told how sorry they were for the mistake and would overnight the tire to me at their expense so I could ride by the weekend. Within 15 minutes I got an e-mail with a tracking number and told tire was on it way. Members have posted before how fast they shipped and now I can say how good their customer service is. Plus was the best price I could find. Thanks to the members who have posted about this fine company.
  21. Man! I put that title on the thread and about a million posts about Wild Hair 39 showed up! OK, you're not in this Lowell, unless you want to come cut my hair! I told Mini that I'm willing to let someone here cut my ponytail off. But the catch is that it's gonna cost ya. The proceeds are going to help bring Aussie Annie and Quickstep over. If you are interested, this will probably happen at Asheville on Sat. night or Sun. morning or we can set up a Ga M&E or as I told Mini, I will ride up too 200 miles one way to your M&E. Just send your donation to r4774@yahoo.com and in the message box put "Hair Cut". Mini will keep up with the donations and if someone "out donates" you, you can add to your donation. I'm not sure if this will bring any money, but it's worth a try! I've been working on this tail since '04. Six years to grow it and a second to chop it off!!!
  22. I've been making saw dust in a serious manner for 30 years and have been playing at it since high school in 1958. Well I let my guard down this afternoon for just a mili-second and believe me, that's all it takes. I know exactly how I did it, it was stupid - just dumb a$$ STUPID - Fortunately, it'll just require reconstructive surgery, an out patient thing I'm told, but none the less, I'll be NOT riding the bike for a week or so - maybe longer. I just knicked the bone but obliterated the tendon - the Dr. said that can be fixed. That's a good thing, the down side is I don't know how involved it will be. BTW - I was working on furniture for a show this fall.
  23. I looked at an '87 VR with 50K miles on it today. Owner is asking $1200.00 dollars. I am tempted, but it has some "issues" that are obvious. First, it is beaten pretty badly. Plastic, vinyl, chrome, paint and metal pieces are all cracked, pitted, scraped, scarred, bent, gouged, loose, etc. They all seem to be in place, but they are pretty well abused and neglected. I kept looking though, because for the price I was more interested in the mechanical soundness of the bike than the cosmetics or looks. The owner cranked the bike and let it idle while we talked. The starter turned the engine over slowly, but it fired up quickly. The idle was rough, and it spit and sputtered for a moment after the start-up. The off-idle response was also noticebly sluggish when the throttle was twisted. I shut if off for a few minutes while the owner and I chatted about other things that needed attention. He told me the fork tubes were leaking, and would need serviced. He acknowledged they were probably empty of fluid after I easily squashed them all the way to the ground. He told me the bike had been tuned-up a year ago. Coulda fooled me. We also discussed how to remove the seat (he didn't know). I wanted to see if I could locate the source of an obviouse oil leak/seep. After a few minutes I started the bike up again, and it fired off pretty well. Twisting the throttle resulted in a sluggish (pathetic) throttle response. It gather RPM's rather slowly, and did not seem to have any umph off idle. It turned weakly while starting, but it did start. The owner later told me he had put a new battery in the bike this past spring. I have not ridden the bike yet. What things should I look for on this generation of Venture that might not be so obvious to the un-trained eye? If the owner will allow me to run it down the street I will go through the gears and see how the motor pulls and accelerates, runs at road speed, decelerates, etc. I also want to see if the thing will start, stop, hold a set speed, turn, track and other such important and interesting things. What should I expect to pay for fork seal replacement and fork service (and new Progressive springs?) for this rig? Are the brakes on the VR known to be durable/reliable? If there are carb problems on the Ventures are they a PIA to deal with? It has a oil weep somewhere on the back cylinder bank, as made visible by a considerable amount of gunk collecting on top of the rear engine case. Is this typical for a 23 year old Venture? Are the final drives on these bikes pretty durable, and do they give tell-tell signs if they are about to go out? Thanks for any input. If there other links or posts that addresses these issues, please advise. I would be glad to link to them; otherwise, I look forward to your replies.
  24. My local Yamaha dealer called Yamaha for me and got the part number for the I basket, as no one at the three previous dealers could find on the sku. 4xy-16150-09-00 and its a little over 400 smackers. While I was there i was told about a Big Air kit which includes K$N air filters and new jets. Anyone out there know of these? Thanks ron:mustache:
  25. Got my 08 V star yesterday, changing from 87 royale. Sure miss my center pegs. But I will get use to it. I am 5-9 and been told to set the handle bars back for more comfort. What is the best way risers or 2010 handle bars. Opinions will really help. Mike:think:
