  1. Having reviewed all the previous questions on this forum regarding tire sizes, and having a lot of knowledge about tires...I am willing to ask if anyone has tried a lower profile rear tire on their RSTD or Venture yet ? I currently have the newer Dunlop E 3 bias belt tires on, and they are relatively new...but...given my propensity to eating up tires, I am always looking for my next set of tires. In 2003 I went through 10 (ten) sets of tires (front and rear) in ONE year, on a 2003 GL1800. Yes, I rode that many miles in one year. I currently have my own Snap On electronic computerized wheel balancer, and a Snap On fully power tire changing machine. That means if anyone is in my area and need emergency tire work, come on down. What I want to put on the rear of my '06 RSMTD is either a set of bStones...with the rear size being a 180/70-15 (G-702), and the front being a 150/80-16 (G-703). If someone tells me that they have tried those, and they will not fit in between the swingarm and driveshaft, then I would try the Avon Venom AM42 on the rear, with a size 170/80-15, and a AM41 front, with the size being a 150/80-16. What I want to do...is put Radials on this bike. What say ye, all you experienced tire mod people??? Thanks, Miles Million Mile Rider:bighug:
  2. During Maintenance Day I changed my Clutch Spring, Friction Rings and the Steel Rings. Because of unexpected tire wear I also had to change my tire for a used one to get me back home so I never got to "really see" what the new clutch set up would do. Well I finally got a new tire installed last week and got to see just what the new clutch set up would do. All I can say is WOW. I was advised that the clutch throw would be a bit harder and to be honest that took all of about 5 or 6 times starting out to get used to that, and even then it was not as huge a difference as I expected. Where the real difference came was when I really dropped the hammer and then fast shifted in to second. I immediately found out two things. One, that yes you can get the front wheel of a second gen off the ground. Two, when you do that the passenger will say "what the was that? It whipped my head back", and find several "endearing things" to call you. Now here is the fun part. If, after explaining to the passenger that you just lifted the front wheel off the ground, and, you are lucky enough to have the right passenger, you WILL be told (not asked) to do it again If your clutch is slipping and you want to get performance out of your second gen then I would highly recommend SkyDoc_17's clutch package. You won't just get a grin put on your face. You will get one plastered on it and you will think your face will break from grinning so damn hard.
  3. I have an E3 on the front of my 2nd Gen with around 12,000 miles on it the other day the front end seemed vary unstable on uneven roads but but fine on smoother. The tire looks OK but it seems to be worn more on the left more than right my question is can this cause the bike to feel unstable? I alway keep the air pressure up in the tires and this happened out of the blue you can tell the difference more riding 2 up or pulling a trailer. Even hitting the road snakes it will act funny almost like it hops or wobbles over them. I know you can feel the trailer if that hits some uneven road or pot holes but this was almost to the point of dumping it. I'm just thinking front tire is the issue but not sure, the front forks have been checked steering head and fork oil changed at 22,000 in May I have 24,000 on it now. Just wondering what your thoughts may be or if anyone has had the same problem, Thanks
  4. If you are traveling through Eastern Arizona, you might want to tuck this info away for future reference - there is an excellent Yamaha shop in Show Low, AZ: Show Low Motorsports. I was heading back towards Texas this morning, and about 10 miles east of Show Low I blew the rear tire at 65 MPH - pretty bad, it un-beaded from the rim and the bike was virtually uncontrollable, went into a sideways 'slide' from the tire rolling off one side of the rim and it drifted into the left lane and off the side of the road before I could scrub off enough speed to get it stopped. Thankfully the oncoming traffic avoided me, and I kept it right side up! Wife was on the back, and she handled herself perfectly in the situation too - probably the only reason I kept it under control. With the tire loose from the rim, no possibility of repairing it on the side of the road. But we were wonderfully fortunate to have another rider come by who know the local area (also a Venture owner, but on one of the 'other' brands today!). Bill Poor told me about the shop in Show Low, and after we contacted them and waited a while for them to get back in touch, he decided to ride back and coordinate our rescue - a REAL class act. Hopefully we will see him on the site soon! Anyway, the shop came out and picked us up, had a tire in stock, and got us all fixed up in about 4 hours total. The final price for everything was extremely fair. I strongly recommend Show Low Motorsports! Goose
  5. Have a new Avon Venom rear mounted. Was checking the static balance after being machine balanced and before mounting. With the axle through the wheel and resting on jack stands I can see some visible run out on the outer edge of the tire where the tread meets the side wall. Bead appears seated evenly all the way around, there is small amounts of rubber flash that is between the bead and the tire. I din't remove the flash and neither did the tire installer (Avon should have actually) but the flash material is really thin and doesn't equal what I'm seeing for runout. Seems to be in one spot. Is some runout normal on a new tire? On edit: Well according to Avon here http://www.avonmoto.com/download/Tires101.pdf > 1mm lateral, radial run = out of round Thanks RSTDdog
  6. I've owned this 84 Venture Std for almost a year now, and this spring she got a new set of tires. I searched this site for recommendations on tires and found as many opinions as members. I finally decided on Dunlop D404s because they are common to similarly sized bikes and priced right. One of the tires must have had a slow leak...which started this learning exercise. A week or so after installation, the bike began to have a really pronounce wobble from the rearend at any speed over 50, and worse as you speed up. I checked and found the rear tire to be quite hot and the pressure to be ~20 psig . Pressurized up to 50 psig and rode home. I'm guessing that the hot tire and elevated pressure finally seated the tire properly, because the leak has now disappeared. That's what I was hoping for. Lesson 1: The low pressure led to a weak sidewall, which allowed the tire to wobble around...increasing the pressure stiffened the sidewall and returned the ride to normal. Not too long after that, I got comfortable with the new tires and began to push the bike a bit. I then noticed a slight wobble from the rear, while in a sweeping turn at any speed over 75 mph . I played around with the rear tire pressure and found that 50 psig was a bit more stable than my usual 40 psig in those sweepers. That sent me on a search for an explanation of tire ratings. Lesson 2: The rear D404 is rated for 761 lb @ 41 psig, while the bike weighs ~1000 lb with me on it. I should have checked the load rating prior to purchase. My opinion now is that the load rating of the D404 is too low for a bike of this size. Based on my experience and riding style, I will not be putting another set of D404s on my 1st Gen. If you ride slow and take it easy, these tires will be fine...but I like to push it a little bit more. My next set of tires will have a stiffer sidewall and higher load rating. Just thought this might help someone out there that's trying to decide on new tires for a 1st Gen.
  7. Was wondering with OEM tire size, how acurate is the 1st Gen Speedo?
  8. Wondering should I use the sidewall "maximum PSI" number for my Venom X tires? Or should I stick to the MTL (Manufacturer Tire Label) on the bike?
  9. but as hard as I have tried, I can find only one thing about it that bothers me...film at eleven This was a no-risk trial for me, as I had folks who said they would buy the tire from me if I didn't like it...so I actually have been VERY critical of the tire and deep-down believed I would find a number of things wrong with it, and end up putting the bike tire back on the Wing. I cannot feel any difference in the cornering...in fact, I seem to be leaning a bit more than with the bike tire. I like what appears to be a faster stopping with the c/t. I like the fact that the tire digs in as I make a turn from a stop...rather than the tire breaking loose that sometimes happens with the bike tire. I like the smoother ride I get with the tire. I will like the peace of mind I will have due to the increased weight capability...riding two-up...pulling a trailer I will enjoy the increase in miles that I expect to get from the car tire. Oh yeah, the one thing that bothers me...is the inability of the tire manufacturers, the Honda folks, and other riders to put the car tire down without even checking it out!
  10. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this kind of wear patern from a rear e3 , i color one of the dips in the tread, tire has around 17,000 miles on it. its more on the left side of the tire. right side shows just a little wear .
  11. It has been a while since I anounced my intention to replace my Venture's tires with the New Bridgestone Exedra Max tires. So here is the latest on that. I finally got the Exedra Max tires mounted today. I think they are a good looking tire. At least as good as a black-wall tire can be. Their profile seems a bit rounder than the old Exedra. That should improve cornering quite a bit. The tread on the rear is really deep. Tire pressure is 41 and 42. Since it was cool I put them at 40. I will see where that takes them when they warm up. Also Bridgestone rates them highly for rain and the tire groves look like they can move some water. Being in Seattle it won't take long to discover the truth in that. On to the road test. For break in, other than rocking back and forth on the straight aways, I didn't do anything special. The first thing I noticed was the loud noise from my old tires was gone. For now at least these tires are very quiet. Yea. At freeway speed handling seemed normal, good. Lane changing and maneuvering is exactly where I like it to be. Long sweeping turns were quite enjoyable. I didn't pick up on any unpleasant traits. Another yea. Now for the acid test. Off to the parking lot. Lock over u-turns and sharp cornering was exceptional. A much better feel than either the old Bridgestones or the Dunlop 404s. That's three yeas. Summary It is difficult when comparing new tires to old ones. And I would have preferred white walls. But for the initial ride these tires seemed to meet all of my expectations. Only time will tell if these early perceptions will hold up. Or if the multi compound rubber provides the additional tire life I am hoping for. But for now I think the Max is a winner. And it comes in the right sizes. Mike
  12. morning and the shop owner came out & asked me to step in the shop to look at something, rear breaks were gone, caught just in time ... so I got a new tire and breaks... still wasn't to bad $90 to have the tire mounted ( i bought the tire online), balanced , used nitrogen, new rear breaks put on....
  13. if so, what kind of tire & what was/is your thoughts?
  14. Pirelli - MT66 Route Cruiser rear tire.... I hope I didn't make a mistake.... a friend on another board highly recommended the tire...if I can get 2/3 of the wear I did out of the Elite 3 I will be happy it was $52.00 cheaper so this means I can buy the tire, have it mounted for what I would have given 4 the E3...
  15. My wife and I rode from Georgia to Johnson City, Tennessee this past weekend. I had a lot of vibration in the front end so when we got to the motel I noticed that I had lost the weight that balanced the front tire. Saturday morning I noticed a Honda, Suzuki dealer so I stopped in and asked the lady at the service desk if they could balance my front tire. She was very nice and told me to go out to the service department and speak with the manager and tell him I was traveling from Georgia he would probably help. The service manager was Brent Mitchel and he said he could put the weight on where the old one came off and I could then ride down the street to see if the tire was balanced and if not he would remove the tire and rebalance it. He said for me to wait in the showroom and he would come get me when he was finished. He came back and told me to ride down the road and see if the tire was balanced. I aske him how much I owed and he said nothing. I tired to pay something for the trouble but he refused. I didn't go back because the tire was better. It would be a better world if every business had people the care like this one does.
  16. is there a formula or calculation for determining the proper tire pressure in a trailer's tires for varying weights?
  17. Just took me about 45 minutes to hand dismount and mount car tire, pressure maybe got to 50. Took a drill with wire brush and smoothed out and cleaned rim. Got some real slimey goop from tire shop and went very easy. Now hard part getting them balanced and put back on, then ride it like it was stolen.
  18. anyone know where to get the 140/90-18 for the 1Gen.? TY
  19. Ok, I have Vemon X tires front and rear, I am a little north of 300 lb's and am wondering what tire pressure I should have front and back ? Thanks
  20. This is what my front tire looked like after coming back from Leakey. Thankfully we were able to make to home with no problem.
  21. I know a lot of you have seen the Youtube video on changing a Goldwing tire by laying the bike on it's side. I was wondering has anyone tried to do this with the RSV? If you start by taking off the saddlebags and the axle nut, couldn't this be done by laying the bike on the left side? I know there's more that has to be done, like taking off the brake caliper and stay, and the right exhaust muffler, but has anyone tried this? It looks like it would work if you're out in the boonies somewhere and don't have access to a lift.
  22. Just put a new Venom X on the front and now front end feels like I'm riding on tar snakes. It isn't any better than the old tire that was really worn, tracks to easily on any grooves in the road. Checked cold tire pressure at 38. Any ideas why it feels this way, leaving on trip in three days and not feeling real comfortable especially at slow speeds.

    Caution

Don't want to make this another tire thread,,, no need,,,, just want to report that I was riding with a friend yesterday, who rides a Wing,,, not that it matters,,,, but he had his tires changed to Avons,,,,,,,,, from????????????? Metzlers,,,,,,,, and why am I making this post??????? he was surprised that when they showed him the rear tire there was a piece missing. It was time to change the tire, but not super urgent. We do not know the date on the tire, how many miles or how long it's been on the scoot. just so you know
  24. Sunday morning I was on my way back from Key West when my wife and I stopped in Port St Lucie to eat lunch at The Cracker Barrell. All seemed well up to this point. I had been cruising along at about 70-80 mph for the better part of the morning. After we finished our lunch we got back on the bike and started pulling out of the parking lot. I noticed that the bike felt kinda squirlly, so I pulled over under a big oak tree in the back of the lot and got off to take a look at the rear tire. It was almost flat. The tire gage wouldn't even register!! I normally run about 42 psi in the rear tire. So, I get out the air compressor and get it to going. The tire pumps up to 50 psi(this is the max cold tire pressure on the side of the Avon Venom). I listen, can't hear a thing. We decide to give it a few minutes(maybe 5) and recheck. The pressure is down to 47 psi. I roll the bike back and forth looking for a nail or something but can't find anything. Hook up the compressor again and pump it up to 52 psi. We get on and go looking for a place to stay and maybe a place to get some help if needed. After stopping for gas along the interstate I check it again and the tire was still holding 54psi ( partly from heating up on the road). We take off again on the way home and stop in Daytona for the night. I check the tire again at the motel and it has 48 psi but it has also cooled down a little. I took it across the street and topped it off at 55 psi( taking into consideration that the tire is still a little warm). We go back to the motel and go to bed. This morning before we leave, I check the cold pressure and now it's at 47 psi, so after 10 hours and cooling down completely, I tell the missus "Let's go". We leave Daytona and ride from there home which is about 5 hours. When I checked again at home it has 51 psi in it. So, tomorow , off comes the tire for inspection and possible fix or replacement. The tire has less than 2500 miles of which 1440 were on this trip. Now for the question. What do you do as far as getting a tire replaced if, like this, it happens on a Sunday and all the shops are closed on Monday? Just stay in a motel until Tuesday?? A hole in a tire, I'm prepared to fix temporarily on the road. But what if the tire is beyond fixing?? I had the Venturerider list, but you know, I didn't the first time think of it!! Haven't looked to see if anyone was even near to where we were. Has anyone had any experience with the roadside assistance provided by Yamaha??
