  1. The time is drawing near for our annual St. Jude/Mean Dog Memorial ride to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tn. The date is Oct. 1, 2011. We will be meeting at the Flying J Truck Stop in W. Memphis, Ark. Time to meet there will be 11:00-11:30 am for lunch, then head over to St. Jude for 1:00 pm to tour the hospital. If you haven't been to St. Jude you are in store for a moving experience. I never tire of seeing that facility and it really brings on a range of emotion that I can't overcome. They do fantastic work there in helping these sick kids that are suffering from cancer and associated diseases. I will probably still have some Vogel shirts left along with patches and Cruisin for the Kids support bracelets, that I will gladly pass out for those who want to make a small donation. And remember we will be meeting up with the North Alabama Road Riders, who by the way have challenged us in the fundraising effort, so we can't let a small group of riders from Alabama beat us. At this time I am not ready to make known our total for St. Jude, but I will say this, we have surpassed last years total and are now headed for a new high total.....:clap2:............Looking forwad to seeing everyone there. 2. Kirby

    linux os

Ok, I know this has nothing to do with a motorcycle but here goes anyway. Do any of you use Linux or one of the variations of Linux Os on your computers? I'm putting together a system and would like to know what to expect. Is it hard to set up and maintain? I'm just tired of paying "taxes" to Microsoft all the time. I'm looking for something different. As far as my knowledge of computers, I'm not a computer nerd, but I'm also not computer illiterate. Any advice would be much appreciated.
  3. I know I'm gonna get raked over the coals for this, but I have, for good and bad reasons been a HD person. I liked the MK2 Venture for it's power and comfort, but I have a long history with HD and this will be the last one I will own. I found a REALLY clean 99 FLHP cop bike (yeah, it's WHITE) and got a good trade in for the Royale for it, so I bought it. I will at least maintain my membership here for the remainder of the time and maybe longer. What the heck the people here are great and have helped me a LOT with the Venture. Saved me a ton of money! Thanks guys! I really appreciate your help. I have skills enough to handle repairs on the Harley, ya know they ain't that complicated! I will be around for the time being though. Thanks to all of you again! Too many to mention, but as I said, a great place to belong to. Thanks. Okay, go ahead all you Harley bashers, I can take it!
  4. A while back, I had an issue with the bike not running. I was pretty sure it was the fuel pump, but turned out to be bad gas and plugged filter/line. Once again, the bike died on me less than a mile after leaving the house. This time it acted like it was hitting only 2 or 3 cyls. Check the pump, good. Checked the filter, good. Drained 1 qt of fuel from tank with reserve selected, good. My conclusion is it is either something in the tank occasionally blocking the fuel flow thru the petcock or a clogged jet. This last time it died, I could start it back up and it would run very rough. After about 5 minutes, it was like nothing was wrong. Tank and a half of fuel and a can of SeaFoam, it is running well. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
  5. I'm boing through the brake system on my "83. Since it has been setting up for a very long time, the calipers are forze solid. What is the best way to break the pistons loose without damaging them?
  6. The start of our journey through the U.S. started with MD in Ohio.....now that's what I call startin' with a "bang" We are now in Fairborn, Ohio --staying for a couple of days to let my legs rest, and AL wants to check out the USAF museum here. We then head to Kentucky. Will keep you all up to date in here from time to time.
  7. Well to make a long story short Mini has been buying me parts for the blonde sine I first left for the sandbox and I started using them this week.Got the bike running for the first time since 2008 and started with the parts installations put 2 new EBC rotors on a spare front wheel took the caliper off the 84 gotta have good brakes.and I rebuilt the starter.still have a loooong way to go before she hits the road but didnt keep me from doing a few laps in the yard today with a nekkid bike just to feel the power and true comfort of a first gen:banana::banana:. It wont be long till the wing gets sold just want to have the Blonde ready to terrorize the roads with. I will try to keep yall updated but the more I get to play with her the more I want to do to make her road worthy I forgot how much I really love the 83.And I have to make the rear brakes work that will be a first for me all the brakes on the blonde working at the same time LOL Gotta go still have a pile of parts about 3 feet high to put on her. Jeff
  8. Ok, I'm gonna start chasing people. My daughter called me a week or so ago and asked me where I was going in such a hurry. Seems she had been following "my" bike on I-80 and was trying to catch up. Didn't happen. Thing was I was in the rack at the time but but walked out to the garage just to make sure. Nope....not mine. So in the last few days I have seen a nice Blonde MKII 4 times in Council Bluffs and Omaha ALWAYS going the other way either on the Interstate or a road I couldn't do a quick turn around on. Three time solo and the other day two up westbound on "L" street. So.... Bill W., was it you? I can't remember if your's was a Blonde or not. If not, I'm gonna snag us a new member pretty soon. 1st gens are pretty thin around here and ones in nice shape are even thinner. There is one I see quite a bit and it looks like he's added more duct tape every time I see it. Pretty soon it's going to be "that gray Venture". Anybody we know? Mike
  9. I spoke with Alan yesterday and I will be getting the trailer back before they head home. I was unaware that we would be relaying it back east. Has there been any plans for this? There is no problem storing it at my house for the time being. Let me know what the plans are. Thanks, Wayde
  10. I'm new to the Ventureriders forums, but want to say thanks to all that have posted. I purchased a 2006 RSTD Midnight about a month ago with 12,000 miles on it. I bought it from a local Harley dealership, so don't know how it was maintained. All was fine until I went to work two weeks ago. The bike ran like it was running on 2 cylinders and had no power. A guy at work shamed me into paying the $12.00 to become a full member. Best money I have ever spent. Been busy at work so haven't had time to work on it until the night before last. Some post I have read said it sounded like a stuck float or a plugged jet. I tried to tap the carbs after shutting off the gas...etc. Well I thought it was time to pull the carbs and clean them. Thinking 12,000 miles on a 5 year old bike wasn't all that much and the bike may have sat for some time. I decided to grab some spark plugs, oil and filter, and a CarbTuneII ($50.00 on Ebay), brakes, and an Avon Venom rear tire. Started tearing the bike apart. pulled the seat, then the tank. When I went to pull the Airbox, I noticed the two boots that connect the airbox to the carbs were loose and had some oil on the carbs. I pulled the airbox and cleaned the oil from the boots and the carbs, replace the spark plugs, synced the carbs, change the oil, changed the brakes, and replaced the rear tire. The bike is running fantastic now. I want to get out for a ride but the rainy Ohio weather is keeping me in. Everything I did to the bike in the last two days I learned here on this forum. I have to say it would have cost me well over $12.00 to have the steelership work on it.... Just wanted to say thanks.
  11. Final packing and bike prep for our journey from GA to DC and PA for the 9/11 memorial events. So far we have 8 bikes and 11 riders. 1st stop - Harrisonburg VA for the night on Thursday, then on to Bucks County PA (Gardens of Reflection) by way of DC. Several rides and events are planned there over the weekend with the Warriors Watch Riders, along with the massive "bike night" in Lansdale PA on Saturday, which is expecting 15,000 bikes. Heading back to GA on Monday with a stop somewhere in southern VA, then home by Tuesday afternoon. Other side trips while there to include a swing up to the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst NJ, a visit to New Hope PA to see the parents of Sgt. Jennifer Hartman (killed in Iraq 11/06), and a ride with a 9/11 survivor group of bikers from north Jersey (which includes my brother, who escaped the attack on the South Tower). This will be a tremendous trip to honor and remember the heroes and victims of 9/11. While we would like to get to the ceremonies in NYC and/or Shankesville PA, there just isn't time to do it all. Working the beads tonight praying for good weather. Not looking great right now, but hopefully it will all clear out by the time we get up there. Bon voyage......
  12. When I talked myself into buying the RSTD last April one of the key points I sold myself on in trading my V-Star 950 cruiser was that any time I wanted I could pop off the quick release windshield and backrest and I'd have the style and open air feel of a cruiser. 5 months later I've got the windshield and backrest off so I can get into the details of my baby's weekly bath and wax. I'm about to put them back on when the thought occurs that I've never (NEVER) taken her out without the clip-ons attached. Hmmm. Helmet on and off we go. The difference in feel is amazing. It's like having a completely different bike hidden inside the shell of the RSTD. The open air feel, the perception of freedom, the (probably imagined) nimbleness of response, all brought back the feeling that I loved on my 950. I love the big screen on the highway, and my wife loves the backrest and armrests, but I think the plexi and the backrest may be spending more time on the shelf than they've been used to when I'm going 1-up in town... It feels like the very first time....
  13. A small group of us (10) went white water rafting on Thursday while others went riding to various places......I think we had the best time, we laughed the whole time. Next Vogel we will be going again, it was the best time I have had in a long, long time. I think the pictures speak for themselves......... Jamie and Dana rode the bull over the falls, normally only one person rides the bull, but VR members aren't normal by any stretch of the imagination.......:rotfl:
  14. This is how my day is going.... Truck went to a idle and that's it.. I was on my way to the dealer to get the A/C fixed for the 5th time.... It looks great, but I can't keep it out of the shop....
  15. Well here are the pix I took at Big Toms rally last weekend. It was a great time and we had a ball thanks again Tom, Vicky and everyone that helped make it a great time. Make me want to do my own again next summer. :thumbsup2: http://s1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff368/PhilipLepel/
  16. I have a ring problem with my 83 xvz12. Starting new thread on this. I put #2 cylinder at TDC and pressurized ( 5 to10 PSI) on that cylinder and could hear the air at the oil filler spout. Rechecked the compression on all cylinders and had 180psi on #1 , 80psi on #2, 150psi on #3 and 110psi on #4. By the time I buy new rings, gaskets, rework heads, check valve adjustment, etc.. It looks like I might be better to purchase used engine off Ebay and change out. I've spent too much time and hours on this bike to give up. The mechanic I had look at it recommended just keep riding it. It starts OK but when idleing will stumble several times and die and when under 3000RPM accelerating the engine belches several times. I've already replace plugs, wires and caps, new aftermarket TCI, replaced battery cables, repair brakes, new Deka battery, etc. Looking for some advice or really good deal on engine.
  17. I need some serious help. My boat has not run since 2000. My how time flies. Yep it has been 11 years since I’ve had my boat in the water. This is my boat story. I bought a new 20 foot 1988 Bayliner with a Chev 305 I/O. For 12 years my family were happy boaters. We skied, tubed, knee board, and fished. Got some great fishing stories? It was July summer of 2000. My family was on Alder Lake moving at about 35 mph when all of a sudden the engine quit like the emergency kill switch was pulled. The engine just died. No sputtering no back fire, no nothing, just died. I opened the hood and scratch my head. Hit the starter and it started right up. It ran great the rest of the day. At the end of the August 2000 we were again at Alder Lake. This time we anchored and the family swam and played all day. It was time to head home. Hit the starter and it would not start. No coughing, no back fire no nothing. The Engine turned over just fine, until the battery gave up. I got towed in. Got home, put the boat in the garage. The garage is heated with 2 house furnaces so I never winterized. I planned to work on the Boat that fall but never did. Oh and I did not know about Seafoam So now it is spring of 2001, May. I pulled the boat out and got it ready to start. Bingo on the 3rd hit to the started it came to life. I let it warm up to operating temperature. I shut it off and put it back into the garage. Taking the Boat to Lake Tapps I like always start the boat at home and get it all warmed up. I do this so I get my boat out away from the docks ASAPly. So other boater can waist everyone else’s time trying to get their engine started creating a dock jam. I’m on a plane moving at about 25 mph and loving it. But it wasn’t a minute later when I felt the oh so slightest of a partial engine miss.. It was so slight that only I noticed it. Then another miss, and then another and another. The miss became very noticeable to all. The missing got so bad that the boat could not be kept on a plane. I idled in gear back to the dock. Got the boat home and left it outside to work on a few days later. I’m back at the boat again now. I start the engine and it springs to life. I let it get to operating temperature Only this time I let the engine cont to run. Soon I felt that oh so slight of a miss. Soon the engine missed more. I gave it more throttle. The engine did pick up speed. But soon the engine revs began to surge. The revs slowed down then sped up on its own. Slowed down then speed up . This surging was on its on accord. After I last gave it more throttle I did not touch the throttle until it finally died. The surging was so definite. But when at the lowest rev of surging on last time the engine quit. At that point I could not get the engine started the rest of the summer I tried carb cleaner and that did not work. Well life goes on and soon it was fall and back the boat went into the garage. Next Spring I pulled the boat out again. Started right up. Then the missing reoccurred. The surging reoccurred. Once the engine died after the initial start of the year. I could not get the engine to start again. What it did do as the starter cranked. The engine acted like it waanted to start but just couldn't.. For it kinda of wanted to start but just could not get enough life to maintain on its own. I decided that I would rather put in new parts than to pay a shop to trouble shoot it.. So I did the following. 1) New spark plugs 2) New plug wires 3) New Points and Condenser 4) New rotor can cap 5) New coil 6) New internal carb filter 7) New fuel water separator 8) New Fuel pump 9) New rebuilt carb- 10) New fuel Still no luck I got so frustrated that I purchased a couple of used jet skis. That was a mistake for the boat, for now I have fewer reasons in getting the boat fixed. Soon the boat sat a couple of years in the garage. One year I took it to my auto mechanic. I told him this same story. He said lets convert it from points and condenser to electronic ignition. He did that and got it started but the missing and surging soon reappeared until it stop running, then he too could not get it started. He networked with his online auto mechanic but with no luck. He went through the entire fuel system and electrical and still no luck. Most recently he wants to pull the heads to see what might be going on there. Well he started to get behind on some of his other auto customers. So I took my boat back waiting for a better time for him. He did not charge me anything for he said that he did not fix it. So this is where I’m at. So are there any takers here in helping me resolve my Boat’s Chev 305 engine issue. If so before providing suggestions are there any questions that I can answer. .
  18. As some of you know, I haven't posted as much over the last few weeks as I normally do. There is just way too much going on right now and it just seems that there are not enough hours in the day. Hopefully things will get back to normal in the near future but until then, I apologize that I'm not doing more here. As those of you who attended the Cody rally know, Eileen and I ended up cancelling the trip. We were really looking forward to it because due to my own illness over the past 3 years and other family illnesses before then, we have not done a decent bike ride in several years. I sometimes feel that we should just give up and sell the bike. I'm NOT going to do that though and will just hope that next year is finally back to normal. Whatever normal is now. Some of you know that Eileen lost her mother and her sister to cancer over the past 5 years. She took care of both of them during their illness and in fact we had built the little guest house so that her sister could live out here beside us and Eileen could take care of her and spend time with her while allowing Connie to retain some of her independence. It was a very difficult time for Eileen but she did well and it was something that she had to do. Almost immediately after Connie passed away, we found that Eileen's mother also had cancer. It wasn't as emotionally draining but still bad and then she passed away about a year later. Then of course I had my own ordeal wth the nasty disease that the intitial treatments and then complications last summer pretty much took away two more years of any real riding. We though that this summer would be ours again. It was not to be though. We find out a while back that Eileen's sister in law, her brothers wife that lives in Dallas, has cancer. This is the only adult member left in Eileen's family and Dolores is more like a sister than a sister-in-law to her. She has spent the past months going through all the usual treatments and then various clinical trials but basically, nothing worked. Eileen ended up going to Dallas during the time that we were scheduled to be in Cody so we had to cancel that trip. Then we had planned to go to Vogel or Big Tom's WNY rally this weekend but that's not happening either. Dolores has made a turn for the worse and they have basically given up on any treatments. She was in the hospital last week while they tried to stabilize her and basically just make her more comfortable. She is back home now and it is just a matter of time. Probably only a few days. It's really sad because this lady is only about 48 years old and has always been very health conscious. So, Eileen is flying to Dallas again tomorrow in order to be there to help her as much as she can and basically just spend a few final days with her. It is going to be a very difficult time for Eileen as well as her brother in Dallas and their two sons. The sons are older now, 19 and 22 I think but still taking it very hard. There is nothing that anybody can do but I simply ask that you keep Eileen in your thoughts and prayers and that Dolores will find some comfort and peace in her final days. Again, I apologize that we have been MIA from all the regular events this summer but hopefully things will be better next year.
  19. Ok, I'm wondering....... I used the NKG DPR8EA plugs for a couple years and wasn't happy with the life span. I changed to the NKG DP8EA plugs a year or so ago. Not much difference in how long they last. I run them at .035 gap and they are consistant with a nice tan burn on all of them. No fouling and gaps are barely off spec. I can clean and regap them and not get a lot of improvement. It's the same story every time. The bike starts and runs great for about 4,500 to 5,000 miles and all of a sudden it gets picky about starting. I mean real picky. Down right bitter about starting. It will always start, but it's a stand off for a while. A quick change of plugs and she's back to touch of the button. Same way every time. I expect more life from a plug than that but I can not find a reason for the the plugs failing at such a regular schedule. None of the obvious stuff anyway. Caps and wires were new two years ago and still test like new. No corrosion, no resistance issues. The battery isn't the problem either. It's full charge and as soon I change the plugs she's like new again. Any suggestions? Mike
  20. We had a great time, no bike accidents that we know of. Great seeing the familiar faces and several new ones. Quiet a few of us stayed at the Season's Inn, the owners were very nice and biker friendly. They had fresh bike towels every morning, allowed us to party outside with no complaints, but we did pack it up by 10pm. Taz, your apple cider was a great hit. Slept like a baby. Honey Bee (used to be Warrior), well what can we say, between the bees knocking you down and Honey Buns chasing you, we're just worried you may not make it home in one piece. Ken, thanks for letting me test ride your bike with that Vmax rear end, when I get the money I will be switching, dang what a difference in the ride. Pete and Joel, great meeting both you. Joel can teach all of us how to keep that 2ng upright scraping pegs, not to sure Mechanic wants to lean like that though. Pete, sure did like the way your Vision lit up at night. Sling, Peggy, Konnie, Eck, Riderduke, TC it was great being with all of you again. You all Ride Safe Mechanic will have pics up by tomorrow. P.S. No, I did NOT leave the Mechanic at a gas station this time.
  21. http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/the-projector/ghost-rider-spirit-vengeance-either-going-stupid-awesome-210013120.html Looks like sporting a Vmax this time.
  22. So, preparing for a nice 90 minute ride to camp, checked the air pressure on the front and after removing the tire gauge, whoosh! All the air came rushing out. Much to my dismay, the whole stem came out too. Guess it's time to replace the whole valve stem with something other than rubber? Glad this happened in the garage though and not on the road.
  23. We will be in the Dandridge area Aug. 22th through the 26th, we will be staying in a cabin at Big Ridge State Park... we will be availabe for Dinner or IceCream the 24th,25th if any one wants to meet up. We will be caging it as we are under a strick time line getting there. I will try and post more as time gets closer, Hope to meet up with some of ya`ll.. Kreg
  24. I for one would really like to Thank Gary for all the work he has put into getting these Ingitech units for us. I know he has invested a LOT of time and work into this. I couldn't do it. Without him we would be stuck with those old crusty units that worked sometimes and sometimes didn't. Really a major embarassment if it happened about the time you started to put that Hardley in its place!! MUCH THANKS GARY!!! Err you are going to make mine run just a little better than.......you know:whistling:
  25. I was looking at pic from Cody and when I saw this one, it occured to me that Jack was way past having a good time.....
