  1. This will be the "final" official countdown thread. I have asked the moderator's to "close off" the other 3 or 4 threads regarding the Cody Trailer Grand Prize Raffle for 2011. Those threads will not be deleted - just closed to additional input - so everyone is on the same page. Thanks, everyone, and good luck. As of 5/31/11 - 9AM PST, there are now 33 tickets left.
  2. Rear wheel removal Gen 1 I need new tires for my bike. After reading many threads today on the different procedures, I came up with a process that I thought would work well for me. Basically I pulled the axle on the rear wheel, used a floor jack and removed the front wheel then finished removing the rear wheel. Everything went according to plan. I think one of the best threads that I read told me to strap the center stand. Great idea! Thanks to everyone that posts!! Ray http://www.raymondstacy.com/nowheels.jpg
  3. Okay I have a request or 3. 1st and foremost for me. When I do a search or when I post a new topic it gives me a list of threads that have had similar parameters. I love this feature, it is very helpful ..... but..... it only allows me to view one of the listed threads. When I try to go back after reading the thread to view the other threads they are no longer there. Is there a way to make them stay at the bottom of the page so we can peruse all of them before we post? 2nd I see where it was mentioned before but is there a way to make a sticky type date for when each post was made, a time date stamp on each individual post? 3rd. My Valkyrie thread under our user names shows how many threads we have posted or replied to... is there a way to do that too. It is kinda nice to see who has posted . Thanks this is a GREAT SITE you have done a AWESOME job with it and deserve a huge pat on the back...
  4. RK pipes I got for $75, and the 1 3/4" 20 degree bend pipe. I'm not too happy about the bend, but it shouldn't affect the performance much. http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/BriRit/2011-03-23_17-34-48_914.jpg Hanging the pipes from the bag hangers. I had to drill out the threads to accept the larger bolt that threads into the pipe hanger. http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/BriRit/2011-03-23_18-16-48_484.jpg I used some rubber grommets with a spacer inside to drop the pipes so they don't hit the bottom of the bags, and to isolate the vibration. http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/BriRit/2011-03-24_17-52-12_618.jpg http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/BriRit/2011-03-24_17-58-10_692.jpg Here's what they look like from the side. I'm still working out the connector pipe dimensions, I may have to put more of a bend in it, and get the ID of the collector side expanded a bit. http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/BriRit/2011-03-24_19-03-12_936.jpg
  5. Ive searched and haven't found any thread about disassembling the forks and replacing the seals and springs. Ive found plenty of threads about how great new springs are, but no step by step procedures.
  6. When initially viewing "Active Threads From The Forums" there are 15 threads showing. In order to view the remaining 5 on the first page I have to click on "MORE". After getting a full 20 items on the first page, all of the following pages have all 20 items on them right away. I am curious about why all 20 items are not viewable right away when looking at the first page. Not a huge inconvenience, just curious. I'll bet someone has a very logical explanation. Probably the "boss".
  7. Quick question, I used to ride a BMW RT1200P and was spoiled by the adjustable brake/clutch levers. Im 6'00 and can reach the brake lever on my 04 BUT...does anyone know of a lever that reduces the reach a little bit. I've looked through the threads and only saw new levers mentioned based on appearance (chrome or flat blade). Thanks for any help. Clint:Venture:
  8. This bunch sure likes to count! Countdown to Muffinman coming home ---14* Countdown to PIP-----------------------24* Countdown to 10,000 members-----------35* It must have been all those hours with Sesame St. That's 3! 3 counting threads! Ha Ha Ha (accompanied by lightning and thunder) *These figures were obtained thru the latest post in each of those related threads and the originator of this post makes no claims on the accuracy of the said figures
  9. Need new tires on my 07 midnight venture want to go with the Dunlop E3's or the Avon Venom. I know there are other threads but I was wondering if anyone has boughten tires lately and where's the best deal. When looking at other threads I don't think I could go wrong with either but whats your opinion. Also is there anyone near me, Appleton WI, that might have a tire changer that would be willing to give me a hand changing the tires as well as any other things that should be done while I have the tires off (I was really bummed that I wasn't able to make the maintanance day in WI this last weekend). One other thing are the tires we buy off the internet first quality tire my local dealer told me that places like Motorcyle super store and Denis Kirk are all selling second, tires with flaws, which I don't personally believe. I think that was his way to justify his price over $600 and that was for the standard oem replacements. Has anyone else ever heard of this UPDATE: Tell me what you think of this I went to a local shop that sells dunlop e3"s got a price of $325 installed I asked the about lubing the splines when they had the back tire off and they said it was unnessasary and all it does in make a mess and that they actually wipe off anmy lube on the spline if there is any. So what gives I've seen tech articles on this site on how to lube this spline so it makes me wonder if i should even consider this dealer what do you think Thanks Jeff
  10. after all the other tire threads but... I keep reading that Avons are great but you get some bounce or wobble or some other adverse affect around 85MPH and up. True or Not? I have Commanders now and they have been great (smooth as glass up to 100). Needing to replace the front at 18,500. my last rear went 12k. You guys are spooking me off of Avons with this wobble talk - I routinely hit 85 and frequently above it - and I like everything to stay nice and steady. (Sorry to start this again, I went back and dug through the other threads and cant really find much definitive)
  11. Does anyone know where these are available to buy? I can't seem to find them anymore. I just sent an email to Rick at Buckeye Performance since some old threads mention him but they aren't listed on his site.
  12. I noticed that the dates on the merchandise threads are 2006, Is the merchandise listed in the threads still available? I would have asked in the specific Merchandise threads , but Im not allowed to post in them.
  13. Well here is a cautionary tale about whom you entrust your bike to do 'work' on it.. Make sure they know what they are doing, and that if it's an indy shop, at least have a frikken book and qualified techs. I just had my front tire replaced by a local shop who called me to inform me that there is something wrong with my front axle.. Ut oh.. They said they had a beast of a time turning the axle out after removing the pinch bolt and when it finally let loose, it was bone dry and in horrific shape. Worse on that, the threads show signs of 'firing' which I believe means steel on aluminum friction heat did some damage in there somewhere. He found melted or ground metal in the threads etc. Good news is that after cleaning out the threads, he's found them to be in good enough shape to be 'serviceable' both on the axle and fork end. Bad news is that it's highly recommended getting a new axle and a helicoil insert on the fork to 100% make sure all is good. When questioned if at all possible that it was just a hell of a lot of highway riding that might have taken all the grease off the axle or heavy rains etc contributing to the situation, he shook his head and said, no.. whom ever installed this did not do it properly. If it was my shop, I'd be responsible for repairing your bike.. of course he knows it wasn't his shop who did that last tire change so it was a nice statement all the same, I'd hold him to it.. However, I DO know which shop did it and man.. VERY disappointed with them since they had always done my tires. I'll purchase from them again but never have their monkeys touch the bike again.. wow.. how scary is that! And this after a 7500 mile road trip through the USA.. now to hunt for a new axle and then get this fixed up properly. (recommendations?) Goose gave me some keen pointers about tire installations, and what to "demand" when having a shop do your tires.. of which this shop actually do every time.. he saw the junk the other shop left behind, the same shop that nearly killed my front axle. Shame, they 'were' highly reputable.. until now. Word of caution, ensure the indy shops you deal with know of what they talk about.. Hence why I carry a DVD with the shop manuals on it with me when I travel.. just in case.
  14. I know I'll be spat upon for this but I think it needs to be said just to bring things into proper perspective. Occasionally, there are threads about the idiotic cagers colliding with a bike. Usually it's deemed the cages fault because they are in a cage and not on a bike, however, in other threads, it's mentioned how fast one can go on a bike either on the straight away or tackling some twisties. This causes me to wonder if there is shared responsibility or if it always the cages fault when we as operators act like we're running the Datona 500 on bikes on public highways and subjecting ourselves to unsuspecting cagers. Ok - fire away --
  15. It's beautiful since we don't get much snow around the Raleigh, NC area but it sure cuts into riding. It's been cold around here but I've been on a number of Patriot Guary missions; you can't go in this stuff. I guess you guys up north laugh at us down here but what can I say. Spring is just around the corner. Hope everyone is safe and warm; I don't send many threads but I don't have a lot to do right now. I did get my stebel air horn in but am waiting on the bracket to install. Can't wait to blow out the windows in the garage.
  16. Well, actually a WOLO bad boy. had to do this the easy way of course:bang head: , I mounted the horn on the top bolt for the airdam, which entailed removing the spacer and replacing it with two nuts to do the final clamping of the horn to the airdam and the engine guard to the support bracket. It didn't help that I first wanted to stick the bolt through from the other side so that I could just tighten it up, the frame pervents that, but I had already drilled out the threads so I needed to add a nut on the inside as well. Now if I just don't have to remove the airdam too often. I do like the location! next will be a new fuse panel (I think).
  17. Just to give everyone a heads up. As the year is quickly winding down, I will be starting to do some site clean up and deleting a lot of threads that have past their shelf life. Will be leaving the threads that pertain to maintenance issues or good buy sites. But, if you see some of your threads gone, it is simply because of an effort to free up space on the server. Hope everyone had a great Christmas or festive season and wishing one and all a great new year. Russell
  18. One of my winter projects is to add additional lighting to the back of my new-to-me 97 RSTD. I've read the many threads here on that subject, but was thinking the best method is to spread them out for maximum impact. There are many threads here on how people have added additional running/brake lights to their hard bags, but I was curios if anyone has added additional running/brake lights to the back of their leather bags? I'd be interested in what you used, and of course, pics! Thanks!
  19. I have gotten to the point that the first thing I do when pulling up a thread is to look at the original date. There have been several that are one to two years old that it appears the poster that brought it up, ran across it in a search and took off again, without realizing the date. This is fine as we have a lot of great threads, but if I find an old post pertinant, I will start a new thread and refer back to the old post. I think this keeps down some of the confusion, even though for some, I think confusion is a big part of their life. RandyA
  20. When I come to this site and read a few threads, then leave and come back later, and click on new posts, threads that I didn't look at the last time are being marked as read. (no longer in bold print) Is there some way I can set up my account so this won't happen? Thanks.
  21. As ya'll know I did the "gauge conversion" last spring. After a summer of driving, I found recently that the "main fitting" (that M20-1.50 oil drain plug that replaces the stock plug in the side of the engine that we tap into) was leaking oil. I had used a nylon washer. When I removed it, I found that the threads were quite chewed up ... not stripped but more like "flattened". Like the sharp edge of the thread had been filed down. Any ideas about this? Are these threads not exactly the same as the plug that comes out of that hole? I'm concerned about re-using it now. There seems to still be sufficient thread depth to hold it in but .... to me, it should look normal after unscrewing it. Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions? I wonder if wherever I got the oil plug from that they gave me a wrong one...or is that even possible. What is better than a nylon washer? I'm thinking the washer somehow shrunk from compaction and heat to cause the leak because it was fine for most of the summer. I just noticed this recently after parking the bike for the winter.
  22. It's time for us to have another chat here. Freebird not 2 weeks ago came on and mentioned about threads going south. Today I have closed 2 threads down due to folks coming on and taking them south. There are a couple of rules here, and for the most part, the greater majority of the membership have no problems following them. Political post are never good, they always go south as all of us have strong beliefs, I do too, way heavy (on the edge of being radical) than most of you know, but I dont express them here. We hear of tragedies and that sparks emotions in us, we then say our peace, usually before we take a chance to calm down and think about the consequesnces. It's understandable, but we are grown men and women, many over 40. Some like to fuel the fires and stir the pot, this is not acceptable. THINK before you post up something that MAY be misconstrewed. I know that most start out innocently as information, but they spiral quickley out of control and create hard feelings and get dander up. I am not here to preach to any of you, I am no better than anyone else on this site, but I will come on and give some of us a jerk and let folks know that the moderators wont tolerate this. For some reason this summer seems to be one of the worst for these kinds of threads that are usually kept for winter time when many of us can't ride. PLEASE think about what you post and the reprocussions that can happen by passing on info that stirs up emotions. Lets keep this in mind when we post and we wont have to seem heavy handed by closing or deleting threads. Thank you to all the members that contribute to this site. This place is enjoyable to come to because we try very hard to keep it light and enjoyable. I can speak for myself and the moderators in saying that you folks are very easy to work with. We dont have a lot of issues with the members....so THANK YOU
  23. I guess it's time for a reminder folks. I'm amazed at the number of political threads started lately and also some of the jokes that are crossing the line of our PG rating here. I'm not going to give a big speech here. There are plenty of threads where I have done so. I'm just going to ask that you PLEASE think about what you are posting before you post it. It's really simple. No political discussion here and the jokes should be no worse than PG rated. Thanks, Don
  24. This could be a problem on any bike and I need some advice on it. We found the head bolt loose on a Yamaha Radian. I think that's the name. The threads were all on the bolt. Of course the bolt goes through the cylinders and is close to the middle of a 4 cylinder inline engine. Is there a way to repair it? We havn't had the bike apart and it doesn't appear that the head has been off. I've had several ideas but need some input. We really didn't want to take the engine apart. Is there a way to rethread it or maybe a stud that is self tapping with a larger set of threads. I had some head bolts that pulled out of a VW engine years ago and I found a replacement that you could put in that cut it's own threads.. That worked great long ago. Any ideas?
