  1. Hey gang, I've got the plastic off from working on the carbs and thought I'd lube the cables and check my cruise control that doesn't want to engage. Electronics seem to work but the cruise won't engage. I've opened up the cable cover where the pulleys are and noticed quite a bit of slack. See attached. Is that normal? Also, another problem I introduced is the spring fell out. What is the proper orientation of the spring. Any pics available?
  2. Would someone take a look their first gen center stand and let me know if the spring is compressed or extended while the scooter is on the center stand. I just got the parts in to put the lever arm and spring on so I can use the center stand but not sure which way it goes. The way I think it supposed to go gives me the suspiscion my spring is too long. Thank you, Bob
  3. hi guys, after the problems I've had with my clutch (twice this year I burnt it out during Advanced Rider courses), I've decided to go back to stock configuration and dropping the PCW mod I had in it since last year. I have a Barnett Spring kit in it now, but with still the full disc stack up as per the PCW mod only because I could not find my original half discs. So I ordered new ones.. But I can't seem to figure out how this goes back together. Once I pull off each plate (friction and steel) its the set up for the half plates I'm not seeing properly in the diagrams for some reason.. I believe I have all the correct parts now.. and some spares.. I have these parts 26H-1632101 (half size friction plate) 26H-16384-00 (small steel disc) 1Fk-16383-00 (small steel spring plate..) and the small spring clip, 26h-16385-00 From what I can see in the parts diagram, the flat plate goes in first then the spring plate, the friction plate fits OVER these (as it is larger in circumference) and the plates get held in by the spring clip. But which way does the spring plate go in? does the larger edge go against the back of the basket or towards the front? I'm not sure on this one or if it makes a difference.. Luckily, i ended up with three extra clutch cover gaskets =) Thanks in advance! ADDENDUM: Oops, MY BAD, it actually says on the spring plate OUT SIDE, to show which side of the plate should face the clutch cover.. silly me.. Cheers
  4. Hey Everyone, I will be traveling to Don's Maint. Day by car this year due to my recent back surgery, and I will have replacement Clutch Diaphragm Springs for anyone that purchased a Clutch Spring Upgrade Kit over the past few months. I will also have complete kits with the new spring for First and Second Gen. bikes as well as a Clutch Spring Upgrade Kit for the MKI VR, which uses a set of 6 compression springs instead of one Diaphragm Spring. Because of my present physical condition, I WILL NOT BE WORKING ON MOTORCYCLES! But I will have many of the Items I have listed in the Classifieds with me for sale. I will mail a new spring to anyone that I miss at Maint. Day or anyone that doesn't attend. Thanks for your patience and understanding, it will be a pleasure to see everyone at Maint. Day again this year. Also, thanks for the kind words and prayers from everyone while I was down, and most of all, thanks to the people that helped Jean while I was down, she was very grateful, as was I. Earl and Jean
  5. That wouldnt be a bad idea at all ,,,what do you think about that...OH yes there would be a spring one also
  6. There was another thread but not sure where it is about the clutch upgrade. The one where you add the full disc and remove some other parts. I actually done that a couple of years ago and was never really happy with it. I didn't like the clutch engagement point or even the way it acted. A month or so the thing started slipping again. 75K miles on the bike. I was checking all my options, barrnet spring etc. What I ended up doing was ordering all new parts from Yamaha. Clutch is real solid, engagement point is where it should be and I'm happy again. Kind of reinforces what I have thought all along, original parts and sizing always seem to work best. BOO
  7. :dancefool:Sorry guys i know there are a ton of threads on this but man fishing through them all you end up more confused lol. Ok so i have about 78000 miles on the ol girl and the clutch has been slipping since oh about 15000 miles ago. I won a new Barnett clutch plate set and have never put them in. Should i use these or just try to replace the spring with heavier duty spring? If i use these do i need anything else along with it? Never done a clutch before but i know it is not that hard i just want to make sure i have everything to do it the day i tear it down as i hate to be with out it. New baby due next month so have to make sure i have the bike for my sanity. Thanks for the help.
  8. I got one of those Skydoc clutch upgrade kits and thought since I was going into the clutch I would see if I could get the dealer to get me a new "I" basket to try to quieten the Jensen mobile chirp down some and do it all at once. I have a new I basket and convinced the dealer to let me install it (cause I do not want some Jack Ass messing around with my bike). Now I have to get the old clutch basket back to him pretty soon. Poor Skydoc is having a rough time with the clutch springs he got for all of us and I know now he probably wishes he would have not got his self into all that... I know he is doing all he can. I know I could probably use my original and the .60 spring but...I have already sent my .60 spring back to him for replacement when the replacements arrive. I was wondering if I could do the Skydoc clutch upgrade (pull the 1/2 disc out and replace with the full disc...trash the extra parts etc.) except use my original spring...and install the I basket so I can get it back to the dealer. I do not have any slippage so far on my clutch, only 17000 miles on the bike. I just wanted to make sure I do not have any slipping in the future. When Skydoc gets the new springs in...all I have to do is pop the new spring on to complete the upgrade. Help me out here...the dealer called again today wanting the old clutch basket back...so I need to move pretty quickly on this. If I have to swap out the I basket and put all the original parts in...that is ok...just trying to optimize my work on this clutch. Also planning some big trips here soon...so I do not want this clutch to go south on me while on the road. No risk taking here. Please I need some advice here...
  9. After reading the Clutch Upgrade in the tech section, I have a few questions. Bike is 2007 RSV with 29,000 miles 1. If left stock, how many friction plates? I gather the upgrade is 6? 2. Is the "wire" something that has a part number and comes from the stealer? 3. Can a heaveier spring be put in with out the entire upgrade and would that even be worth it? 4. What is the cost of the keeping stock parts vs. the upgrade? Thanks guys.
  10. Anyone know if the clutch spring kit for 2nd Gen are still available from Earl? If not what's the next best option?
  11. Got my new progressive springs today, so tore into the job. One side is done, the other....A &$@# PO must have done something at one point, the Fork Spring Cap is completely rounded out.....Anybody got a trick of the trade on how to get this B*#@* out? Greatly appreciated.
  12. I just received word that the vendor will accept the old, defective clutch diaphragm springs back for a credit and will replace every spring with a new one! If you have purchased a Clutch Diaphragm Spring Kit from me and received it, PLEASE send the Spring ONLY, back to me! My address is: Earl Harrell 115 Colony Court Duncansville, Pa. 16635 I will be shipping the defective springs back to the vendor and will receive a new, proper thickness spring for every one I turn in. I will be shipping these springs on Friday April 30, 2010 so if you get your clutch spring to me by that time, you will be in the first group to receive your new, proper thickness replacement spring. Not to worry, if you miss the first shipping, I will be sending a second batch for replacement and there would be a slight delay in receiving your replacement clutch spring. PLEASE remove the clutch diaphragm spring from the plastic package and ONLY send the spring in a mailer envelope. ( a 6X6" bubble wrap mailer will be fine) Thank you one and all for bearing with me thru this, I will repost the Ads for the First Gen, and Second Gen. Clutch Spring Upgrade Kits as soon as the proper springs start to arrive. For those of you that have ordered the kit and not received it, Your kit will be shipped with the first batch of the correct springs! Thanks again for your patience, Earl
  13. Hey All, I have been in contact with EBC and they have admitted that they have shipped me Sub-Standard Diaphragm Clutch Springs that I used in my Clutch Spring Upgrade Kits. It seems we ordered so many springs in such a short time that the were forced to activate a second supplier, and that supplier used the wrong thickness of material for the Diaphragm Clutch Spring. EBC is going to replace EVERY defective Spring. Here are the two options I can offer you at this point: Option one is to Double up you old Clutch Diaphragm Spring and the new one that came with the kit and this will solve the clutch slippage problem once and for all. If this makes the "pull" on the clutch lever too heavy for you to handle, I understand that completely! I would suggest you use option two. Option two would be for you to mail the Clutch Diaphragm Spring ONLY, (remove it from the plastic package and put it in a mailer envelope) back to me, here is my address: Earl Harrell 115 Colony Court Duncansville, Pa. 16635 Here is the "rub" with option two, EVERY Diaphragm Spring that EBC has in stock right now is Sub-Standard, Which means that they will need to make another production run of NEW springs with the proper thickness of material. This is not going to happen overnight! So if your bike is down, you may want to double up on the spring for now, and when the new, correct springs start to arrive, I will post again, and you can swap out the doubled spring for the new, proper thickness spring. Any one that has paid and not received a kit will receive their kit with the new, proper thickness Clutch Diaphragm Spring as soon as the new springs arrive. I am very sorry for this problem, I don't make these springs myself and while I verified the part number for all of the springs I shipped, I didn't measure EVERY spring I sold. I can assure you, I will be measuring EVERY ONE from now on! When the Quality level of the Diaphragm Springs has returned, I will repost the Ads in the Classifieds for the MKII VR and Second Gen. RSV and RSTD kits again. The MKI kit uses a set of 6 compression springs instead of a single Diaphragm spring and there is nothing wrong with the MKI kit. Thanks for your patience, and Again, I apologize for this hassle. Earl
  14. Snow, freezing rain turning into ice pellets it's -3C and more to come ...My spring riding is over
  15. From the sales rep with the works shocks with respect to what is available for the RSV: "XVZ13 Royal Star Venture 99up Unit Rear 10.00 OAL (stock length) Durasport Series w/single rate spring and threaded pre-load @ [Price omitted by me for sake of discussion]. Ultrasport series w/single rate spring, 16 position adjustable rebound damping and threaded pre-load @ [Price omitted by me for sake of discussion] . ...." So, my question is for those of you that either: 1) have the works shock and would like to give me your thoughts on which one you chose and why you picked the way you did 2) Know a little something about these things and have an opinion on which one would be better and why. The "WHY" here is really what I am interested in since this will help me make an informed decision about which one to go with. Thanks for you time folks!!
  16. To EVERYONE that Just Received A Second Gen. Clutch Spring Upgrade Kit! It has been brought to my attention that the Clutch Diaphragm Spring in the Second Gen. Clutch Spring Upgrade Kit is thinner and produces less clutch gripping pressure that the stock spring. Because this Diaphragm comes in a sealed package, I did not think to open one up until I was notified. IT IS IN FACT THINNER THAT THE STOCK SPRING, and is not the spring that has been shipped in earlier batches of the kit. I received 29 of these springs and suspect that the last batch has been packaged incorrectly. If you have not installed the upgrade kit yet, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL THIS KIT UNLESS YOU CAN MEASURE THE THICKNESS WHICH SHOULD BE .070". If the spring is measuring .055 to .060" thick DO NOT INSTALL THIS KIT. Because it is the weekend, I can't get in touch with the vendor who supplied this part but you better believe that come Monday morning I will be bending his ear about this issue. For any one that has done the install already, I will furnish a replacement spring and new clutch cover gasket with shipping at my cost for your trouble. In the future I will open and measure EVERY spring that I receive before it is shipped. I apologize for this problem and will do all I can to take care of it as soon as possible. Another short term "fix" is to Double your old and the new Clutch Diaphragm Spring until I can get more springs that are the correct thickness. I have REMOVED the Ads from the classifieds until this issue is resolved and like I said earlier in this post I will measure every spring before I ship it from now on. Again, I apologize, Earl
  17. I wanted to share this with you DIY guys out there. I bought this valve spring tool at a local tool discount store. It is too large for removing my VR valve keepers and I had to use the old stand-by . . . a deep socket and rubber hammer. However, it worked great for installing the valve springs. To hold the valve closed I placed a rubber sanding block under the head and in the dome. I then stacked the valve springs and top plate, set the keepers in position, and pressed the tool down on the top of the valve stem. The tool has a spring loaded pin that helps guide the keepers into position. It took a little muscle to press down, but, it worked!
  18. So I am tackling the 2nd gear issue on the old 1st gen and my question to ya'll is this, in order to get the split washers off of the shaft do I have to take the end NUT off first :think:or do I compress the spring with the NUT in place? It looks like a powerful spring so I dont want to test the old SAFETY GLASSES today...lol Thanks in advance:bowdown: Michael
  19. Hi All, "LET'S RIDE" weather permitting since it is the 1st day of Spring.... March 20th Deal's Gap ( aka Dragon ) breakfast, Murphy's ( NC ) chophouse for lunch, then ? Msg. us if you are interested..... Stroker Ace
  20. Just got done removing 16 inches from the drive about 150 yards to the highway. I'm hoping another 5 gallon of diesel will get me through till Spring. Oh yea when is SPRING COMING? Another snow coming Tuesday.
  21. I didn't have anything to do this afternoon so I thought I would tackle the HD Clutch Spring Kit.... I was almost wrapped up, snapping pictures the whole way when I snapped one of the 6 bolts off that holds the spring on......... OK so I was using a torque wrench that starts at 10lbs.. So I backed it off to about where I thought 5lbs would be (Note: Don't do this)..... I'm a big O dummy!! As I am tightening the bolts I am thinking these are not getting tight, so I started backing them out when one snapped off . These bolts must be crazy soft, because I didn't feel like I was over torquing them . Providing I can get this one out :/, I am replacing all six bolts and buying a torque wrench that measures inch lbs. Couple of questions- Should I use loctite ? As I said before it doesn't seem like they were very tight at all... Do you think I weakened the new spring?
  22. Well, I have decided what my First Spring Riding is going to be. Pack up the camera and go looking around. Begins almost in my backyard and great riding. See here: http://www.danielboonetrail.com/index.php
  23. I just pulled the flywheel out to send to Dano to do the starter clutch upgrade. As long as I'm in there, is there anything else I should be checking out or doing? I will also be pulling out the clutch to put in the HD spring from PCW Racing, and plates if needed. Again, anything else that I should be checking out while in there?
  24. http://cruzintheavenue.com/CarsWeDrove.htm just thought i would post this up to cheer everybody up who's suffering from this snowy weather we are having. susan came home last night and threw a snowball at me. i didn't even know it was snowing. come-on spring!! enjoy the show.
