    I need some help please

    My 09 Venture with 2k miles on is pulling to left and gets a wobble at 20 to 40 mph with no hands on it.. Dealer said the wobble is normal with no hands and the pulling to the left could be a tire and depends on yama mood and all they may replace it or may not.. My question is here does this sound like a tire issue and is the wobble sound right, it does not happen all the time, the pulling does...The air pressure in the forks is 0

  4. Should I pay the local Harley dealer 75 bucks for a new set of R/K takeoff mufflers? I don't know if the difference in sound would justify the price of the muffs. Art
  5. I know this has all been answered however I would really like some fresh comments for the following: 1. Does having the K&N filters and bubs slip on's require any jetting? 2. On the Bubs site, they only show "BUB Sleeper slip-on mufflers for the Yamaha Venture." Is this the only one that people are getting for the RSV's 3. A lot of people here have said they like the bubs but were too loud and took them off. On the Bubs site, they mention "The mufflers have removable baffles that can be packed to control your sound levels" If this is the case, why are people taking them off instead of adjusting the sound level? Does this procedure ruin the sound? Thanks to everyone that helps me with this. Greg
  6. My I basket is finally here after about two or three weeks wait. Unfortunately I have to travel for work for a few weeks and can't get it put in until after I return. I have a couple of questions please for any of you that have been through this: - My dealer was told by the Yamaha Canada Service Rep that the i basket should reduce the sound but will also move the whine sound up in rpm so that it occurs at a higher speed. This seems contrary to what I have read in some threads. I am hoping, if anything, that it will happen at lower rpm. Right now is at my low end highway cruise speed around 100 -110 km/hr, and I really don't want it at my more usual cruise speed of about 120 km/hr indicated. Any comments? - My dealer is checking if Yamaha will pay to put in the original basket if the I basket makes it worse. So far, does not sound promising. It seems to me they should put in whichever sounds better. Yamaha Canada has been very difficult to deal with. Any comments or experiences from other members? Is the I basket change really worth the effort?

I am getting a "clank" sound from the rear when I leave a stop light, ( has nothing to do with the light) I have greased the splines and the drive shaft thinking this was the problem, that didn`t do it. I am wondering if maybe the swingarm bushings/bearings need greased or re-tourqed.... or if I am looking in the wrong place... I have checked everything for any loose nuts or bolts, grabbed and tried to shake the rear end to see if I could duplicate the sound, no luck. I have noticed that if I stop only using the front brake, that I don`t hear that noise when taking off...Any help would be great!! Thanks, Kbay
  9. Everything seems to be running fine on my 97 RSTD, however I recently installed a windshield, which allows me to hear the engine noise much better. When I reach 3rd gear, I hear an "intermitant tapping" sound. It doesn't occur in any other gear and is not a bang or a grind, but can be best described as if I had hung a very small pebble by a long string and let it bounce underneath, occasionally tapping against the bike. It is a very mild sound, and sometimes can even be heard if I pull the clutch in at that gear.... I am wondering what it could be? Any thoughts
  10. Snarley Bill and I have been "discussing" which direction Yamaha will go with their future touring bike....he says it will be an updated Venture with the new Vmax 1800 engine. I've been saying that I believe it will be based on the Stratoliner. Take a look at the 2010 Stratoliner Deluxe. They are halfway there....fairing, sound system, hard bags, etc. All it lacks for me is 1.) Cruise Control and 2.) the Trunk. Hey Bill.....I can almost taste that Culpepper's Fish!!! Joe
  11. I installed the Road King pipes on my 06 RSTD about a month ago. Like many others, I quickly realized they didn't make much of a difference in the sound level. So I did the first modification of drilling the four holes in the forward baffle plates. That did make a bit of a difference and they do sound quite nice at idle or when I wind her up. But they still aren't quite loud enough for me. I have been debating about drilling out the rear baffle plate with the hole saw (mod # 2), but realize that if I do and my neighbours start circulating petitions up and down our street my only option will be to go back to the OEM pipes and start searching on ebay again. What can I say, I'm a considerate person. I would like to hear from anyone who has gone from the first mod to the second mod to get an idea if this makes a significant difference in the sound level while the bike is warming up at idle in your driveway, and if the noise level is high enough to become irritating on long trips before I start cutting.
  12. Looking for some help on my sound system. The bike is an 06 RSV and the sound from the system is intermintent in the left ear in the head set , both rider and passanger. I have two helmets and have eleminated any problem there. I do not know if the problem extends to the speaker and don't know if in fact the system is sterio when in the speaker mode. I have checked all obvious connections and applied dielectric grease to all connections and then taped them together. can anyone suggest where else I might look for the problem. If I don't find it I will take the bike to the stealer this winter (dread) I hate to let them near a fine motorcycle. thanks for you suggestions
  13. have started the chroming on my nomad. so far i have added a cobra fi 2000r module, handle bar switch for the highway lights. venturerider.org logo on the windshield, and have some goodies on the way. the injection module really made this bike come alive. next i'm trying to redesign the exaust to get a good big twin sound with a pleasant sound level. then i am going to design and machine a billet aircleaner with minimum restriction and good looks. the feds really put the hurts on this bike with the pollution standards. it was a real pooch when i got it. it was so lean on the low end that it reguired 90 plus octane fuel with 9 to 1 compression. next tank will get 89 octane, and then maybe 87 octane., no pinging so far. st. jude here we come, first official road trip. sure like this bike alot. it is almost at the top of the list with my all time favorite v-max.
  14. I just got my RSTD back from the dealer and they said there is nothing wrong with it. I took it in because it: 1) is hard to start 2) runs rough 3) vibrates alot between 40 & 50 mph 4) pops & backfires on deceleration I replaced the plugs and that didn't help. Does it sound like the carbs are out of synch? Is there a forum member in central Alabama that has a Carbtune or a set of vacuum gauges that would be willing to help me with this? I love this bike, but it's really takes the fun out of riding when it is running so crappy.
  15. Would like to know if anybody has these headsets? Tried to make my own out of plain headsets for phones or pc. But could not get the mic to work. Speakers worked fine but could only get a feedback sound on the intercom part if turned up to much. The ones I bought was a little tight with my half helmet on. Would like know if these fit?
  16. For the last couple of weeks, I've heard this jingling/jangling sound coming from low on the left of my '03 Midnight. Sounded like the spring in my side stand had given way and the stand assembly was banging up and down against the frame and/or the pipe. The sound seemed too "tinny" though to be caused by the thick stand arm. I got down and looked around on a couple of different days, and saw nothing. Yesterday (first ride in a week) the rattle was so loud, I pulled off the road, not more than two blocks from the house, to see what HAD to be ready to fall off the bike. Still couldn't see anything hanging down. The sound is VERY annoying (to the point of being DANGEROUS sounding). So now I'm starting to suspect that it's a baffle or some other internal component of the left muffler that's come loose. Sounds like someone installed a stretched out coat-hanger INSIDE the muffler by spot welding it at one end.....and letting the other end dangle against the insides of the muffler can. When I bang the back end of the pipe with my fist, it sounds just as though I were shaking my toaster to try and remove a stuck bagel!! So, tell me........DO the baffles in the stock pipes come free of their welds on a Venture this age? CAN they be welded back in place? (Kinda doubt there's any access from up the pipe!) Lastly, and most apprehensively.......what's the least expensive way out of this problem? Thanks for any words of wisdom, guys.
  17. Looking for ideas as to why 07 RSV with 10,000 miles has been popping when shifting up and when getting off the throttle. Just changed plugs with NKG's and bored out catalytic converter out of RK slip on's. Also removed the middle plate so you can see thru each pipe front to back. Gas milege is still the same, idles fine but get that pop sound. Was running 91 0ctane and just put in 87 octane and it was less today on a 50 mile ride. Any ideas or imput appreciated.   18. Purchased another RSV(1999) and just got it on the road. I was wonder if anyone has the sound that my bike makes. Here is the sound as best I can describe. It is a deep whump whump sound. At first it reminded me of a head gasket leak type of sound. But there are non. It seems to come from the lower front of the motor. None of the mechanics that have worked on the bike have said anything. Motor head son-in-law said it sounded like the cam. Bike runs great just sounds different to me. I have put almost a thousand miles on this bike and want to know if anyone has had similar sounds or issues. Have planned 4000 mile trip this year. Should I be concerned?????

July 8, 2009 - The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International has produced a simple, consistent and economical sound test standard that can be used to determine whether a street bike (on-highway motorcycle) exhaust system emits excessive sound, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports. The J2825 "Measurement of Exhaust Sound Pressure Levels of Stationary On-Highway Motorcycles," issued by the SAE in May, establishes instrumentation, test site, test conditions, procedures, measurements and sound level limits. According to the SAE, the J2825 standard is based on a comprehensive study of a wide variety of on-highway motorcycles. "The motorcycling community and law enforcement have long sought a practical field test for measuring street motorcycle exhaust sound," said Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations. "Thanks to the hard work of the Motorcycle Industry Council, and the SAE engineers involved in the project, for the first time a simple field test is now available." "The AMA maintains that few factors contribute more to misunderstanding and prejudice against street riders than excessively noisy motorcycles," Moreland continued. "With the new SAE J2825 standard, street motorcyclists can now determine how quiet, or loud, their bikes really are." Moreland added that the new standard follows a template established years ago with the SAE J1287 off-highway motorcycle sound test, a standard recommended by the AMA wherever off-highway motorcycles are operated. The SAE J2825 on-highway motorcycle sound test procedure is similar to the one used for the SAE J1287 off-highway motorcycle test. The street bike measurement requires holding a calibrated sound meter at a 45-degree angle 20 inches from the exhaust pipe of a running engine. The procedure spells out how to do the test with the bike at idle, at a predetermined engine speed ("Set RPM Test"), or by slowly increasing the engine speed of the bike, known as the "Swept RPM Test." The SAE J2825 standard, prepared by the SAE Motorcycle Technical Steering Committee, recommends a decibel limit of 92 dBA at idle for all machines; or, using the Set RPM or Swept RPM Test, 100 dBA for three- or four-cylinder machines, and 96 dBA for bikes with fewer than three or more than four cylinders. The creation of a new street motorcycle sound measurement procedure was a top recommendation of the 2003 National Summit on Motorcycle Sound, expressed by its Motorcycle Sound Working Group. The AMA organized the National Summit on Motorcycle Sound to pull together riders and user organizations, representatives of the motorcycle manufacturers, the aftermarket industry, racing promoters, government agencies, and others to develop proposals regarding the increasingly controversial issue of excessive motorcycle sound. "The J2825 test allows jurisdictions around the nation, struggling with complaints about excessive motorcycle sound, to set reasonable limits in accordance with the SAE standard," said Moreland. "While the AMA supports the establishment of the SAE J2825 standard in America's cities, towns and communities, we will continue to fight efforts that single out motorcycles while still permitting excessive sound from other sources, such as loud cars and trucks, booming car stereos, poorly maintained generators, whining leaf blowers, and the like."
  20. I been wanting to change the exhaust on my RSV now for a while. It's all most impossible to find a used set of exhaust for the RSV. I heard most of them, and liked the sound of the Khromewerks the most. I'm giving up on trying to find a exhaust system ( slip on's ) and am looking into buying some HD exhaust slip on, being the HD exhaust are so much easyer to find Whats involed with adding the HD slip on's to the RSV? Also, any suggestions as to which HD exhaust fits the RSV? I did find these on our firms here , and wondering what they sound like, and whats needed to add them onto the bike: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php/product/2157/cat/7 Another concern we had, was the Khromewerks slip on's wasn't to loud. We wanted a nice deep rumble out the back, but somthing that wasn't to over welming that would over power the radio and communcation's, as we ride allot 2-UP, but also wanted somthing for the Friday night rides, where we want to crack the throttle and hear the exhaust, like the HD's. Here I am with my RoadKing pipes (slip ons) and they have a nice rumble to them when it's cold out but now in the summer heat they are tamed down and sound like all the other RSV.. not bad.. no worries.. But Hmm what if I wanna have a louder sound? Not talking about ear splitting racket but a manly-man sounding bike, ya know? (yes, you know what I mean I keep seeing references on making the RK pipes louder but can't find info how to do it or if it's reversible.. Or would I be better off with a new set of slipons, ones that are meant for the RSV, that offer a nice sound.. The Baron 4-2-4 I've heard and didnt like the look or sound, unfortunately, sorry.. What's everyone else running that they enjoy most? Thanks in advance. Cheers
  22. I Hope this isn't a strange request. I'm looking for a set of mufflers off a first gen bike, I don't need the collector box or headers just the mufflers. I want to put them on my XS1100 sidecar rig. The megaphone on it are eaten through and loud as hell. Very uncomfortable to ride so loud because the sound reverbs off the sidecar body making it worst, I like the look and sound of the oem cans and would like to put a set on the 11. if anyone has a set that they've taken off and have lying around I'd be glad to negotiate a price for them.   24. My RSTC has jardines on it and they sound good. BUT, I am wanting to go to the 4 into 2 style. I have read that some guys have used Harley pipes to do this. Or, are there kit out there for this application. I want a deeper sound than the Jardines, that is why I am researching this. Thanks.

Riders, I know this topic has been beaten to death but I need to know "from the last related posting" what is the majority of members using for after market mufflers I don't have the metel knowledge to make mods that installing the "road king" mufflers would take.. I don't want LOUD, but I do want that deep rumble sound that will let cagers know I'm there.. Bubs ? " Do the sleepers still have the crome tip issue? Kromeworks ? etc etc Help a fellow rider out 06 RSTD THanks
