2003 Midnight RSV 1999 in rebuild stage
  1. Last year I went 4000 miles on new Dunlop 404 rear. After looking at them before this season I new it would need replaced within 500-1000 miles so I ordered Michelin Commanders from the Motorcycle Superstore. They are running some kind of sale right now. Rear $111.99 and front $99.99 shipped free. I thought that the mileage that I got was not as great as all of the other Dunlop 404's from the past. I have an 2003 Midnight venture that got about the same results. No more Dunlop's for me. I thought I saw somewhere that they were made in India. Maybe that is the reason they wear faster. Inferior product?????
  2. I purchased an 03 RSV at a good price and I'm trying to get right before I re sell it. It has new tires, brakes and the head bearings seem to be right according to the adjustment info supplied here for bump and return of the front end as posted. The problem is that when you go into a turn you feel as if you have to muscle it. You almost have to pull with one hand and push with the other. It is not as smooth as my 1999 RSV. I have a suspicion that something may be out of alignment or bent. Anyone have any ideas as to how to check if something is bent (ie: fork leg)? Any help is appreciated.
  3. Synthetic Amsoil 10W-40W 800 miles ago. I don't think it's the clutch basket as I've changed 2 out on other ventures and it doesn't resemble that sound. Almost sounds cylinder like to me. But I'm no motor guy. After this weekend I have 1000 mile since putting on the road 4 weeks ago. No apparent issues so I guess I'll just run it till something gives or not.
  4. It is definitely a motor sound and not tire, brake or wheel sound. It also speeds up as the rpm's build. Has a deeper sound than the norm. Don't you just hate it when someone tries to describe a sound?? Everybody's description sounds different.
  5. Purchased another RSV(1999) and just got it on the road. I was wonder if anyone has the sound that my bike makes. Here is the sound as best I can describe. It is a deep whump whump sound. At first it reminded me of a head gasket leak type of sound. But there are non. It seems to come from the lower front of the motor. None of the mechanics that have worked on the bike have said anything. Motor head son-in-law said it sounded like the cam. Bike runs great just sounds different to me. I have put almost a thousand miles on this bike and want to know if anyone has had similar sounds or issues. Have planned 4000 mile trip this year. Should I be concerned?????
  6. You also have the option, before loading them to the SD card, to make a play list. This is done in Media player or in other programs for music and media by creating a list naming it and sending the songs to the play list. When done filing send to the SD card.
  7. I had a set on a 1999 that I bought and they were so rusted that replacement was the only option. After that I was curious as to how to get to the insides to repack them just in case I got other ideas. As it turned out I drilled out the rivits and then I pounded out from the inlet side. I don't remember what I used exactly but I think it was a dowel of sorts. Once started they came out more easily baffle and all. Easy to repack at this point. As for the end caps it would be way easier to work on them once this assembly is removed. Thought about having them beaded and high temp powder coated black to match the midnight Venture. Would be cool but you still have the headers in chrome unless you did them also.
  8. Both the wife and myself have chaps made by Ron at Buffalo Billfolds and Belts. High quality with lots of options. You can reach him at Buffalo Billfolds and Belts. Best to call him at 1-877-422-8900 toll free.(USA east coast) His company also manufactures a line of western chaps, belts, wallets and more. The leather is supple yet heavier than most. You may fit in a standard size but if you are hard to fit he makes custom. They may seem a little pricey but the quality is way better than all of the foreign makes out there. American made with 5oz. leather heavy YKK zippers, double snaps over zippers and concho rear fastener. Give him a call.
  9. My son-in-law and I, well mostly my-in-law tore down the carbs on a recently purchased 99 RSV. After plenty of Seafoam and him cleaning the inside of the carbs and numerous installs and removals was that gas was coming out the overflows profusely. What we finally found was the neoprene o rings that seal in the float seats had shrunk and were not sealing and fuel was flowing around the seat. It seems as though when cleaning the carbs we cleaned the gunk from around the o rings and they wouldn't seal after that. We went to the parts store and found metric o rings to replace the bad ones. (as you have to buy the whole seat set from the Yammy dealer) Installed the carbs once again. No leaks. It may be that sometimes cleaning the carbs with carb cleaner may loosen the gunk and let fuel around the float seats. Again this is for what it's worth.
  10. About 2-3 months ago I did the change myself with little difficulties. Had the Clymer manual. Switch was done on my 99 RSV and was a dramatic difference. You need an impact wrench and a metric socket for the large nut in the clutch. Also a torque wrench. After that just pay attention to the diagrams. I plan on doing this to my newest bike as I was rear ended 3 weeks ago and my bike was totaled. Hard to believe that I could buy another bike with the same problem but it's an easy fix for me. Just to let you folks know, I bought the parts from MR cycles for just under $200.00. That was gaskets, lock nut and primary drive gear("I" basket). All of the part numbers are available here on the forum. I just don't have them in front of me at this posting. I think that paying over $300.00 for this fix is way to much for as easy as it was. Getthe manual and you won't be disappointed. Comes in handy for other stuff. Like lending it to your buddies.
