  1. The first mod is to replace the carbs with "Guppy 471's". No, they're not fuel injectors, they're gills. Also plan on taking off the Avons and putting on "Evenrudes". Will get me through the water better. Replace the stock handlebars with a new chrome "Rud-R", gotta steer this beast somehow. The hard bags will go, pontoons in their place. Finally, all my road gear, jacket with CE armor, riding pants that are padded and armored, full face flip up helmet, gloves- chuck it all for a good wet suit and scuba gear. At least I'd get the bike out.....
  2. I went on a poker run Saturday. It started out to be a very pretty day, left the house about 8am to run up to Rincon to pick up Donna. Got back here about 11, but the ride had left out about 30 minutes before we got signed up. Knowing how these things work, I figured we could take our time and catch the group by the 2nd or 3rd stop. So Heading for the first stop, a GSP goes flying by us. Then an ambulance. Started wondering. We come around a curve, and theres about 50 bikes, a couple firetrucks, 2 deputy cruisers, the GSP, and the ambulance. It turns out that one of the road guards, figured that he needed to get back to the front to play road guard again, instead of falling in at the back of the group. So he goes flying past the group, gets around half of them, and loses it. hit a tight curve around 80 mph on his Road King. Thank god the curve was a right hand curve or he would have taken out a half dozen other bikes with him. He went off the road, through about a 100 feet of tall grass before finding the trees. He did manage to get it slowed down to the point that he crushed his right leg, Now has a steel rod. And a severe concussion. Needless to say, his bike is toast. But he'll live to tell his story. So Anyways, after an hour delay, we did finish the ride, But this kinda took the fun element out of it for most of us. Roger is gonna be ok, If his wife Julie has her say, he'll never ride again. Anyhow about a 250 mile day. mid 80s, very nice day. Didn't even bother to stick around to see who won. Gave 50/50 tickets to one of the organizers and asked them to give the cash to Roger if I won. Liability only on his bike, he may be able to piece it back together. Depending on frame and forks.
  3. We've all been there, where to ride, been there, done that so I just hop on the old bike and decide to follow where my turn signals go blink blink blink.Southwest OH and southeast IN on a short ride but I thought I would just take a few pics along the way for the fun of it. I think it was october last year so I pop up out of my hole in the ground to make sure it is safe to ride.. http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/919.jpg Have a little look around... http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/918.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/920-1.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/916.jpg So I hit the road to nowhere.. http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/901.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/904.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/902.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/905.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/903.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/909-1.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/908.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/910.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/913.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/912.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/yamaha_28/915.jpg Just a two hour ride to nowhere but it was worth it. Short rides and a few overniters is about all I have time for but I always look forward to them.http://www.ohioriders.net/images/smilies/ridingmotorcycle.gif
  4. Well as of yesterday I have had my 83 on the road. I have a few problems that need adressed. The first is the @#$% brakes. They stink. I went through and rebled them and now they are worse. I know I am missing something here but when you cant stop 900 lbs rolling down the road you have a problem. The second is the cooling fan, why does it wait until the gauge is at the red before it will come on? Third is it is running rich, smells like gas when you start it and as long as it idles you can smell it. After you ride for a while it clears up, why? Fourth is there a taller windshield for the early MK1's? The top edge is right at eye level. Other than the brakes these are minor problems. Thank you for all the help. Shaun
  5. Latest project for the scooter sunk to a new low. I bought an adjustable backrest bracket from a 2007 Harley Road Glide and mounted it on the bike. I didn't get the mounting bar for the backrest or the actual backrest so I fabricated one up. The mounting brackets were also McGyvered from stock steel pieces . I had to remove a section of the plastic base for the seat and a little foam for the bracket clearance. It is a removable backrest and the tilt can be adjusted forward and back. There is a cable made for it that I didn't get. The tilt feature is something I really don't care if I have, since once I get it set where I want it, it won't need to move again. I can trigger the tilt but the seat needs to be off in order to do it without the cable. There are two pictures of the orange bike that is a Road Glide with the stock bracket mounted to it. I don't have the backrest covered or the bar powder coated. Those are tomorrows project. Cost for the bracket on ebay was $46 with shipping and I have about another $30 in a couple of pieces of steel and the foam and covering material. It really does make the bike more comfortable. Road it for about 40 miles tonight and I like it. Bike didn't seem any slower with the HD part on it either. Gary
  6. i've been on here for over 2 yrs now and see all the tire questions but havnt seen or missed this one, most tell their dislike for bridgestone but never state why they dislike them, they came on my 2010 rsv and even tho i've only gotten 350 miles thus far they seem to hold the road well anddont follow road smakes as bas as the 404's do just wondered what it as about them we dislike thanks steve
  7. Took the FJR out this Morning -7C....Couldnt wait.... Every Spring I go to my favourite road and give the scoot a run Now I'm thinking of the road condition like salt, loose sand, Moose, deer ,rodents and the shifting of the payment. 211 Kph on the garmin GPS , to you members down south thats..131.03 mph Oh!! What a Feeling..... What a RUSH!!!
  8. A couple weeks ago we were at a show 'n shine car show and were approached by an agent for a production company to try out for a commercial. They were looking for a couple between 25 & 65 who ride motorcycle. He took some pics and video of Nina & I and about 2 days later we got a call for a screening. Did that and 2 days later we got a call that we were the "chosen ones". Turns out they'd looked at about 1,000 people! Yesterday was the shooting day. We had to be on set at 5:30AM but it took us an hour to get there, with at least 25 minutes of it on a single lane gravel road taking us way back into the boonies to a government campground. Had no idea what to expect but WOW... this was a major production. Must have been 100 or more crew there, production equipment and trucks all over the place, and a large catering truck with full breakfast all ready. Weather was cloudy and cool and by the time we arrived, the bike (and us) was totally covered with dust from the road. Speaking of which, I am amazed that we never dumped the bike... it was a lot of loose gravel, hilly, lots of curves, and washboardy, not to mention that we were in the dark and a bit behind other vehicles so the dust made it real hard to see. There were 3 shoot locations and nobody seemed to know exactly when or where "our part" came in so it was a "hurry up and wait" .... finally, around 11AM we were instructed to go to the next shoot location where they'd be filming us. Once there, they had us ride the bike down a long straight road (paved at least) while the filming truck ran alongside. We had to fall back, speed up, stay beside, and act as we would normally be while riding. We did this a couple times and then they had us follow the filming truck... riding up very close to the back, falling way back and speeding up real close to it again...then they'd pull over to the other lane and we'd speed past them...fall back ... speed past again... it was quite the experience! After that we went to the 3rd shooting location and did a bunch of "parked" filming. I was sitting on the bike and Nina would grab the helmets from the trunk, bring them over to me, we'd don the helmets, gloves and then she'd get on the bike. Did that scene about 6 or 8 times varying how we did it. It was a pretty "cool" experience and we finished up around 4:15PM and finally got home around 5PM, totally tired out. Got a few pics but haven't dumped them off the camera yet so will post them later. So, some day, when you least expect it, you just may see us and our RSMV on a Campbell's Soup commercial!!
  9. Ok, I've been a big supporter of the Avon Venons. I'm happy with them as an all round, all weather tire. But I'm at the point where the set I have now needs to be replaced. The one thing I'd like to gain in a new set of tires is better handling on off the beaten path roads. Lime rock, gravel and dirt. The Avons are not the greatest on these kinds of roads. I'm not going all out off road here but I do tend to wander down any road that will take me to someplace interesting. I live in Nebraska for Gods sake. It takes some effort to get someplace interesting. I ran Contys on my old GWs back in the 80's and they worked pretty well on the gravel roads. They were a pretty well treaded tire. Any recommendations on tire that would be an improvement in this area that would be available in 1st gen sizes? Mike
  10. Beautiful day in Virgina my nephew and I went riding on HWY 16 from Marion Va. I still think the Dragon has nothing on this road.
  11. Tonight as I left work at 2 AM my HID went out. I didnt notice it right away until I hit a real dark stretch of road. It was then I realized that I was riding with only those dreaded LED driving lights. I cant believe how much illumination those LEDs put out. It was almost like riding with a stock headlight. I saw a nice clear band of light in front of me. Those LEDS really lit up the road. As far as the HID headlight goes, this has happened a few times before. I sent Canadian Cruiser Customizing an email and requested a replacement ballast since its still under warranty. Ill see what response I get. I cant have that light go out on me at night any more.
  12. I know some here have more than one bike and I was wondering if anyone has sync'ed the carbs on a Road Star. If so, is there a write-up on the procedure? I'm assuming it is possible...
  13. need some help on coming up with a tool kit to travel with.i have the little one that comes in the saddle bag but was wondering with the help of you veterens which is the most used tool on a road trip.i know you cant take everything just need a good starting point, thanks.
  14. Bearthooth: when we where planning this Kalispel trip I bought a scenic by ways book. The first thing it said about the beartooth was this hwy is not for the faint of heart! This was a correct statement but what fun! Out of all the byways we traveled over the years this has been in the top 5. The road was real bumpie so the video is shaky. I hope you enjoy, and if Yellowstone is in your plans this is a must road. Hwy 212 out of the north east side of Yellowstone. http://www.photoshow.com/watch/Gx3pK6YR Phill
  15. It never seems to fail that this time of year when it warms up a little, bad things happen to people on motorcycles. A couple of weeks ago with a little bit of a warm up, we had two motorcycle fatalities. One was a man and the other biker was a woman. It both cases, it appears to have been due to losing control and hitting something. I always hate to see this and I know that I am always a little apprehensive when I first get the bike out. I also like to get some seat time before I take on a passenger. Anyway, be careful out there and watch out for others no watching out for you and there always seems to be more stuff on the road. RandyA
  16. Installed my new custom seat and went out for a ride. Life is good! Then I went over a rough spot in the road and all of a sudden a loud noise and when I look in my rear view mirror....there's my trunk. Bouncing down the road like a freaking basketball! I know I had it latched good, but apparently I forgot to set the lock to 'locked'. Argh! So, does anybody know if MKII trunks are compatible with MKI bikes? There's one on eBay that's the right color, but it's an '87 and mines an '83. They look the same but just wanna make sure.
  17. INDOT uses a private contractor to paint the stripes on the state highways. The contractor boss hired a guy to paint the center stripe on a little used stretch of road. On the first day the guy painted about a mile-and-a-half of road and the boss told him "Good job, see you in the morning". The next day the guy painted only about three quarters-of-a-mile and the boss told him "Hey, you didn't do so good today, let's hope tomorrow is better". On the third day he only paints about a quarter-of-a-mile. The boss says "Well you have really slacked off. This is unacceptable. I'm going to have to let you go". The guy responds,"That's not fair!!! The more I paint the farther I have to walk to get to the paint bucket!".
  18. K-90 IN MO. IS A GREAT MOTORCYCLE ROAD! http://www.photoshow.com/watch/vN3pZ8Rt PHILL
  19. I'm all about being seen for protection.. Not only is it important to put out a lot of light in order to see the road ahead of you for potential dangers, but it's also important to be able to BE seen by oncoming traffic and others by putting out enough light without blinding the already blind. If you watch a bike approaching you on the road, its the "blob" of light you see that determines how noticeable you really are.. hence driving with high beam during the day time makes you more noticeable, driving with highway light makes this blob a lot wider, more noticeable.. safer. A nice offset with the new lights installed is that gains over 84Watts back to the bike electrical system, allowing me to potentially add way more accessories if I needed to.. which I do HID headlight draws only 35W as it is a single bulb double action set up, instead of using the conventional 55/65 bulbs.. HID puts out a lot of light, bright white light that it also drowns out your highway lights.. these no longer really aid in lighting up the road anymore as the HID sweeps across the road and reach out into the darkness.. Not only that but because the HID is a cooler white light, the highway lights now have a really yellow / amber look to them.. and they no longer stand out at all.. I installed these new LED sealed beam lights on the bike and well sir, what I can tell you is that they superseded MY expectations above and beyond.. They put out 120 lumens each.. And they are also bright white colour. And only require 8 watts each from the bike.. do the math, that's a lot of watts back for the toys.. The included photos will show first what the oem sealed beam looks like on the wall.. then the LED sealed beam.. it's mounted on the LEFT side of the bike. The HID and other light covered to isolate the given highway light's light.. Notice the yellow of the right light compared to the left light.. Now the BLOB of light is much wider and discernible than before.. the dim yellow of the oem light is no longer longer lost in the HID's light.. I'll have to wait and see what it looks like out on the road at night.. how it looks when seen from the front etc.. Still more testing and trying it out to see how viable these will be for a long run.. the HID worked out superbly, now hopefully these will to.. can't see why not.. Sealed, solid state.. LED.. Hmm
  20. Below are some pictures of the first four panels from my cousins HD Road Glide. All are being done in a horror film/Halloween theme, with a different theme on each panel. Though side covers, which appear to both be pumpkins. Most of the characters in the panels have been modified to resemble Hogs. The left side of the tank is Freddie Kruger, but with hog features. Not for most people, but what he wanted. There is some extreme detail in theses. The guy that is doing them has put about a week in the tank alone. His bike is the orange on on the right in the last picture as it was. Gary
  21. A bus load of politicians were driving down a country road one afternoon, when all of a sudden, the bus ran off the road and crashed into a tree in an old farmer's field. Seeing what happened, the old farmer went over to investigate. He then proceeded to dig a hole and bury the politicians. A few days later, the local sheriff came out, saw the crashed bus, and asked the old farmer, "Were they all dead?" The old farmer replied, "Well, some of them said they weren't, but you know how them politicians lie."
  22. saw two up on a two tone blue 1st gen yesterday In the city of Davie Florida, on giffen road, just west of the bass pro shop, heading west. anyone from here?
  23. Some of you know Muffin went to CA with his aunt to help her move. Well then he flew to NY to my folks house and I rode up to meet him for Christmas. No big deal, till we leave. Headed out today at 6:30 am and got home by 7 PM. No snow till we were off of 1 in DE, then nothing but snow all the way home. Couldn't see the road in spots, we'd finally see something that resembles a line on the road and get excited. (scary when you aren't sure where the road is and where the ditch is)We actually drove on 64 in VA at 20 mph and at times that felt too fast. Was a bit scary, but it also looks really pretty here. Everything is covered in snow all the trees my front door all white. Of course it will be melting because by saturday it's gonna be up near 60 for our annual meet. All in all it was a great weekend even with the little bump of snow. (ok not so much a bump) Hope you all had a great Christmas and hope you don't have too much snow for the folks on the east coast. That wind is gonna be awful. I did get some nice pics I'll have to post a little later. Margaret
  24. Just curious, why are only Road King mentioned as an alternative exhaust as all HD (touring) use the same size pipes. Just wondering as there are countless alternatives for the HD folks to buy, (Rush, Rinehart, Cobra, Sampson, Chrome Works, Barron's, Screaming Eagle... you get the idea) Why wouldn't they fit the RSTD? Tom
  25. I am thinking this guy is runnin a scam or his is severely misinformed. This is a funny looking Road Star with a side car, and then he calls it a venture farther down in the ad. http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-touring-1986-Yamaha-Road-Star-W0QQAdIdZ245878539 Brian
