  1. A friend of my seems to think his new Ultra with new exhaust will hang with my Venture. I'm not the racing type, especially with friends but I'm sure it'll happen sooner or later. We've both got a lot of years riding experience. What can I expect the outcome to be, besides still being best friends. Eddie
  2. The wife and I were riding around yesterday when at a reststop she told me it looked like my trunk was bouncing when I hit sizable bumps in the road. (She was riding her V-Star 1100). I immediately found that 2 bolts were missing on the left side from the support bars. Also one on the other side was turned about 1/2 way out. Fortunately I had a bunch of zip ties with me and proceeded to attach them for temp. support. I had just gone over the bike a week earlier with a very good eye when I was spit shining it for a PGR Mission. They were there then, and tight. (I figured they were tight as no space between head of bolt and attachment bar). Anyone ever have these come loose on their own? I will be getting with my dealer in the morning to express ship me a couple of these. I am riding back to work a week from today, (Sunday, July 27th), 1200 miles one way and would prefer bolts over zip ties. I have a bit of luggage, but don't put that much in the trunk. Usually a couple bags on the pilion seat.
  3. So, we were out riding yesterday, me on my Midnight and my wife on her Honda Reflex. She's been riding on public roads since last Tuesday after three sessions in a church parking lot, so she's very new to the whole thing. When we were approaching the end of a two-lane stretch, I pulled into the left lane to give her some protection from traffic coming from behind when I notice an SUV coming up at speed on the inside. We are already in the area where the center dotted line has gone and the road is narrowing. I speed up a little and ease to the middle of the road, again to protect my wife ahead and indicate to the SUV that there's no room for her to undertake and, guess what? She does it anyway! As she passes I notice it's a middle-aged woman of the "trophy wife" type, with a yappy dog on her lap. Not immediately sure if she completed the trifecta with a cellphone or not, but it's possible. She then proceeds to ride my wife's tail for about a mile, overtakes her in a turning lane then makes a right turn. It was then that the Sheriff's patrol car comes flying by with blues and twos going full pelt! I signaled to turn and we ended up in a church parking lot and the deputy was giving the SUV driver a lecture on how not to drive, especially when motorcycles are involved! It's the first time in 30+ years of driving that a cop has been in the right place at the right time!! She got off with a warning, but I wonder if people like this EVER thing of the stupidity of their actions and the fact that if there's a wreck, they'd be inconvenienced by a few days of collision repair while the motorcyclist will be either in the hospital or in the morgue, just because they had to get one car's length ahead!
  4. Just wanted to let everybody know that my hip surgery seems to have gone well...sore as all get out now, but I am sure it will get better. This about ruins the rest of my riding season, but there's always next year. Hope everybody has a safe riding season...stay healthy and keep it between the ditches.
  5. I havent been on in a while. My wife is in Minnesota taking care of her mother after a surgery. (Mother-in-law is doing well.) I'll be leaving Tuesday going out to Camp Pendleton, Oceanside Ca. driving a 26' U-Haul with all their possessions loaded up in it. And my bike loaded in a trailer. Looks like i will have a friend riding out with us. He will be riding his 1100 honda shadow back with me. going to bed now with a major headache. I'll be dreaming about adding them new states.
  6. just a thank you to all at the Rally in Kitchener, my first...... hope it didn't show too much..... riding in formation!!! been riding for 40 years, and because of the remote location, usually alone or with 3 or 4 other riders..... never 60 bikes ( or there abouts). want to thank the organizers, and hope to see some of you again at the next one, the wife and I ( and the white Poodle) do not do well on long rides, but with enough notice ,we can arrange holidays and do it in 2 days or so.......BIKER JOHN51 or GRUMPY_BEAR
  7. Hi Folks. Zooby and I are headed down to do the Dragons Tail and the Blue Ridge at the end of the month. We are planning a quick run down to Ashville, and then riding the Blue Ridge back. If anyone has any recommendations such as where to camp, what to see and what to avoid, we would very much appreciate the help. Thanks

    New Avons

Ok, just installed the new venoms! can't wait to try them out! What pressures everyone running? I do a lot of two up riding. Also, load limits just under 900#? Kinda light for an 875# bike?
  9. I'm wondering if anyone could help. New member as of last week and not really computer savy. I need to buy a pair of clear glasses for riding home later than we should. We always seem to ride too late and my eyesight isn't the best, when it's dusk. I would like a pair that the wind can't get through the sides. Appreciate any input, otherwise I'm going to have to start riding with the hubby and I'd just as soon keep driving my own bike. Thanks!
  10. Passed a Midnight RSV on my way home from work yesterday. He had a female (wife/girlfriend/daughter) riding on the back. He had the only good bike beings what he was riding with two other people on gold wings, one pulling a trailer and the other with some kind of a trike setup . It was on I-24 West about a mile from the Paducah, KY exit. Just wonderin if he reads this web site. If so, give me a shout. Glenn
  11. Thought this was pretty cool to keep a little one from falling off. Said he bought it in canada but it was made for horse back riding and snowmobiling. Jerry
  12. This is 8:43 long. It gets perty interesting at about half way through. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs2RnbvHSuU]YouTube - ?????????????????[/ame]
  13. Man I am so bummed. Had a dumb thing happen in my eye, went to the dr and here I have a torn retina. Repared it with laser blasts (55 of them1) but no lifting bending straining for 6 weeks! I asked about riding. He got right testy about it - bottom line, no riding for 6 weeks. Man. I guess this is better than having complications, but I am still bummed. This means I will have time to have that new Bushtec trailer that I am winning from the Kitchener rally color matched to the bike and all before I go pick it up. Reiney - hope you kept my contact information so you can let me know. Give me a PM if you need reminding about my ticket numbers and my telephone number.
  14. No, it's not an ad for kevlar shirts, honest. It's the only video that came out. I'm still working on that whole backwards aiming thing. This was on 46 between Columbus and Gnaw Bone. That's the Jethroishes, then the Mariner Fans, followed by the Leadwolves. Thanks for riding with me guys. Sorry you couldn't make it all the way, Dan. [ame= ] [/ame]

  16. Recently retired and bought an 05 RSTD with around 20,000 on it. I will be leaving from South GA on July 14 for an 'epic' 34 day ride across the US back(I hope). Never having ridden in the Rockies I am looking forward to it but wonder if there are any problems to expect when riding in such high altitudes with a bike that has carbs. The last decade I rode a 91 Concours which was also had carbs but I never ventured far from the south. I would welcome any constructive advice or tips. By the way this is my first post. Thanks, warrenstar
  17. Less than 12 hours before we depart for WVSI, and they wont go by quick enuff, just hope I can stay super busy at work so the time will fly, cause at 2:30 sharp I am out of ther for 4 days of fun riding in the mtns of WV.............looks like it might be a wet ride up there and Skid just advised me might be a little wet up there too.......so what.......Im getting away for a much needed short vacation on the bike,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,:dancefool::sign woo hoo:
  18. Anybody ever see this before? This is what we're up against when we're out there riding? http://www.dothetest.co.uk/
  19. Got up fairly early this morning. A member from Norwalk, OH had called yesterday asking if I could help him sync his carbs and I said sure, come on by. So he was here about 10:00 this morning and we got the carbs synced. Then of course the yard needed mowing so I spent about 4 or 5 hours doing that. Absolutely beautiful day. So I finished the yard and came in the house to change clothes and take a little ride and no sooner had I gotten ready than one HECK of a thunderstorm rolled in. Checked the weather and they were warning of hail and winds up to 60 MPH. So much for riding. Most of it has blown through now but it's still raining. Small tree limbs all over the place but nothing major. Oh well....maybe tomorrow.
  20. I was riding my RSV today w/2 up, doing 65-70mph on a straight open ND hiway with no trees, and a 25mph gusting cross wind. I was being blown around pretty good, using up about 1/2 the lane. I was riding with a friend on a Honda Shadow that said he was being blown around too but I don't think as much as me. Then another biker comes up on a cruiser with an addon windshield & soft bag, no fairing or hard bags...this guy flew around us at about 75-80mph with one hand on the bars, waved to us with the other, & had no problem holding his line at all. I continued watching & he kept riding with 1 hand until out of sight. I "think" I have pretty good balance, and riding in wind normally isn't a big deal, but with both my RSV & VR, with a straight cross wind I seem to get blown around more than other bikes. Just wondering if what I experience is "normal" with these bikes or not? I always attributed the issue on the VR to it's high center of gravity, but the RSV seems much lower...so I'm a bit confused...?
  21. There were way too many titles for this thread running through my head! "Watch That Front Brake!" "Here We Go Again!" "Love the Fork Brace, But...." And the always great: "Oh S#*T!" I put my new fork brace on, and to do so, I had to take my VR.o gremlin bell off. It is mounted in a hole in the end of my front axle. I forgot to put it back on, but I am now a believer!!! I put my new brace on and went for a ride. LOVED IT! It really tightened things up! I could just think of trying to scrape from side to side and it would do it. I tried braking in a turn and very little shake. And the shake that was there was....solid is the only word for it. I took the bike up to 55, set the cruise and hands free, I hit the right handle bar. It shook twice and that was it! Same on the left. I wasn't geared up so I didn't go out on the highway for a high speed test. After lunch with my sister, I was headed home, I ran through a neighborhood by mine with nice twisties (SleeperHawk, Mechanic, Swifty and Beer30 know where I'm talkin' about!). I ran thru there at 45/50mph! I usually run thru there at 35/40 and it felt better than 25/30! I decided to try braking in a left sweeper at about 50. I grabbed some front brake and it felt really solid............until the front wheel locked for a second. That's when the bike I was riding was magically ten feet in front of me sliding on it's side. I was, like "OK, it's all goo.....S#*T don't flip!!!..................D@&M!!".Well, at least it was the right side this time. I needed to replace the right mirror anyway. At this point I want to say...I'm OK, nothin' broken, just a little road rash. Left elbow, left calf and left "cheek" (I know, I know......."At least you're ok", but I'll heal, the bike will take money and work!) A friend of mine said "I know,.........you were riding in shorts and a T-shirt." I said "Hell NO!................I was riding in shorts,......and a Flowerdy Hawaiin shirt!!!" I still have the fairing brace from the last crash and I think I can cut it in half and trash the "crashed" parts, use the good halves and weld it back together. So, I guess I'm back in the plastic fixin' business! There are a couple of fairings on eBay that I'm gonna try for, if they go cheap enough. May be time for that repaint. I just need some real winter this year to stop riding it and paint!!! OK, it's time to swab my wounds in alcohol......I think I'll try some bourbon......from the inside! Anybody got an extra right side mirror? BTW: I've already been called "Skid" (we've got one of those!) and Crash (we've got one of those too!). And "RoadScab" aint gonna get it, Fly-N-lo!
  22. Who is the oldest biker here? When will you stop riding? I'm a young 56 with 40 years of riding, no end in sight.
  23. Guest

    50 mpg (US)

I don't understand this at all, but in several trips on my 87 VR I have gotten 50+ mpg several times, and just not one tank but several successive ones. Generally I run at 40 mpg. Couple of theories? 1. Maybe fuel without ethanol makes a difference. 2. Seems to do better when the weather is HOT. 3. Clearly riding at 45 - 50 mpg, nice and sedately makes a difference, but that much? 4. Head/tail wind? I know this will drive Greg in London nuts, but it is the facts.
  24. What are the dates for the Eureka Springs, Ar. ride in? Is it to early to make the reservations? I think the wife and I are planning on taking most of the week off and do some riding there before hand. Looking forward to seeing you all again. Thanks, Dandy
  25. The following pix shows what my rear Dunlop D404 did to me last Sunday while going to a Blessing of the Bikes in Litchfield, CT. My wife and I were 12 miles from home when we both felt that thumping especially when banking to the left. My riding buddy checked it out and we immediately changed our plans after realizing what was happening. I gingerly drove it back home and returned with the cage to experience the cerimony. Earlier this season, I realized that my tire guage was faulty and was causing me to ride underinflated by several pounds. I do NOT blame this on Dunlop but on riding for 3 yrs underinflated. Make sure your tire guages are reading properly. I have since purchased Dunlop EIII's. Brian
