  1. First day of lay-off myself and two riders from work went for 500klm ride to Collingwood and surrounding area. Roads and scenery were great. Not to many trees were turning colour but it was a great ride anyway. Stopped for supper at Ted's Range Road Diner outside of Meaford (west of Collingwood)and had a Bison burger(good eats) . the menu was very broad including wild game allkinds of fish and sea food. He is biker friendly as one of my fellow riders seen his ad in in motorcycle magazine and as he doesn't open till 5:00pm his wife asked him and he opened at around 3:00pm just so we could have a meal(only burgers and fries with a drink) and be on our way. Would recomend this place for good food. Not much to look at from out side but all right inside. Looking forward to going to New York for the ride thru the mountains to see the leaves changing colour on the 13th of Oct.

    Great ride - Northern PA

The co-pilot and I left yesterday early afternoon from the house, headed up to Williamsport, spent the night. This morning on up to Wellsboro to the Grand Canyon of PA, east on Rt. 6, and south on a combination of roads including Rt. 220. What a wonderful ride! Leaves are starting to turn, and the air was just the right degree of crisp.
  3. I know it is happening far too frequently but I have to add my name to the list of those that have crashed this year and it was my fault. It was threatening rain today but I had to ride to work anyway due to having an appointment at noon to have new tires mounted before my ride to Florida next week. As I rode it began to rain so I made it to gas station with a canopy to pull under so I could put my rain pants on. I was about 100 yards from an intersection and I had to make a left out of the station crossing two lanes of inbound traffic to get to the outbound lane. It was raining lightly. I had to wait for traffic moving in both directions. I kept watching to the left and saw that the light was changing at the intersection so the traffic would have to stop and, I could get out before the people turning right off of the cross street made it to me. I again looked left, right, back left and started out. As crossed the near lane and proceeded into the next lane I looked to the left again about 10 yards from me was a black Honda coming right at me. I had failed to see her car. I was fully perpendicular to her lane was in her way. I thougt to myself, "this ain't going to be pretty". I recall hearing an impact but don't recall any pain. Seconds later I stood up and was really disoriented from being spun around in the air. I found my bearings and walked back to the gas station to get under the canopy. A few minutes later the EMT, fire dept, police, and then my wife show up. All so surreal. I have a little soreness in my left thigh from hitting the right side of the tank and a bit of soreness above my left ankle. And, HELMETS WORK, the ladie's windshield was broken at the base just above her hood. She said my head hit it. At my wife's insistence I'm going to the DR this afternoon to get checked out. So the fire dept rolls my bike off to the side and after the reports were made my wife took me home go get my truck. I called a couple of friends and picked up a trailer to go retrieve the bike. The left side is pretty bent up. Saddle bag, both floor boards, crash bars front and rear, lower left fairing is obliterated, upper fairing is beat up, trunk or mounting is bent because it doesnt close too good and it is really off-center relative to the windshield, and my friends think the fork is bent slightly at the fender. So it is setting on a trailer in my garage and I guess I need to call the insurance company now. I hope it is totaled because I don't think I would have any confidence in it once repaired. Anyone need a new set of Michelin Commanders? I'll put them on the shelf until my next bike wears out a set. I nearly always ride with a helmet. About the only time I don't is when I am within my neighborhood. They work and I won't go out of the driveway now without one. Be Careful! Dennis
  4. Are there any members in the Souwest Florida area, Ft. Myers/Naples? I plan to ride down FT. Myers Beach for the week of 10/7-10/13. If anyone is interested in meeting up to ride a bit or grab a meal let me know. Dennis
  5. I Will Tell You After Owning 85 Venture And 2001 Springer Harley That After One Week Of Owning 2000 Mm Model Was Ready To Sell. I Have Corrected Riding Position On This Beast To Make Me Feel Confident In Riding This Bike And Maybe Giving Up My 85. I Have Tinnitus ( Ringing In Ears) And This Bike With 1/2 Helmet And The Motor Whine It Produces Almost Made Me Get Rid Of It. I Used A 3/4 Helmet And It Really Reduced Whine Noise I Hear With 1/2 Helmet. The Other Thing I Did To Make This Beast Not Feel So Heavy On My Skinny Arms Is Take Handle Bars Off And Press Them Wider. Went From 32" To 34 1/2" Wide And What A Difference In The Feel Of This Bike For My Long Arms. When I Purchased This Bike Compared To 85 And Harley Is That My Arms Felt Like They Were In Center Of Bike And Did Not Have The Leverage For Such A Top Heavy Bike. Will Even Say Pushing Bike Into Garage Is So Much Nicer With The Wider Bars And The Leverage The 2 1/2" Wider Gives. Will Tell You I Bought A New Bar But Was Way Off And So Decided To Spread The Stock One With Fear Of Kinking Bar. I Saw No Kinking With Flatening The Bar On Plywood. Will Also Say Do Not Go Any Farther Than This For Cable And Wires Just Make This Distance Of 34 1/2" Wide. I Am Really Thrilled With The Way This Has Changed The Feel Of The Bike And Give Me The Confidence . I Did Do A Panic Stop With Grilfriend Aboard And Scared The Hell Out Of Her But I Needed To Know I Had A Feel Of Confidence In Riding And Stopping after changes made.. The Beast Is So Top Heavy Compared To Any Other BikeS I Have Owned.. But The Ride And Looks Of This Bike Are Beautiful. But You Have To Ride The Level And Speed The Bike Is Geared For..this Bike Is Know 85 Venture But My Girlfriend Loves The Ride Over 85 Venture And My Harley Springer...lol I Know Every One Will Not Agree With How I Feel But This Has Made The Bike That Much Nicer For Me And Wanted To Share My Findings Of This Bike In One Week Of Owning It. 6. Last evening at the community pig roast there was another one. A friend of mine who I used to ride with bruised and battle scared from a motorcycle accident. It's a shame that one of the most enjoyable past times ( riding a motorcycle) has to be so dangerous. The danger I'm talking about is circumstances beyond your control. Cagers,Deer, etc things that in a split second no amount of safety training or equipment can provide an escape. I have a level of confidence in my ability, and I rarely ride at night to lower the deer incident probability, but cagers scare the #@^#* out of me. The things I see on the highway and people pull out in front of me in my company truck where is there mind. I often see vehicles going down the highway that are not safe to be on the road. And drivers sometime act like there stoned out of there mind. I've never had a broken bone ever but the fact is If I was to go down and be laid up for a year. I would loose my job, only have 5 available sick days per year with 120 hrs max carry over, and it wouldn't take long to exhaust everything I've saved for 30 years. The scary thing is when I take a look at my down line of dependents. Wife, kids, grandkids, dad living next door. The quality of life for a lot of people would change. I enjoy a good test run once in a while but I'm glad I don't ride careless like I use to.Still a lot to think about.
  7. I spoke with Todd this afternoon via cellphone and he is doing fine! Actually, he's not far from home, after a full month on the road, driving his new truck (very old, actually!) with the Venture along for the ride in the back. We'll likely get a post from him later today or early tomorrow... Terry

    Rode a Victory today

The Victory shop close by the house had open house with bells and whistles and opportunity to ride them. Rode the Las Vegas model. Standard engine - 100 cu in, 85 hp, 110 ft/# torque. This bike is not your father's Oldsmobile. With those 6 speeds and wide power band, that thing scoots. Probably weighs half of my 1st gen, but anyhow. I liked that the driver pegs were way forward. Felt more comfortable than what I am used to. Satisfying rumble - the group I rode with went past a field of cows - they scampered away. Hope it did not impact too much on milk production! Great acceleration, fantastic brakes, nice ride. Not sure I love the looks, but the performance is impressive. Handles great in the twisties. Does not have any instruments other than speedometer. The gears clunk pretty hard when shifting. At $17K not ready to trade in my 87 VR....but holy cow what a nice ride!

  10. I am returning to riding after 26 years and a first time venture rider, just bought an 83 Venture and was out for my first ride Sunday in the mountains west on Denver. Unlike San Diego where the weather is much the same every day the weather in Denver is like the old joke “if you don’t like the weather just wait 15 minutes” So the ride started out Hot and Dry and ended Wet and Cold. I was very pleased with the fairing design with kept me very dry until visibility and traffic slowed me to about 35 MPH and the rain fell on the top cover being the wind screen. Water rolls to the lowest point which happens to be the front of the seat… So I got off the bike dry except for the outside of my knees and arms and looking like I wet my pants. So other than not riding in the rain does anyone have any words of wisdom for overcoming this interesting design “feature” Thanks in advance.

  13. Bought an '83 off eBay. It's in AZ near Flagstaff. Needs work; clutch master? according to previous owner. Picked up a master off eBay; planning a trip to pick it up. Plan A- ride the bus (20 hours), hop off, catch a ride to the place, swap out the clutch master, bleed the clutch & ride off into the sunrise. $ Plan B- drive out towing a trailer & #1 son, rest is the same except add a side trip to the Grand Canyon. $$ Plan C- catch someone driving east on I 40 with room on a trailer or in a pickup, pay for gas to haul it to OK. $ Plan D- pay to ship it to OK. $$$ I'm leaning toward plan A, but I'm an optimist. Plan B is more practical, and covers both likely scenarios- it runs well or it doesn't. Missed an opportunity for Plan C, but it could happen again. Thoughts? Maybe this oughtta be a poll...
  14. At exactly 64-68 mph, I get a clack-clack-clack sound from the right rear of bike. Approx. 120 times per minute. Can't find anything loose, speed specific, don't have anyone to ride next to me. It only does it at these speeds. Any ideas? New me880's w/2k on them, no bumps noticible on rear tire. I'm stumped!!! Thanks, Dan
  15. :detective:Well took the old gal in for her 8K service, and decided to replace the OEM tires, back one was getting that flat look and the tread was almost down to the wear indicators. It was like a last minute thought while i was there, and had to take what they had if i wanted to ride, this past weekend. Well i got the M880and will se for my self what happens. Anyway, i get home and park the bike, the 40 mile ride was really great bike handled a whol lot better. We after an Earlie morning No A/C service call I go around back to clean baby up for a ride and just happened to look at the front tire, to see what date code was on it, no biggie 2107 pretty new there, so im happy, then i take notice of a rotation arrow on the Rim, its pointing up, and the tire rotation is pointing down.... wheels turning in my head, like ok what isnt right here.... well the rim was put back on backwards... Needless to say i came unglued, and called the dealers service dept. . Now my feeling is Yamaha didnt go through the casting trouble for nothing, so it should be installed the right way with the arrow going in the forward direction of the bike. ... I was told it was ok, and that it was on there for speedo reasons, because that rim is used on other bikes. and that it was ok to ride like that. He couldnt change it because no mechanic was there to do that til tuesday. I was still leary and said there goes my weekend, or something like that, He then said hold on a second and it was like seconds and he was talking to some one, and when he came back he told me to bring the bike right up and they would change it. Now is there any concern with the rim? while in the show room i did go check out another Royal star, it was the Tour delux and the rim marking was in the right direction. Any thoughts.......
  16. My wife complains that it is hard for her to hold her head up against the wind. I have the stock hight windsheild and still have the stock clear lower wind screens on. I let my dad and mom ride the bike (they ride a HD with no windsheild) and my mom complained about the same thing. I wanted to cut my windsheild down but I am having second thoughts now. Does anyone know what causes this and what, if anything, I can do about it?
  17. When I first purchased my 85VR, I replaced my original fork springs with progressives. The spacer length is a key part of tuning your front suspension. I followed the recommendation supplied by Progressive in the information provided for the Venture Royale and ended up with setting the plastic spacer on each side to 1.25 inches. I prefer to use the "oil height" measurement method since you never can tell just how much oil has really drained out and you really want to end up with an accurate amount of oil in each tube since it does seriously affect ride quality. To set up your forks this way you need to take the weight off the front end (with a floor jack under the front of the engine). There is an excellent article in suspension tuning by Jack Chalais showing all the details of getting things out of the way to access the fork tubes. The "oil height" measurement must be done with the forks completely compressed and the springs removed. You can block under the front wheel to compress them, I prefer to take the wheel off and compress each one much more easily while still in the triple tree. Now the setting for the oil height following the Yamaha specification results in a 5.5 inch air space from the top of the fork tube to where it first touches the oil. A simple tape measure works great for this job. Just shine a light down the tube until the end of the tape hits the oil and check your measurement. When you're done, extend the fork tubes and install the springs. This makes the fork cap install easily, as there is very little pressure on the springs at this point. You only need to lightly tighten these caps as the pinch bolts lock these in very tight (Don't try to remove them without loosening the pinch bolts first). Put some silicone grease on the o-rings to keep a good air seal. Now the results of all this setup proved disappointing. Everything was set to spec but it rode very harsh and did not turn into corners without significant pressure on the bars. I even removed the air line from the compressor and left it open to the air so there would be no residual air pressure at all (the system retains some minimal pressure as long as it is hooked up, you can only get zero air pressure by removing it from the compressor). I decided to put a few miles on with these settings and next fork oil change do some tweaking. Before my ride to the White mountains this summer I drained the fork oil and set about reducing the plastic spacer height from 1.25 inches to 3/4 inch on each side. Others have used this setting and seem to have achieved a more comfortable ride quality. In addition to cutting the spacer I felt that I would also reduce the amount of fork oil in each tube. I put in about 375cc which resulted in an "oil height" of 6.5 inches, an inch lower in each fork than the recommended amount (400cc). I used 10wt Belray fork oil as my own personal preference. Dropping the oil height increases the depth of compressable air in each fork which changes the compression rate of the air shock effect. The net effect is you have a softer ride with the lower oil height. This is something to consider for anyone who is complaining of a harsh ride on the first generation Ventures. It would be good to know "how low you can go" to maintain adequate damping but 25cc seems to be in the safe zone (I put 4000km on through the Adirondacks, Green Mountains and White Mountains fully loaded and the VR handled like a sport bike). Now, I tested the bike with these settings (for the record I am an 185lb rider) and noted that it rode like a cadillac. No more bull riding with the Venture, hitting raised pavement at highway speeds (100km) no longer created bone jarring reverberations. Now, I anticipated that loaded, I may be a bit too soft for good stability, so I hooked up my front air line to the compressor again and left the setting at the normal residual amount just in case I might need some air when riding two up and loaded. The results this time were fabulous! Riding two up and fully loaded I never added air to the front more than the residual pressure in the system. The suspension was compliant and comfortable at all times, what a treat! Cornering was a whole new experience, as the Venture would fall into the corners through the White Mountains of NH with minimal effort and stand up coming out of a corner by simply rolling on the acceleration of the great V-4. This is the way a motorcycle should handle! I can't guarantee that this will work for another Venturer's bike, but when using progressives I highly recommend using the 3/4 inch setting to start and reduce length for soft or increase for hard. If you are still too harsh reduce you oil level (by the oil height method) and see if that does not put a smile on your face. If you're going to ride, it might as well be a good ride!
  18. Well we don't have may twisties near Dallas. FM 51 is a fun ride. Here is video: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6X78zSk7FM]YouTube - Carl KLR FM51[/ame] Mark
  19. Well till the wife can handle longer MC trips ,we will have to trailer a bit so I am building a trailer rack for the BEERCART. I have her worked up to 3-4 rides now , but going to Vogal is a bit longer on her , so we will trailer to Sleeperhawk's and Mechanic's house and ride scoot from there on . Now my MC/Ult. trailer is not large enough for both scoot and the BEERCART . So I'm in the process of building a rack to set the BC (BC = BEERCART) onto . Here are some photos of what I have accomplished so far . I still have to finish cleaning it up , finish the loading ramps , place a boat bow roller , hand crank wrinch , some minor bracing and paint . Should take a couple of more afternoons . The scoot will ride directly behind the BC . I had it on the trailer last night for adjustments and have 3-4 inches of clearence between it and the BC . By the way , if was just myself the scoot would not be trailers . I'm only doing this for the love of my wife ! But there will be no cage at Vogal . Gene
  20. Some of the members here know that my Aunt Vikki was in a motorcycle accident back in April in Reno, Nevada where She lived. She was riding Her HD Heritage when she was hit by a tire that came across the center devider on the freeway. She passed away while I was in Ft. Collins from her injuries. She was a remarkable woman, She gave me my first motorcycle ride 45 yrs ago and I was hooked. She was 75 when She passed and had been riding for over 50 yrs. She was the first woman in Nevada to get a motorcycle license. She was a member of the Blue Knights in Reno and was a member of the Reno Ramblers M.C. She had many friends in the Motorcycle community in Reno, the state of Nevada and the State of California. Today they had her service at Sparks Marina. I wasnt able to attend but my Mom did. She said there were over 2000 people there and Hundreds of Motorcycle's if not over a 1000. She carried a metal flask on Her bike with water where ever She went. They took the flask and filled it with Her ashes and after the service today they took Her for a final Ride. Wish I could of went for that final ride with you. I will miss seeing you riding that purple electra glide with the white seat. But dont worry we will ride together again one day. Love Ya Dooder
  21. Removed voyager kit and changed rear tire today. Greased splines, drive shaft, and rear axle. The brakes are new she should be ready to go. A test ride tomorrow. Plenty of bossing from mamamo see the pictures.
  22. I just finished the tune up and I purchased the Kuryakyn 6235. The web site states that the 6235 are for all Venture Royale. I have an 1984 VR and what I don't understand is that the grip on the left side seems to be too short and very loose when I put it on. The package says 6235 but could there have been an error in packaging or am I doing something wrong? Simply puting on by itself, there is a alot of play, then it comes up about 1" too short? Thank God I cut open the left side first...and just as I thought I could go for a ride tonight!!! :bang head: Anyone else run into this problem...or is it me again? The instructions talk of the spacer but from what I see and understand that is for if they are too long? It's a conspiracy for me not to take it for a ride!!!
  23. In another thread, I mentioned that I had taken the back roads headed towards Wendover. There is a morning or afternoon ride out west of Salt lake that I really enjoy. South on I15 to Bangerter to Redwood Road, South on Redwood to SR73 (Lehi Crossroads), West on SR73 through Cedar Fort and South to Fairfield. The Old Camp Floyd and Stagecoach Inn are real interesting If you are into Utah History. West through 5mile Pass Turning left at the Faust Cutoff. West and stop at the Pony Express Monument just to look around and mabey see some antelope. On to Faust Station (old railroad stop) and on to the Vernon Highway. South To Vernon and stop at a little place called the "Silver Sage Cafe". Very small but nice folks and Great food. Then head north to St. John (Ruch Valley) turn left through town to and over Johnson's Pass down through the farms into Skull Valley. Drops you onto the highway just north of Dugway Prooving Grounds. (large military post, very secret) Turn North for a nice ride to I80 and from there you can either head West to Wendover, East to Salt Lake City, or around the mountain to the Grantsville exit into Grantsville. I like to head into Grantsville Grab a little gas and head over to Tooele then south to Stockton and back to SR73 through 5mile Pass and back to Redwood road. Great 160-180 mile ride and alot of great roads where you can let the old girl run a little and wonderful desert sceenery. Have fun and ride safe. DJ
  24. The wife and I went out on a ride last week. I hit a pothole which made the forks bottom out soooooo I said enuff with this. So in the last few days i have replaced the fork seals because they were starting to weep, new brake pads on the front, AND put in a set of progressives. What a change!!! Now the forks are sturdy and the ride is much better. Might do a superbrace next year but for now I'm RIDING:322: Thanks to this site i have probably saved 500 bucks just by reading on how to fix it myself.
  25. Wish I had done it a long time ago. Ten bucks for a pack of springs from bike bandit. I got a new gasket too, the old one was very hard. The lever doesn't seem stiffer than the old one, but I couldn't get the clutch to slip. Used to slip above 1/2 throttle and 4000rpms. Now I may have to learn how to ride the bike all over again. Swap out only took 30 minutes. I left the bike on the side stand and didn't even lose any oil.
