  1. Like most thing mechanical, my change out of the rear brake pads has gone to crap. 3 of the 4 pistons pushed right in, but I have one that I can not get to move. I think I messed up the old pads trying to compress the piston and the new one will not go in. Tips / Advice? I started to torch it and file an insurance claim.
  2. Blacked out the fender tips, rear floorboards, rear crashbars, bag hinges, whindshield trim, trunk lock trim, and a few more pieces because I thought it had too much chrome. OK so then I wanted to put this pic as my sig but it is too large. So take a look and then tell me how to reduce it or just reduce it for me if you are a moderater and have the power.
  3. Hi y'all, When I pulled the rear wheel on my Venture the inner race of the needle bearing on the LH side fell out, exposing the needles. I want to clean up the bearing and put in fresh grease. However, I can't get the needle bearing and its cup (outer race) out of the wheel without damaging it. Any ideas on how to clean the bearing while installed in the wheel? I wonder why Yamaha elected to use a needle bearing there instead of a sealed ball bearing like on the other side? The rear wheel on my Virago has no needle bearing. Seems like a strange solution. Jeremy
  4. I di d a search to look fo ra MOd like this But i didnt find one. I s there a simple Mod that will Have the rear turning lamps come on with the brake light? I Saw a H/D the other day and hehad this done to his bike. It made it very noticable when braking.
  5. Went to Marcus Dairy in CT near the CT/NY boarder today. Big meet every Sunday morning there. Pulled in and parked next to an 08 then went walking the bikes (maybe 400 to 500). Went to front on building and seen two more 08's parked side by side. I've had mine for a year now and haven't seen but one on the road so see three at the same time actually parked was cool. Talked to all three of the owners and told them about this site. Sure hope they make it here. The pair at the front was two buddies who had bought their bikes together. I asked if either of them had done the leveling link yet and they not only told me no but that for the shorter of them the dealer had actually lowered the rear end. I asked him about the low speed handling and he was very descriptive (would quote him but this is a family site) about his feelings on that subject as said he was was getting sick and tired of dropping it in the parking lot. We talked a bit and I told him that instead of lower the rear end he should go back to the dealer and have them return it to stock height and then come here and learn how to drop the front end. After I got done explaining how the geometry was made worse by dropping the rear end I thought his buddy was going to bust a gut. All he could do was bust his chops about letting the dealer do the exact opposite of what needed to be done to get the results he really wanted. Got a feeling these guys will fit right in here. Sure hope they show up here and get it right. This is to great a ride to let something like that discourage someone from owning one.
  6. Anybody in here with first gens with sidecars? My knees have gotten so bad it's getting real hard and painful to get around. I want to build a sidecar for my scoot to carry one of those electric power chairs on. I was hopping that I could see some pics of how they are mounted to a first gen. I think I've got the rest of it figured out. I just don't know how to mount it to the bike correctly. I was also a bit curious about haw far back to place the sidecar wheel. Would I put it inline with the rear wheel or closer to the front? If so, how much forward of the rear wheel? Thanx for any help in advance, Bill
  7. Just turn 20,000 miles on my 2005 RSV and decided to check the brake pads. Front pads looked new but rear pads were gone. My question is, are the front and rear brake linked and no front brake being applied, or am I just using to much rear brake???

Last night on my way home I saw a 2nd gen VR that was heading North out of Williston,ND. Beautiful scoot,Blue w/wolf murals on the rear of the saddlebags.Just curious if anyone my knows who this was. I believe the scoot was from Canada and the plate read ---nek.
  9. I have been having trouble with my Rear brake on my 83 venture. I had light brake pressure, but if I pump it up, it works fine for a while. So I rode the rest of last week with it that way because it was good weather. and It stops fine with just me on it. Yesterday I was riding to get something at the store and the rear brake was dead, no stopping if I pressed it, OK.. I'll limp home... two stops on the way home I instinctively press the brake pedal even though there is no brake... It worked on the last one but then did not release. I had to shove my toe under it and pry it back up. What could have caused the brake actuator to bind up like that? I have no leaks, no brake fluid on the pavement or on the bike. I'm going to disassemble the bike today to see further. the pedal it's self is loose, the linkage to the master is stiff moving in or out.
  10. When using the linked brake on my 84 Venture after a few seconds of normal braking it begins to pulse similar to a warped rotor. I have replaced the pads and bled the front and rear and the Antidive and the problem continues. I have checked the runout on the rotors and it is less than 1/2 a millimeter on the front and almost none on the rear. Any suggestions? Is it possible that the rear master cylinder return hole is partially plugged ? My next step is disconnecting the front caliper to see if the rear alone is OK. Rick
  11. I am going on a overnight weekend trip and would like to change the rear drive train oil today sense its been a little over a year sense I have had it done. I have done it myself on my old 2001 Suzuki Volusia but haven’t tried changing it myself on my venture I usually let the dealer handle it. I am at work right now and don’t have access to the owners manual to figure out what type of oil to get for it on my way home. Can some one please post a walk through on how to change the rear drive train oil and what oil is best to use?
  12. Just got back from an excellent trip to Tombstone. Took in the Grand Canyon on the way down...saw 2 RSV's there but didn't fine the owners. Wanted to ask them if they were members here. Anyways, spent 3 days down in Tombstone...a lot of very interesting history. Also took in the Pima Air Museum in Tuscon, Hoover Dam, Vegas, etc. on the way back:scorched:. The bike ran great. By Phoenix I noticed the rear brake was feeling & sounding funny, so I kept my fingers crossed & hoped there was enough pad to get me home to Canada. By the time I got home, the inside pad was completely worn down and I did have to replace the rotor...OUCH! The front brakes were still in excellent condition. This happened at 41000 kms. (approx.25000 mi) Oh well......I know I probably use the rear brake more on this bike to alleviate front end dive. Even with 5 psi in the forks, it still is a heavy front end. Is it common for the rear brake pads to wear out at this mileage? Oh, and I almost forgot... only 1 bolt managed to escape from the bike....one of the passenger flootboard bolts. Not bad, eh!!!
  13. I've spent the better part of the night trying to bleed these blasted rear brakes! Fluid will seep out all bleeders but will not build pressure. There's no telling how many brakes I've bled but this is the first that wore me completely out. I retired at 50 so I could spend my golden years riding...not bleeding brakes. Any suggestions? P-L-E-A-S-E.................
  14. Hey guys, I just had my rear tire changed by a shop down the street from where I work( I dropped it off because I did not have time to pull off the tire myself). Since the tire was changed I have a rubbing/squeeking noise when the bike is pushed backwards and it is there a little when going forward. It sounds like it is definitely coming from where the diff connects to the tire. There is no clicking noise and I have looked at the brakes and it is not coming from there. I was wondering if anyone had any Idea what they could have screwed up between the diff and the tire. I cannot think of anything in there that could cause this. I also drained the rear end oil and it is clean so I don't think it is in the rear diff. I am going into work early tomorrow to pull the tire and I was hoping someone might give me a tip on what to look for. I have pulled the tire before and it went back together no problem, so i can't think of anything in there that could be out of place. everything on the outside looks good nut on shaft is tight and spacer is installed correctly on right side. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
  15. Tech question, I have discovered that the rear master cylinder needed to be rebuilt. I decided to remove the reservoir and clean it out. I have never touch this but to add fluid as I bleed the system. There was crude in the tank, but I had one heck of a time getting the lid off of it. The previous owner, back in 1989 somewhere there abouts, took it apart and stuffed the rubber diaphram down into the reservoir. I don't think it will ever get back into a usable shape again. Is this needed for the system to function properly?? Oh, forgot to add, the reservoir was glued shut with something. I did manage to get it open, and I didn;t brake it. Do I need it? Or is there something that will work? I did see that there is a groove in the lid and the top of the reservoir for venting I guess and to allow the diaphram to expand as the fluid level drops. Will a thin rubber gasket work? joe
  16. Hi - Probably dumb question - if I jack the bike up level, just high enough so the rear tire is barely grounded or say 1/4 inch off the ground, can I change the rear shock assy without removing the rear fender and rear wheel like the maintenance book says? Or do I have to take everything off to do it? Help appreciated! Thanks!
  17. Ok, so heres the thing, My father built a custom out of an 83 Venture http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=170870#post170870 he bartered out of his brother in-law, in the process he took off a bunch of heavy stuff and said I could sell it since I am in between jobs as long as I put the money towards remodeling my house.. I sold the radio amp assembly but the guy needed the handlebar switch.. I cannot imagine how big of a pain in the ass it would have been for me to disassemble the fairing and dig into the wiring harness to get this switch off intact, but my Dad did it and only asked that the guy pay another 20 bucks.. what a guy! Now I have sold the rear shock, compressor, and suspension control to this guy building a custom in Shreveport La. http://71.18.95.71/ and he wants the female plug that goes with it, you should also know that this has taken me untold hours of my time between posting the ad, posting it on e-bay, shipping the item, negotiating on phone calls and e-mails about this particular part I sold for 150$... I assured the guy I would try to get the plug(s) for his project off of the donor bike but I also told him it may be too much to ask to try and get the connecting wire as it may be entwined in the wiring harness like the scenario with the radio... So my question is... Does anyone here have any helpful information on the electronic air suspension control assembly? He needs the connecting wire and Plugs between the control and the compressor.. Please advise Oh and BTW I have the rear bags with hardware (no key), front and rear fender(s), handlebars and a few other items for sale as well...
  18. hi guys, what size are the speakers in the front and rear of the Venture (2006)? Cheers
  19. I hope someone out there can help. My 89 VR rear brake didn't let all the way off after an emergency stop. It heated up to the point it pulled the bike to a stop about 3 miles later. I have I have rebuilt the caliber and it looks good, no rust or pits. Next I took the master cyclinder off and thought I had found it stuck. I freed it up and worked it off and on all day by hand. it had good return every time. I put it back on bike and used it to fill the left front caliber. When I went to fill the rear caliber the peddle would not go down at all, even with the rear caliber line unhooked. Question? Does the metering valve under the fairing have a slider valve that isolates the front caliber from the rear, like cars used to have, or is it a proportioning? I have read all the post I can find, and I don't see any mention of the metering valve I appreciate any info, Thanks
  20. Searching for a rear tire to replace the rear tire on Royal Star. Probably go back with the same Metzler sz style etc as was on there. Called local dealer to see what they would charge and they were $20-30 higher than what I was finding them online. But in his best sales pitch the parts guy says, "the ones you get for that price online are blemished or seconds". So I thought I have bought alot of tires from dealers online and have never had any problems with them. But now the seeds are sown and it makes me wonder. I thought if a tire was a blem or second it had to be noted and marked that way. Any one ever had a problem ordering a tire online? SS
  21. Just turned 12K on Avon Rear. Measured the Tread Depth that is left this afternoon. Between 1/16 and 1/8 Inch left dead Center. I will call it 3/32nds So another 2000 miles to go, should make 14K. Tire seems to be wearing even, still looks good. I measured it at 1/8 inch tread, left before I went on the Reno Trip, on 2 July. 2200 miles took off 1/32nd worth of rubber. Rideing Single, about 60 lb. luggage. If anybody is interested. Will be replaceing with an Elite III, Its sitting on the garage floor.
  22. My 89 VR is beginning to give an intermitant scraping in the rear brake. I'm not sure what starts it, maybe bumps in the road, or what makes it go away again. It is still there with the clutch disengaged, but goes away when the brake foot peddle is applied, returns when the peddle is released. The rotar doesn't feel scared, and the caliper assembly feels solidly attached. Is it likely just pads worn out? Is there anything else I should be looking at when I start taking it apart. I've got the rear caliper schematic so feel free to quote ref. #'s if you want. As well, any suggestions for after market or well priced brake parts online?
  23. Anyone know where I can get a good rear shock for my '99 Tour Deluxe?. It's the one that's mounted horizontially . it looks like a canister and when the bike settles down,or lowers, the piston comes out of the end of the canister.
  24. This is probably dumb, but here goes. I purchased a used 97 RSTD (XVZ13AT) this spring from a young gentleman living in St Paul MN. The bike was originally sold new from a dealership in White Bear Lake MN as evidenced by stickers and the service records. Interestingly enough, the VIN indicates it is a California model (JYA4NLCO) vs a USA model (JYA4NLEO). Sure enough, when I crawled under the bike, there was the little "time bomb" (charcoal canister for evaporative control of the fuel system) attached to the left of the rear shock. This along with my Clymer manual tends to suggest that this is indeed a model intended for sale in California. Has anyone else run into a California certified model of this vintage originating in states other then California? Other then making adjustment of the preload on the rear suspension a little more "interesting" ,are there any maintenance issues I would need to watch for in the future (vs the 48 state model)? The bike is great, having just turned over 14,000 miles. I rode a 200 mile run with 350 other bikers this weekend commemorating 3 fallen solders from our area communities. No trouble leaving those famous V-Twins manufactured in Wisconsin in my rearview mirror when "turning up the wick" a bit!
  25. Rode up Lookout Mtn. over the weekend. Just installed new pads on the rear, cleaned the calipers, etc. Refilled the fluids. Halfway down the mountain, NO rear brakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now its tough turning hard left or right, 30-40 degrees inclined down with the front brakes only! Sure changes the dynamics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any idea as to where to start to look? This happened once before? Once the rears sat for a bit, I could pump them back up, but got kinda hairy there for awhile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
