  1. Recently bought an 05 RSTD and would like suggestions on how/where to mount a power outlet. I am starting a crosscountry post retirement trip on July 14th and would like to get one put on so I can recharge my cell. Thanks in advance for all your help. warrenstar

  3. :confused24:I do not think I have this posting figured out yet. Computer illiterate I am told. Just bought a 05 RSV been riding it about two weeks seemed a little sluggish compared to 04 Silverado.Getting ready to go to Colorado on the 13th. Well lets get to the point. started bike yesterday and has no power front left bank is flooding and has no power Carried to shop in Abilene 5 weeks waiting list. They told me to drain carbs and tap on bowls.I have done this and changed spark plugs. Is running a little better still sluggish at slow speeds and flooding clears in higher gears until you slow down again.Setting on kickstand idels rough stand up straight idel gets better. Acts like cylinder loading up with fuel at low speed and clears as speed increases. Any help appreciated hate to ride Silvarado To Colorado next week. Thanks Bikerkwatt (B.A.C.A.Rolling Plains)
  4. Ran into some problems in El Paso with what seemed to be the ignition switch. Turned out was also the battery! But the battery wasn't acting like it was losing power. Anyway if any of you are ever in El Paso you have got to go by Sunland Yamaha. If you are in trouble there see these guys. They were about two weeks behind on service and because we were on the road Glen jumped on my venture and diagnosed the problem. And got us on the road in a couple of hours. Thanks again for everyone on here that helped. Sorry haven't gotten on here sooner but we just now got the power back on at the house. After the storms on Sunday here in Tulsa! Take care. SS
  5. Got a factory radio to put on the rig, checked it last nite with power, button #2 for preset is sunk down in, keeps unit from operating, power comes on, have some functionality, but no channel changing. Any tricks or ideas? If not, I'll have to go back to aftermarket setup for this weekend. Dan
  6. I am looking for some help with a problem I am having with my bike. I have an 84 venture. I was out for a ride with some guys and one of them suggested to me that they think my bike is only running on 3 cylinders. This did not come as too much of a shock to me as my dad had had the problem two years ago. (The bike was his) He took it in and they replaced the "ignition unit". He seemed to think that the problem was fixed. Being that I am a new rider I realy didn't notice any lose of power, the bike has run the same the whole time I have used it. What I am wondering is how do I know if it is only running on 3 cylinders and what should or can I do to try and fix it. I don't want to have replace that ignition unit again, it cost pops about a $1000 bucks. Also when riding the bike seems to ( for lack of a better discription ) cough when in 2 and 3 gear at about 3500rpm. It doesen't lose power or jerk or anything like that. It just makes a noise. Could this be related to the cylinder problem? Any help or suggestions would be greatly apreciated. Thanks in advace and ride safe.
  7. Amid all the other stuff going on around here, I did finally find a couple of hours to work on the bike today. Got the new Avons mounted on Thursday evening so that was done already. A while back, I switched from XM to Sirius and hadn't gotten around yet to redoing the power supply for the radio on the bike. So...I split the fairing an replaced the XM power cable with the Sirius. While I had things apart, I went ahead and replaced the Pioneer speakers with a pair of Polk DB401. I have a set for the rear also but am no hurry on them. Last year on the way to Vogel I lost one of my front lower air deflectors. I finally got around to ordering a new set of Diamond R Accessories polished stainless deflectors and they came today so I went ahead and installed them also. I tell you, I had seen these on some other bikes but had forgotten how nice they are. Truly quality work. So....the bike is ready I think. Only thing I haven't yet done this year is ...uh...actually ride it. Maybe tomorrow.
  8. Last month I was looking into heated clothing for the wife and also looking at power consumption on each brand . I ran across Wingstuff.com looking at the good deal for the Tour Master Senergy Heated Jacket liner . Of course her size is on backorder . Today I received a phone call from Wingstuff to let me know the status rather than an e-mail . That was nice of them and I considered it good customer service . Talking with them , I asked as there was no place that I found on how much power they drew . They let me know that they just placed a chart up on their site . I thought I would share it with you . http://www.wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/20174_Synergy_Motorcycle_Electric_Clothing_Sizing_Chart These liners use carbon fiber elements rather than wire elements that get better results . Here's a copy of the chart . BEER30
  9. No, not on the bike. I was pouring concrete at my house wed. with my wife and son helping. Just 7 yd. but the last half was getting tough to drag and I ended up on my knees. The knees began to hurt I thought from the rocks but when we got thru I could barely walk and when I changed pants, realized something worse had happened. Concrete has alkaline in it and I ended up with 2nd degree burns on my knees and about 5 inches down my legs. So needless to say I have been in some pain the last few days and haven't been on the site. Not only that but wed. eve. we had tornados and the power was off until last night. One neigobor lost a roof and a trailer destroyed down the road with a lot of trees and power lines down. Anyway that's enough crying on your shoulders, it's getting better, according to the doc it could have been a lot worse.
  10. To make a long story short, I now own a Goldwing. Never fear, I have not deserted the RSTD. It is beatifully repaired, the man a Paragon Customs did an awesome job. Anyway, I met a man that had an 03 Goldwing for sale and he asked me what I would give him for it. I gave him a very low number and he took it. Could have knocked me over with a feather....so I had to write a check. Well yesterday Linda and I were out on the bikes, (she has an 05 GW) and I took out mine for the first time. In some respects it is a fantastic machine...in others it is a dud. I liked the power and torque...get on it at 30 mph in 5th gear and it just goes. The brakes are great and it handles well. Has great CB and am/fm radio. Good wind protection and great storage capcity. Mine has highway foot rests (I will get pics) and no matter how I move around, I just can't seam to get real comfortable. Then it dawned on me...this bike is cramped...maybe I have to get used to it. The long and short of it is...I can see why people like the Venture's and the RSTD's...they are roomy, comfortable bikes that are fun to ride. If mama Yama would make a few improvements...they could blow the bags off of Goldwings. Better electronics, fuel injection, better lights and electrical capacity, and way better brakes....I am satisfied with the power on the RSTD and the handling. The RSTD is way easier to work on. I put a new air cleaner on the GW and it is a LOT of work! NOBODY should ever feal inadequate riding next to a GW...they are not perfect and need some improving ,too. Mybe I'll keep it, maybe I won't. Just my first impressions
  11. any information about LED's that can be used to replace "peanut bulbs" for some of the aftermarket 1st gen lights. I dont know that I have ever seen anything like what I'm describing. I have to ease the power consumption that the bulbs take and I'm curious to know if there are direct replacements that will fit into the exsisting bulb receptacles.....Thanks for any guidance
  12. This is a waterproof XM radio. I've thought about getting one of these for awhile but since it's a Harley product, the price is a ridiculous $250.00. I found this one used on E-Bay for $75.00. The guy switched to Sirius. http://buzznet-86.vo.llnwd.net/assets/users16/marinerfan/default/Road_Tech_Radio_004--large-msg-120942759465.jpg He didn't have the handlebar mount since it was attached to his fairing. It was perfect for me since I already had a Hoon hardware mount for my Delphi Roady 2. http://buzznet-58.vo.llnwd.net/assets/users16/marinerfan/default/XM_Radio_002--large-msg-120896983532.jpg It has a built in 1/8" audio output jack so that is perfect. The power supply had a plug but the owner had cut it. He included the plug but it didn't work for me anyway. I simply hooked it up to 12 volt switched power and everything worked great. I must say that it's a very nice unit. Totally waterproof and has big buttons so that you can use it with gloves. I think price of a new unit is too high, but if you can find a used one like I did, it's money well spent.
  13. Read the thread stating any available brown wire is a switched power wire. I've added the amp and some lights to the fender bolts. Got the tank off and power run to the lovely relays. Now I just need switched power. Tap the headlight wire? Or something convenient? The Yamma instructions for adding lights don't give me a warm fuzzy.
  14. I am at a buddies place trying to help him out. He has a 99 RSV. Had his bike idling and all of a sudden it stopped. Now he has no power. No lights,,,, nothing. Checked battery and it is fully charged showing 12.9 volts. Disconnected ALL accessories. ZIP, NOTHING. HELP! What should I be looking for??? Thanks Thor (Greg)
  15. Is there a good thread on here to help understand/diagnose the leveling system on the first gen. I get nothing from mine, no lights, no noise, nothing. I suppose the place to start is, is it getting power? Thanks D
  16. My passing lights and my Sebler horn are both out! With the passing lights I hear the soleniod click when I push the switch, but they do not come on! Any ideas on what could be the issue. I checked all fuses and they all look great. The passing lights are power off the front receptical and the horn is power from the circuit going to the rear receptical (if I had one). Any ideas or thought would be great. Thanks BikerJohn
  17. Been home a couple weeks, and with the nicer weather, decided it was time to get the second gear issue taken care of before riding season got into full swing. Spent yesterday afternoon stripping the scoot and hauling out the power pack. Then spent a couple hours in the garage stripping the power pack down, and cleaning the parts. When I had the drive shaft in the parts bath, after I'd gotten all the old grease off her, something didn't quite look right. Under closer inspection, I found that the teeth on the rear of the shaft looked like an ol' Inuit women's smile, half of the teeth were gone. It looks like every tooth is half worn out. So now I'm in the hunt for a replacement drive shaft. Will check with the local cycle salvage yards, but thought I'd post with the real experts and see if anyone has a spare that they'd let go cheap. 84 Venture Royale. Ozzie
  18. Anybody have any tips on how to get more power out of a '99 Tour Deluxe? And can a VMax engine go in these bikes? Thanks
  19. I'd like to hard wire the power source for my XM, and i've searched a couple ways to do it that look straight forward. My question is, the power cord that I have now indicates 5vdc, is there some sort of resistor in the cigarette adapter that lowers the voltage to the unit, or is that just a minimum and will run off 12vdc no problem? Thanks Joe

    Hey Condor

OK, Jack! Here are the pics of how I mounted my GPS holder. It took me a while to borrow a camera. (No, I didn't take them 01/01/08! I just changed the batteries!) This is on the left handlebar and I just used two zip ties. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/gps4.jpg I'm running out of room! The leather thing is my bottle/cup holder that I made from an old UPS belt. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/gps1.jpg For power I plugged into a power outlet that I have hanging in the fairing by the radios and ran the cord up through the louvered side piece. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/gps3.jpg The unit just snaps in. I mounted this just before my trip last summer so it has lasted over12k miles. It hasn't even rotated or slipped any. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/TMagEnterprises/Extra%20Junk/gps2.jpg It is also easy to glance at in the twisties to see how much curve you're getting into! I don't like the built in position on the Gold Wing, you have to look too far off the road.
  21. I have looked around and have not seen a specific write-up for the install of heated grips for the RSTD. So I thought that I would take a crack at writing something up based on my recent experience. The first thing that I did in preparation for this install was wire up a relay and terminal strip that I could use for power. I wanted power not just for this install but for future electrical accessories (lights, GPS, and communication system). I found great set of instructions for this at the Canyon Chasers site. Attached is a picture of how I installed mine under the seat (Relay.pdf). I tapped into an unused accessory plug that I assume is a leftover from the Venture wire harness. I tried to find something smaller than the terminal strip I used for distribution but it was inexpensive and it works. I have been unable to find the jumpers to energize the next terminal so I just made my own. I decided to retain the stock grips and install heaters from Dualstar. The price was a bargain (29.95 plus shipping) when comparing different heated grip systems. I struggled for a long time with where to install a switch. I didn’t want to spend much money on anything fancy, I didn’t want any bulky box or pod for switches and the RSTD doesn’t provide too many spaces to stick anything. I wanted something that was inconspicuous and settled on placing it in the plastic cover that conceals the frame and wiring that runs to the forks (Switch.pdf). I may regret this location because it isn’t easy to reach but I think the grips will be something I will not need to be flipping on and off frequently. If I am wrong with this location it will be easy enough to conceal and move on to something better when it comes to mind. The next challenge was getting the grips off. I took the counter weights off without a problem and used a small screwdriver and popsicle stick to pry loose the glue from the grips and worked them off. The next big surprise was the ridges on the throttle tube. I wasn’t expecting this and you must apply the heater to a smooth surface. With a lot of patience, a utility knife and a dremel I removed them and installed the heater element. The clutch side heater is about as simple as putting on a piece of tape and routing the wire down the bars. I did use the dremel to rework the chrome colar that goes with the grip to get a snug fit around the wires. I tested everything at this point and it was then that I ran into a snag. I had a short in the system. I called Dualstar. They helped me diagnose that the problem was on the clutch side and they sent a new one right away. They said they test every unit before it ships but I couldn’t see where I could have crimped or nicked anything thing to caused the problem. Regardless they took care of me. Moving on to terminating the wiring and powering things up… I had ran my power and ground from my terminal strip up under the tank to the switch and into the area under the chrome cowling that covers the speedometer display unit. Special Note: Removing that chrome cowling was a royal pain. It was held in place by three Philips screws that were installed with loctite and one head completely stripped out. Thanks heaven it was one on the out side, they are almost accessible. Had the center screw striped out I would still be standing in the garage swearing to myself wondering how to get it out. Needless to say I replaced the screws with Allen head bolts(Cowling.pdf). I soldered all my connections and put them in shrink-wrap tubing to keep things protected from vibration and the elements. The bundle of wires tucked up under the cowling neatly. I put things back they way they were and now I am waiting for the snow to melt and I can actually go for a ride. The heaters work great in the garage but I guess the big test will be in a few weeks when I can get out and go for a ride and see if they overcome the wind chill that my hands feel sticking outside the protection offered by the windscreen. Hope this helps any of you considering the install.
  22. Two questions. Switched or unswitched, your preferance? Is a power supply found in the front fairing or do I have to go all the way to the battery?
  23. As part of the upgrades on Mocha I decided to replace the CB antenna and split the Stero onto its own system. I used a 3ft Wilson black fiberglass whip. It is tipe tuneable and thin like the Firestick II. The mount is a Wilson H.D. version. It has a large allen bolt that runs up from the bottom to the base. I used a 90 degree coax adapter to put the cable along the factory arm. The cable was about 8ft. I loope the excess under the seat and tied it to the frame. I made sure not to form coils in the excess by looping in a figure 8. This keeps from inducing a magnetic field that might affect the signal. I had to also use a 90 deg. adapter under the CB. This allowed enough clearance for installation. The AM/FM antenna is now an amplified block style mounted inside the fairing just below the LH turn signal. It is very similar to the Dakota Digital model but I got it from Ebay for $25.00. The power draw is probably less than 1/4 amp. I grabbed power from the accessory fuse. The antenna matched out at 1.5:1 SWR on channels 1 and 40. I dont think I will get much better considering the ground plane of the bike. The amplified antenna seemed to be ok before the tuner crapped out. I will edit the post after a replacement tuner is installed. JB
  24. Hello, Over the last few months I added a pair of 55W driving lights and later heated grips which draw about 3 amps. I started having some battery-drain problems after the grips. Some testing last weekend confirmed that it seems the stock charging system is OK but pretty well maxed out with the lights, and the grips push it over the edge. It's OK under some conditions, but sometimes the voltage just won't go over 12.7 or so with all of it turned on. As I mentioned last week, I want to install LED's in the two front clearance lights and one of the brake light sockets to get back 1.7 amps. Also, I was dissatisfied with the fact that the headlight was getting 2 volts less than the system; with the bike charging at 14V the light only got 12V. This has a direct effect on brightness. As I had done on my Virago, a while back I installed relays for low and high beam to send battery power right to the light and bypass all the factory wiring, switches and connectors. I was rudely awakened to the fact that the Venture's lighting system was smarter than me and didn't like that. Last weekend I settled for gaining back some of that voltage. I installed one relay in the L/B wire to the RLU (check manual for explanation). Bike side of L/B activates my relay, and RLU side of that wire gets power from the relay. Relay draws power from battery - almost - explanation below. This bypasses the ignition and start switches, and gained about .8V. Finally, I had been powering relays off the batt pos post. However, looking at the diagrams, the factory setup puts the main 40A fuse right off the battery, then everything else after that. The highest voltage when running won't be at the battery but rather at the charging system with the main fuse being a potential source of voltage drop (minor point). At any rate, I decided it was more sound electrically to power any relays just downstream of the main fuse. My 2 cents :-) Jeremy
  25. Here is some information on the new engine that will be used in the '09 model VMAX. It makes me drool to think of this power plant in a new Venture. http://www.starvmax.com/News/V-Max-News/Inside-the-Next-Generation-VMax.html
