  1. My riding buddie (who happens to be computer illiterate) has a 1998 Tour Deluxe with right at 100,000 miles. This past summer while on short rides around our county roads his bike would without warning QUIT. This happened more than several times but only once required trailering home. The one time I was with him when it happened we had just left a restaurant (ice cream) and had traveled less than a mile and it died. Within 3 minutes and without any trouble shooting it started and ran beautiful the rest of the way home. All we did was let it sit with the key off for a couple minutes and it started and away we went. Because of this problem and at the recommendation of our 'factory' mechanic, the carbs were taken off and rebuilt. Sure made a heck of a difference in performance. I'm not sure if the tank was taken off and cleaned or not. I do believe the filter was changed. Unfortunately the dog-gone thing won't mis-behave while in the care of our local Yamaha shop. Any theories or similar circumstances happen to any of you ??

  4. I know that Pegscraper has a thread going about his 96, but not sure if that is all relative to my 2007. I have noticed that my clutch is slipping some lately, though it is only when the bike cold. Once she is warmed up and ridden for 5-10 minutes all is good. Then today it 'clunked' going into to 1st gear when I first took off (I had let it run for about 2 minutes before leaving). I didn't think a lot about until it 'clunked' going into 1st again tonight when I left work. Any thoughts on what is wrong and how to fix it? Should I change the fluid? DO I need new springs or what? BTW I have a little over 29k miles on it now.
  5. toys in the sun run 2008 part two about 5 minutes into the video:bowdown: www.youtube.com
  6. New to the forum and I have a question about my 2005 Midnight Venture. I have a 2005 Roadstar as well but these are totally different bikes! I've had the Venture for about a week now. When the Venture is cold it smokes a little out of the left exhaust pipe for about 1-2 minutes but as soon as it heats up its fine. The right side exhaust does not smoke but also does not warm up for almost 8-10 minutes. I can keep my hand at the exhaust pipe after 10 minutes and it is still not hot. I cannot do this on the left side exhaust. I also tried touching the exhaust pipe and I can do it on the right side but not on the left (after 10 minutes of run time). Should I be concerned? I am taking it to the dealer next week so they can transfer my warranty - I don't expect they will be much help.
  7. Today, for a Patriot Guard Mission, I rode over 220 miles in temps that hovered slightly above 20F. Never again am I gonna freeze my tail off like that on the road again! Ordered mahself a heated jacket liner and heated gloves within 20 minutes after getting home and thawing out. Now I have to figger how to make my scoot more safe/stabil on snow/ice.....
  8. Recently acquired a 2009 Venture I had to wait several weeks on. Looked everywhere for a manual to read while waiting for delivery. Found it here: http://labs.trunkful.com/LIT-11626-16-15_18.pdf Slow server takes four or five minutes to download. (Moderators: please delete this if it's common knowledge and already been posted.)
  9. Now I am not as dumb as a few minutes ago.
  10. Getting ready for a early morning trip; my oil warning light came on and the bike wouldnt start, a few minutes later she fired and then did it again- any thoughts?
  11. My wireless connection drops out 3 or 4 times a day. If I leave it alone for 5 minutes it will come back. Most of the time I just right click on repair connection and this fixes it. Once or twice a week the only way to get it back is reboot the router. My signal strength is excellent.Sometimes it will drop within minutes of being repaired. Another problem both my Dvd-Rom drive and my Dvd+RW/ Cd +RW drive have all but quit working. What I mean is they use to work on every dvd or cd I put in. Now they are very limited which ones work. Almost like limited to a certain file type. Drivers are good and drives clean. Any suggestions? This is a Sony Viao machine about 3 or 4 years old.
  12. have 2 problems with a 89 venture royale first, when bike is cold everything works great, after about 15 minutes the bike starts to miss,if i take bike off the sidestand then it runs fine, seems okay if im driving also the gear indicators only work in 3rd gear after bike runs about 15 minutes just wondering if it could be a sidestand problem, neutral switch or both
  13. I just had to post this. My wife and I are currently on vacation, riding the 99 RSV from Oklahoma, visiting our kids in Colorado. Well to make a long story even longer, we got as far as Fountain Colorado when I apparently got some air in my clutch line. No workie at all. Worked my way off the interstate and into a service station. I promise you I had not been there more than 3 minutes before another Venture Rider stopped and asked what the problem was, hopped off, grabbed his tool bag and went to work. Within 5 minutes, ANOTHER Venture Rider showed up and stopped to help. Looked like a convention. As luck would have it, we needed a tool that none of us had with us, so off he went back home and returned with all we needed. 30 minutes later and I am back on the road!!! So if anyone runs across Tim L. from Fountain Colorado, you just met a hell of a nice guy. I'm sorry I didn't get the name of the second rider, but my thanks go out to you too. You're never alone on a Venture.

  15. I have lost all power 2x now. Once while going 55 and once while parked and both after at least 15miles. I did not have power to anything either time. No headlights speedo etc no power to start the bike. Twenty minutes later all is good. I guess the igniton switch is bad and needs cleaning checking out. I suspected this or battery issues in previous thread and several members agreed it was ignition. I agree after seeing this again as it did it while parked. Turned the key on and off over and over and nothing. Then 20-25 minutes and I'm good to go. It appears that this may be a heat issue. Perhaps the driving lights are wired thru switch causing it to heat up? I reviewed what I can find on this site about the ignition switch issue but find that the temp fix thread is dead. Another person mentions a site (bukeyes perf) but I did nto see the part there. Can someone point me to the fix for the temp fix and explain why I should use it and secondly does anyone have directions on removing the switch. I was told to move the tank back and that there is a security bolts to deal with while another mentioned that he took his off without moving the tank and took 15 minutes. Can someone clarify before I start this week? Any help would be appreciated. Jb
  16. Last Saturday I ended up stuck on the roadside due to an error on my part. Now no one was hurt the bike is fine but I did come out of it with a lesson learned thing. When I called Yamaha Roadside Assistance for a tow truck to pick up my bike and I found them to be very helpful. I called around noon and received a call back around 12:20 telling me the truck would be there in 45 minutes to an Hour which wasn't bad time wise I thought. After them I call my wife and told her of the problem and she said she would be there in about the same time. Well my wife shows up and I get in the car, it was around 80 out and a nice clear sunny day, we were talking for a while and I look at the clock and it's around 2:00 pm and no tow truck and so I figured call Yamaha back and see what is going on, "Sorry all out operators are busy at the moment....", so I plugged the cell phone into the charger and let it sit there as I don't want to loose my place in line and after 30 minutes I gave up. So now it's around 2:30 and still no truck so I call 411 get the dealers number and call them. They tell me that yes Yamaha did contact them but the towing is handled by someone else and they don't know who. So I get out of the car ask my wife to go to the next exit get me some water because I stopped sweating around an hour ago, remember it's 80 and no clouds in the sky, so she takes off and comes back around 10 minutes later with water and a sub (reminder to self "always put at least 2 bottles of water in saddle bag before going out"). I tried Yamaha and still "All lines are busy..." I get out of the car walk around for a bit and get back in the car it is now around 3:10 and still no truck. My wife says try them again and I just give her one of those why bother looks so she tries and you know it gets right through. Well the lady who answered the call asks whats the problem and I explained in a calm tone that I called in around 12 and received a call back around 12:20 that the truck would be there in 45 minutes to an hour. She asks me what time is it now where you are and I said 3:15 and all I here is "Oh my god sir I am so sorry. Let me see what the hold up is and I'll get right back to you.". So I figure ok here we go she is going to hang up and call me back in an hour or not at all but nope she puts me on hold so now I'm thinking ok I'll be on hold until either I get board or the call gets "dropped" well wrong on 2 counts. She is back to me in less then 2 minutes and tells me she is sorry for the delay and a truck will be there in 15 - 20 minutes. She again apologies for the delay and tells me what happened. The guy who originally took the call screwed up on the case # and never sent the confirm fax to the tow company. Now after a while the tow company calls Yamaha back gives the case # and is told that is not a valid case # and closes the call. My question to her was why didn't anyone call me back asking if the truck showed or to even verify the ticket. She said that was her # 1 question also it seems she is a shift supervisor who was working random calls and she was upset that this even happened and we parted on good terms. Well the truck shows up in 15 minutes and it's a tow truck not a flat bed. Now I'm looking at this thinking either this guy is real good or he is upset with his boss and does not care about the damage to the bike. Well he gets out of the truck and starts right away about how Yamaha has screwed him twice today and I told him I know the whole story and that I also know that it had nothing to do with him. Well he has me move the bike so he can hook it up and I'm watching him. This guy was good, he put a sling around the steering head up through the inside of the handlebars and the other sling between the saddle bags and through the tire. He then unhooks the 2 cables from the sling on the truck runs the boom out and connects each cable to each sling and lifts the bike. He them retracts the boom sets the bike on the "T" bar straps the tires on the bike to the "T" bar and then ties the "T" bar to the truck and lifts the bike up just to snug everything up. We made it to the Dealer, Hudson Cycle Center in NH, with 1 minute to spare, they close at 4 we got there at 3:59. The guys at Hudson are a great bunch and they had the bike back to me in no time after the replacement seal got there. The problem with the bike... I re-jetted the carbs and pinched off the crankcase vent when I put it back together and blew a seal and it was a lesson learned... Check everything as you reassemble and do a short trip around the block a few times to check things out before going out riding!!!
  17. Published Wed, May 28, 2008 8:44 AM COLUMBIA, S.C. South Carolina has joined six other states that let motorcyclists, mo-ped drivers and bicyclists run red lights that don't change within a couple minutes of their stopping. Gov. Mark Sanford signed the bill into law Tuesday. It requires motorcyclists, mo-peds and bicycles to stop for two minutes before entering an intersection if a traffic signal has not turned green. Motorcyclists pushed the legislation because they said automatic signal controls using sensor embedded in roads don't always detect their bikes. The American Motorcyclist Association says Arkansas, Idaho, Minnesota, North Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin have similar laws.
  18. Sorry I haven't updated you lately. Since I cleaned the tank, filter, and carbs, my bike is running good. Still not the best, I know I can do better. However, I do have a curious question. Every once in a while, it will just lug and die. Kind of like it runs out of gas. but then after about 2 minutes, it starts right back up. ALSO, there are times that my lights dim really bad at low rpm but brighten right back up when I rev to about 1500 rpm. any ideas? Thanks Merlin
  19. Yea, I start it up and everything is good. After a couple of minutes the screen goes dark. I sure hope the monitor is not going out.
  20. If anyone remembers the Smokehouse Grill in Millbrook where we had an M&E a short time back, it burned. They had a kitchen fire that kind of took over and it took the fire dept 40 minutes to put the fire out. Too bad, they had good food and large accomodations for groups.
  21. I was on a ride last weekend and all of a sudden my audio went out. I was not happy but became even more unhappy when a few minutes later, the speedo started doing weird things and then went to 0 - even though I was on the freeway. Anyway, a couple of more minutes and the bike died. Battery was dead. I got a new battery and brought the bike home. When I got home, I check the batteries - both would hold a charge. Then I put one back in the bike - it started and ran fine. Then I checked the battery connectors while the bike was running - I read about 11.4 volts and slowly dropping. So, it appears as though the batteries are fine but are not being charged during riding. What do you folks think - stator? / regulator? or maybe a short? I've done a lot of work on my bike myself - but not tackled much in the electrical area. Any thoughts on how to check this would be appreciated. Thanks, George
  22. OK folks, I've had a number of requests for the small venturerider patches. I have been out of them for a while now. I am sorry for the delay but I did finally order then a few minutes ago. I should have them on hand again in about 3 weeks. Thanks for your patience.
  23. Yup they got here yesterday afternoon, so it was time to fire the bikes up, and let them idle for a couple of minutes, still have snow on the ground and a weeks worth of mud to deal with after that,
  24. I work in aviation here in Connecticut. Today we had nice weather (finally) and the company needed a part taken to JFK. No one else was available so I volunteered to run the part down to JFK. Went to the house and got the Evil Duck out and off I went to JFK. When I got there I pulled up to the departure area and called our personnel to come out and get the part. While waiting for them I got off the bike and just leaned against it listening to some tunes. I waited for about 15 minutes. During this time security was running off the cagers but they never once approached me. The person finally came out and I gave them what I had brought down. I asked him for the replacement part which he had of course he had forgotten. He said he would go get it and that I should wait right there. I told him okay but if security cam around and ran me off I would come back in about 15 minutes to look for him. I waited for about 20 more minutes, still just listening to tunes. Security never came up to me but was still running the cagers off. After about 20 minutes he came back with the part and told me the he knew why the security was not bothering me. I asked him why and he said "they think your are a police motorcycle". Now I was sitting there about 35 minutes now wearing a 3/4 helmet with a full shaded shield, my black leather chaps and a yellow and black winter riding coat listening to AC/DC etal at about 25 and they think I am a COP? Must have been the antennas and the mike on the helmet I guess. Got the biggest laugh out of that all the way back home. As I often say "cleverly disguised as a responsible adult (not)". Didn't know the disguise was THAT good. Moral of the story. If you want to park in front of an airport terminal waiting on someone for a long time, and not get harassed, take your Venture!
  25. The Moon started into hiding about 15 minutes ago and it's pretty cool! The lower left quarter is now missing. We have broken clouds here so it kind of comes and goes, disappearing a little more each time; it lends a bit of Lon Chaney feel to it! It's only supposed to last about 50 minutes and be a dark orange at it's peak.
