  1. I had an RSV from 1999 to 2003 for 48,000 miles. I never had any issues with the carbs gumming up during storage or getting badly out of balance. In the next few years I may buy another touring bike and really did like my Venture but I'm having a hard time with the thought of buying a new bike that isn't fuel injected. I had FI on my 02 Nomad and had no issues with it. But like I said I didn't have issues with the RSV either. My current bike is a Vulcan 1500 carb model. On that the carb doesn't bother me much because there is only 1 of them. The Venture has a lot of carbs to have issues with if you have issues. How expensive is it for a dealer to remove and clean the carbs if needed? On the Vulcan it cost $250 for a cleaning and rejetting. How common or rare is it for a RSV to have carb issues? Would you let it being carburated keep you from buying one in this day and age of most new bikes being injected?
  2. I got my first look of my new 90 Venture today. The CLASS seems like it’s not getting any power. Anyone know what fuse it runs off of and where that fuse is? I had the idea of running power directly from the battery to see if that fixes the problem. Would that cause any issues? Should I wire a fuse in between? I tried riding the bike, but it bottoms out on small dips in the road so I don’t think I can ride it home unless I can figure out something with the suspension. Thanks, Al
  3. Anyone here techno savey about PS 3's and the related issues with home entertainment? Got some issues with home audio?
  4. Buckeye Performance contact issues. Hurricane force winds cause area wide power outages. Yes, we got them here in Ohio! If you have orders pending or waiting of a quote or answer to a question we have no power and very limited Internet access. Please bare with me while we will work through this. It may be a few days before we have power.
  5. Just wondering if anyone out there owns an 09 Venture yet? Was wondering if Yamaha addressed the infamous chirping and whining problem, and if there are any other issues? Anyone hear anything? Thanks
  6. Hi All! I don't know whether this is the right place to post, or not... I apologize in advance for the length of the post. Anyway, I am looking at the possibility of buying a black 2002 Midnight Venture and am trying to learn a bit more about it. It is pretty well loaded chrome-wise but I don't think there have been any mods other than aftermarket exhaust (which I didn't like and would return to stock). The previous owner scooped out the seat and I would have to get an original since I am 6'3". Kury grips would replace the stockers. I have been riding a 2004 Roadstar for the past year and a half and have put quite a few miles on it. The Roadie is a great cruiser but lacks something for touring. Bag space, comfort and amenities ensure that any longer trips are solo - wife isn't happy riding any distance. The bike I'm considering has 36000 km on it (~23000 mi). Paint is in reasonable shape but needs a good buffing. Overall condition seems to be pretty good but I don't really know what to look for in terms of potential problems. The previous owner spent some money on bling but I don't think he really maintained it properly - maybe he didn't know how or just didn't bother. I'll be getting the service and warranty records from the dealer so I should be able to find out whether the appropriate routine service was done! It does make a bit of a ringing noise in the clutch area at certain RPMs but I understand that this is VERY common and not particularly a problem (other than an annoyance). 1) Is there any reasonable fix for the clutch noise? 2) How difficult is it to adjust the carbs (syncing etc)? 3) Any recommended aftermarket (non-cosmetic) improvements (i.e. the Roadstar benefited greatly with an aftermarket breather (Baron BAK) and rejetting) Anything similar for the Venture? 4) Any issues to look out for with respect to the engine, cooling system, shaft drive etc. (Major mechanical) 5) Suspension issues or bearings? 6) Specific maintenance issues other than the usual - brakes, tires, oil, chasis lube... 7) Comments regarding comfort, noise, vibration etc compared to the R* (or other tourers like the HD Ultra Classic) 8) How is the "fit" for distance riding for someone who is less compact than most? (Tall with long legs) Would highway pegs be an important addition? How's the amount of room for the passenger? 9) What's the nicest bit of bling to add? A new (to me) bike needs a little present to feel welcome in a new home! 10) Anything else I should know??? I really like the idea of a touring bike that still looks like a motorcycle. While a Wing may be in my future, it will wait for a few years! Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions. Also posted at Delphi - never hurts to get as wide a variety of opinions/comments as possible! Ross
  7. My Venture is a 1985 and I'd like to swap out the 1200cc engine with a 1300cc from a 1988 Venture. Are there any issues that would prevent the newer engine from working out OK? I think you all know why................
  8. I am dealing with suspension issues. Have an '88 VR purchased last August. Immediately I wasn't happy with suspension/ride...felt rough/'harsh' and bottoming out. I had a comparison bike in that my brother has an '85 VR..stock springs and rides very smoothly...and no bottoming out issues. So I replaced with progressives as many recommmend here...but still find a 'harsh' ride on sharp bumps and a sort of firm bouncy spongy action on other bumps. I have played with oil levels and different spring spacer thicknesses and tried no air to various air pressure settings....but can't seem to get improvement on my ride. I have had the forks off and apart and cleaned and done bushings and seals and dust seals. I have also added a fork brace. I use 10W fork oil. I weigh about 167 lbs. I even took the progressives out and went back to the OE springs to see if it was different/better but ended up putting progressives back in. As i said.....even now with everything i've done and tried.....the ride on my bike is not near the ride comfort level I feel on my bother's '85. Any help/suggestions/recommendations?? Am i missing something? Should i look elsewhere? I believe for this bike and weight of the bike...i should have a better level of ride comfort.
  9. I am looking at trading my VTX1800 for a 99 RSV. I need 2-up comfort and found someone who is wanting to go the other way so it will benefit us both without the hassle of selling and buying, etc. I don't see many of them on the road so I'm not that familiar with the bike. i have been looking through the site and have seen very few issues or problems. Anything I should be aware of on the RSV? Will the electrical system handle aux. lights, a communication system and heated clothing? How hard/costly is it to install the Vmax cams and how much benefit? Anything else I need to know? Thanks.
  10. This weekend did my 8000 mile service, change spark plugs, all the oils, and put on new E3. Now I am a die hard AVON fan, been using them for the last 3 years and no issues. But since I bought my 08 (hate the brickstones), I decided to try the E3. I will let you know what I think of them, today I will break them.
  11. I've got an 04 RSV and anyone who drives one knows the horn sounds like the cheapest thing Yamaha could find. Has anyone replaced theirs and were there any issues in changing it? How powerful of a horn can you install before there are some wiring issues?
  12. Took another long vacation? I got to get down there and get our 89. Wait maybe he took the 89? Looks like the 89 will be at Asheville. This 99 got some issues and just to much going on to do a rush job on the paint. The painter is leaving on vacation on his Harley anyway.
  13. I am riding a 2005 RSTD from WI back home to NC. I am doing this this coming Sunday 27, Monday 28, and Tuesday 29 if I need a third day. My route is from Madison, Bloomington, Indianapolis, Louisville, Charleston, Beckley, Wytheville, to final destination of China Grove which is near Charlotte. I would like to compile a list of riders that could be a in case of emergency contact if I run into problems along the way and offer any suggestions about issues along the route I have selected to come home. I mostly need to travel the interstate due to time but some minor route changes would be fine. This will be my first long distance trip and the first ride in quite some time. Thanks for any help and look forward to maybe running into a few members along the way.
  14. I just talked with a service tech supervisor at yamaha. He said that none of the items i have brought up are warranty issues. He said it is not unusual to have to replace rotors at some time - 34,000 miles and a heavy rider -- normal wear and tear issues. it is my fault they have worn so much and are well below factory specifications. - not covered lower farings - not a factory defect norrmal wear and tear not covered antenna - not covered rear-end whine not covered they are replacing the trunk lock though. I talked with two people at yamaha - Erika xt 7692 and her supervisor mark xt 7442 their attitude was so sorry to bad go away. Yes, i am frustrated, i have tried to get the brake issue dealt with since the first months. Anyone know of anyone else at yamaha i can call or deal with? please let me know if you do.
  15. I made a list of issues to be looked at on the 5 year warranty. Some of the things were common issues like a. front mounting brackets for the lower faring broken b. right bag hard to close and lock almost impossible to work c. whine in the rear end and a couple of other things d. front brakes pulsate e. cb antenna broken at ceramic spacer. The dealership told me these are all non-warranty issues. I called Yamaha and they said they would cover the lock but nothing else. I asked to talk to a sales manager and they said it would take 24 hours for them to return my call. All of these items are on record my warranty expires july 26 or there abouts. Can anyone offer further advise. I am the one that lost 5th gear a couple of years ago. Thanks mike
  16. I've turned off the Portal and some other things. Promise I will get it all ironed out laster this evening. HAVE to get to work right now. It will be OK. Just some typical configuration issues.
  17. Anyone have a sidecar mounted? Just hooked up a Motorvation Formula II and would like to hear how some of the hard steering issues have been solved. Thanks, labill
  18. As we discuss the issues on our beloved scoots, I often find myself wondering how many miles were on the affected bike at the time something happened to it. So, I thought a thread to tell us roughly how many miles were on our bikes might be in order. I'll start: 06 Black Cherry Venture 12,000 miles No issues to this point, just upgrades.
  19. Hello everyone" First of all i would like to say that you have a great site. So much information , a lot of great people. I have never posted anything online before so please bare with me i will get better at this. I h ave been a member on this sight for some time i just have not posted this because i didn't want to seem like i joined this sight just to benefit from other members knowledge. Last spring i purchased a 88 venture royale which i enjoyed all summer long putting a total of 7500 miles on. when purchased it had only 19,820 however there were quite a few small issues as the po did not take very good care of her. I live in janesville wi. and this winter we have had record snow fall and cold weather. So i have had plenty of time to adress many of these issues, I replaced tires metzler marathons, all gaskets for side covers, thermostat, gel battery, cleaned and inspected carbs, greased rear wheel to include hub, new rad hoses, plugs, wires cleaned all electrical connections and greased also spent a ton of money on cleaners and buffing wheels, to make engine cases look like chrome then cleared. Finally the reason for post. not havin another venture to compare i feel it runs well going down the road. When i first start the bike it appears to be starving for fuel. also it sounds like it is hitting on half the cyliders until good and warm if i leave the choke on for more than a minute it fouls the right front plug. while the others appear to be starving. i tried to sync and adjust carbs yet this appears to be fuel related. Also while idling warm or cold with light steady throttle the exhaust makes a pop pop pop sound. i have tried everything i know to correct this and it is getting the best of me. I have spent countless hours in the garage please help. also i have a fairly loud knoking sound coming from the clutch side when it is released and nothing while it is pulled in. clutch action is good i have replaced fluid and bled at the same time as new brakes and fluid change. thanks in advance sorry for long post and clutter. I will get some pics up soon once i learn how. she really is starting to look like a beautiful white venture. almost forgot i just got my new travelcade and set of rivco air horns!
  20. Actually....let's NOT talk politics. Here's the thing folks. I know that as we get closer and closer to the primaries and then the general election, it will get harder and harder to not get into political discussions here. I'm sorry folks, I just can't let that happen. Here is why. IT MAKES ME MAD That is the truth of the matter. I know that some of you really enjoy debating the virtues, or lack thereof, of the various candidates, issues, etc. I also know that most of us feel very strongly about our positions on these things. I can assure you that I am no exception. I am VERY political. I've actually written to my representatives about 25 times during the past 12 months alone. How many of you have taken the time to do that? I have strong opinions, I get very angry with some of the decisions made by those who are SUPPOSED to be representing the people and I make my voice heard loud and often. It does very little good but that along with voting is all that I am able to do. We can debate these issue here until the end of time and it will NOT change a thing. My political leanings are a result of things that I have seen and experienced during my 52 years on this earth. I am smart enough to read, research, investigate and form my own opinions about the issues. If I told each one of you that you could post 100 pages of political commentary and opinion, there is not a single one of you who could change my mind about what I believe and how I will cast my votes. As I said, my political beliefs are based upon my life happenings, not anything that I've heard from a politician, friend, news personality or anybody else. I think that most people are the same way. That being the case, what is there to gain by venting our anger, frustration, opinions here? I try to be very fair in the way that I run this site. I know that we have people that are Republicans, Democrats, Independents. I know that we have people of various races, religions, socio economic standings. We have people from various countries and cultures. We are NOT going to agree on politics and we are NOT going to persuade anybody else to think the same way that we do with the words that we can write here. I'll be honest with you about something else. If we start discussing politics here and I get involved, some of you are not going to like what I have to say. Whether I'm to the left or to the right, there are going to be some of you who lean the other way and there are going to be feelings hurt. I would much rather have as many of you as possible as friends....friendship based upon the thing that brings us together as a group... a club...a family. I am only human and as much as I try to be tolerant of those whom have opinions that differ from my own, I am not strong enough to always separate it. I do have close friends from different political parties and for the most part, I do respect them. I will also stand beside them and fight for their right to have those differing opinions. The truth is though, there are some specific issues that I just cannot understand how people can feel the way that they do. For that reason, I choose to NOT discuss political issues with most people because it could very well result in my loosing some respect for them and them for me. So that is the way that I feel. That is why we will continue to keep politics to a minimum here and I hope that you will all work with me to see that this rule is followed. If this site ever DOES turn political, I can promise you that it will be in support of MY political views and some of you wouldn't care for that at all.
  21. For the life of me I cant seem to recall if the front turn signal lights stay on all the time when running. I noticed them on for the first time today and now im wondering, especially since I have been having all these small electrical issues, are they supposed to be on all the time? Well??? Please help an old feeble minded bloke out.
  22. Hey all, I may be able to pick up an old 1100 Virago with starter and carb issues. Has new rear shocks, battery and solenoid. I am looking at it as a winter project and will sell it come spring. What sort of problems do these bikes have besides starter issues? Any comments or advice is welcome. Rick
  23. I am toying with getting one or the other. I really would like the 500, but have heard about the hard drive issues on a bike. It might be a little big but other than that has a lot of features. On the other hand, the 250 is a card reader, so doesn't have the hard drive issues but a lot less gps than the 500. My question is, who has either one, and what is your opinion of yours? BTW, $ is an issure, so the Zumo is out. Thanks, Steve
  24. My intercom has just begun to blink out at times. If I thump the stereo, it will come back on almost every time, but I usually just wait for the next bump in the road to kick it back on. It sure seems like a short, but I don't have a clue what's inside the stereo/intercom case. I looked under "Known Issues", but that is not yet restored since the site's crash. I have a new set of J&M phones/mics. Does anyone know what the problem might be & how I might fix it ??
