1. I was thinking about getting one of these. 120 Amp MIG/Flux Wire Welder with Wheels from Harbor Freight. I've never welded before. Is welding something that one can learn from a home video or should one attend a class or should it be left to someone that has been welding for a few years.
2. Making my second trip to Illinois this year...out of nowhere the rains came down! Same thing happened in June! If only that would happen in Texas! Other than the rain, it was a great ride...hoping for an equally good ride on the way home Monday.
3. i was born and raised in new england still live here , and after 50 plus years still havent learned the fall temps can drop rapidly. last sat was perfect day blue sky, 75f no humidity perfect lets go cruising!!! so i was getting little impatient with gf she puttin stuff in the bags gettin her jackets etc, an dumb ole me just itchin to ride. off we go beautiful rideing. after a few hours we go by a car dealer she wants to stop as she needs new car . OK well we are there for few hours by time we leave its 9 pm dark cold as hell. and about an hour away from home. she has her heavy leather coat, chaps gloves (you know the rest). im in light leather jacket no gloves shorty helmet no face mask etc. when we made it home all I heard was all the i told you so's as she broke my hands free from the grips, and rest of night was when will you learn to bring your stuff !!!
4. We seem to have lost Mrich12000 somewhere. His last known plans, to do summer trip to Ontario by bike, for his holiday. Both home & cell # seems to be inactive. He is a Diabetic. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/member.php?u=8938
5. So I decide to take a little ride tonight to enjoy the cooler weather. Made several stops along the way. No issues at any point. I stop at a little outdoor concert in Kingwood for about 30 minutes. Get back on the bike to head home, turn the key, the dash lights up for just a second then goes black!!! I check the kill switch, try a few more times. A couple more times it lights up for just a second or two. One of the times I quick hit the starter, but no go. I left it there and got a ride home from the wife. Now I'm going to head back with some tools. What should I be looking for? Battery has been on a battery tender off and on all summer. Can I try to jump it from my car??? Help!
6. A man left work one Friday afternoon. Instead of going home, he stayed out all weekend, spending his entire paycheck. When he came home Sunday Night, he was confronted by a very angry wife. Finally his wife stopped and said too him,"How would you like it if you didn't see me for a couple of days?" He said, "Fine with me." Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday went by and he didn't see his wife. Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye!!
7. It was running great for about 30 minutes. When I got a chance to hammer down and open her up I did. The power sure feels good. Then all of a sudden the VR was not as responsive and not as smooth. But it still ran ok up to speed. Got home and I started it up and felt the pressure at the exhaust. The right side seems to produce a little less pressure. It seem to start right up. Now before I started the ride I filled the tank and put about 5 oz of Seafoam for my plans are that when I got home I would fill the tank up again and put more Seafoam then it would pretty much sit for several months. Of course I would start it up to normal running temperture once a month. This is because I just purchased a 91 VR with less than 7000 miles on it. I was going to take all the accessories/goodies of my 89 VR and put them on the 91. So my troubleshooting plans are to do the following: 1) Pull each plug and see what the plugs tell. Put my backup set in, run the VR 2) The Seafoam may have loosen some carb gunk and so I was going to open the bowel drain screw. Then also unscrew the carb bowl drain plug. If anyone has some better trouble shooting suggestions, I'd be greatful.
8. ***SIGH*** PIP is over. Had a super great time, seeing a few old friends and making some new ones!! Followed Bubber home but he said he already had a dog and didn't need any more pets so we continued on the journey. Got out of Minnesota into Wisconsin and made it all the way to the same hotel we stayed at on the way down! Only difference is we are taking 3 days to get as far as we got in 2 days coming out here. Wisconsin is strange! They name their highways with letters instead of names! Also found a 8 3/4 Avenue! 8 3/4??? Why not 8.75?? What's up with a fraction in an avenue number??? Hoping to make the Indiana border by tomorrow evening...
9. http://www.polarisindustries.com/en-us/victory-motorcycles/touring/cross-country-tour/pages/features.aspx It looks like Victory has hit a home run on this one IMO. What do yall think?
10. I've been riding (at times off and on) for 34 years on 10 different bikes. I'd guesstimate I have close to 200K miles in that time. I've obviously had my share of close calls, and in fact I've been hit (slight bumps) three times quite a few years ago, but I have never been involved in an actual accident or gone down. Until Sunday afternoon... My 17 year-old son and I were headed to one of our local mountain areas to do some camping. I was towing our Cycle-Kamp trailer, and Matthew was riding what is now his Suzuki Boulevard C50T. It's only about a 150 mile ride, with the last 60 or so on Hwy 38, a scenic twisty mountain road. It was a nice sunny day, just very hot at the lower altitudes. It's not uncommon for a late afternoon thunder storm in the area, and we had seen the clouds indicating we may run into it, but I was hoping to miss it. But the rains did get us, and it was pouring down pretty good. Kind of a bummer to deal with, but certainly nothing new. Then it began to hail. The size of marbles, and it was coming down hard. And we were less than 10 miles from our campground. I was more concerned about my son, so I was looking for a suitable spot to pull off. I saw a potential area and started to slow down. I was going about 40 mph, on a slight decline and into a sweeping left curve. As I tapped the brakes, I felt what I think was the trailer probably coming around to the right behind me. Not necessarily jack knifing, but it was pushing the back of the bike to the left. I knew immediately I was in trouble, but for a second I thought I could correct it and ride it out. But I didn't. I went down to the right, and I came off the bike then, sliding about 40 or 50 feet. The bike apparently flipped over to the other side and slid a little more as well. I remember thinking to keep my head up and my hands up (I was wearing fingerless gloves), and I remember seeing me and the bike going towards a Chevy Tahoe coming the other way, and praying that he would stop. As I came to a stop I appeared to be unhurt and was able to get to my feet right away. Thankfully my son had been able to somehow stop safely, but he was a mess. I could hear him screaming as I was sliding along. Then I guess he didn't see me for a couple seconds, and he panicked even more. He came running to me balling, and just held on. He couldn't stop crying. The Tahoe not only had stopped, but he pulled across the road to block traffic. And several cars behind Matthew stopped. I had heard a woman in a car that was in the pull off saying "Oh my God, he's getting up!" The man driving the Tahoe came over to help me pick up the bike and push it to the side. At first glance the damage looked significant, and it was difficult to push. The floorboards were pushed up so I couldn't get it out of gear. Part of the coupler had actually broken, so we just had to remove the safety chains to separate the trailer. Once everything was off the road, I looked where it had all just happened. I was amazed at the conditions I was looking at. The hail was still coming down and the road appeared to be almost snow covered. Of course it stopped about that time, but it continued to pour down rain for another 20 or so minutes. And there was nowhere to take cover. I wanted to take some photos of the bike and road conditions, but I didn't want to ruin my phone. So here we were, on a mountain road 150 miles from home, in pouring rain, and with one bike unridable and a busted trailer. There are some awesome people in this world still. The couple in the Tahoe were those people for us that day. Steve and Kathy live in the mountain town of Bear City, and they were just out for a Sunday afternoon drive in the rain. They too were both soaked after helping me get the bike and trailer off the road. Steve told me he had a trailer and would be willing to go get it and trailer us into town, or even back down the mountain to the freeway. I humbly and thankfully accepted his offer. I had already contacted my brother that was going to head up to get us, but that was going to take a while. Steve and Kathy returned with their trailer in about 30 minutes, and we were able to load the RSV and the trailer onto it. By now they offered for us to come to their home to wait for my brother. Did I say these people are awesome? Once at their home, I made some phone calls. I cancelled my camping reservations, and notified family and friends about what had happened, but assuring everyone we were okay. I had to talk one of my daughters into staying put till we got home, she wanted to come up to make sure I was okay. We changed into dry clothes and Kathy even threw our wet ones in the dryer. And I inspected the bike more thoroughly. I must admit, I was now starting to feel some bruising, and the emotions were coming on. It was a bit of a scary ordeal. I have rambled on enough for now. I'm not sure, but I think the bike is totaled. I'll add to this later and include some details on the damage and some photos. I'm pretty bummed at the ruined camping trip and the potential loss of my bike, but I obviously have a lot to be thankful for. I am so thankful that it was me and not my son that went down. It was so hot when we left home, and I normally would have been without the jacket and wearing just a t-shirt. For some reason I wore my TourMaster mesh jacket, and it did do its job. I also tend to wear either my 3/4 or even half helmet in that kind of heat, but I had my full face modular helmet on. Not a scratch on the helmet, but you never know. Although the hail probably was the biggest cause of me going down, it also provided a slick "sheet" for me to slide along on. The Tahoe was able to stop on time. Kathy said from looking at me coming at them, she really thought I would be seriously hurt or even killed. Steve said he didn't know what to think as he saw me and the bike and trailer coming at him. Said it looked bad. I thank God I was not seriously hurt. And of course the kindness and hospitality that was given to us by Steve and Kathy. And thank you to all on here for letting me tell my story, and for all the kind words I know I will get.
11. Hello Everyone: We had been planning a ride back to our Daughter's home in Riverside WY. We dropped in on her on the way home from the Cody Rally. I envited a few local VR.org members Patrolman46 and Babe, Vstar1230 LoriB along with Roger and Lori H from the Venture Owners FB page along with a few others. Ended up with 9 riders on 7 bikes. Rode 600 miles over the weekend. Made more new friends. RogerII has join our group as a result of our trip. Proud to be a member here!!!
12. I just put some nasty boys on the venture Sunday. I rode it to work and back home, about 27 miles each way. When I got home I let it idol in the drive while I waited on my daughter. Well I noticed the coolant on the ground maybe about a couple of ounces not much but like she was running a little hot any ideas? The pipes had the baffles taken out when I bought them used. They. Sound great and she seems to run better just need the carbs synched. Thanks for any ideas
13. Beth and I made it home about an hour and half ago. Safe trip home and a good ride with Walter and Betty. Had a great time at Vogel and was great seeing everyone. Thanks again to Lewis and Charlene for all they do with this event and St. Judes.
14. We all made it home safe around six. Great to see everyone again. And another special thanks to Lew and Charlene!
15. We finally made it home at 3:45, should have been home sooner but, we had to do some vehicle swapping........Paula's Honda developed transmission problems. We had to stop and pull both our bikes off the trailer and put the Accord on the trailer. Jamie and I didnt get a chance to ride together at Vogel, but we did get to make the hot ride home together on the bikes. Its probalby was a good thing we took them off the trailer because when we backed Jamies off the trailer it went through a rotten board right where mine had been sitting. All in all it worked out pretty good, got the car home without a tow truck and we got to ride.

17. I am going to share a story with you about something that happened to me last week. That I only found out today what happened. That still scares the hell out of me. Last week I was out on the ocean fishing when I happened to look north and saw a storm heading my way. I headed toward Barneget Lighthouse inlet as fast as I could so I would be at least in the bay. Well unfortunately the storm caught up to me. I got to the bay and was still quite a way from home when out of nowhere a bolt of lightning went across the sky and the clap of thunder immediately followed. This scared me. Then two seconds later another bolt of lightning with the loudest noise I have heard in all my life. It sounded like it hit something directly behind me. This now terrified me which I thought I was literally going to sh** my pants. I didn't know what to do. I had to get off the bay NOW. I was almost going to head to land and just beach the boat till the storm passed. Well I decided to get the hell home ASAP full throttle toward home. I made it to my lagoon and jumped out of that boat the fastest I have ever did it. I MADE IT. HOME. YAY Well now we go ahead a few days. I was doing some pre-checks on the boat as I was going fishing again the next morning. Well the boat started like it always did but for some reason my GPS, Fish finder and gauges were not working. So I checked my wires and fuses but couldn't find anything wrong. I talked to my mechanic and he gave me a few things to check. I went home and started to inspect the boat again when lo and behold I found my problem. That last bolt of lightning HIT MY ANTENNA just above my head. Thank you God for watching over me. I still get the willies thinking about it let alone looking at the pictures. Check them out. WOW.

Deployment

Heading out in a few to see my 2 Sons ship out for their 14 month deployment, which will take them to Kuwait and Afghanistan. They will be together, and I told them they had BETTER look out for each other. They will be going to Ft. Bliss, Texas first, for some training, then go overseas. We are so proud of our boys, but also a little worried. I'm sure they will come home safe to us, but there's still that worry in the back of your head. I think it will do them some good, and make better men out of them.

20. OK so some of you might remember my DAD rapid rod starting a post about me loosing 5th gear 5 miles into my trip. I planned this trip for over a year and there was no way I was cancelling. What really took me by suprise is that I ride my bike at least 6 days a weeks. We got on the road leaving Las Vegas and I felt the tranny slip for a fraction of a second as I was passing a car in overdrive. After this tiny slip the bike kept driving fine but my gut told me something was going wrong. We continued to Sacramento CA about 500 miles away and as we entered town I felt the exact same slip but it was about a quarter second longer than the first slip I felt. The feeling in my stomach got worse. We went to dinner and I mentioned the slip to the guys and everyone kinda wrote it off as nerves, but like I said I ride the bike everywhere so I am pretty in tune with it at all times. I didnt get much sleep that night because this was bothering me so much. The next morning as we got on the freeway and I shifted into 5th....NADA. Was like I shifted into neutral. I thought the trip was over. Contacted my dad and he started doing research and said that as long as I stayed under 75 the bike would be fine until I got home. Well we rode 3,560 miles into Canada VIA the pacific coast. Rode the border and dropped into Glacier national park. Made it home with absolutely no problems. My bike had been averaging 32 mpg but on this trip I actually averaged 39mpg with a high of 44mpg????curious. now the task of finding out what went wrong. I am going to start ripping the bike apart and any advice would greatly be appreciated. The bike is a 2003 venture with 61000 miles on it and I ride it like a grandpa LOL very rarely do I push it hard so the tranny issue is puzzling. Thanks everyone.
21. Arrived home Sunday evening around 9:30PM from Cody, new (to us) Lees-ure Lite trailer in tow. Spent Monday just relaxin after 3 long riding days to get home. Thanks to all the organizers for a fantastic event!! Was great to see old friends and make new ones and to be able to put the "person" to the nickname. Was also a special ride to and from Cody with Sailor and Camos along with us. Thanks guys for your company and good times and thanks to Sailor for his patience with me and Camos during our many "butt" breaks LOL! Unfortunately I couldn't find a suitable place for any of the 3 cup holders on the scoot so they all went to someone else who could. pics to follow once I get them onto Photobucket sometime this week.
22. Well, the adventure is over for me, back home and so sad to see a recess until the next International Rally. It was great to meet so many of you, riding / eating / yakking, and from some, watching and learning as members fixed members bikes. I will never forget The awesome Chili Cookoff - with fabulous fish taco's / wraps thrown in. What started off in fun and maybe as a joke, became a fun way of sharing some good times: Jan/Carol/Dave, Terry/Erv, and Black Owl all did a stupendous job making everyone happy and full one night. The rides - short or long in length - were awesome, that is sure some pretty country around there and thank you to Kurt for putting the maps together. Thank you to Rocket for getting the ball rolling on this years trailer raffle Dave/Jan for all of their assistance from the shirt design and handling the shirt orders, and for the unselfish and generous assisting during the entire rally itself. TO ALL, who lent a hand at one point or another, to all that participated in our various "antics" (as I know I am probably missing some names), but most importantly TO ALL OF YOU WHO ATTENDED OUR RALLY THIS YEAR, IF I did this correctly, here are some pictures from my camera - I wish I had more, but - should remember to charge the battery once in a while? https://picasaweb.google.com/loneeagle101/VRInternationalCODYRally2011# Now, I guess the next question would be?????????????? Where is the Rally going to be next year?????????????????? Never too early to start thinking about it -
23. Well, I have 10 days off this month, and since my wife went up to Washington to see the grandkids, I planned on taking the bike up to Utah and having my Daughter and family bring her down. We would spend a few days visiting the other two sons and then ride home....Nice try. Now They are towing a pop up trailer down for us to pick up AND the 3 oldest grandkids are coming down to stay for a few weeks. Can you fit a 9,7,and 4 year old in the saddlebags? So I am Caging it to Utah and since I have to tow a tent trailer home, I can't even trailer the bike. I absolutely love my grandkids and look forward to every minute with them...BUT, I really was looking forward to enjoying the ride to and from on the bike.
24. It is amazing how you can leave home anticipating a great reunion with friends made, and the prospect of making new friends, have a fantastic time, ride till your seat is worn out, imbibe till the inhibitions drop away ( and then some), eat till your pant size needs to increase, win stuff to the point of embarrassment, appreciate the true quality of people we met and come home to find the world has not crashed, the garden grown, turkeys, goats and pets missed us. Thank you Venture riders for the fellowship and memories we have brought home with us and we certainly look forward to more opportunities. Teri n Erv
25. THANKS to Condor, Lone Eagle, and all the others responsible for organizing the BEST rally I've ever attended..!!!! We had such a great time getting to know some of the attendees. Quite a few we didn't get to know well, but you know how it is when you get sat down & get to shootin the $hI+ with somebody & don't get around. We were going to take a short ride to Cook City the 1st day, but I missed the turn & we ended up in Belfry, so we went to Red Lodge via the "Beartooth Highway", the #1 rated motorcycle ride in the US. It was beautiful & really fun to ride. Thanks to Lori for posting 20 photos that I reposted on my Facebook page. If you want to see them go to Facebook & friend me & you can look at the photos. Babe got into town about 7 & had dinner @ Adriano's. Great food Second day we just kind of vegged & rested. Babe & I went to the dinner & show @ Cody Cattle Co. & it was really a good show. Great music & entertainment. Home to Skyline for nightly bullfest in front of 51/52 till the we hours. Best time to get to know somebody when they've had a few libations. Fun stories from FUN people. Day 3 Mark & Lee, Babe & I escorted Lori as far as Thermopolis as she had to go home early. We took a short dip in the hot spring water. Supposed to be therapudic & give everlasting youth. I'd better bottle some of that. Had a really nice ride back through Greybull & then back to Cody. Nice farm country where they grow nearly all the Moravian Barley for the Coors beer. Attended the Banquet @ the Holiday. Sounds like most of the banquets have been outside in a parking lot before. Thanks for the upgrade Lone Eagle or whoever upgraded this party to the Holiday, IT WAS WONDERFUL, & the food was mountainrific! For those of you not attending you wouldn't believe the 6 table of raffle gifts this group had put together. Must have been $20,000 worth of loot. NICE JOB TO THE BOARD OR WHOEVER PUT THIS PARTY TOGETHER!!!!! Last day has to come at the end of every trip. Nice ride with Mark & Lee & Babe in the Tahoe to Shoshone, then Babe broke off toward Casper & we sent south to Rawlins. Great ride with some spectacular views & some pretty boring highway together. Mark & Lee broke off @ Walcott Junction to visit their daughter in Saratoga. I went on through Laramie & Fort Collins to Fort Morgan to visit with a long time friend & biker buddy. Day 4 rode with Richard B back to Greeley to go to cardiologist for my 6 month checkup since my heart attack. GREAT REPORT..!!!! Dr. Lin Wang Dong (no joke, that's his name) said he wishes he had 10 more patients with recovery like mine. Just what i wanted to hear. Met up with Richard again & rode to Ft Collins & had lunch @ Hooters next to Thunder Mtn Harley. Thanks for being such a GREAT friend Richard!! Got on the scoot & headed home with a heavy heart that the trip was about to end, But then I thought about Babe home alone & I ran up it to 85 & got home as quick as I could. Love To You'all, It Was a Great Time, Graderman46 & Babe & PS I may ask to change my handle to Patrolman46. It's the same thing just different time.
