  1. Does anyone know what size tap I would need to retap a hole in my windsheld bracket I have one that seems cross threaded? Thanks
  2. Add me to the list of those looking to find that Yami engineer that desperately needs my size 13 planted where the sun don't shine. So I read up all of the info I could find about changing the diodes in the TCI. I acquired a bunch of diodes for the job. Got all of the necessary tools ready. And dive in head first. There were some threads that made it sound like it would be not to bad to get the TCI out. I started with the suggestion that it can be done from the bottom without having to remove the air box, so that is where I went first. It should have been an ommen but the very first screw that I touched to remove the lower air scoop the hex hole stripped out, kind of my own fault, the last time I had that piece off to do an oil change I noted that the holes were very rusted and not much hex was left. Not a big deal, grab the Dremel with a cut off wheel and grind a slot for a flat blade screw driver. I took off the rest of the recommended parts to gain access to the TCI and sure enough, there it was starring at me. I thought Cool this ain't so bad. YEA RIGHT! I grab my Phillips bit and a ratchet to get the screws out, only to find out that someone must have been after the TCI once before, the screws were completely rounded out. By using the trick of putting some grinding compound on the tip of the bit to get extra traction I was able to get out the screw on the right side of the bike. The left screw just was not going to come out no matter what tricks I tried, none of which is helped by the fact that you can not even see the screw head. Enter plan 2; So since I can not get to that screw from the bottom I go ahead and pull out the air box. Cool now I can see more of the TCI but still can not get to that last screw. Enter plan 3; Grab a hack saw blade and go ahead and cut off the tab from the side of the TCI, (ain't NO way I am mounting it back up in that god awful place anyhow) Now that the TCI is out I'm off to the house and back into the A/C to do the diode swap. I took out the screws to reveal the bottom of the PCB. then take out the screws to release the PCB from the other half of the case and once again grab my trusty Dremel and make the cut to get the case open. Low and behold there are the diodes. every thing in the TCI looks like bran new, I was expecting to see the big globs of corrosion around the diodes like others have posted, but no these are clean and shiny looking like bran new. This got me to thinking, I wonder if the PO had the TCI replaced at some point before I got the bike and that is why the screws were stripped out. So I pondered this for a few minutes, should I just put it back together or doe the diode swap while I am in there???????? I finally decided to do the swap and was able to do the whole job without lifting any pads. I cleaned the board of all flux and other residue and reapplied a conformal coating to protect the circuits from moisture. I did notice that once I got the cover to the TCI off that there was a small puddle of water inside of the TCI!!!! I had washed the bike two days earlier. So I put a bead of sealant all around the perimeter of the case and sealed up the new seam that I created and sealed up the 2 small holes that Yami put there for no purpose other than to allow water in. Now time to put it all back together. First thing was to plug in the TCI and make sure that the bike still runs, WooHoo, it started right up and all 4 pipes got hot. So per the ideas posted here I cut a hole thru the inside of the faring and pulled the wire harness for the TCI thru the hole. It is plenty long to reach. then I got out some splices and heat shrink to repair the white with green stripe wire that I managed to cut thru while making the hole in the faring. oopie! I used some Velcro strips to attach the TCI to the inside of the faring. While I was in there I cleaned out all of the mouse droppings and nut and seed shells that the mice had left there for me. WTF the dang mouse was still in there. Well at least it is dead, that explains the "aromas" that I had been noticing when sitting a red lights. Got that mess all cleaned up, the rest of the reassembly went quite quickly and uneventfully. Once more start it up to make sure everything still works and Yippee, it does. So at least I don't have to worry about this issue for another 24 years. Now if it will just cool off enough so that I can take it for a ride. OK Rant over...... Back to you regularly scheduled programing.

    where is my post?

I said I had some extra parts and such for sale and posted it on the watering hole forum as I have seen others do. I went back later to read it and found it had been moved. Where was it moved and why? I can't find it. Reno
  4. While pulling & greasing the steering head bearings, I found a small (3/16) hole leading to the upper frame member. Can anyone think of a good reason not to plug this hole. The thought is to put a zerk fitting on the side of the head and be done with pulling this bugger apart to grease the bearings. I think the hole is there to releave pressure while assembling the frame. Since the frame is complete - plug the hole.
  5. Hey wingers, has anybody out there tried a Packit Rak OR one of the similar rigs that mounts to a trailer hitch? I'm looking for more carrying space (more room for momma's stuff and a small cooler) and really would prefer NOT to trailer... I've had a guy I met at a shop rave about the packit set up, but I'm not sure I want a hole in the rear fender:confused24: (though on HIS bike he had a reflector that covered the hole when the rack wasn't installed.!) Anyway, any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated!!
  6. It's another. First I have the mini-stroke and wind up with 6 months off work (that part i'm not complaining about) but now they have screwed up my pay somehow. I've spent 2 days trying to get that straightened out. So that puts me in the hole and knocks me out of the M/D trip. I was soooo looking forward to that. So maybe next year again. You all have fun and enjoy the sunshine and cold drinks.
  7. I need the rubber "cap" or flap or cover that goes over the clutch bleeder access hole on my 84. Anyone got one?

  9. So I picked up a 87 venture but turns out it has 40 lbs when hot in one cylinder, front right, put oil in spark plug hole and on re test reading went up to 60 lbs , the other three are good, yesterday I pulled the motor, put some oil down the spark plug hole and with the comp tester on hand turned the motor and the oil pushed out a valve on the exhaust side, so what do you thing ? chiped valve ? bent valve, bad rings ? I did not test any other cylinder with the oil I do have clearance between camshaft and shim. thanks Mike.
  10. Today was a productive day! Got the J&M Headsets put in both helmets and the GW vent in my stock windshield. The headsets were a breeze. The vent not so much! It wasn't making the hole that was a problem it was getting the vent to fit. Had to thin down the mounting surface a bit to make it work. It's a bit scary to chop a hole in the windshield but my girl was all ready to order the F4 if I screwed up. So either we were going to have a vent! As for the headsets...Holy Smokes!! Why didn't we do this sooner? My girl was giggling the whole time cause we could actually talk. NO MORE HAND SIGNALS! Got a bit of wind moise but we were running with out any windsock so I hope that will improve with some tweaking. If not we will have to invest in Mic-mutes. I really just wish there was a quicker way to get to comm volume. That would make it much easier to use. But all and all we are happy with todays projects. So what do I get to tinker with next? Frank
  11. OK hear my story and I'm sticking to it Back in Dec. there was a discussion about packing the bearings in the steering head. I stated that I had Installed a ZERK in my 04 RSV (as I have done in about 50 different type of bikes). Another member tried it and had a problem 05 model I think, he had put 14oz in his and it still was not coming out. I then tried putting a Zerk in the steering head of a 03 and had the same problems. I said I would find out why and this is what I found. there is a small hole about 1/8 inch in diameter and 1' below the the bearing race in the tube on the back side On my 04 it appeared to be welded from the out side from the factory. My fix was to weld up his from the in side which I did and now his also can be greased Will out pulling the bike apart. what I wanted to know is if this hole is in your bike (it can only be seen when you pack the bearings) and is it open or welded up .this is the first time I have come across something like this. I can not image that this is left open by the factory as water could get in the steering head bearings. I have no ideal why it is there except to poss let the welding gas out when manufactured The pitures are taken standing in frount of bike looking in to the steering head 1 one is of hole 2 is after repaires
  12. Anyone using either of these two RAM mirror-type mounts on an RSV? RAM .87 Inch x 2.25 Inch Base with 11mm Hole and 1 Inch Ball (U) or RAM BASE W/ 9 MM HOLE AND 1" BALL Anyone happend to know (off the top of your head) the diameter of the threaded hole?
  13. I have an '88, 1st gen Venture standard. It did not come from yamy with any sound system. The PO installed a car stereo in the left side of the faring. It is one of the old fashioned ones that mounts in a a rectangular hole with a shaft hole on each side. OK, that is where I am starting from. None of the wiring is present to install the factory stereo and CB. What would be a good CB to put on a bike and where would be a good place to mount it? I am sure that at some point it will get rained on. I would like to be able to adjust the controls while riding. I am not totally opposed to replacing the current stereo as part of this. I'm wide open for ideas.
  14. Rebuilt the water pump on my 89 Venture over the weekend. Everything went well until I started the bike. Now I have a steady stream of water while the motorcycle is running. The water is exiting the weep hole. There is only one seal inside the pump. Any ideas on what I did wrong?
  15. I know, sounds silly. But when we say we use a 4" speaker in the first gen., is that measured diagonally from mounting hole to mounting hole? Or is that actually the diameter of the speaker? Measured diagonally, center to center, the mounting holes are 4.5" apart on the first gen. Thanks, Bill
  16. NOW IM BEING ACCUSSED AS BEING A TROUBLE MAKER AND THAT I HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS It was important imformation to our Canadian friends and this is a Watering Hole Too Much time on my hand s I dont this so, this was the only free time I had all week all I can say is:rasberry:
  17. I just discovered a wiring slot inside the right side of the faring (89 VR) to the outside towards the battery so one does not have to cut a hole in the faring. Has anyone else found it also or was I just blind.
  18. I am going to put my tank back together after painting and then put on my 04 RSV. I went to put the front grommets back into the grommet hole & realized that one side is fatter. after looking at the service, user and parts manual, the pics aren't clear which side the larger end goes. Can someone tell me how to orient the larger grommet end - inside or outside of the grommet hole. I made a mental note of the orientation when removing them, but i have lost it. the mental note that is.
  19. Any suggestions where to mount a mini volt meter on an 89 VR. Protected from rain preferred. Size of mounting hole is M4.3cm×2.3cm(1.7" x 0.9").
  20. Two Tennessee mountain men are out hunting, and as they are walking along they come upon a huge hole in the ground. They approach it and are amazed by the size of it. The first hunter says, "Wow, that's some hole; I can't even see the bottom. I wonder how deep it is." The second hunter says," I don't know, let's throw something down and listen and see how long it takes to hit bottom." The first hunter says, "There's this old automobile transmission here, give me a hand and we'll throw it in and see". So they pick it up and carry it over, and count one, and two and three, and throw it in the hole. They are standing there listening and looking over the edge and they hear a rustling in the brush behind them. As they turn around they see a goat come crashing through the brush, run up to the hole and with no hesitation, jump in head first. While they are standing there looking at each other, looking in the hole and trying to figure out what that was all about, an old farmer walks up. "Say there," says the farmer, "you fellers didn't happen to see my goat around here anywhere, did you?" The first hunter says, " Funny you should ask, but we were just standing here a minute ago and a goat came running out of the bushes doin' about a hunert miles an hour and jumped headfirst into this hole here!" The old farmer said, "That's impossible. I had him chained to a transmission!"
  21. Hey Tom. I hope you can see the attached photos of what I need. The straps would thread through the clasps where my finger is pointing in the second photo. Rusty To everyone else reading this thread...Sorry for posting this in the Watering Hole. I can't figure out how to attach pictures to private messages. I welcome any ideas on how to do that. Rusty
  22. A man, about to tee off felt a tap on his shoulder and a guy hands him a card that read "I am a deaf mute. May I play through, please?" The 1st man angrily gave the card back, and communicated that "No, he may NOT play through, and that his handicap did not give him such a right." The first man whacked the ball onto the green and left to finish the hole. Just as he was about to put the ball into the hole he was hit in the head with a golf ball, laying him out cold. When he came to a few minutes later, he looked around and saw the deaf mute golfer sternly looking at him, one hand on his hip, the other hand holding up 4 fingers.
  23. Hey folks. Just picked up a beautiful original luggage trunk rack for my 88 and want to get it mounted. At one time, I saw some cool large washers used under the rack (topside, not under the lid) where the rack posts contact the box lid. They had a star encircling the center hole. The hole was in the center of the star. Has anyone seen these or understand what I am talking about from my description? I'd like to locate some. Thanks.
  24. NOT REALLY NOTICING MUCH CHANGE FROM STAGE 2 TO 3 WITH THE ROADKINGS I TOOK THE STEPS OF OPENING THE OUTLET END BY PUNCHING 4 HOLES INTO THE METAL SURROUNDING THE INNER BAFFLE. SIMILAR TO DRILLING THE INLET END.; USED A POINTED TAPERED TOOL AND DROVE IT IN UNTIL THE HOLE WAS ABOUT 3/8 OR SO IN DIAMETER. TOOK ALL OF 1 MINUTE PER SIDE NOW SOUNDS MUCH BETTER AT ALL SPEEDS, LIKE A GROWL BUT STILL NOT AFTERMARKET LOUD..
  25. I got in the house late tonight and was just checking out the watering hole. Sitting in the chair with the lights out listening to BTO Not Fragile, thinking to myself IT DONT GET BETTER THAN THIS. Then I thought, what if it did. What songs would be better than that. Any ideas for the next time im sitting in the dark........
