  1. Strange pictures poping up on post, most are of a yellow 1st gen............Is everybody else having the same problem..............?????.
  2. Anyone riding a red 1st Gen with sidecar at 5pm in Hampshire, Illinois at the intersection of Rt 47 and Big Timber? Yellow full face helmet.
  3. I've placed my First Gen in the classifieds.....
  4. Would this qualify as a "First Gen Trike"? :rotf::rotf:
  5. Well, I went to my first "Slimey Crud Run". It's a motorcycle rally that takes place just west of Madison, goes from Pine Bluff to Leland, WI. Lots of different bikes, from old to new, show ready to barely running, Brit, American, Asian, and the people to match them. I saw some 2nd gen Ventures, but only saw a couple of 1st gen ones. Unfortunately, mine wasn't there. I fixed the shifter cam issue, but since it had been "abandoned" for several months, I couldn't get it running in time to go, so I took my other bike, a 650 Maxim that I've had for 18 years. Yes, it is green. -Andrew
  6. Is there still a shim kit floating around? I have a 2001 RSV with 25K, it's time for the valves to be adjusted. Can anyone help me out? Is the 2nd gen tool in there too? Send me a PM. Thanks everyone.
  7. has anyone done a rk muffler swap with a first gen?
  8. I have read many threads that have comments that state their 1st. gen is faster. I thought it was just banter between the two generations, until today, when I read from a fired up member that owns a HD and a first generation. He was tired of a post that he thought was a HD bashing and after he bragged up his HD he closed with a statement that his 1st. gen. would blow the doors off of any 2nd. gen.!!!!! So, are the 1st. generation bikes faster? If so why?
  9. On my 01 venture I want to put our rain suits in the lids. What is a good way to do it? I tried sticky velcro but it peels off after a while then I have to clean the glue off and do it again. Thanks Richie R
  10. On Friday, 9/9/2011, around 1:30 pm I was behind a 1st Gen at the off ramp of Hwy 599 n Interurban Ave S. making a left turn so I pulled up along side. He said that his is an 85 and recently purchased it and also is a new member of Venture Rider. Just want to say hello.
  11. Does anyone know of a larger front crash bar for the 1st Gen? Something that provides better protection and still looks decent. I accidently dropped the VR in the garage and the thing laid absolutely flat. Nothing damaged. Something that would at least allow the VR to lay at an angle and protect the fairing and acessories.
  12. Anyone install the passing lamp bar spacer ( the one Tony makes) on a lowered front end 2nd gen? are there any issues with it hitting the fender? Thanks
  13. Mike called me from work. He saw a 1st gen in our subdivision. As he said, " I was thinking Yammer Dan came looking for us and got the wrong house." Second Sighting: Bright blue 2nd gen in the Radioshack parking lot on Booth RD. Rider was a Radioshack customer today who admired Mike's bike as he left. Mike didn't get a chance to introduce himself. If ANYONE knows who these ppl are we'd love to know.
  14. 2003 with 58000 km on it. Took it out for a ride, seems to ride just fine,, not as nice as a 1st gen, but then it's not a first gen. Steering seemed a little loose, that all. Didn't see any serious marks or breaks. Needs a good cleaning.
  15. I found a White 88 1st Gen close to home. Can you hide a 1st Gen??
  16. I need a triple tree for a 1989. I requested and purchased a triple tree recently. It turns out it's the wrong one. Triple tree facts: the triple tree I need turns out to have the same lower as the 1200, but the upper (on the backside will have the casting numbers 1NL) will facilitate the second gen need for a vibration dampener system. The important thing here is, lower half of triple tree fits both 1st and 2nd gen. Upper half of triple tree has casting number 1NL and has bigger holes to facilitate the vibration dampener system. So, bottom line is, I need one for the 2nd gen. Look for the "1NL" on the under side of the upper and that will be the right one. It's not very distinct, but the old style is cast with "26H".
  17. Hi, Im new to the this site. And have seen the terms 1st gen and 2nd gen. What are the years for them. I just bought an 88 Venture Royale that has been made into a trike, Im getting older and it harder to hold me and the wife up, so figured I would go to 3 wheels when we ride together. Still ride 2 wheels when Im alone. Took the bike in and the mechanic said it needed new carb boots and he is having trouble finding them.Does anyone know where I can find them. Thanks Ron:thumbsup2:
  18. Well, I got the paperwork all done and now I’m the proud owner of a 1989 Venture. I started looking at it about a week ago and found this site through my son, who is already a venture rider(second gen.) and member. I read through the first 35 pages of the first gen. forum, and found all sorts of good information. Now about the Venture. It has 56K miles, and all the leather is in very good shape. The trunk, saddle boxes, faring and windshield are in very good condition. The dash has some areas where the screw holes are broken off, and some of the vent louvers are broken or missing especially by the motor. The collector ‘rattles’ on start-up, but goes away after a couple of minutes, I can live with that for awhile. It has a Dunlap 491 on the front and a Avon venom on the rear, air pressures are good and the casting whiskers are still visible near the outside of the tread area. All of the electronics seem to be working, except for the CLASS, which has the E-4 problem. I have an electrical/mechanical background and the information posted on about page 12, of the ‘first gen. forum’, gave me the information I need to get that repaired.(Thanks) The water resistant paper on the amplifier ‘road noise pick-up mike’ is damaged, so if someone knows of a replacement product, that would help. Using the Schrader Valves mounted on the right rear fender, I found the rear shock pressure at 40 psi. and the front at 0 psi. I reduced the rear to 15, and increased the front to 15. (When I checked the pressure for the forks, oil leaked from the Schrader valve.) The pressures have been holding steady for about an hour. I will probably have to purge the air line back into the forks. The dampener is set on 4 and I will reduce this to 1 because I will be riding ‘1 up’ for awhile. (BTW- somewhere in the forum was a tip to put a 2 by 4 under the rear tire to help in getting up onto the center stand, I don’t think I could have done it any other way. A 2 by 6 by 16” is now part of the tool kit in my right saddle box.) The previous owner kept the fuel valve in the reserve position, is that a good idea? I used to ride,, back-in-the-day , early 70’s. I had a ‘65’ 650Triumph Bonneville when I was single and in the Navy on the west coast. This Venture is a little bigger and I am a little older so it will take some time to get comfortable and confident again. rod
  19. Would like to know how and where you mounted your GPS on a 1st Gen MKII. Pictures would be appreciated.
  20. Finally found a deal to work and I am now the proud new owner of an 89 Venture Royale:cool10:. My 07 RSV is headed South shortly with Grey Ghost. It was with a heavy heart that I had to let the 07 go, but was eased by my new addition. Rode the 89 into work this morning (1st time riding a 1st gen) and it is much different than a 2nd gen, but I loved the way it handled. Gonna get out tonight after work and take my girl for a ride (she already loves it after sitting on it last night)and the kids are quite excited about getting their first ride when they come back tomorrow night.
  21. After reading everything I could find about the clutch basket whine, it seems that I read a viable fix to substantially reduce the basket noise may be in changing the 2nd gen clutch basket to a 1st gen clutch basket? I forget where I saw it, but somewhere I thought I read that one of the 1st gen baskets needs 1st gen clutch parts, while the other uses the 2nd gen clutch parts. I cannot remember if the 1200 or the 1300 1st gen basket could be used with 2nd gen parts. Does anyone know which is which? Just modified my clutch last winter. No change in the whine, but my clutch parts, i.e. plates and pressure plate are in very good shape and I would rather not replace them if I do not have to do that. Thanks.
  22. The Dealer says I need steering head bearings which is over 4 hours labour at $85 per hour plus the kit. The bike only has 65,000 so I"m wondering if perhaps they are just loose. I'm going to look into that this afternoon. But if I need some work on it........I've got Dingy's wrench But I need a "how to". I found a tutorial for 2nd Gen by Freebird...but couldn't find anything on a 1st Gen (mkII) ....could anyone let me know if there is a how to on REPLACING or Greasing the steering bearings?
  23. Think I saw a First Gen Trike today... not sure .. is this what they look like? j/k Resourceful for sure..Use what you have available I suppose..
  24. I keep hearing you guys with the first gen's bragging about how fast they are. Well, heres proof that my second gen is not only fast but handels very well also. This was done on Ga hwy 348 (Richard B. Russell Scenic Hwy.) which cuts through the mtn's of north Ga at some of ga's highest elevations. I never felt like I was doing more than 70mph. http://venturerider.org/forum/picture.php?pictureid=5687&albumid=517&dl=1310929526&thumb=1 I don't want to hear anything else about the speed of first gen's. :no-no-no::rasberry:
  25. I started to add this to collection because ITS BLUE!!! Good deal for someone that has one all cracked up. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1983-1984-Yamaha-Venture-Trunk-/160621025625?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2565c25959 Or if you have a MK ll http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAHA-87-XVZ1300-VENTURE-ROYALE-REAR-LUGGAGE-TRUNK-/250855693422?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a682a1c6e
