  1. Well, I went and picked her up yesterday. 1989 Venture Royale. I should have known better though, I went out with a partially dying battery (would not hold a good charge) and somewhat paid the price. I had the radio on (stupid move) and didn't realize it had stalled, while sitting at a long traffic light. Went to go and whoops, nothing. Had to push it through the intersection and a few hundred feet lol. Had people honking at me to tell me their displeasure, even though there was another lane for them to occupy. This was after a few hour trip so no complaints, got it started again and took it straight home. Flushed all of the brake systems today, now nice clean fluid and firm levers. The dealership I got it from must not have realized it was a linked rear master cylinder because the front line and proportioning line were not bled at all but the rear brake line was. They had adjusted the master cylinder stroke so the brakes would constantly drag so I had to lengthen the stroke of the master cylinder. So no parts required, and no more dragging rear brakes. Did a slow panic stop only using the rear master and it works as intended. I have a really choppy idle, above 2000 rpm's she takes off like a rocket and is very fast, under that she's really lopey. I have a set of 4 carburetor diaphragms coming in tomorrow and plan to replace the plugs so hopefully that will help some. I know I am going to have to sync. the carbs. but I need to get some gauges first. Oh and the steering bearings need to be tightened some or replaced, but works fine for the moment. Overall even not running 100% I am happy that I got her, and was able to ride comfortably longer than I ever have before. I am going to upload a video shortly as well.
  2. I was thinking of de-linking the brakes on my '86 VR. Does the standard front master cylinder have sufficient capacity to operate both the front calipers, or does it need changing? Thanks
  3. I have a broken rear brake master cylinder reservoir, anyone know where to get a replacement?
  4. Guest

    Not motorcycle related

Tonight a friend called and said his front brakes are lock up both sides, so I said master cylinder is bad or the caliber pistons.. He was blocking traffic so we called a wrecker they towed to a parking lot in a safe area. Then I notice some wiring hook to the master cylinder trace the wires back to the inside to a toggle switch flip the switch and brakes unlock. He just bought the car and that switch was use for burn outs when, I guess when you are racing.. This is the first I ever seen or heard it. Anyone ever heard of this?
  5. The cover plate on side of the engine, each cylinder has one and it is held in place with a phillips head screw. The cover was loose and rattling and the screw would not turn in or out. Well the short is the head is now stripped out. Any thoughts on how to free the screw. I thought about drilling out the screw head............I'm afraid of ripping a hole in the cylinder. I believe the screw is fused to the aluminum in the block. AHHHAHHHH. joe (Saddle_Bag)
  6. I noticed coolant leaking from the left rear cylinder... http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/BriRit/2011-03-28_16-40-52_203.jpg I removed the side cover from the cylinder and found this brass looking plug leaking coolant. What is it, and how do I fix it? http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/BriRit/2011-03-28_16-45-54_601.jpg
  7. Hello all, I has a slight coolant leak under the cylinder "fins" that developed over the winter while in storage on my '03 RSV. From talking to people and reading posts by the fine folks here, I ordered in new plugs and changed all 4. Taking out the old ones, I lost some coolant as expected. The new plugs fit fine and I have no leaks now. The question I have is the new plugs have a female thread in the center of them for a bolt or screw. The old ones were just rubber with no threads. Is there supposed to be a bolt or screw that goes in the threaded portion of these new plugs? Thanks.
  8. I have a stuck spark plug. When I say "stuck", I don't mean tight, I mean it will barely move. I am trying all the tricks to ease it out slowly. I might even be able to run the motor later for a few minutes to warm the head up. In the meantime, I am trying to work it back and forth while soaking it in PB Blaster. Questions: 1. If the tread comes out with the plug, can the rear cylinder head be removed with the engine in the frame? 2. If the engine has to come out, what is the easiest way (I have the Yamaha Manual)? 3. Any tips, other than "sell it"? Grrrr!
  9. on cylinder 1&2 they just get warm also the exhaust just gets warm not hot like 3&4 cylinder i have gas and spark to all cylinders compression pressure on all 4 cylinders is 165 psi is this right or should all 4 cylinder get hot on 1&2 cylinder i can touch the motor and exhaust right off cylinders just warm ever after a 30min run time does not get hot like 3&4
  10. hi all as some of you know i have a '99 rsv trike that we found out that was only firing on 3 cylinders. with much help from ponch, squid & a phone call to goose. last saturday squidly & i fix the #1 cylinder to fireing order. so now i'am a happy camper having all 4 coils sparking again. we changed out the ignition module and problem solved. so the orginal #1 coil is still good. took the trike out sunday for a 170 mile round trip ride. the power was right there and the gas milage was back were it should be for a trike. thanks again for all the help and advice. reguards don c.
  11. When I bought the 86 Vr the owner said the hydraulic clutch needed to be rebuilt and when I played with it that is all it seemed to be. I had spare rebuild kits for the master cylinder and slave so I went about fixing it today and low and behold someone had tried fixing the slave and ruined the housing now I need to find a slave cylinder housing.
  12. There have been a couple threads recently about potential valve or ring damaged engines (yet to be verified). Harbor Freight has a Cylinder leak-down tester for $35 http://www.harborfreight.com/cylinder-leak-down-tester-94190.html or a simpler compression tester for $20. http://www.harborfreight.com/compression-test-kit-66216.html Would these be worth while to buy for local maintenance days, or for Freebird's MD? Who has used these devices, and how long does it take to test all 4 cylinders with one? Is there enough need or interest in testing compression to make this worthwhile? http://www.harborfreight.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/370x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/image_6165.jpg
  13. i just got this venture cuple weeks ago, 86 1300cc, sat basicly outside since 03. it was under an awning i cleaned the carbs top to botom very very well. replaced carburator diaphrams WHen i got the bike it turned over slowly, i know not a good sign, i sprayed pb blaster in there and turned it over and put oil in there and now it seems to turn over fine THe bike would start when i got it but would only run for about 10 seconds and only with choke fully on, one of the sparkplugs appears to be burning clean and three of them are always wet i dont think compression is a problem as it seems to be 150 plus on each cylinder I HAVE spark, pretty decent spark on every plug , i just pulled my cdi off the bike just to take a look at it, o yea she has 84000 miles, on her, its just hard for me to think TCI when the spark is so good but i have tried everything else that i know off any help would be greatly appreciated really wanna get this thing up and running
  14. OK, its me again with MORE questions. This time as I basically reading the repair manual from front to back I notice that the RSTD and I assume the Venture show different size main jets for each cylinder. Main jet (M.J) #1, #122.5 #2 #122.5 #3: #117.5 #4: #120 Why is this. I know on my wife's HD Fatboy the front cylinder gets different spark plugs from the rear due to the difference in the heat range of the cylinders as the front will run cooler due to getting colder air as you ride, the back gets the warm air from the front cylinder. But this is a water cooled engine, soooo all the cylinders should be within a few degrees of each other. It uses the same spark plug front and rear why not the same jets? Just doesn't make sense to me, can anyone explain? Tom
  15. Reference item two (in red) in the attached pic. Currently, on my 08 RSV, the "plunger" is kind of sticky...when I depress the brake lever, I can actually feel a kind of click as the actuator acuates. In fact, I've adjusted the lever as much as possible, but I've bottomed out on the screw/locknut combination, and still have a lot of play. It's almost as if the plunger isn;t retraction all of the way (out away from the master cylinder). A couple of questions: 1) Can these parts (item 2) be cleaned? 2) Is this repair considered a warranty repair? 3) If this isn;t a warranty item, is this easy to replace? Thanks for your inputs!
  16. When I release the clutch on my 99 RSV I get a pop or click from the master cylinder, it appears to me that it is the boot around the push-rod making the noise. I have plenty of fluid and the clutch is working fine except the noise. I never noticed it before today, however I did not have the engine running when I noticed it so it may have been around for awhile. Do I need to start thinking about rebuilding the master cylinder? Has anyone else experienced this? I am planning to change the fluid Sunday to see if that helps.
  17. Has anyone ever experienced a faulty key ignition causing "no spark" to one of the cylinders?? I thought I had a bad TCI but I tried another and I had the same problem. I fiddled with the key (sprayed a little WD-40 in the key slot) - worked it back and forth a couple of dozen times and suddenly got spark! The bike has kind of been driving me crazy with the lack of spark to that cylinder - then - suddenly spark again... Just wondering if the bad key ignition could cause that symptom or not - best to ask the Venture specialists here on the board. Thanks in advance
  18. New Venture owner here. I just purchased a 84 Venture. It has 36K on it and is cosmetically in great shape. The problem is that #3 cylinder is oiling out the exhaust.....alot. So much so that it will eventually foul the plug. Goes without saying that it smokes terribly. The kicker here is that it won't start smoking until the engine has been running for 2 or 3 minutes. I would think that if it were rings, that it would start smoking at startup. I am wondering if I have a cracked head, possibly near a valve guide that the crack opens up as the head heats up. Anyone have any opinions on this? BTW, great site. Lots of great info here.
  19. I am in need of a rear master cylinder reservoir for 1983 Venture. My brother just bought my old '83, and while working on the brakes for him, I was trying to loosen the bolt on the rear master, and I broke the housing. So....I need a rear master cylinder reservoir. Let me know what you got, and how much.
  20. New Oil change and bike is still hard to shift. Neutral is hard to find. I bled it out with all new Val Sync fluid in it. Time to rebuild Slave Cylinder??
  21. I looked and got a few ideas from other cold pipe threads. I got the 01 RSV about a month or so ago, and don't know the history on it except that it needed an oil change soon. I have ridden it a few times, just to get the feel of it, and have found that there are a few annoying little things that were mentioned when I picked it up, like dropping out of curse,,,, and it does. In a couple of weeks I am going to tare it down to the frame and do a repaint, and Trike it. I am going to get the normal things while it is down to the frame like fuel filter, plugs (maybe platinum ) things like that that are a little bit of a pain to change. I am in the toolies, and don't have access to a sync thingie to check the carbs,, I start it now and then to keep the battery up, and fluids flowing. I noticed tonight that the right rear cylinder pipe is cold..?? I run the RPM's up a little and it gets hot like the others, but as soon as it goes back to idle the pipe cools right off and can be touched,,,,, Stumped, and out of my element some here. I sprayed carb cleaner around that carb while idling, and it seemed that the pipe got a tad hotter for a split sec. Am I on the right track. There are other cruiser types here in our big city but closest shop is 75 miles away. I guess I will be looking for a good local guy to help, and maybe sync the carbs. It runs out good some slight hesitation on pull off then OK...
  22. OK, I'm tired of boogering up the heads of the master cylinder screws every time I need to add brake fluid to my bike. Does anybody know where I can order that size screw in hardened stainless or an allen head???
  23. I know this isn't the place to start this, but I'm casting the widest net for help. Decided to change fluid and added a speed bleeder to make the job easier. Every thing was going fine, nice new fluid flowing, and went to close the bleeder - and it broke off . Took slave cylinder out, drilled out and re-tapped so stock bleeder would fit. Now it won't hold pressure/close. Did I drill too deep? Looks like I'll need a new/used cylinder, unless the geniuses here have a solution. Any ideas???
  24. The local bike shop, privately owned, that I was gonna have do my yamaha venture carbs went ape sh*t on me... I also have a honda V65 Sabre and on Wednesday I took I ride out to his shop and wanted to buy 2 little screws that go into the cap on the clutch master cylinder...Evidently that was not the question of the day... I ended up being told I was stupid for not bringing the screw with me, of course the screw was outside on the bike, then I was threatened of being shot so I went to grab for my keys to get out of there and he pulled his fist back to hit me, says he thought I was reaching for a gun, I dont carry a gun and my pants were to tight to put a gun in the pocket anyway... So yes this was just a messed up day. I am still shocked, I just cant believe all I wanted was 2 screws and end up in a confrentation. I rode over to a friends house and told him what happened and he has kawasaki's, yamaha's and a few honda's and they all had the same size screws for the brake cylinder and clutch cylinder so I am not sure why the guy was having a fit over bring in the screws... I never wanted to hit someone so bad in all my life, good thing I didnt tho, I later found out his best freind is a deputy sheriff. go figure. I think he could learn a few lessons from how this group/forum runs and acts... On for a better day tho.. I finaly got a new full time job and see my yamaha venture getting fixed up somewhere else and being ridden on a road trip soon...
  25. Okay here's the story: Most of you know that AL installed a Spiegler thumb brake on the Quike for me [moved back brake] He recently removed back wheel, replaced tire with car tire, greased all the splines etc. and replaced the rear brake pads.................now we don't have the thumb brake working again! He can get all the air out of the SS braided line, but still not enough resistance on thumb brake. It will bleed properly with original bike master cylinder, but not with thumb brake M/C. I have emailed Squeeze to see if he can ask Spiegler how to do their master cylinder, and for now Quickstep has linked the brakes.....so my question  What is your opinion on dual linked brakes on the Gen 2:confused24:
