  1. Can i change the circuit breaker from 5 amps to say 15_20 amps without blowing up the electrical system? I need to run a 12 volt air pump which has blown the 5 amp fuze tout de suit (PDQ) both times i've tried. Any thoughts? FF
  2. Hello i am new to the forums and it sucks that my first post is a problem. I can not seem to get my air ride to work on my 86 royale when I start the bike it comes on but then it goes to E4. Does anybody know what this could be?
  3. Going through my carbs and was wondering jet sizes. I thought mine were stock. Slows were all #15 but mains were: LF-122.5, LR-122.5, RF-120, RR-117.5. Is this a stock arrangement? OK, did more digging, they're stock. Pilot screws were between 1½ to 2¼. location ?. Do you need to put the covers back on screws? Carbs were filthy on outside (little on inside as someone had put air filters in wrong) I'm guessing all these years with eng case vent line dumping oily laced air in the air filter case. Has anyone dumped the eng case vent to atmosphere like the other vent lines? I've seen it done on other bikes. Why is the sky blue. I'll stop there!
  4. Talk about a STUPID senior moment. I went to change the fork oil the other day and not thinking squatted down in front of the little drain screw and took it out. I hadn't released the air pressure. Talk about an oil bath, my wife is still laughing at me.
  5. ...and then this happens! Not sure where it was, but I'm guessing BC since there is a Canadian flag in the infield and a billboard ad for KISW radio 99.9 FM which is a Seattle station. This is going to ruin our reputation for being quiet and peaceful. But I would have loved to be there to see it. 6. Bought Ken W. (forum member) MCT Trailer in anticipation of our first two week trip...Wife and I are heading out Sept. 3rd heading to Badlands area of South Dakato....Been doing a lot of reading here.....Changed Oil, Filter, Rear End Gear Oil, Sync'ed Carbs, Checked Air in all tires (including trailer), checked Trailer bearing for grease....purchased tire plug repair kit....have small air compressor....Did test run on Blueridge Pkwy and Four-Lane at speed (no problems)..Cleaned and re-oiled K&N Filters.....Got a lot of help from a Goldwing riding couple on how to pack, size of cooler, etc.... How/Where do I download/print the VR Assist List? NOW I HAVE TO WAIT 3 WEEKS... BIDING MY TIME:fingers crossed:>>>>>OF COURSE I KNOW IT WILL GET DIRTY DURING THE TWO WEEKS... Long Tall Lynchburg, VA
  7. After three months of inactivity, I've finally gotten back to the fork seal replacement on my '87 VR. Can't see how to remove the air ride collars on the upper tubes though. I've loosened the bolts a bit, but now the rubber tubes on them spin the bolt back with each turn. I need to get these off to get the upper tube out to finish the seal install. I tried the method from the tech library section, but I just can't get the seal and bushings seated properly that way. This is my "last gasp" effort as I have pretty much had it with this job. I'm not certain I can even get it put back together now, but if I can at least get the fork together and the wheel back on, it will be easier to move the bike. Failing that, I will completely strip it and put the parts on ebay. It was running quite well when I stored it last November and everything still works, so I may be able to get some decent money for the pieces, but I need to get it out of my garage and somewhere else to dismantle it...so, I need to get the fork and the wheel back on so that I can move it. Now then...how do I remove the air ride collars? The description in the manual says "Remove air ride collars." Wow...that's really helpful! Sorry, but since I'm not that bright or talented, I need just a bit more info. Right now, my angle grinder with a cutting blade is looking mighty attractive! Andy
  8. Getting ready for our first long distance trip to Tenn. in 3 weeks have read a lot of threads on tires an choices. V7 Goose has a bunch But anyway checked my tires on my new to me RSV still have good tread but front is Dunlop 404 an rear a Bridgestone something both have a date code of 09. The more i read the less uncomfortable I am with this set up been running zero air 2up since i have had. Thanks to info here I kinda know where to start on the air issue. One problem I thought was all me was a lil wallowing in the turns especially long sweepers cant seem to hold a continues line all the way through will out constant correction If i understand what I've read the air suspension an tires are the culprit an yes i check tire pressure an set according to owners Manuel. So now to my Question is combo. safe an will a new set of tires make me a better rider. I know a better gun won't make someone a better shot but can let them shoot up to there ability.
  9. I saw this on WOOT.Com this morning and though some of you campers might be interested in this air matress. Ida jumped on it but already own one.... It'll only last a day or until sold out.
  10. Good day. I just got my '86 back on the road after some major carb transplantation. I had 2 carbs with hopelessly seized low speed jets so I got a set of 4 from thirdbike and frankensteined a set out of the 8. The floats were perfect and as it turns out, the needles he sent were different than mine...with a longer and shallower taper. They were also set to their max rich setting. I put on some new diaphragms on the best of the slides, left it at max rich and bolted it back together. Holy crap...what a bunch of nasty noises when I started it up...I did a balance, set the low speed jets by ear and now it's running better ever. With the needles set rich, I don't have the bogging with the filter out anymore since more gas needs more air. Some previous owner had drilled some holes in the air box lid and then covered them up with tape...I took off the tape and no bogging. I was planning on trying this experiment for some time and this was a good opportunity. The bike has more power than before, smooth from idle to redline, no dead spots, no more popping at idle, leaner at idle, (less raw gas stank), and I don't even need the choke anymore when it's cold. Basically it goes like a scalded rabbit. I could probably lean it out for a bit but instead, I'm going to try supply even more air and put that extra gas to good use. I'm getting about 32 mpg, (us gallons), but it runs so damned good that I think I'd rather eat the couple of extra bucks than chance screwing with the goodness of the engine. I added a couple of huge wind deflectors to the fairing so that will have dropped the mileage a bit. Someday I maybe even change the plugs. So if your bike is running somewhat rich, maybe try giving the engine more air as a first resort...it working great for me.
  11. Is there a secrete in how to remove the left and right lower air vents on an MKII?
  12. I've got a leaky seal on my front forks. Due to financial constraints, they will have to wait to get fixed this winter. As of now, they don't have much pressure of any kind to them and riding a low rider without much suspension is not my cup of tea.... Lol. The class system flashes E1 which I'm assuming from what I've read is due to the lack of pressure or ability to create pressure. Anywho? Any easy ways to refil these with fluid and/or air so I can have a few more good rides this season before she gets overhauled this winter? Thanks guys!
  13. anyone live near Memphis and going to the Air show Saturday? (It's actually being held at the airfield in Millington, just north of Memphis) Our son is flying the B2 over. The Blue Angels will be there. Going to be a fantastic show! If you are in the area, please come or at least look UP!! it's going to be awesome!
  14. I need to buy new air filters for the 06 RSTD. Anyone have suggestions on a vendor with a good price and quality? Are the K and N filter worth the money?
  15. i had enough. decided to remove class. controller kept showing e4, no matter how many time i checked and resolder joints. no matter how many times i cleaned connections and checked wiring. no matter how many times i yelled at it. it just is junk. so off to the hardware stores i went! first, removed class compressor at 2 air line bolts. unhooked wiring, and junked it. then cut off old fittings. tapered air hose about 1/2 inch to get compression fittings on easier. cut off taper for clean look. used locktite 545 (hydraulic) to assemble fittings. did for both sides. i wasnt sure which was for which, so i put air in sloooowly. front of bike jumped into air and nearly scared me to death! set at 15psi. next rear( i only know its rear because of previous near-death experience). set at 52psi. im 220lbs. price of parts: $17.00 time took: 2 hrs(newbie, take it easy people) being able to cancel fitting for straight-jacket: priceless.
  16. When I talked myself into buying the RSTD last April one of the key points I sold myself on in trading my V-Star 950 cruiser was that any time I wanted I could pop off the quick release windshield and backrest and I'd have the style and open air feel of a cruiser. 5 months later I've got the windshield and backrest off so I can get into the details of my baby's weekly bath and wax. I'm about to put them back on when the thought occurs that I've never (NEVER) taken her out without the clip-ons attached. Hmmm. Helmet on and off we go. The difference in feel is amazing. It's like having a completely different bike hidden inside the shell of the RSTD. The open air feel, the perception of freedom, the (probably imagined) nimbleness of response, all brought back the feeling that I loved on my 950. I love the big screen on the highway, and my wife loves the backrest and armrests, but I think the plexi and the backrest may be spending more time on the shelf than they've been used to when I'm going 1-up in town... It feels like the very first time....
  17. Been awhile since I was here last but I just pulled my 1990 VR out of the corner and brushed the dust off! Naturally I had to give the carbs a good going through. She is running sooooo pretty now! The air ride E4 glitch was back but a little cleaning of the connector pins made the air pump clammer back to life. I have a tiny oil leak at the staor cover gasket from a previous fix but thats easy stuff. I am wondering about interchangeability of body doo dads on the xvs12 and 13 such as the windshield, radiator cover, and front turn signals. I have a right signal lens that is cracked and my rad cover has a crack as well. She is a nice old girl and I would like to keep her thataway. Anyhoo glad to have her back on the road I forgot what a comfy bike it is to ride! Dave
  18. Doing maintenance checks on newly aquired 99 RSV with 55k and found the air filters were installed with the tab on top of the slot they are meant to go into, leaving a small gap. I wondered why the air intakes had a layer of dust/dirt on them when I removed the filter housing. Care to guess how much shorter the engine life is now? In the process of trying to find when they were replaced, but they didn't look new! Also the brake fluid looked like the original, like a dark beer color. Everything seems to work fine though, hope she lasts a few years!
  19. I dont know if anyone else is interested in this or not, but here goes. There are almost 12,000 members on this board. Does yamaha monitor this forum? If not they should. Here is a group that not only owns these bikes but take the time to share their ideas. The 2nd generation Venture is basically the same as 12 years ago, it's got to be time for an update. I love a lot of things about my bike but would like to see some modernizing. So I will offer my ideas. I welcome challenges to my opinions and input from others. maybe Yamaha will keep some of these ideas in mind when they develope the next generation. here is a start: ADD Fuel Injection. Improve economy (A BMW with the same weight and displacement can get 55 MPGs). Better cold starts. No more cleaning carbs. Etc, etc… Hydraulic Valves. No more adjusting. Longevity. ABS. Safety. Insurance rates. Linked Brakes. Safety. Insurance Rates. Adjustable Windshield. Ala BMW and Kawasaki. Because they are awesome! Adjustable Handlebars. They just don’t fit everyone. 3rd Brakelight. Safety. Insurance rates. Tachometer. Self Explanitory. Other Guages. Nice to have. Temp, Volts, Air Pressure. Gear Indicator. The bike is quiet. When I ride next to Harleys I forget which gear I am in. The Tachometer will help with this also. On board Air Compressor. Can adjust suspension. Have air for flats. (If not an onboard compressor at least link the front and then rear shock air system together so they can be equally adjusted) No Roll Back Clutch. Subaru used to make one. This is a heavy bike. Loaded down with passenger and luggage, in traffic, on a hill sometimes it is a monster to take off. It must be able to be disengaged with a thumb button right next to the clutch lever so the bike can be moved around a parking lot. This will give you something the competition does not offer. Delete Cassette Player. Self Explanitory Keep V-4 .Everyone has a twin. Seat. The best stock one out there IMHO
  20. So, preparing for a nice 90 minute ride to camp, checked the air pressure on the front and after removing the tire gauge, whoosh! All the air came rushing out. Much to my dismay, the whole stem came out too. Guess it's time to replace the whole valve stem with something other than rubber? Glad this happened in the garage though and not on the road.
  21. I was looking to lower the front of my bike, checked in the tech forum and found an older post that Freebird and 2Mike2 had posted back in 06, I would like to make a couple of helpful notes: After you have the fairing off be sure you have a good pad on the tank or you will make a couple of dimples as I did! They both mention this, after you have the Triple Tree removed, the top fork covers off and after loosening the 4 Allen screws take a crescent wrench and turn the upper fork tube at the air valve stem to about 9:00, or you will have to loosen and re-due everything as I did after I got the Triple Tree re-installed! I lowered my forks 1 1/8" and it made the valve stem too close to the handlebars to get a air hose on! I had put the Leveling Links on a year ago, it did help in the handling but I have a 29" inseam and was getting harder to handle in the parking lots and at some of the stops, I took the links off and re-installed the factory links, I also had Rick Butler do my seat, I'm now down to a 27" seat height, I put 10# of air in the back and 0# in the front, that would depend on your PP. I took a 250 mile ride yesterday, a lot of up and down and twisty corners, what a difference! The bike seems so much better balanced it's like night and day to me! Another quick note if you have a light bar be sure and be careful getting that back on, it's very easy to strip the threads, I had to re-tap mine!! Be sure and have lots of tools and a good memory. Larry M
  22. Got the bike last week. Running ok, horrible gas mileage. Just didn't feel right. Previous owner supposedly had the carbs rebuilt. Found that one of the carbs idle air screw was closed. Set all to 2 1/2 turns and gained substantial power, but sluggish at wot. Starts great idles fine, but something still seems off. Changed plugs and wires, no change. Where I was at yesterday; gas mileage is horrendous, wot is fluttering, #3 cylinder exhaust temp 450ish and the rest 150-190ish. Starts easy, idles easy and runs down the road fine. Feels like I can drive it anywhere. This morning I decided to pull the carbs. Boy it was a pita, throttle cables at the carb were a nightmare and reinstalling the cables and the vacuum line from engine to the air box was a royal pain. Well, looks like I got half a rebuild. Looks like new diaphragms (or nice old ones), new air jets etc... The wet side was pretty nasty, but got it all cleaned out. Put it back together and started it and it now idles at 3500+ without the choke. I can hold the throttle closed and will drop to 1500, let go back up. When I put my hand slamming the throttle it barely moves. Out side cable has slack, not sure about the inner cable. Before I put the carbs on I tried to get all butterflies near closed and the same as best as my old eyes could so whatever sync that was on it is long gone. Ideas on what I can do? I don't have a sync tool, but have a single vacuum gauge. I thinkmit might be an issue with the inner throttle cable. I tried single gauge sync yesterday before I decided to pull the carbs and I had real bad flutter in the gauge so I limited flow and saw only about 1mm of vacuum in all carbs. Hopefully that changes tomorrow. I'm real tight on money right now, so I won't have a sync tool for another couple of weeks.
  23. I ride with the air pressure on automatic normal settings. I think that is about 15 lbs front 40 lbs rear. Soon my wife will ride for the first time in 28 years and. Just out for a leasure ride. With all my normal carring stuff and me and my wife, I'm guessing about 330 lbs total. Interested in others air pressure recommendations experience for a 1st Gen MKII..
  24. I went to price some replacement parts for the upper right cowling on my 89 Venture Royale, YIKES! I am looking for 2 parts; 1 is the console panel that goes around the leveler, cb, speaker and air outlet part # 26h-2837m-01-00. The 2nd is the acutual grill cover that goes over the air outlet, part #26h-2837w-00-00. If anyone can help with either steering me in the right direction for finding these at a more reasonable price or has an alternative for what to do with the grill missing on the air outlet, I would be grateful. I am also missing a vent, others are broken or missing. The cost to replace what needs to be replaced is close to $600 from the Yamaha dealer. I hope this is the right place to post this and again thanks so much for your help and suggestions! Ed
  25. I,m thinking of takeing the clear wings off below the fairing or are they needed to protect the forks.. I thought they might let the air flow a little better on the hot days Ron
