  1. I have lost all power 2x now. Once while going 55 and once while parked and both after at least 15miles. I did not have power to anything either time. No headlights speedo etc no power to start the bike. Twenty minutes later all is good. I guess the igniton switch is bad and needs cleaning checking out. I suspected this or battery issues in previous thread and several members agreed it was ignition. I agree after seeing this again as it did it while parked. Turned the key on and off over and over and nothing. Then 20-25 minutes and I'm good to go. It appears that this may be a heat issue. Perhaps the driving lights are wired thru switch causing it to heat up? I reviewed what I can find on this site about the ignition switch issue but find that the temp fix thread is dead. Another person mentions a site (bukeyes perf) but I did nto see the part there. Can someone point me to the fix for the temp fix and explain why I should use it and secondly does anyone have directions on removing the switch. I was told to move the tank back and that there is a security bolts to deal with while another mentioned that he took his off without moving the tank and took 15 minutes. Can someone clarify before I start this week? Any help would be appreciated. Jb
  2. I have the right anti-dive valve on th front fork that started leaking at the weep hole. Does anyone know how to fix or where to get one as I found none on e-bay. I have replaced the o-rings and that didnt fix problem.
  3. While trying to tighten my radio antenna on my 99 RSV I accidently tightened the wrong nut and snaped the antenna off the mounting nut. Has anyone ever done this? Is there a cheaper fix then the $100 replacement? Or does anyone have a spare mast lying around? HELP!!!! Big Mike
  4. First off, after 1800 miles on my new RSTD the rear end started clicking today. Taking it Tuesday morning to the dealer to have rear splines greased and some part filed down. Apparently this a common problem so not real upset. Anyway, my front brakes squel like a pig when coming to a stop. Is there anything that can be done to fix this?
  5. doing my first tranny rebuild and got it upside down and another parts bike on its side the guys at the xs/xj site say this is easier. got the clutch out and middle drive out and shifter cover off and "think" I see the problem one the one I am trying to fix but not sure if a) the parts bike tranny is good and, b) the best way to remove the trannys and shift drums. anyone with experience with a xs1100 tranny I would love to hear from you.
  6. No, not the swimsuit!! The odometer works good, no noises at all. The speedometer works no more, after a very heavy rain the bike was out in the other day. I'm hoping things will dry out inside, and I'll be able to keep the Law from writing me speeding tickets!! However, in case I need Plan B, anyone have any ideas/suggestions of how to fix said problem?? Thanks to all!!
  7. I"ve heard about ride on for the tires. Questions: How much is it and where can I find it? Does it affect the balance of the tire? (I'm assuming you ride with it allready in your tire unlike fix a flat.) What exactly is it supposed to do? Any testimonials from anyone? Thx in advance for the insight.
  8. Found time to install the rails this morning. Yup, had to redrill the mounting holes in the rail. 30 minute job into several hours. They are now even and set just right. Thank you to the members who posted this needed fix. Yamaha could do much a much better job of quality control. hh http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t51/runeight/0043-1.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t51/runeight/0062.jpg
  9. I am always going back to this link when I have questions www.gadgetjq.com since I also have a 05' Nomad. Even though John put this together for Kawasaki Vulcans there is alot of useful information for adding the extra items to any motorcycle. I am sure some of you folks have already been here, but for those that have not....happy reading. So check out Gadgets Fix it page... Regards Dave
  10. I knew I should have ridden the bike to work today. This was not what I wanted to fix this evening.
  11. Okay folks, maybe ya'll can help. I know it's not a Venture but I gotta crawl before I walk so here goes.......... My V-Star quit running last summer. Took it in to a bike mechanic, says the CDI unit went out. Finally replaced that a few weeks ago. Still won't start. Have had ppl tinkering to avoid having to take it up to Fargo and get raped for a simple job. The latest is it has no spark but it's arcing somewhere like where the seat goes but Bones (Tinkerer #3) can't find where. He's more of a motor man than an electrical man. I just know it's something so simple that a guy could look it up and bam there's the problem and it's an easy fix. I just haven't found that right guy. Just for taking the tank off Fargo would charge like an hour labor and it took Bones 3 minutes to get it off so you see my problem. Gawd do I wish it was Labor Day W'end and I was at Pork in the Pines and my bike was the pity bike! But it's May and it's riding time, and gas is through the friggin roof and more importantly, I've got the itch dammit, I wanna ride! I know ya can't fix a bike without it in front of ya so suggestions are all I'm asking for. H E L P ! Brandi
  12. I was so happy 6 weeks ago when i traded my 1100 for my 04 RSV. it was the last bike i'll need. Well now i want to get rid of it, the noise ruins my ride. has anyone tried wraping the lower end in insulation? Will yamaha give me a I basket and i'll install it. i don't want to pay for a fix that won't work. has anyone tried filing the gears? if i can't fix this i'm getting a HD. dissapointed.........
  13. WOW, that sound drives me NUTS! I bought a 2006 Venture about a month ago, and the noise is REALLY interfering with the pleasure riding usually brings. Sounds like standing in a swamp full of peeper frogs!!!!! A couple of questions, first, does anyone know of a good dealer to work with about the "I" basket replacement in my area? I live in Connecticut and the dealer I bought from is in Long Island. second, what recourse would I have if whatever dealer I choose doesn't offer the fix under warranty? I don't suffer fools gladly, I work too hard for my money to take any "we can't help you" bs. I absolutely LOVE the bike, but the noise is making me think of a Gold Wing or H-D Thanks, this is a VERY helpful and friendly forum. Marty S
  14. I hope there is an easy fix, but I don't think so. Was going to take the beast out and bingo the front tire was flat. That brand new metzler was doing the pancake impersonation. No nail and a full bottle of Ride-on, that tire can't be flat????? It was and the air was coming out of the base of the valve stem. There are two nuts on the base of the valve stem and one appears to be a locking nut. Is there a way to tighten it or does the tire need to be removed to fix it. I tinkered with the stem, but it turns and does not appear to be tightening. Any thoughts?? joe
  15. Had a problem with my car tire today. Picked up a machine screw... This should fix it up OK.
  16. There is a small heat shield on my exhaust by my right footpeg. It had cracked and been fixed by a PO, but it is cracking again now. The shield seems to be part of the larger exhaust, and so not easily replaceable. Given that it is chrome, is this something that can be welded back together, or is it a soldering job, or is there some other fix like JB weld that might hold this together. Thankfully, it isn't highly visible, since getting that chrome look back may not be easy either.
  17. Well it's finally arrived,, 56,000mi and under moderate to hard acceleration it's starting to jump, first I thought it was a miss but now after reading here it's the tranny problem. It's a shame the bike looks pretty good for an 83. What all would I have in parts to fix this myself? I may just tear it down and part it out. Or sell the whole bike if the offer is right. Isn't it purdy!
  18. Just did a quick fix for my side panel on my 1989 Venture. Thought I would share in case others need the info. Forgive the first picture as it turned out just a little fuzzy, but it is a picture of the original tab. Picture 2 is the tab after the fix. Basically, the tab broke off right at the base, so I cut a little of the tip off, and drilled a hole straight through. Used a 1 inch 6x32 round headed screw with a washer and nut and loctite. Hope it helps someone.
  19. This isn't about my scoot but I suppose it could apply. Seems I have a coolant leak at the head gasket just where the head meets the block at the right front of the engine. It's a V8 Dodge 5.2L. There's no coolant getting into the oil and doesn't appear to be any combustion gasses getting into the cooling system (yet). The leak is very slow. I tried a couple inexpensive (less than $15) "stop leak" products but that doesn't appear to work. Been reading about a product called "Thermagasket". I know anything like this is only going to be a "temporary" fix and I'll eventually have to replace the head gasket (which I can do myself) but my garage is full of other stuff including my scoot and I really would prefer to wait until warmer weather before tackling this. Has anyone on here had any experience with "Thermagasket" or other similar such products that you'd care to share? I'm hoping to at least temporarilly fix this leak but I find it a waste of time trying one product and then the next only to find they don't work...would rather try something that at least someone I know has had success with. Thanks

  21. what is the best product to fix cracked plastic parts on a 1st gen
  22. Although Yamaha hasn't made any announcements about the cure for the whine in the Venture Engines after looking around on the Star site I find they do indeed have a fix for the whine...... http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/apparel/apscitemdetail/2/102/all/all/3856/detail.aspx Cheap too. Jerry
  23. Due to my 86VR letting some rust into carbs & having a tech reline tank, redo carbs/diaphragms, tuneup, new brakes, tires, etc., etc., my Nav said she didn't trust scoot. After some rides, she became comfortable again. Then, a throttle cable broke 55 miles from home, quick fix, but she lost faith. Now I have chromed-out scoot with nothing to be fixed but, now that it should be a worry free ride, it has to go. Now it's in the VR Classifieds for $4400. [$100 less than I have into it]. She insists a newer scoot is a better scoot, despite the huge expenses & new parts I put into this bike. Even if I get a 5 yr old scoot, most of the important parts will be 5 years older than what I have now, not to mention the numerous upgrades I'll never see again. Especially, the $2500. I spent on parts/techs, this year, doing the work to be certain it would be perfect. Anyway, I went & did it. Then it goes to Ebay until sold. It'll sell, but then I have to get a __?________ with all the problems that come with it....& start fixing everything....LIKE I JUST DID. It'll cost me many needless dollars, but Mama 'must' be kept happy. There's nothing left to fix on my scoot to make it any better, so this makes NO SENSE, to me, anyway. I hope whoever gets it keeps in touch, with a tab of near zero maintenance for years to come. Then I can say "Told you so."
  24. hi all i have been trying to make reseravations at bingermans camping resort at kitchener, ontario for a couple of days now. the 800-565-4631 and the 519-744-1002 #'s are at the caming site and they are closed for the season. the 519-744-1555 is a working phone # but at the main park office. also the online reservation site has not been working. called the 519-744-1555 this morning and explaned the problem. was transfered over to a mr. lou who said the last person/employee left that part of the resort yesterday. had told him about some problems up there. mr. lou said he will call me back later today / tomorrow and will take care of my reservation and fix the problems. if you are having any problems give them a day or so to fix things. but the 519-744-1555 is a good contact #. thanks to reiny rooster and any others up there taking on this big project. what has happen is beyond their control. i am lookig forward to make this big and far ride. my 13 y.o is really excited about this trip i've taken her to the big bend park area here in texas, but this ride will really putting her to the iron butt test. peace to all don
  25. Yes it's about a second gen... I just recently puchased my 2004 Midnight RSV. I was wonderering about the handling of the bike and that was answered in previous threads. To say the least I am getting a new set of avons tomorrow. My questions are: Is there a fix for the low speed wabble? I have notice a whine in the drive tran. is that normal? Thanks for all your responses.
