  1. Thanks to oldguy(Will) from North Bay Ont for the free rad,rad cover and the radio mount plastic that he gave me to start fixing my damaged 87 Venture and the offer of accommodations(which we reluctantly turned down--friend felt uncomfortable accepting accommodations from someone he didn't know.). A friend and I rode up there(280miles one way) on Wed. and rode back on Thurs this week. What a nice LLLOOONNNGGG ride on a not so comfortable bike(2000 Road-star). Will start replacing these parts as soon as it cools down in garage. Still looking for rest of fairing pieces yet. Will keep looking tho and with luck might get back on road some day.
  2. Went over to Don's(B2dad) this morning and got 'dem gauges installed...finally. Took me about 4 hours, working at a comfortable pace. I needed the practice for MD. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Image1.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Image2.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Image3.jpg The B2 Bomber is good to go for the trip to MD!!
  3. So...I've added the Baron risers....seemed to make the ache in my shoulder blades a little better. I find that there is less of an ache when I extend my arms almost fully (not quite locked), than when I ride with arms bent (45 degrees). I do have a backrest that is quite comfortable (thanks DiamondR)! Shirt sleeves are about 37'ish... I'm thinking about removing the risers, and changing out the handlebars. I hear folks speak highly of the Flanders.....Any other suggestions? How does one figure out how much rise and "pull back" is needed on the bars to be comfortable? So I thought I would ask the TALLER "experts"! What say ye?
  4. Got to take a test ride on a '09 Voyager. Was out for about an hour ... the only thing I didn't get to test was climbing hills. Following is just my opinion... Pro's Well balanced, ample power, comfortable seating/leg/arm position. Feels and handles more like my '85 Venture without the top heaviness ... in other words, it felt a lot lighter. Handled the twisties nicely and felt stable when going over bumps in a twisty. Smooth ride on the highway @ 160km/h (thanks to a 6th gear). Rumbles along nicely in 5th at lower speeds and accelerates reasonably well. Great stereo sound quality. Nice exhaust sound Seat is very comfortable. Engine/drivetrain is relatively quiet compared to the RSV Nina experienced less wind buffeting than on the RSV No "buzzing" feeling in hands or feet Seating is lower for both rider and passenger. I felt a lot more "in control" with this bike...it was very easy to drive and a lot better in parking lot maneuvers than the RSV. Frame mount fairing .... bike is very stable in turbulence. Tracks very well. Con's It's a V-twin so under hard acceleration, you know it's a V-twin. Lots of reflection of the chrome parts on the tank in the windshield. Seating/leg position for passenger is not as comfortable as the RSV (at least according to Nina but she is taller than most women) I experienced more side wind than on the RSV Not as powerful as the RSV but it still gets ya going quick enuf. Clunky shifting, probably just a "nature of the beast" Definately not as smooth as the RSV but that's what ya get with 2 cylinders versus 4 although I found the Harley Ultra just as smooth. Overall I like the bike and it would be a strong contender if I was to sell the RSV although if Nina had found the seating position better .... hmmmm ... we might have... dang, I do like that scoot...
  5. Oh my goodness!!!!:dancefool:What a difference!!!! Got them back on last night and headed out for about a hour ride on Old Mission Peninsula and WOW. Its like a totally different seat. So much more comfortable!! I have to say this is probably the best upgrade I have done to the pearl thanks so much Rick you really saved my a**!!! Bring on that Saddlesore1000!!!!!!!
  6. Now that I've finally learned to attach pic's I thought I'd show you my other hobby. Her name is Grace and she's a 6 year old Belgian draft horse. I'm a big guy 6' 4" and 250 lbs so I never would have felt comfortable riding a smaller horse. She goes out for training in april and I can't wait to get her back. Horseback on sat. motorcycle on sunday. woohoo!
  7. Any tips on replacing bars to a more comfortable style? What works - what don't Bull
  8. I would certainly not want to replace the RSV with it. I just can't see my wife..or me for that matter...being as comfortable on it as the RSV but if I could justify ONE MORE BIKE to own along with the RSV, this would be it...no doubt. http://www.webbikeworld.com/BMW-motorcycles/2010-bmw-r-1200-gs/
  9. Well I got the word, and Im laid off. Company says their gonna try again in the spring but then they never asked the supervisors for our phones and credit cards before. Rumers are that there closing the doors for good and lots of things are looking like that could be true. So wife and I are putting up the HOUSE For SALE sign and were looking south for work. Looking around Tenn, N or S carolina and W.V. I am a excavating supervisor and also have a Michigan builder's liacense that I plan to switch over to which ever state we move too. Wife still working at a local t.v. station and thank goodness we still have insurance but things look rough there too. I dont expect to start with a new company as a super or even close and willing to take anything decent. Anyone have any leads that may help , they sure would be appreciated. Asking for prayers too, to be honest im scared silly, been in this house for 22 years and raised our family here. I just cant imagine leaving it and moving away but ive been trying to get myself comfortable with the idea for the past few months. Thank you in advance
  10. I have bad hips, so my Venture is getting pretty tough, especially at intersections 2up. So, I have been thinking of going the trike way. I rode my first Trike yesterday, finally, after looking at them and asking about them for a year or so. First off, I stopped at one of the local HD dealers to look at their 'from the factory' trikes - they didn't have one. The salesman told me they sell them as fast as they come in. So, I went to a local shop that sells & installs several Trike kits. The guy was wonderfully helpful! He let me test drive one and said to take it for a half hour or so. 'Enjoy yourself'. So, my wife & I climbed on and took it down the street heading for the Interstate. - I didn't get that far. I just didn't feel very stable with the steering. My wife said that she felt like she was being thrown side to side. It was me trying to get used to the handling - NO Leaning and turning with the handlebars. The trike rode wonderful and I'm sure that one gets used to the handling, but for the 15 minutes I was on it, I didn't care for it. I only got the trike up to about 45ish, I didn't feel comfortable enough to go faster. So, I told the guy thanks for his time and letting me try one, but I will wait until I absolutely HAVE to have to either give up riding or get a trike. The guy said he understood, but assured me that if I took the bike for a longer ride, I would get comfortable with it. I just don't think I am ready to give up on my leaning yet. It's just my opinion, I am in no way meaning to bash trikes. They just aren't for me, (yet). craigr
  11. Been wondering for a while whether feet forward or feet under would be more comfortable for touring. I've seen quite a number of comments that Gen 2 are more comfortable than Gen 1. In what way are they more comfortable? There are a lot of people who have gone from Cruiser style forward controls to Sport Touring bikes with controls under or even further back than Gen 1 and find them better. Seems to me sitting with your weight more on your thighs would be more comfortable than with it on your tailbone. This is a serious question and not intended to stir up any controversy. Of course, a little controversy is always a bonus.
  12. Does anyone know where I could pick up a '90-93 rear shock suspension w/ grease fittings already in it? I'm not real comfortable about drilling into my 89 to do the install!
  13. What cruising speed are you comfortable with? When I had my 1st Gen's, I enjoyed a steady speed of 70 mph and Now with my 2009 Klr 650 I found that crusing at 65 mph feels just right
  14. If any of you big guys need a jacket, I just placed a Fieldsheer High Temp 4XL jacket on Ebay, item number 120409437170. It is a mesh jacket that has very good air flow in warm temperatures and has a warm, waterproof liner that can also be worn alone as a jacket. With the liner in it is very comfortable down into the 20's. The jacket is in perfect condition and has been used very little. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Fieldsheer-High-Temp-Mesh-Motorcycle-Jacket-4XL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a0Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem120409437170QQitemZ120409437170QQptZApparelQ5fMerchandise
  15. I have been looking around for a Pillow top seat for my 2005 RSV. I have the corbin seat that was on my bike when I got it but since my hip replacement it just isn't comfortable for long rides anymore. If anyone one has one and would like to sell it please drop me a line. Thanks Steve
  16. I've read pretty much everything I can about the car tire on the rear of the bike. I'm willing to give it a try. Now, the question is, is there anyone in or near VA to give me a hand? I'm even willing to come to you to put it on. I've never done a tire change and would just feel more comfortable with someone that has done it.
  17. OK, who knows all about Visco Elastic Polymer, Padding material. ???? I found its being used for Race Car Seats, supposed to be comfortable !! Anybody know the details on the this stuff ?? From what I have been able to find it came on the market about 3 years ago. Supposed to be the Cats Meow, for comfortable seating ??
  18. I had a 99 Venture from 99 to 2003. It was by far the most comfortable bike for putting the miles on of any I have owned. I currently have an 01 Kaw Vulcan 1500. It's nice for shorter rides but doesn't fit me as well as the RSV did. I traded the RSV in 2003 because I got tired of always having a fairing in front of me. Of course then they had to go and come out with the new tour deluxe shortly after that! I am looking into the RSTD in the future, but I wonder if it would be as comfortable as the Venture. Part of what I liked about the Venture was it's seat. The RSTD uses a different seat. I know the seat could probably be swapped fairly easiliy. Is there any other difference in suspension or seating position between the bikes?

    To Trike or Not

I own (and love my) VStar 1100 Silverado. I have been seriously considering an RSV upgrade because I want to spend a lot of my future on the road smelling all those roses I never took the time to sniff earlier in life. However, as I move into my seventies in a couple of years, I wonder if I will be that comfortable on this big steed. So, another option might be to keep my current scoot, and go with a GoldWing Trike or an RSV Trike. (Frankly, all the goodies plus reverse give the GW the lead in my thinking.) The question I have is: What is touring like on a Trike? Is it as enjoyable/comfortable as on a 2-wheel RSV or GW? I know it is different and certainly not the ‘rush’ one gets from leaning through the twisties. But will I find it fun and at the end of a day of riding will I be as comfortable as I would be on an RSV or will I be wondering why I am not in a cage? I really want to ride, but I want it to be fun and enjoyable at the end of the day. Am I asking too much? Oldsalt
  20. Looking for some input on driver seat, longer trip comfort. I did about 450 miles today and while I find the riding position very comfortable (Baron's Risers are terrific) the last 100 miles are pretty rough. I stopped a few times for drinks/gas but getting back on can be pretty uncomfortable especially after I've been in the upright position for a couple of hours. I wear heavy denim jeans and the most discomfort I experience is on my upper hamstrings, almost like they are worn raw. Today was pretty mild temp wise but if it was the normal 90+ degree day and I was sweating like a fire hydrant I would have wanted to walk home. I've read more than a few posts where RSV riders say it is the most comfortable bike they've ridden and doing an all day trip is not too hard on them comfort wise so I guess I'm looking for tips on improving my comfort. I like to get out there and ride until the cows come home but feeling uncomfortble on a long trip is not much fun. Is there a much more comfortable after market seat, are leathers/textile pants more comfortable, how bout a driver's back rest, worth it? Thanks for any input.
  21. To make a long story short, I now own a Goldwing. Never fear, I have not deserted the RSTD. It is beatifully repaired, the man a Paragon Customs did an awesome job. Anyway, I met a man that had an 03 Goldwing for sale and he asked me what I would give him for it. I gave him a very low number and he took it. Could have knocked me over with a feather....so I had to write a check. Well yesterday Linda and I were out on the bikes, (she has an 05 GW) and I took out mine for the first time. In some respects it is a fantastic machine...in others it is a dud. I liked the power and torque...get on it at 30 mph in 5th gear and it just goes. The brakes are great and it handles well. Has great CB and am/fm radio. Good wind protection and great storage capcity. Mine has highway foot rests (I will get pics) and no matter how I move around, I just can't seam to get real comfortable. Then it dawned on me...this bike is cramped...maybe I have to get used to it. The long and short of it is...I can see why people like the Venture's and the RSTD's...they are roomy, comfortable bikes that are fun to ride. If mama Yama would make a few improvements...they could blow the bags off of Goldwings. Better electronics, fuel injection, better lights and electrical capacity, and way better brakes....I am satisfied with the power on the RSTD and the handling. The RSTD is way easier to work on. I put a new air cleaner on the GW and it is a LOT of work! NOBODY should ever feal inadequate riding next to a GW...they are not perfect and need some improving ,too. Mybe I'll keep it, maybe I won't. Just my first impressions
  22. I have a couple questions. I have a 07 RSV. Just got my 2 sets of J&M Elite 584 Series headsets. Is there anyone in (preferably) Edmonton that can install these in full face Shoei helmets. Anyone hear that knows how to install them professionally knows that there is some cutting to do. I am not comfortable in doing it. There is some pretty stiff plastic in the ear area. I am hoping that there is someone hear that has done this a few times and has gotten over being uncomfortable doing the install. Thanks, Greg
  23. Looking at getting a 1st gen venture. any advise ? wife wants something comfortable and would like floor boards and a radio..
  24. I have a 2007 RSV and the drivers seat is not working for me. After 50 or so miles, my hips are hurting, I'm developing monkeybutt, etc. But my wife loves her seat. I've added a sheepskin pro pad to the drivers seat and that helps a lot, but still not comfortable for a long ride. So I'm open to suggestions. Does anyone make replacement seats for the driver alone? I also already have a 3rd party drivers backrest and don't want to lose it. Best Regards, Leonard
  25. I recently purchased a 2006 RSV. I really like it. The ride is plush and I like all the other ammenities. My wife really likes the big back seat. BUTTTTTTTT... I am a big guy and the driver's seat isn't comfortable at all. It offers no lower back support and that hump on the front of it does a number on the family jewels. Is there something more comfortable out there? I can probably "break my body in" to the hump in the front of the seat but I need more back support. I see there are driver backrests out there. I was hoping someone here might have one for sale that I can buy so I won't be out the full $250-300 for a new one if it doesn't work out for me... Thanks SpEEd Safely CG
