  1. hey everybody i need some help please i have a 2003 midnight venture with 87000 kl on it and i am the original owner. it vibrates when i cranck it in 3,4,5 gear . now im pretty sure that it could be the u joint on it but some other buddys have a difference of opinion on this as they say my carbs need to be sinked. so lets take a poll carbs or u joint
  2. I am in the middle of getting Dave Pankows bike ready to roll for the season. I have the carbs off and #2 air/fuel screw isn't coming out. I have tried everything and it's just not going to come. I dont need a whole bank of carbs, just #2 the others came out. What I need is if any of you 1st genners have even just the body of #2 carb that I can transfer all the other parts into. This is an '86 1300 and I can use all the help I can get, thanks for the time
  3. I posted yesterday about a fuel drip from my carbs. Today I went out to run the bike and possibly check out the fuel leak. The bike was running for a couple of minutes when all of a sudden I am getting antifreeze coming from everywhere. It is dripping from the upper and lower hoses as well as the petcock and from behind some of the covers as well as the breather assembly under the carbs. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
  4. Hello all, I am fairly new to the forum and this is my first post. I have a 1996 Royal Star Tour Classic and I am having carburetor problems. I have gas leaking out of 2 of the carbs. They are leaking from a screw near the bottom of each of the carbs. I was having problems with my idle lately so I tried the Seafoam enema and let the bike sit a day and then started it up. I was hoping that this would cure the idle problem and stop the gas leak but it did not cure the leaking. I am not sure what the purpose of the screws are so I am reluctant to try and give them a turn or two to see if the leakng will stop. Can anyone clue me in on the purpose of these screws and I would appreciate any input of ideas as to what my carb problem may be. Thanks Bob
  5. Hi everyone, I've got an absolute nightmare on my hands and need some ideas, suggestions or whatever. I've got a 04 RSV that has'nt been ridden in two years because of dealership games. About 2 years ago the bike began to seriously lose power while riding to the point where i could not get it above about 15 or 20 mph. Lots of backfires and lots of raw fuel coming from the pipes (most of it from the left). After some investigation i found out it was most likely a stuck float and took it to Powersports dealership on Craig Rd. in North Las Vegas where they worked on it for 2 days and said they had fixed it. They told me it was a stuck float valve due to "bad gas" and that that was not covered under the warranty. They said they had tried a workaround to free the stuck valve. After charging me for "services not covered under the warranty" to the tune of 300 bills I got about 3 blocks before it started acting up again. Shortly thereafter, I took it to another dealership who told me the same thing and after 200 bucks they said they had fixed it. The next day it started all over again. After going through an exhaustive move to northern Nevada (in July no less!) I took it to the only Yamaha dealer in town they said they would fix it. I told them, as I had told the others, that the bike was under warranty and I was not going to pay for it. Well, they "fixed" it and charged me 250 dollars for parts and services not under warranty. I got about 2 hours of riding before it happened again. I called Yamaha and told them my tale of woe. I told them how angry and displeased I was with Yamaha and it's dealers. They said they would look into it and get back to me. They called me back and said they "talked" to the local dealership and wanted me to take the bike back there. Before I could take the bike back there, they announced in the local paper that they would no longer be selling or servicing Yamaha products. I don't want to sell the bike but that's what I'm about to do. I'm so angry I want to park the bike in front of Yamaha North America and blow it up! I don't have the technical expertise to fix it or balance the carbs. My poor bike has been sitting out all winter is not doing very well. The warranty has now expired and I'm gunshy of dealerships now. I love my bike and want to save it but I'm frustrated and don't know what to do.ANY suggestions would be helpful. I'm just about at the end of my rope. Thanks and ride safe, Don NV_Trucker randdo67@gmail.com
  6. I recently purchased a K&N filter for a sport bike I own. I have a Suzuki Katana 750. After buying it I had numerous guys in the sportbike field tell me that I should NEVER put a K&N on a bike that has carbs. Yet I have them on my Venture and have never had any issues. How much truth is there in this?
  7. Anyone in Gainesville,Fl. area that could help sycronize carbs on my 87 venture?
  8. Well with all the toys I have I am looking at getting an Ultrasonic cleaner for things like Carbs and such.I have had the carbs on my 84 cleaned with one when I first resurected it from near dead. My question is should I purchase one of these for the shop and what all can it be used for other things around the Muffin Shack or is it going to be just a shop use type of thing. Jeff
  9. Hello everybody. Well I followed your advice about the vibration problem in the passenger seat. I bought the Morgan Carbtune Pro and I used it today. As you can see in the photos below, my #1&2 carbs were way off from each other as well as from #3&4 which were almost even. I also discovered the two vaccum caps were cracked and replaced them. Goose, I did what you said about working with them at about 1k and up around highway rpms. This carbtune works like a gem. It was well worth the $95 U.S. that it cost me. And that included Air shipment from Ireland which took only 9 days from the day I placed the order. The bike runs and feels totally different now. It starts easier, idles smoother, which had to be lowered considerably from where it had been, and now my RK pipes sound a lot smoother on deceleration than they did before. Hopefully I will also see some mileage improvement like others have after synchronizing their carbs. This bike had 24k on it when I bought it last August and I doubt it had ever even been checked. It has 28k on it now and I hadn't even thought about it until you good folks on this site put me onto it. I'll be checking it every oil change from now on as it will only take about 20 minutes to do it now that I'm familiar with the location of everything involved. Thanks again for all your help.
  10. if i find some 32mm carbs in good shape sometime in the future, i was wandering how easily or difficult it is to adapt these to a 1996 rsstd? what other parts would i need to purchase or look for used, and what other tech tips will i need to know? any and all input will be appreciated. i know that this enhancement is supposed to make a major difference, and if i keep the bike, which i probably will, i will try to do this task. thanks, Mark.
  11. Well, now that the carbs are together, I tried in vain to start the thing today. It backfires out the carbs and exhaust, which is funny since it actually ran, albeit not well before the rebuild. It will fire and almost take off at times, but won't start. I am thinking that somehow the ignition timing has gotten out of adjustment. I have the instrument cluster off the bike, does that have anything to do with the ignition? Also, where is the ignition timing adjusted, if it can be? I also noticed the oil is like chocolate mousse. I filled the cooling system partially, but neglected to check the oil condition before i started messing with it, so the water may be from a previous encounter, and I am hoping there are no leaks into the case. Time will tell. Good news is that I have until January 5th to tinker with it.
  12. I had my 08 carbs worked on as they were leaking, and since then it idles very slow and has died on me a few times. Do I have to tear a bunch of stuff down to get to the idle screws and when I do this do they need synch again? and not ever seeing the carbs on one of these what ones am I looking for? thanks:crying:
  13. Well, I am finishing up my fourth carb and found that I need the two gaskets, which seem to be overly priced ($20 each) every where I look. Is there a cheaper place to find them? Especially the thick one under the idle enrichment valve. Also, it seems that the PO was kind enough to misplace the bowl drain screw for one of the carbs. Is it possible to find one of those somewhere as well? All the parts fiche places don't seem to show it as separate from the carb body. It might be that my eyes are failing me though....
  14. OK, this may take a while, but I'm going to start at the beginning and try not to miss anything, cause I'm not sure what may be important, and what isn't. Early this summer I was having some problems losing clutch fluid on my 2001 RSV. I kept topping off the master cylinder, but eventually I realized that it was leaking from the slave cylinder and ordered a rebuild kit. I ended up letting the bike sit for about 6 weeks before I had a chance to get together with my son (my semi-pro wrench) who lives in CA. We did the rebuild, got everything put back together, and wheeled it out of the garage to fire it up and take it for a test ride. It started right up, but after a short time running, I backed off the choke and it died. Started it again and the same thing. In spite of being plenty warmed up, it wouldn't run with the choke off. So I thought just a few cobwebs in the carbs, I'll take it for a run and blow 'em out. Well, in spite of running it for a mile or so through the neighborhood it never was able to run without the choke on. I wasn't sure what to do next, so I just parked it. Schedules were busy, one thing led to another and before long - it was November!!! Summers in Houston aren't the greatest time for riding, but this fall we've had some awesome weather, so I decided it was time to get the scoot running again. The battery had gone dead and would no longer take a charge, so I replaced it. (and purchased a Battery Tender) I figured maybe the air filters could use a look (why in the heck do they make them so hard to get to!!!) so I pulled them, and found that on one the plastic base had warped and had separated from the paper filter. Very bad! There were even a couple of leaves caught in it. No telling how much crud may have passed through and into the carbs. I replaced them with a new set of K&N's. Next I removed the tank and pulled the air boxes above the carbs. Nothing too obvious, but with no real desire to pull the carbs off, I decided to just spray them down real good with carb cleaner and put it all back together to see what I had. Putting those boxes back on it was another PITA! You can't see most of the boots and I'm really not sure I got them all seated properly over the carbs. Anyway, I went ahead and hooked up the tank and fired her up. Pretty much the same as before, or worse. It starts and runs with the choke on, but it never fully warms up to that higher revving state that it's supposed to reach with the choke on. If I turn the choke off it dies, and if I even begin to move the throttle, it also dies. And also, before I started all this I poured a full can of Sea-Foam into about 2/3rds of a tank of gas. My next thought is to look for the fuel filter to replace that. Any yes, the fuel pump clicks when I turn on the ignition and seems to be functioning. It will run at a low idle for as long as I want with the choke on. Like I said, I'm not really comfortable pulling the carbs off of the bike myself, so does anyone have any suggestions for a barely competent wrench, or should I just load her up and take her in to a pro? All ideas appreciated.
  15. I was bored today and my mind was wandering and somehow I wandered onto this question. OK so I know that the 2nd gens have heated carbs, but how do they work? I didn't see anything in the owners manual. I am not having any problems, just curiosity.:puzzled:
  16. Some improvements made in the long saga of getting a stripped 83 back on the road. With a new TCI, I've got good spark on all four cylinders. Bike will fire up when I shoot carb cleaner into the throats, but dies shortly afterwards. Like it isn't getting any fuel at all. I start it with the choke half-way, throttle slighly cracked open. I've pulled the carbs, took apart, cleaned, and put back together. Using a gravity fed tank to get gas to the carbs. Wondering a couple of things: 1) Carbs are certainly out of sync as I stripped them all the way down. Could being out of time that far prevent it from idling, even roughly? The sliders all move in and out smoothly when the engine idles briefly with the carb cleaner. 2) Do I need to be using the fuel pump to provide a pressurized shot of fuel into the float bowls? This question hit me yesterday, always assumed the gravity tank would work fine, but you know what they say about "assumption."
  17. I had an RSV from 1999 to 2003 for 48,000 miles. I never had any issues with the carbs gumming up during storage or getting badly out of balance. In the next few years I may buy another touring bike and really did like my Venture but I'm having a hard time with the thought of buying a new bike that isn't fuel injected. I had FI on my 02 Nomad and had no issues with it. But like I said I didn't have issues with the RSV either. My current bike is a Vulcan 1500 carb model. On that the carb doesn't bother me much because there is only 1 of them. The Venture has a lot of carbs to have issues with if you have issues. How expensive is it for a dealer to remove and clean the carbs if needed? On the Vulcan it cost $250 for a cleaning and rejetting. How common or rare is it for a RSV to have carb issues? Would you let it being carburated keep you from buying one in this day and age of most new bikes being injected?
  18. Due to medical conditions most of this years touring was none. I finally got cut loose from the physicians and finally got my hands around the handle bars while my wife was gone so she couldn't see what was happening! I hit the starter and the bike started and was trying to run but just couldn't. It would only run with the choke engaged. When parked I put stabil in the gas and did everything I usually do when I know that the bike will be parked for any period. As it happened I was not able to ride all summer. Now I can do limited rides. I am thinking the carbs should be cleaned. It is a 2000 MM with 65,000 miles and never had anything done to it but change the oil and fill the tank. It absolutely ran perfect when parked. I feel like I have abused it by letting it sit for 4 months. I guess my question is how difficult is it to pull the carb assembly and overhaul carbs? Do the carb parts come as a kit or do the parts have to be ordered piece meal? Is their anything I should be aware of before starting this? I am not going to be doing the removal myself, the work will be done by my 12 yoa grandson under my direction. Any thoughts or input is appreciated.
  19. I recently had my bike towed down from Georgia to Florida. When it arrived the gas was not shut off and it ran terrible. The choke had to be open slightly to even get it running. Tech looked at bike... found battery cables loose but said all carbs needed cleaning and spark plugs replaced. I have 11,000.00 miles on bike... never had this problem before always ran great. Also Yamaha Tech charged $100.00 hr to fix carbs... whats your take on this ? Any suggestions about gas/ carbs ?
  20. Are there any special proceedures needed to store the Venture away for the winter? Do I need to run the carbs dry, or can I just condition the fuel? Other than keeping the battery charged, and I dont run the carbs dry, should I start it once in awhile in the winter months? Thanks in advance for the helpful information
  21. Yea, I haven't been hanging out here because I have been in another forum that deals with Mrs. GigaWhiskey's new to her bike. NEway, this guy just bought a clean looking CB550 and it stopped running on him right after he got it home. This is his first bike so he surely does have the ability to mess something up. A couple of members have him taking his carbs all the way apart. This guy has no idea if he has a dirt in the tank blocking the petcock tubes or fuel getting to the carbs or spark getting to plugs or a blown fuse or any of the basic things most of us will go through for something that could be really minor. You think he even has a sync tool, LOL, doubt it. Well, I said my peace in the thread so how it goes is how it goes. Btw, these things are sooooo easy to work on. Tank off in about 15 seconds, maybe 15 hours on ours, lol. I have no probem taking this CB750 to the frame for a powder coating, would not dream of it on mine.
  22. I'm putting my '87 VR engine up for sale and would appreciate someone giving me the weight of these engines w/o carbs.
  23. I pulled my Bub Sleeper slip-ons off earlier today to wrap packing around the baffles and noticed a considerable amount of black soot on the right side baffle and none on the left side. I'm assuming that the right side (which ever cylinders, carbs, etc. exhaust though it) is running too rich. Would a carb sync take care of this? Thanks
  24. Raining today and thought I would change the air filters and sync the carbs. Really no problem, except that I cannot seem to do it at 1000 rpms or 1050. I need it to be at about 2000 or above and it syncs perfectly. It is not that far off at 1000, but is seems this is what the manual calls for. Any ideas or suggestions? Any problems leaving it this way?
  25. I have had a synch tool for some time and finally took the time to even my carbs up. It was much easier than I thought, even though I've done quite a few carbs in the past. Ports were right there and you don't have to take off any body parts to get to them. I had some popping out the exhaust ever since I've had the bike and it got worse when I did the carbs. The reason I'm writing here is to encourage those that have put off synching the carbs and stopping up the AIS to get with it!! It took me all of 5 minutes to put the stoppers in the AIS system. I did what is described in the tech section. It actually takes longer to warm up the Venture than it does to synch the carbs. Get with it and get it done!! Mine runs better than ever now and with no popping and a great idle. All the money I saved I can buy me some chrome or something.
