  6. First, have you seen the answers on Death Valley ? http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=18858537#post18858537 I have read several times about a procedure outlined below. I had a link to a post in another truck forum I belong to, but can not find it. ------ The procedure is very much the same as removing rust but with different chemical. First, degrease completely and scrub thoroughly with detergent. Mix 1 cup of Muriatic acid with 3 gallons of water in a plastic bucket. NOTE; ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER. NEVER WATER TO ACID !!! (It WILL explode) Hang two or three copper wires (#12 or larger) around sides of bucket. Connect these to ground of battery charger. Hang item to be dechromed in fluid with positive lead connected. Be sure part doesn"t touch ground wires. Within a few seconds or minutes, depending on thickness of chrome, it should come clean. More or less time as required. When finished, wash parts in mild soda water solution to neutralize acid. (Do this right way to prevent rust) As with any caustic acid, handle with care. Disposal can be done at a chrome shop for a fee. Careful disposal of what you have left over should be done with safety and the environment in mind. Nothing you should dump in the back 40. Prepare Hexavalent Chromium Plating Solution (chromic/sulfuric acid solution). Mix 100:1 chromic acid/sulfuric acid proportions: - Chromic acid crystals = 33 oz. (936 grams) - Sulfuric acid fluid = .33 oz. (9.36 milliliter) - Distilled water to make 1 gallon (3.79 liter). Mix solution in immersion tank used for materials testing and/or chemical treatments. Keep temperature for solution from 95 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (35 to 46 degrees Celsius) for decorative chrome. Keep temperature from 120 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit (49 to 66 degrees Celsius) for hard chrome. Handle process and chemicals carefully because the solution is capable of ignition and fire and of interacting with many other chemicals to produce additional risks. Run negative charge from a power source, such as a car battery, through the chromic plating solution. Attach positive anode to object intended for stripping and submerge the object into solution. Negative charge will pull the positively charged metals from the object. Rinse object in agitating running water, and, then, rinse again.
  7. Sorry guys.. It took forever to arrive by dog sled from the north. Showed up while I was out of town for a funeral, which had brought my daughter and granddaughter into town. (priorities ) We were supposed to have a gathering view tonight but that looks canceled due to the birth of IronHorse Ike's first Granddaughter 2 days ago, since he and his son-in-law were two of the partiers...uhm..I mean viewers. I will send it off and put my name on the bottom of the list for a later date. Bill
  8. This is too funny..even scary I think if you offer him a $50.00 DQ gift card, 20 gallons of Ben & Jerry's and a new pair of pink floppy slippers, you could get him to haunt a different member.... :ICshocked: :ICwink:
  9. I guess the question is... What's it worth to you ? ????????????????????????????????????????????????
  10. I knew my impact wrench wouldn't help after using a breaker bar and pipe on the end. I was afraid something would give and somebody would get hurt. Don't have a milling machine and was afraid a torch might ruin the chrome. Hey.. I got the job done, just took a little longer than you high tech guys
  11. Several weeks ago I finally got around to removing the hitch off of my 87 and putting it on my 89 so I could use it for a PGR flag mount. The removal and reinstall was pretty cut and dry taking only a couple of hours, including a short trip to Ace for some different bolts. The next "simple" "easy" "no problem" step was to take the ball off and bolt on my home made flag holder. That took probably 6 hours over 2 days. The bolt would not budge. I'm guessing the ball was installed back around 87 and had been in the Oregon area until 2 years ago. Even soaking with WD40 over night didn't help. I went from wrench to breaker bar to pipe wrench and using my Tahoe hitch to Sawzall to grinder. Ended up grinding the thing in two. What a job !
  12. Does the little tab on the outer edge go anywhere specific ? Thanks guys..the credit card seems to be a good idea.
  13. Hi all, I lost the right highway peg off my 89. Anybody have one of these that you want to part with ?
  14. If nothing else works out, I have 2 parts bikes with all the brake components on them.
  15. Hi guys. I have searched and read different threads about the install of new diaphragms. I bought a set for my 87 and hope to install them this weekend. I pulled one of the old ones out and have "practiced" the removal and reinstall with the old one. ' Looks like using a spray lubricant. What kind won't hurt the rubber ? How do you know if the inside seal that goes between the two "washers" is seated properly ? I was using the blunt end of two nail clippers to carefully separate the washers and then a small screw driver to push the rubber in between them. I am afraid the screwdriver might rip the rubber. Any specific info from your installation would be helpful. Thanks Bill
  16. There was another thread in the last couple of days, which I can not locate, but I did print off the information. I posted it below:
  17. You never know what is really true... but....This is interesting: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/05/23/man-stranded-in-desert-builds-motorcycle-out-of-his-broken-car/?ncid=txtlnkwbauto00000002 According to Merriam-Webster, ingenuity can be defined as "skill or cleverness in devising or combining" or "cleverness or aptness of design or contrivance." We'd say that's an apt description of a Frenchman named Emile who reportedly found himself stranded in the deserts of Northwest Africa after breaking a frame rail and a suspension swingarm underneath his Citroën 2CV. What to do? Why, disassemble the broken hulk and build yourself a motorcycle from its pile of parts, of course! As the story goes, Emile was able to use the inventive machine to escape the desert, though not before convincing the local authorities that he wasn't an insurgent and paying a fine for importing a non-conforming vehicle... Since Emile was the only soul in the area, nobody has been able to confirm the veracity of the events that led to the little French runabout's conversion into a makeshift motorcycle. That said, judging by the images you can see here (apparently from the March 2003 issue of 2CV Magazine), this Citroën-bred two-wheeler does indeed exist, and it was definitely fashioned from parts scavenged from an old 2CV. Emile, wherever you are, we take our hats off to your real-life MacGyver skills, sir.
  18. With hot Arizona temperatures, My KLR650 would overheat the gas tank if I left the tank bag on it. Several times it got so hot that the gad would actually boil in the tank. I had never seen that happen before, but if the vent isn't venting correctly and the gas gets hot enough, it will build pressure and boil. Boiling gas in a tank is really interesting to see. Also, if your gas is ever boiling...be VERY careful about opening up the gas cap. Mine had so much pressure in it that when I opened it, it "blew" out through the filler neck all over the hot bike. I have never had that problem so far with any other bikes in Arizona.
  19. Since we know YOU weren't at MD and it was your evil twin workin' on the 2nd Gen, I would say you are in better condition than your "twin".
