Rear Trunk ??

For the '85 you will need the mounting rack from an '85. The rack will bolt on to yours directly. It is a nice mod to do as it gives you the larger trunk and it is still removable. '86 up are not removablebut you get the adjustable gackrest. The trunk rack has extra arms and the rear frame of the bike is different but the arms can be sawed off. The trunk mounting rack for all years is primarily the same base piece with parts added on to it for the '85 and more parts added to the '86 up... -

Ship the extra parts to Big Tom, he seems to want to collect them... PS yes, it's amazing how one thing leads to another. While my fairings are apart I might as well install the MK2 fairing frame so I can install the MK2 headlight I bought a year ago, etc.etc.etc...

OK picture 1 is the metering valve and brake line with bleed point attached, and picture 2 is the proportioning valve attached to the rear master... -

No, you are thinking of the proportioning valve on the rear master, which sends fluid to the front after the rear caliper engages and builds up a back pressure. The metering valve is physically located near the steering neck and has that last bleed point for bleeding the line from the back to the front. That bleed is the highest point on the line from the back to the front. It's pretty much an oriface for regulating flow to the front brake... -

OK not having a metering valve on my Mk1, where/how does it physically mount, and I assume (ass u me) that the arrow points downstream to the front caliper, right? Also, how does the bleedeer orient/mount? The picture in the service manual leaves a lot to be desired. Someone please post pictures, or if you happen to be local stop over. I promise to not let Big Tom near the garage that day...

Well, time has come to install all those great rebuilt parts I spent all winter on. Sooo, as requested, Spanky and Big TRom came over to help out. Tom had to pick up his bike from Pioneer Motorsports anyway, which is just around the corner, so over they came. Here's pictures of the afternoon: 1. Here they are eager to start 2. Big Tom has to properly prepare to do some serious work 3. Spanky is wondering "What the heck are we doing anyway?!!?" 4. Big Tom has a better way to work on stuff 5. Big Tom says "You want me to shove this thing where??" 6. Where the H3LL does this part go?? 7. Their work being done, they leave me with a few lose ends to tie up. 8. Uhhh, guys, there's a few things missing here, guys, where's my drill?

I'd say jump on it!!! It's worth that much just in parts alone. Fork seals aren't that big a deal to replace if you have any mechanical experience. The rough running may be fixed with a couple of cans of Seafoam and a new set of plugs and wires. You should probably have the carbs sync'ed after the seafoam treatment. There is also a possibility that the rubber diaphragms on the carbs have developed pin holes and may need replacing. There is an issue with 2nd gear on the '83's, the '84's, and the early '85's. I forget the actual serial number but it was somewhere in the 1400's that are the cut off. There is also a possibility that yours, being an '85 had that fixed under warranty a long long time ago. The issue is a thrust washer that was too flimsy and is replaced with a beefier one. All that happens is that it pops out of 2nd under hard acceleration. Some members just skip 2nd if it becomes a problem. We are talking around $800 to replace a $10 part... OK these bikes are good for way over 100,000 miles and are one of the most comfortable rides around. With ANY bike that age, you are going to have rubber parts that will give problems, such as the fiork seals, etc. It will be a good idea to flush both the brake system and xlutch system as this SHOULD be routine maintenance on ANY bike. The only downside is that the 1st gens are a tall bike but I'm sure you have discovered that by swinging a leg over. Bottom line, take it for a ride if you haven't already, and buy it. They normally would go for twice that price. You will find we are a bunch of knowledgeable people here and very very helpful (Except for some of those dreaded 2nd gen owners...) and a bunch of great fun loving people here Good luck and welcome aboard! -
