Annie and Al - I guess all good things must come to an end sometime and it is great to hear how much you enjoyed your travels around our countries and the people you have met. It takes a lot character to do what you two have done so congratulations to you both. It was great to show you around this part of Canada at the outset of your adventure. Hope your good memories fuel much happiness for both of you.

Ben, I bought a Nelson Rigg half cover based on previous feedback from members. It fits our 1st gens really well and also fits in a small pouch. I have used it every night so far (almost 28 nights) on our Venture West and it is a treat to have a dry bike in the morning and I also feel safer leaving the bike parked.

Yes, after 7200 km, we are now heading east, making our way back to Toronto from the west coast. We had the thrill of being led by Rocket on an overnight ride across the Vancouver Island mountains on the amazing road from Nanaimo to Tofino. We had the added pleasure of meeting, eating and riding with Sailor and his beautiful wife Janet for part of the trip. Here a a few pictures showing Sailor and his wife, all of us, Rocket by the ocean, Rocket enjoying a "Big Daddy burger with poutine, my wife dipping her feet in the ocean and Rocket and me staring at the ocean.

I stopped by to visit Charlie on my way west but missed him. Can't join you for now as we are still on our Venture West and will be gone another three weeks.

Kevin, we changed our route once again this morning (see our blog) so now we expect to ride from Kootenay Lake area to Kamloops area tomorrow and then down 99 to Vancouver the next day. Hope to be on the island Wed night or Thurs am for a few days. Been talking with Rocket about a ride to Tofino. Hopefully we can connect.

We just finished our 2nd week of our Venture West - so 3 weeks before we have to get back to Toronto. Still hope to make it to Tofino on Vancouver Island. What an amazing trip so far with outstanding weather - sunny days and not a drop of rain. We have rode 11 and 17 to Sault Saint Marie in Ontario, 22, 41, 26, 64, 28 and 2 through the Michigam UP, 2, 13 and 53 through Wisconsin to Duluth, 2, 73 and 53 through Minessota, 71 and 17 through Ontario again to Kenora, 1, 26 and 16 through Manitoba, 16, 40, 21 and 14 through Saskatchewan, 13, 20, 39, 22, 16, 93, 1A, 40, 22 and 3 through Alberta and we are now heading west on 3 from Fernie BC. My wife Anne has done a trip blog that includes some of our pictures. Those interested can view the blog (and commednt right in the blog if you wish) at: http://venturewest-evan-anne.blogspot.com/

We are into our second week of our trip west, now in Alberta heading towards Drumheller. The first 4000 kms have been great - fabulous weather and amazing scenery - and I will post some pictures. Today was also special as we met up with Road Haug (Jim) and his wonderful wife near North Battleford, Saskatchewan for lunch. Unfortunately, our route and timing didn't allow us to meet up with Friesman1 (Brian) in Regina and Sarges46 (Rick) in Brandon, Manitoba. We did stop at E-Fishin-C's back in Ontario but he was "gone fishin". This is an amazing forum as is Western Canadian hospitality.

While travelling along the Yellowhead Trail through Saskatchewan on our trip west, my exhaust noise got louder and still louder again after part of the chrome cover to the exhaust pipe broke away. The exhaust pipe from the collector had broken loose from the muffler and the muffler was left hanging with no support. The end of the exhaust pipe was rusted and broken away so badly that it couldn't be reconnected to the muffler. Truely an Oh Sh-- moment that could have ruined our trip west. The first picture shows the exhaust pipe with the muffler removed. Got lucky as the next town had a Canadian Tire Store (open on Sunday) where I bought an exhaust pipe coupler designed to reduce pipe size and some aluminum duct tape. After removing the original clamp at the mouth of the muffler and wrapping both the front few inches of the muffler and the last few inches of the exhaust pipe with the aluminum duct tape for a tight fit, I slid the coupler over the muffler and the exhaust pipe and bolted my muffler back in place. To my surprise, there is no exhaust leak and I think the joint is as strong as original. I would bet that mine isn't the only first gen with a wore out exhaust pipe under the chrome cover. This solution works so good that I might post it in the Poor Man Tips and Fixes section.

I'll admit Dave, I had my doubts, but no more!

We are leaving this weekend for our own "Venture West", departing from Toronto. My wife and I now have five weeks available so we hope to make it to the west coast. Have rode to the east coast a number of times but this is my first bike trip west. Plan to ride west mostly in Canada (eh) and back mostly in the US, likely by way of route 2 unless we also go to Yellowstone. Going north of Lake Huron and then through the Michigan UP before we turn north to Kenora/Winnipeg and then westward. Plan on spending some time in BC (Banff, Jasper, Kamloops, Kelowna areas). Will mostly motel but also do some camping. Hope to meet up with some fellow Venture Riders along the way and will invite your specific route and sightseeing suggestions as we go.

Great story and congratulations to you guys!

Same here. Had it mounted there for the last 3 years. Very easy to install and I like the location for viewing my GPS.

Been there Steve. In fact, my upper bearing was so dry it caused the bike to sort of wander down the road. You can get at the top bearing without removing your forks and major surgery (maybe a half hour). In my case, I didn't have new bearings to install so I just cleaned and repacked the top bearing. That was two years ago and my steering has been great since then. However, I hope to replace both bearing next week, before I leave for the west coast. While I am not a mechanic, I suspect the top bearing is more vulnerable to drying out and causing problems, but maybe that is not the case. Also, i like the idea of installing a zerk fitting in the steering column that is also described in this great forum.

What is the easiest way to insert a photo in a post?
Evan replied to Semi-retired's topic in Watering Hole
I find that I have to "downsize" my pictures before they meet this max size criteria. Wizard765 just sent me some software that can be downloaded from Microsoft (I think). Apparently, this give me the option to right click on any of my pictures and specify my downsizing choices. I haven't tried it yet. -
That's my experience too Steve.

Yea Earle, glad you are OK so far and good luck with the insurance claim. I really feel for you over the damage to your good looking VR and hope the end result satisfies you. -
Quite a journey Steve. Glad you are happy so far with your new 88VR after your long ride home. Mine has been great so far and I just turned 150,000 km's today. Looking forward to seeing you again.

WOW! Good catch Dave. Glad you were able to stop safely and not loose your windshield. Many years ago, I lost a windshield in a bad storm. It was actually blown off from a blast of wind and rain caused by an oncoming truck and in my circumstances (stuck in a passing lane), I had to keep on riding - with no windshield. Not a good experience.

Anne and I would like to add our congratulations and best wishes for many more shared experiences that make your hearts smile? So glad we got to know yuou folks a bit better at MD.
