  1. The poll is, to quote Arte Johnson, veerrryyy interesting. The most popular price [$22500] is what I would pay if I were in the position to buy new. But as my next bike will almost certainly be a trike, I have to buy used as buying one new just isn't going to happen. I can't justify putting $30k+ into a bike. And if I don't end up having to buy a trike, the next bike will alsmot certainly be a RSV/RSTD as all of the other touring bikes, most especially the GW or that Triumph are too tall. 32 in seat heights and 28 in inseams do not mix. Otherwise, I would have been hunting for a GW this past year+ instead of a RS. It will be interesting to see how this all comes out.
  2. I see what you mean. Someone really screwed up!!
  3. So just a "S" model this year, no "standard" version?? Also charcoal grey/silver over black? Wasn't that used in an earlier year? They do get hung up on somethings, don't they?? It's not as though I can afford a new one in any case. And if they want to put out a triked bike, why not do it to the Venture?? I do NOT like the triked Strat I've seen at the dealership, especially in dead white!!
  4. Harbers Cycles on eBay has a set of huge Emgo mirrors for Yamaha bikes. I have a set on my RSTC. Don [Gunboat] had a set on his '99 RSV and transferred them to the '99 trike. They do not look out of place. Far better than stock, these guys are 4"x6" and have done a luvely job of helping to get rid of my blind spot. Stock mirrors just plain suck. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Roadstar-XV-1600-Road-Star-Silverado-Chrome-BIG-MIRRORS-left-right-/370646634438?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item564c42cfc6&vxp=mtr http://i19.ebayimg.com/01/i/08/1c/7e/49_1.JPG
  5. Tonnage has nothing to do with it. It seems that almost anytime someone pulls onto another road or coming off an on ramp, they expect whoever is in that lane to move out of their way. A few times such an action would have put me UNDER an 18 wheeler. And it hasn't mattered as to whether or not I was on two wheels or four. It's gotten to the point that if I'm where there are multiple exits/on ramps, I'm in the inside lane unless I absolutely have to be in the outside one. The dingbat in the SUV should thank her lucky stars there was no oncoming traffic!!
  6. To everyone who offered help and advice, everything is much appreciated. The hard drive and the portable drive are on their way to Rick [LilBeaver] for his assistance in recovering my data, also much appreciated!! Rick Thanks again everyone!!
  7. I'm having a serious case of the screammin meamies. I am on vacation! Plans for the week included buying a 1T portable hard drive to back up my laptop onto. Hard drive was bought but said plans got put off due to other things getting in the way as in one of my mares doing her best to make my vet rich. The "fun" began when said laptop locked up while I was online. Tried activating the Task Manager to shut it down and restart the puter but the program would not come up so I just turned it off. Apparently that has corrupted my hard drive and the puter will not load into Windows. Fortunately I have 2 laptops so I was able to access Gateway's website and find out what I needed to do to get it back up and running. Gateway said to pull the hard drive, copy it so I would not lose all of my data and set the puter back to factory specs which would erase any data on the hard drive. I went down to Best Buy to have the Geek Squad check it and according to them, the data on the hard drive cannot be accessed so I've had to buy a new hard drive. Not a biggie except for one minor detail. . . . All of the stuff I have loaded on said hard drive, pics, a ton of bookmarks, a semi serious collection of eBooks [Kindle!] and an equally semi serious collection of audio books! OUCH! To top it off, the Geek Squad informed me that a MINIMUM charge of $250, which could go as high as $2500, would be needed to send the old hard drive off for data recovery. And that is not including the cost of another portable hard drive to copy the data onto. OUCH!! The HELP! is this: Is there anyone out there that can do the data recovery without it costing me the proverbial arm and a leg ? Any recomendations for someone who could?? I can redownload the ebooks and the audiobooks but considering how slow my internet connection can be, that could take forever. Also the pics, bookmarks and assorted other goodies, for the most part, cannot be replaced. HELP!!!
  8. Thanks to a house fire [and some weird Tx real estate laws], I ended up living in a 30ft TT, bunkhouse style with NO slides, for 3 YEARS. That is a mistake I won't make again, the no slides that is. And if you have pets, especially larger ones, don't make that mistake yourself. There was no floor space. The only way one of us [just the hubby and me] could get past the other was for one to sit down on the dinette or couch while the other got by. Cooking on the stove set off the smoke alarm. A tiny fridge which kept our coolers in use year round. What was really "fun" was that I spent the last 3+ months or so in the darn thing confined to bed with a busted ankle and had to use a camping port a pottie set at the foot of the bed because I couldn't get around on crutches inside the trailer. My wheelchair had to stay outside. OH FUN! One thing you will have to watch out for is towing weight. I doubt your Tahoe can handle any more than our F150 that is also set up for towing, which is around 7k lbs. This is one reason why the next full sized truck in this household will be a Ford Superduty [we have the F150 and a Frontier]. I'll also be in the market for a RV due to the Mum talking about moving onto our place as her health concerns are reaching a point where living by herself will not be an option. She'll live in the RV and will stay in our house while we use it for trips. Other things . . . . Bathrooms that can make a sardine can look roomy. Try using a so called shower/tub combo with your leg in a cast! Mattresses are usually crappy and expensive to replace unless you find one that has an actual standard sized bed. I found one of the memory foam matress pads worked wonders. Closet space - what closet space?? or even a closet?? Room for a TV of any size over 20 inches?? If that big. . Some thermostats are set up with heat and a/c under separate controls. You can have one on or the other, not both. Keeping your waste tanks cleaned out and not smelly [uGH!]. Depending on how it's insulated [ours wasn't] you can have interesting electric bills or go thru a small fortune in propane or both. The electric bills for that 30 ft trailer were the same as the 80 ft singlewide mobile home we have now. OUCH! Park in the shade whenever possible . As for finding one, hit every rv dealership you see. PPL here in Houston has a full set of pics as well as floor plans for any rv [all used] it sells on it's website. If you want to blow the salesman's mind, show up on the bike!!
  9. Been there! My husband's aunt found out last year that I ride bikes. I got repeated versions of the same half hour lecture on why bikes were dangerous, why I should sell mine [and this is just before I bought my TC], and the Hubby got repeated orders not to let me spend HIS money on MY bikes! My Mum found out what I was doing several years ago and promptly told me I was NUTS! Then I got a request to take her for a ride!! Well, I informed the Aunt that it wasn't his mad money paying for my bikes, it was mine and that he has no say in what I do with my mad money since I have no say [or not very much!] in what he does with his. I would not take the Mum for a ride on the 650 as with no backrest, she'd have to hang onto me and I didn't think that was safe. Now that I have my TC, once that I get it set up for me, we'll see. It's going to be fun shopping for her some riding gear!
  10. :sign yeah that: One for the bike and one for the truck!!
  11. Bill I get your point but the difference between the two would depend on what changes were done to the CanAm version. Considering the changes that can be done to any engine to change it's performance, I've no doubt that more changes could be done to improve it. My old Aprilia Atlantic went from a "nice lil scooter" to a "fun" machine just by pulling 2 pieces of plastic out of the air breather. I also can't see Polaris building a touring machine that can't pull itself around the block. The Aprilia version was set up for one thing and one thing only, to fly like the proverbial bat out of h***. Having seen them [the Aprilias] do anywhere from 135 to 150 mph, I can't see Polaris using the same settings. The RT's are what, not quite a year old?? Given time I've no doubt that someone will come up with performance mods for these bikes just as they have for every other bike out there, if they haven't already. And if you think getting thru all the tupperware on a RSV is fun, wait until someone has to tackle a Spyder!!
  12. The 990cc Rotax engine in the Spyders is a reworked version of the same engine Aprilia uses in it's sport bikes. And being a former Aprilia owner, I can tell you that in the Aprilia configuration, that engine is no wimp. It also has a rep as being just as bulletproof as the V4 in the RSV/RSTDs. I'd love to see what one particular friend of mine could do with the Spyder engine. Considering what I've seen him do with the Aprilia version, I just might be afraid to get on the darn thing!
  13. Cupcake I am aware that I need a H4 but I'm also trying to figure out where to put the ballast that is also part of the system. Ventures have a place to hide the darn thing [the fairing], but a TC doesn't and what kind of weather protection does it have if any? Also, MRider is right. if the set doesn't have a dual bulb, I'd lose one of my beams. Walter I'm also aware of the "fun" you can have with HID systems. I remember how bright the set was that Gunboat had on his '99 and also the "fun" he had getting them to light up in the first place! I'm just trying to find ways to light up the TC. If/when I start doing some serious touring on that thing, I want people to be able to see me coming and going. My replacing my original headlight bulb with one of the SilverStar Ultras showed just how dull and yellow my driving lights are. My current project is replacing the 2 in. reflectors that are built into the saddlebag sides with leds. The hang up there is that I'm looking for a specific set of wire connectors to use so that I can un/plug the lights when I have to remove the bags. OH FUN! Any ideas??
  14. I was able to ride both at a demo day one of the local dealers had a couple years back. it was interesting to find that while I can ride the RT, I cannot ride the RS in stock configuration. It's near sport bike sitting position had my carpal affected hands going nuts before that ride was even half over. I have to lean even farther forward on the RS Spyder than I do on either of my Yams and the weight and pressure was more than the old hands wanted to deal with. As for the RT, it IS on my short list as I'm figuring my next bike will have to be a trike in some form or another. The biggest, and just about only, problem I had with those was the sound effects given off by the bike's semi automatic tranny as it downshifted on it's own. If I had any 4wheeler making that kind of noise, it would be in the shop the next day! I'm hoping for a chance to drive one with the standard tranny in it to see how that handles. I'm also figuring that in about 5 years or so, there will some halfway reasonably priced used RT's out there as a $20k+ price tag is bit more than I want to pay unless I absolutely have to.
  15. I got a sale flyer from Cycle Gear. One of the things included is a HID headlight kit. Does anyone have one of these?? Listing includes sets for H4s, H7s, H9s, and H11s. Sale price is $55 [half off!]! Xenon 6000K bulb, 3000 lumens, w/35 watts. Mind you, it has a notation of "off road use only" with a photo demonstrating it that looks a whole lot like a GW!! Anyone??
  16. :sign yeah that: :rotf:
  17. I have a VStar! My bike at the time I wrote those posts was a Yam 650 Custom., which I still have. I bought my '96 Royal Star Tour Classic, the predecessor [sp?] to your RSTD almost exactly one year ago. I still want a RSV and have the wild and crazy thought of having both the RSTC and the RSV. Since the same Voyager trike kit will fit both bikes, I may just end up with both! I also have a gravel driveway. Whenever I pull out or come home, the feet come off the pedals and act like outriggers to help keep the bike from going over. I don't put any weight on them, just let them slide along the ground just in case I need to balance the bike. I also don't get up to any kind of speed until I'm on blacktop. BTW the first add on to the RSTC was the same as the first add on to the 650, a set of engine guards. It makes the 650 alot easier to get up off the ground. Hopefully it will do the same for the RSTC! Oh Brad, you don't have a husband. You are one!!
  18. Name of Restaurant Los Cabos Mexican Grill Street Address 2800 Hwy 36 City Brenham State or Province TX Website (Optional) loscabosbrenham.com Quality of Food Good Quality of Service Good Biker Friendly? (Parking, Trusted Location, Etc.) Yes Kind of Food? (Mexican, Chinese, etc.) combo Mexican/Steak House Alcohol Served? Yes Additional Comments This place is a combination of the Los Cabos Mexican Grill and the Nancy's Steak House chains, both owned by the same group. It's located "up on the hill" directly in front of the Brenham Lowes store just south of the US 290/St. Hwy 36 interesection and takes over part of Lowes' parking lot at peak times. The menu is HUGE. Most of the Mexican food items that come with refried beans/rice can have that exchanged for a sauteed veggies dish which is heavy on assorted kinds of squash. I prefer it myself. Food quality is good if not better. The hubby has fallen madly in love with the 12oz rib eye [one of the best I've had] which is most definitely cooked to order [he likes it RARE!] Quantity is definitely on the high end as well. Service is good with the bus crew [more like a small army] taking care of drink refills, etc. on a regular basis. Respectable salad bar with assorted soups and the baked potatoes are NOT the small ones. One side of the restaurant can be divided into private dinning areas. For those of you who may remember the Purcell's Buffet that formerly had the location, the remodel has greatly increased the seating capacity, one reason why part of the Lowes lot ends up being their parking lot. The only problems we've ever had there were shortly after they opened. Some of our orders got mistaken for another item on the menu. With a menu the size of this one, I can understand the problem. Just make sure your server has the right item you want. They also have the usual vanilla/chocolate soft serve cone machine for us "kids". This is a great place for dinner or for a meal stop on a day ride. With the dividers on the west side of the building, they can create seating for small or large groups. I haven't tried lunch yet but that will happen one of these days. Hopefully, we'll be having our usual Friday nite dinner out there tomorrow!!
  19. Looks interesting. Let us know how everything works out. I'm looking at getting the same shield w/grey tint for my RSTC.
  20. Annie If that's the bird I think it is. . . . Maybe he thinks that since it's the white man's house cats that are one of the reasons why he's becoming extinct, then the white man should also help him repopulate the species!!
  21. Jim I can't help you with your search. I have a '96 RSTC also, but mine is the stock bike. My question is does your trike have the same pipes my bike does? The '96 RSTC has quad pipes, 2 on each side [see my avatar below]. Later models, starting in '98 if I'm not mistaken, have 4into2 pipes, making the '96's combo VERY hard to find. If your pipes don't match mine, you may have a custom set which could mean having to do the same, having a set modified to fit. Good luck with that one! As for the power, I have no idea what triking a RSTC [especially if it's a full trike kit] could do to the power band on the bike. The change in the exhaust system could adversely[sp?] affect the bike's performance especially if it was not rejetted and synched to match. I have personal experience with that on my '03 650 Custom when we modded the air breather but at the time couldn't rejet the carbs. My vocabulary on the trip home [it was done at a MD] was slightly unprintable as I had to ride it back. Just getting it anywhere near highway speed was almost impossible. The powerband on my '96 TC is anything but wimpy. Low level flying is this bike's middle name and so far as I know, my bike is in a fully stock configuration. I love it. I rode it 1400+ miles to get it home when I bought it, almost entirely interstate travel and it had no problem keeping up with or passing anything on the highway. I've had it right at a year and I'm still getting used to the way it will take off when I twist the throttle, especially after riding my Custom for the previous 4 years. Good luck in your search!
  22. I'm in the process of putting risers with a full set of Buckeye's SS cables +2's for my RSTC. If this does not take care of the problem I have with too far forward bars, I will probably have to go the Flanders route. My question is does the same set of Flanders bars fit the RSTC?? Dumb question I know, [not everything on the TC matches the TD] but if they're going to be this hard to find, I'm debating going ahead and buying a set just in case. I've no doubt finding someone to buy them from me IF I don't need them should not be a problem. I just have to figure out if I need to go ahead and do it.
  23. Welcome to the madhouse. I have a '96 RSTC myself. They are great bikes, even if they are almost old enough to vote!! I'm still working on all that I want to do with mine. This place is great for finding out anything you want to know about the Royal Stars. HAVE FUN!!
  24. :95: Missed out on another one, darn it!! Why is it I always find these things when it's too late to join the party?? To top it off, I was having breakfast at the local Kbob's and had to watch all the lucky so and so's heading to ROT this morning. RATS!!! Hope everybody had a good time and I'd luv to hear a review of the munchies!!
