simple oil question
KarlS replied to KarlS's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm sticking to good ole oil. Thanks for every ones input. -
When I bought my 83VR in December I had no idea what oil was being used in it. I changed it using 20w50 Valvoline regular motorcycle oil. I would like to chance to synthetic oil. In the past when I tried to use synthetic oil in cars that had some miles on them they leaked oil quite badly. My 83 has 48000 miles in it. Do you think it would be safe to go to synthetic?

I guy about 2 miles from my house has a 1976 GL1000 Goldwing he will sell for $150.00. I looked at the bike and it has Vetter faring and hard bags. Faring and bags are white and rest of bike red. Has the chrome guard rails around the hard bags. Like a lot of people up here he lost his job and moved to a house with no garage. He has a 71 Harley and a 79 CX500 and no money or room to do anything with the wing. Bike has been setting outside under a plastic tarp. Engine is free (not frozen up) I has no idea that 76 also had a kick start on them. Lots of surface rust on chrome and winshied broken. Left front fork tube would need to be replaced. Would also make a great parts bike. If I had a garage I would buy it. But all he wants is $150.00 and someone to come and get it. If interested PM me and I will give you my phone number and answer your questions.

Beware using your debit card at the gas pump
KarlS replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Watering Hole
Another 2 cents worth. I've been going to the same gas station for years and when my accounts were at a bank I would get the $50.00 hold. The last 3 years I've been with a credit union and have never had a hold from that gas station or any other around the country. Maybe my credit union won't do the hold thing? Don't know why just glad there's no hold anymore. -
Those stents drove me crazy for two weeks. Went to doctor and told him if he didn't take them out I would. He laughed and said he'd take them out and put bigger ones in. After he stopped me from running out we had a good laugh and took them out. I never would of believed they were so long. BUT, now I breath better and no snoring. Of course the snoring never bothered me anyway. LOL.

Just got back from circle tour and there were NO gas stations open from Sault Ste. Marie to Wawa. 140 miles. So be sure to fill up at Sault Ste Marie. All the rest of the trip there was plenty of places to stop. And a must do road is M-26 from Eagle River to Copper Harbor. If you go you will Love it.

After you take M-119 (N. Lake Shore Dr.) to Cross Village take C-66 East to M-81 North. At the Lake go WEST on Wilderness Park Dr. into the Middle of Wilderness Park. When you come back out keep going East into Mackinaw City. It's 16 miles into the Park and back out but what a nice ride. Also the ride from the Park to Mackinaw City is nice too.

Forgot to mention: to you Canadians. On Hwy 17 every time we pulled over to take pictures or any other reason all the cars and trucks that came by would stop and ask if we needed help. We were later told that if we were along side the road and nothing wrong just give the thumbs up sign and the drivers would just drive by. Also explained why when we passed someone pulled over they would give the thumbs up to us. What a good bunch of people.

Left 8:00am Monday the 15th and got home at 9:30am Friday the 19th. Would of been back late Thursday but so many Deer was out when sun was going down did not want to chance the last 3 hours dodging Deer. 1950 miles.

Back from the circle tour around Lake Superior, What a great ride. Sunny and warm days the whole trip, except for Superior Wisconsin which we were told NEVER gets warm. And to those crazy Canadians, is 90km/hr just a mild suggestion as to what speed to drive? At 90 EVERYONE from Grandma on her way to bingo to the double loaded semi driver will run you over. So we made good time through Canada. If you are ever near the Keweenaw Peninsula you must drive M-26 from Eagle River to Copper Harbor, there's no better road in Michigan bar none. Now some of you may of heard of this, we went in a little restaurant and they had a Ruben sandwich, BUT instead of using corned beef, they used fresh caught Lake Superior White Fish. Sounded strange was VERY good. 83 VR ran great. Mileage from 36mpg (keeping in front of Canadians) to 48mpg just tooling around. If you have never done the circle tour it's worth doing. Saw quite a few 1st gens but only 2 2nd gens. Need the 1st gen speed to keep from being run over. lol.

Leaving at 8:00am this morning for a ride around Lake Superior. 1900 miles. Have put 2500 miles on so far this year since I got it running. Think I covered everything. Flint to Marathon Ontario. Marathon to Bayfield Wi. Bayfield to Marquette Mi. Marquette to Flint. Staying as close to shore line as roads will let us.

I was talking to a dealer about a month ago and he said that his Yamaha dealer rep. told him there might not be an 2010 Venture. He said that Yamaha is changing the Venture and won't have it ready for 2010 and will introduce it in 2011. But you know dealers, they are apt to say anything.
-
Yes the first one got it because it was changed to no hat needed. I got a chance for the new one on Monday also. Leaving Monday to ride around Lake Superior and know of where to get the picture when going through Mackinaw City. The race is on???

Gary, with our great Flint Police department they will call you in a week or so and ask "what do want us to do?" like they did me. But I found a cop less then a mile away from the party store where I was just hit in the face with a shotgun and robbed. "what do you want us to do?" And we wonder why our Super Chief and Chief of Police are under federal indictment. Good Luck.

$7200 is way below the going price for a '99 V Interstate. Especially 'out the door'. The minimum is $8000++. I saw the bike first on the Monday I ordered the windshield but didn't talk to anyone. I went home and looked it up on NADA and for this zip code it said it was worth high retail w/o CB $6999.00. So when I talked to the guy on Friday he said it was $7999.00. I told him what NADA said and he looked it up at his deck. Thats when he said he would go $7200.00 out the door and wrote it on the back of the card he gave me. I didn't have the cash or financing set up. This is a dealer that advertises we finance anyone and all that stuff. They just want me to go through their financing is the bottom line. If it's still there when I get back from my trip I'll talk to them. I do not NEED another bike it's just that one is VERY VERY nice.

I am now registered.

There's a not so good nick name we have for this dealer up here because of their bad reputation after the sale. Seems the "out the door price" depends on if I finance through them or on my own with my credit union. The sales rep says a out the door price can't be given without a credit app filled out first even tho he wrote it on the back of his card he gave me. I figured I could bye it and never darken their doors again. The price is now $7999.00 plus. Looks like me and the 83VR are leaving on June 15th around Lake Superior as planed. I might go try one more time because it is a nice bike.
-
Went and picked up my windshield for the 83VR and the dealer has a very nice Black 99 Honda Valkyrie Interstate for sale. 38000 miles. Talked with the sales rep. and thought we had a out the door price agreement of $7200.00. Called him today to tell him I'm going to credit union in the morning and he said he can't remember agreeing to that price. So going back out there tomorrow and if the price is right will make a move on it. So that will mean the 83VR will be for sale. Just have to see what happens.

Me Too. Bike only.

I'm not planning anything anymore, something always happens. Planed on meeting other Michigan riders this morning to go to Feebirds MD. So yesterday I'm at the car wash getting the bike all ready to go. I go to get on the scoot and feel a pain in my right knee. 3 hours later the knee won't bend, support any weight and is twice the normal size. Go home take some pills, ice it down and go to bed. Get up at 5:00am to get ready to go, knee feels somewhat OK, swelling down, think ALRIGHT time to hit the road. 20 minutes into getting ready and it's all swelled up again and not working. Tried again at 8:30am and same thing. Beautiful day for riding and can't even walk. So if everything goes as it ussally does by Monday knee will be fine like nothing happened and just wanted to ruin the weekend. So no more planning, just last minute moves, seems to work better. Ok I'm done whining. Hope everyone having a good time at MD.

I didn't think this one would be that hard. Just down the road from me is a Donut/Subway shop that 6-8 officers are there at noon everyday. I don't think I'd get arrested for asking for a picture? I think it would be wrong if I posted on the mission I started.

I plan on showing up at Leon's also, and I will be coming back Saturday late afternoon.

'84 rear brake hi spot bleeder ?
KarlS replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 2 cents worth. When I got my 83VR had to completely re-do all brakes. Kept trying to bleed left front first (farthest from master rule) and got nowhere. Ever since then I bleed rear first and then front bleeds real fast. Maybe that's whats supposed to be done anyway just know it works on mine.
