1. My guess would be the fingers in that hub as well. I had the "creak" show up one time at slow speed when coasting to a stop. Wasn't a sound that made you feel good. Headed for home, did some checking in on VR.org, and went to work to clean it up. Problem solved. If you hear this at slow speed, even rolling it around the garage or driveway, that's probably it. As Ruffy said, there is a circlip (snap ring) that needs to be removed, then the pins will come out of the hub dampeners. Good luck!
2. We spent a week in that area in late July this year. What a great area to ride. We did do C9Y in Iowa, and that was a fine ride, but it had nothing on the roads that we hit in WI. If you do go on C9Y, make an ice cream stop at "Greasers" in Guttenberg, IA. Cherry Amaretto Fudge, or something like that, was THE best ice cream flavor. We rode mostly in WI, in an area from LaCrosse on the NW corner, La Valle on the NE, Sextonville on the SE, and Prairie du Chien on the SW corner. We also ran the Great River Road down to Dubuque, crossed the river, and came back up on the other side. We put on 1800 miles that week, which isn't SO many miles, but we spent a lot of time in the saddle on roads that aren't exactly built for speed. Stayed in a great house near DeSoto, WI that we found on VRBO.com. I know you asked about an older hotel, but if you are traveling with friends, you can get up to 5 couples in the house we rented with lots of room for living space. Very reasonable for even 3 couples to share. Only downfall of the place for bikers is that there is about 1 mile of gravel road to get there. We live on gravel so ride a couple miles in and out every time we ride, so no big deal. It was reasonably well maintained, and well worth the bother to get to that house. As far as recommended roads, I don't know where to start, because you can't go wrong. In general, for big sweepers and more open views, stick with the numbered roads (33, 82, 171, for example). For tighter curves, less traffic, and even better scenery, head for the county roads with single letter designations (M, A, X, P, for instance). For even quieter, curvier, narrower routes thru the deepest of hollers, head for the 2-letter county roads (PI, UU, for instance). Off and on, you'll be in Amish country, so watch for the buggies. Lots of old rural churches, crops grown on the contour (which I think are always a pretty scene) and woods scattered throughout the area make for great scenery. Most of the roads are either in the valley following the stream, or on the ridge between 2 of these valleys, with great views of the valleys. Here and there you get the transition from top to bottom. I see you're in Mankato, so we're not so far away from you. Feel free to pm or call me. Number should be in my profile. If we could get away in October, we'd be all over the WI leaf-lookers gathering. That should be a great time to ride in that area. If you can swing it at that time, I'd be thinking real hard on that one. Have a wonderful time, whenever, and wherever you go.:dancefool:
3. Some excellent ideas already. Thanks to all of you!! Did I say that I can't wait?? Larry
4. In a few days we, and 4 other couples, will be heading to SW WI for a week of crucid, up-and-down roads. One RSV, 3 wings, and a Buell of some kind. Can't wait to get going. We will be staying near Victory, WI, and riding both sides of the Mississippi in the area. Just wondering if any of you have any "don't miss" roads, parks, eat spots, or anything else that you would like to recommend for us. We have some tentative routes planned out, but they are subject to change or being completely thrown out for other ideas. Thanks in advance. Larry
5. I don't have the same model Garmin as you do (mine is a nuvi 500), but my self-loaded stuff shows up in "extras". That's where the Yamaha dealers list came into, anyway..... Larry
6. I've worn glasses for 40+ years, progressive lenses for the last 10+ years. I like them just fine. They do take some getting used to. You have to learn to point your head at what you want to see sharply. Gets the right part of the lens in the right place. It becomes a natural thing, and you won't even think about it after a while. Only annoying on occasion when it's awkward to get the head in the right place so you can see something close above you for instance. As far as field of vision, I think they have no affect on your peripheral vision. With or without glasses, you only see clearly what you are looking directly at. Your peripheral vision catches movement or light changes, and gets your attention, but you don't SEE what it is until you turn your eyes, or head, and focus on it. Give them a chance. You get used to them....
7. Here's a pic of my results this year. Nice doe with a flintlock rifle I built from a blank. I'll throw this in from last spring. My wife (Denise) and I doubled on a pair of IA turkeys, this time with muzzleloading shotguns that I built myself. That was probably my favorite hunting memory ever, getting 2 big turkeys within about 15 seconds, sitting side-by-side with my honey.
8. Good for you, Bubber!!! Here's hoping the new position is a good fit for you and works out for the long run as well as the short one. Said a prayer for you here, too, and was wondering how it came out.
9. The whole North Shore drive is really nice. Someday maybe we can do the Lake Superior circle. I think that would be a great ride. Going NE from Duluth, it just gets better the farther you go, because most folks don't get past Two Harbors, or Splitrock Lighthouse. Just keep going and the road gets quieter and quieter. Beyond Grand Marais, you could near to get lonely up there. My kind of road. When we get on a stretch like that, we always say "Nice of them to make this road, just for us, wasn't it??" If you're up that way, take a detour off the North Shore on Highway 1 to Ely, MN. Really nice ride. I don't know that you can make a loop of it very easy, because there aren't a lot of tar roads up in the arrowhead area, but it's worth riding up and back on the same route, if need be. Just my 2 cents, Larry
10. I also had trouble keeping the lightbar tight after I put the highway lamps on it. Had ball-end allen wrenches, get it tight, and could depend on it being loose in few hundred miles or so. I did as Freebird said, got new hex head bolts, blue locktite, and put them in. Never came loose since. Can't recall if I used a socket or what to get them tight, but it worked.
11. I remembered that Jim has a website showing some of his projects, and sure enough, there's a pictur of the "BlackPearl". I don't know if this will work, but here's the link to it: http://www.jimsboatworks.com/images/BlackPearlL.jpg Take a look.
12. Looks good to me!! I'm pretty sure I can see 2 sailboats, and the power boat as well. :thumbsup2:We'll take your word for it. Go ahead and set the next target. What's really funny is your name being The Black Pearl. I have a buddy that builds and restores wood and canvas boats and canoes in my shop, and he named one of his handmade wooden rowboats "Black Pearl". I looked on this computer to see if I had a picture of it, but no luck. When we get home, I'll see if I can come up with a picture of it, and post it to this thread. I think you'd get a chuckle out of it too. Next taget is............
13. Ok, we got past Labor Day weekend without someone getting the sailboat pic, so let's make it a bit easier. Any boat, any size, any kind of power, just have it on the water and in motion in the background behind you and your bike. Good luck....
14. It sounds like you had a great time without us????? We made a wrong turn at the end of the driveway, and before we noticed it, we were south of Des Moines, IA. Tried to get back, but messed up again, and ended up in Buena Vista, CO by Monday noon. Oh well, as long as we're here we might as well visit our number 2 daughter, and spend a few days riding in the area. What a place to ride a bike!!! A little intimidating for a southern MN boy, though. We'll try to work our way into the higher passes as the week goes by. See how our nerve developes. Anyway, knew you'd have a good time, and the weather was great for it. See you on the road.
15. Last year we stayed in a small mom & pop style motel in Lake George, NW of Grandpagak's about 10?? miles. Nothing special, but a place to call home for a couple nights. Reasonable and close to the festivities. Maybe Grandpagak can help out with the name of it. It's on the north side of the main road thru town. Larry
16. We won't make it this year, as you may have already guessed. We're riding to CO. Leaving Friday morning, and heading for Buena Vista, CO, where our middle daughter is located. Plan to go south to some doings in IA for Friday night, then mid-day Sat. start heading west. Hope to stay mostly off the interstate, and make our way across southern NE and northern KS on the way. Hope to be out there sometime on Monday, and have some time to ride and explore the area. Not sure of our route home as yet. Have a good time up there, and everybody ride safe. Larry
17. eusa: You gotta read the post..... but here it is again, for those that missed it. If this satisfies the target, then the next one will be: you, your bike, and a sailboat in the background, sails up and underway. No marina shots, or at the dock. I don't care how big or little the sailboat is, or how far away it is, just so we can see the sail out there behind you. OK?? Go get her....... Good luck!!!!
18. Here you go. This time it's my co-pilot in the picture....lots better looking than me, anyway. Got the shot on the way home from our niece's wedding in SD this weekend. Nice enough weather all weekend. About 280 miles out on Friday, I went out for a solo run on Saturday afternoon before the wedding, about 130 miles, and then we wandered home on Sunday for about 350 more. On the way, Denise caught this sign, and remembered the target, so we pulled in and got the shot. Westbrook, MN, about 45 miles from home. If this satisfies the target, then the next one will be: you, your bike, and a sailboat in the background, sails up and underway. No marina shots, or at the dock. I don't care how big or little the sailboat is, or how far away it is, just so we can see the sail out there behind you. OK?? Go get her.......
19. Not quite the "drive-in" that I had in mind, but since it's been a week, and nobody else came up with one, lets call it close enough. Good pics, and you did it on a 1000 mile day. So what's next, dreamreaver???
20. Scooter, that's just the kind of place I'm talking about. If nobody else comes up with it, and you feel guilty about it being too close, go for a good ride, and treat yourself when you're almost home. I don't think there are any real rules about having to go a distance to get the shot. Some are just going to be handier for some people than others. That's life....Mom said it wouldn't always be fair. Larry
21. I know there aren't many, if any, places where they come to you any more. Around here there are places that are the drive-ins of old, but now you probably have to get out, go to the window and make your order, and then eat at an outside table or in your vehicle. The car-hops are going to be really hard to find, I would think, but all I'm after is the kind of place with little or no inside seating. You drive-in, get your order, and eat outside, in your car, or take it to go home or off to a park for your picnic. Maybe they're not that common anymore, but i could get to a couple in short order from here. Let's give it a couple days. If nobody seems to have an idea of how they can get to one of these, I'll set a new target. I went for a 285 mile ride to get the Shady Rest the other day. (I didn't go in a real straight line.) Get on and ride.....and treat yourself to something at the drive-in for your efforts.....it's a mini-stimulus package. Good luck!!
22. Yep, it was a great day for a ride. Bikes were everywhere, even saw 2 Ventures, one fueling up in Hutchinson, MN and another on the road north of Willmar, I think it was. Wish my co-pilot would have been on the back, but she is at a wedding in NC for a few more days. OK, next target. How about your bike in front of a "Mom & Pop" type drive-in restaurant, with you feeding your face on your favorite menu item. No chain type places allowed. You know, MacDonalds, Hardees, etc. Should be in riding range of most folks, and an excuse for a ride, and a treat. Ready, set, go.....:ICwink:
23. OK, so I dared you to beat me, and you did....and I think your place is in the spirit of the original target, but here are my pictures of the Shady Rest Resort from Villard, MN. The proprietor was resting in the shade on the deck with a book, and I gave her my strange request for a picture or two of her place. She was nice enough to shoot 'em for me. So, Scooter Bob, who needs to set the next target. Makes no difference to me, just make the call so the game can go on.
24. I'm heading out the door for the Shady Rest ala Villard, MN in short order. Hopefully have the required pics by tonight. I dare somebody to beat me.... Later
25. I could be wrong, but I think the "New Posts" tab brings up any thread that has a new post in it since the last time you pushed "New Post". So if you pushed it at home, only read some of them, went to work and pushed it again, you got the new posts since you last pushed the button. It doesn't keep track of what you may have looked at (or not).....I think....maybe....
