  1. as a preventive maint. project what type of bolt should I replace the problem bolt with? Hopefully not the same kind thats in there now!!! Ya know --- bolt size and type! Thanks and just when I was feelin good about the old girl, I think I'll go to the garage and put her up on 2 legs till I get that better bolt in her. Sure would be a sick sight to see that big thing layin on her side like 2 tone Burgandy Elephant.
  2. Needed 1 used first gen carb slide. If any one has 1 old but usable carb slider for an 83 first gen Smaller bore than the 2nd gen. , can you PM me. skydoc_17 put me on to a problem i was having and sure enough he was dead on (as usual ). I had one slide come loose and was not opening all the way. superglue repair and carb sync and its a new beast. all the rest of mine are OK but the chipped up one , and I hate to run it (even though it runs great now) with it knowing its condition. let me know. thanks. PM me I think I may be able to help.
  3. The Pirate House is a good place to eat,. Story is the place was used to abduct drunken patrons and take them via tunnels straight to ships to make them work on ships that sailed around the world! :scared:we also took one of the tours around town that originated at that resturant. It was a ghost tour at night,---awesome. Like was said from someone else there is a ton to do and see a! round there. Enjoy
  4. :think:There should be enough room with the bike on the center stand to get under there with a cutoff wheel to open it up and remove the baffle and weld her up, don't ya think?
  5. glad you got it done, it really isn't that hard but if it was worth it to you then all is good! God Bless you also
  6. :doh:I'm not really familiar with his bike yet so what is a PMS screw and slides and where are they? He also has one pipe beginning to discolor, is this a result of the different exhaust or do the carbs need sync? Thanks Ron
  7. I have a 89 VR and at 5ft 8in I have the dreaded short legs disease. Would the boards with the heal toe shifter give me more room than my pegs do when I try----- to put both feet down at the same time? I think I could get used to not having my pant leg get caught on the peg when I'm walking her backwards out of the garage!
  8. Maybe a large easy out if they make them that big? Good luck ,you should be able to come up with something and it won't be like your trying to save the bad one so you can try about anything.
  9. I got it all apart and all maint done and all back together with 0 extra screws bolts or anything left over!! Gonna put some new plugs and wires on for good measure. Can I make my own wires from the stock parts stuff at the auto parts store or should I just get a pre made set? Thanks everyone for all the advice, now that I know how to do it the right way it won't be bad the next time!
  10. Thanks, gonna give it a try today after work.
  11. man, you sure have the bug and the enthusiasm to get the job done! welcome to the group! We do like to eat around here also!!!!
  12. No other surprises right? Is it difficult to put back in?
  13. I have the 89 VR apart for entire maint on the rear end. When I unbolt the 4 crown nuts on the rear gear case what am I to expect when I pull the driveshaft out of the swing arm? Like, will just the shaft come out or will the seal washer and circlip from the front come out as well ? A LOT OF HELP PLEASE !!!!
  14. Looks like your engine guard has been pushed back ino the plastic elbow and has it cracked and pretty beat up! Definately look into fixing that correctly! I think Earl aka skydoc has a repair kit available, O rings and the such but you may need to replace that plastic elbow. Good luck
  15. My Dad is a Minister, and after someone asks for prayers then later returns to testify about the good results of prayer he justs smiles and asks them ---- What else do you need God to do for you! I just love that.
  16. My friend has a 1100 vstar and is looking into blocking off the AIS. It has Cobra exhaust on it but nothing else has been done to it. He says it cracks and pops which I would guess may be common when changing to aftermarket exhaust with less back pressure. Is anyone familiar on the procedure to block the AIS off ? Thanks
  17. Just do it, take it apart the way the guys say on here and its easy! There are a couple of special tools you will need and there are pics on here somewhere on how they look and how to make one for yourself. You will love the way it rides afterwards. I am doing things to mine that I never thought I would try either but how rewarding after to know you did it yourself.
  18. Thanks guys, and while I'm under there I want to change the fuel filter. Does anyone have a number on one that will fit from the auto parts store? Mine is an 89 VR. Can it be difficult to get the shock suspension out to put the grease jerks in? I may as well go for the grandslam while it is raining around here!
  19. I have the rear tire off of the 89 for a tire change. the question is, what needs to be taken off the rim ?do i need to take the rotor off of the rim before it goes to the tire changer? This is the first time I have taken one apart for the tire replacement. And is there anything that gets done other than cleaning the hub and regreasing the teeth? Is there anything else in there i need to take apart and service?
  20. Thanks all, I do have all the chrome bars and goodies around the back and around the saddle bags. I was going by what was posted in the tech pages on how to change the rear tire.
  21. I am doing the rear tire replacement with the bike kneeling, no front tire. And I had a :buttkick:dumb ( you fill in what ever words that fit ) attack, I forgot to put a strap on the centerstand and engine guard. We were slowly lowering the front and then she rolled forward off of the center stand .She didn't fall over but hit pretty solid and squarely on the exhaust. It took 3 of us to get her back up on the stand. This time I strapped her up and lowered again and all is good. But with the nose tilted down that far I now have a couple of drops of oil on the floor about the size of a quarter after being tilted for an hour. Is this anything to worry about or could it be comming out of somewhere it wouldn't when level? I do like trying this stuff on my own but the unknowns drive me crazy. any responces are deserved and welcomed.
  22. I just replaced my battery and did the resistor bypass, worked fine!
  23. I'm replacing my stock CB/Radio antenna on the VR with a Firestik . I looked at the new antenna and of course it has a male end. So I want to replace with all new from the antenna to the CB. I see that I will need different parts to hook this up. One end of the old coax has the plug in type of connector (like on a car radio antenna wire)at the CB and the other end has the old mounting unit built right on it. Where can I get coax with the plug on one end and the screw on connector at the other end by the new mounting stud? OR ----- can I cut the old original mounting end off and put on a new screw on connector for the mounting stud end for the new antenna?
  24. It freaked me out the first time it happened to me! It was very nice to hear from people on here that know about these motors it was normal.
