    It's not the filler plug thing. I found it after I messed this piece up. Then I changed the lube. I think this was the original fluid (33,000) because it was black as tar and the magnet was covered with so much goo I could not figure out what I had until I wiped it off!! I will change it again with the next 2 oil changes to clean things out. Anyway, I think it must be some kind of dust cover but it does not go back on tight now because I twisted it. Underneath it is a cone shaped item that looks like it has a vent hole in it. Can I just cover this with a rubber boot of some type or electrical tape? What does anybody suggest?

    Went to change the lube in the rear end and started with the wrong part. I twisted off the cap on top of the rear end thinking it was the filler. It wasn't. What is it? How much damage have I done?

    I was going to replace the seals and the springs myself after viewing the explanation on how to do it. But Wifey Said "NO! Take it to the shop and have it done right." I did not bother to tell her how much more this would cost but why spoil the surprise? We went to Florida and the bike went to the doctor. His only concern was the pitting of the tubes. He had to see the bike before he could decide if seal would even work. No pitting so we were good. All seals, guides, bushings and progressive springs. Also new steering head bearings. Also checked the carb synch. 6 hrs labor and parts while I was goofing off cost me $654.00. It's a new bike! Glad to have had this done by a pro. The bike is worth it and so am I. Prior to this I put stop leak on the seals a couple of times; in the tubes and on the floor and the brakes and wherever else I could slop it. I just ended up with a mess. Of course I did get a new tool for removing the handlebars and for opening the tubes. Who doesn't like a new tool now and then? Lets face it......this is expected maintenance and should be done instead of avoided. I now have an '83 with 32k miles with $3,100 invested. It's worth every penny.

    My seals are leaking now and I'm bottoming out easily. Today I will add oil to the front tubes but I was wondering....can a person put some Power Steering Stop Leak in the tubes to help the seals? (I did try the trick of lifting the dust cover and running a bead on top of the seal. This helped a little. Did not last long though.) What if any effect would this thickener/stop leak have on the performance/operation of the tubes?

    I can't get at them with a crescent so I guess I need a big socket. Can you tell me what size they are so I can go buy one please?

    I want to adjust my handlebars and also put some oil in my fork tubes. However, I can not seem to figure out how to remove the black plastic cover. Does it just pop off? I do not want to break it. Oh, mine is an 83

    Well, I just get on it and rock forward a couple of times and it comes off. At least that way I have a leg on each side for a fighting chance if something was to happen. Then side stand goes down. As far as mounting, since your inseam almost touches the ground, you may wish to stand on the foot rest and swing your leg over. Kind of like putting your foot in a stirrup to ride a horse. I had a problem mounting a Gold Wing once and that is what the seller told me to do. It worked for him and it worked for me.

    Check the fork seals. If they leak then check the rotors. They will have gotten slick and then ruined the pads. Put it up on the center stand and see if the rear wheel is locked. If it is, it is probably the rear brake. Needs bleeding at a minimum. The luggage may look good but open the trunk box and pull out the pad in the bottom. There will probably be some repairs needed due to cracking or even holes. Normal for these but still something to address. Mufflers? Are they rotted through? Are they even the originals? Start it and see what kind of warning lights come on. The clutch is hydraulic. Should pull easy. Take side panels off and see how many tabs are broken. Fixable but something else that may need to be addressed. These are all little things. It comes with age. Like arthritis and wrinkles. However, 2nd gear could already be gone or going. Also, check for frame cracking around the center stand. Has it ever been dropped? Beware of busted plastic on fairing. Mine has never been dropped (no on anything hard enough to bend or scratch things) but it still needs attention due to the age. Take it for a spin. Go over some bumps and see if it bottoms out on the front. The only other thing you may want to look for is a 2010 model. (Just kidding) They are great in my opinion.

    Now I'm thinking some lead. You can shape it exactly. I don't think it will get hot enough to actually melt and run out or weld things together. :Venture:Of course, if the weather breaks it won't happen at all!

    I saw a comment somewhere about making your own exhaust seals on the first gen out of copper wire. Can somebody expound upon this please? It sounds ingenious.

    Other than some cosmetic neglect and absent mindedness it seems fair. However, you will have nearly $3k into it with no fairing or windshield. Or bells and whistles. I think max is $2k. After you hear it run!

    Praise God! You did well!! That will be a blessing tonight at our church. Sorry I won't be able to be at the M&E later but it sounds like you have plenty of care givers around to fill in for me.
