OK, so winter has its icy grip on me. Time to install the Shindengen voltage regulator I bought from Dano in the group buy and adjust the valves on the 86. The Shindengen regulator was first on the list. When it was first talked about on this site it was said that this replacement voltage regulator is far superior to the old one but not the same dimensions. This poses a problem for the mounting. The Shindengen is too wide to mount in the stock position. I found that it would hit the muffler and not let the muffler be mounted. Mounting it here seemed detrimental to me because of the heat factor also. So an alternate site has to be found. You have to give credit to the Japanese for this bikes compactness of its various components. The Shindengen regulator was mounted in the left air-duct on Saltydog 83 std. This to me sounded like a excellent place for mounting with one exception. I was worried about any high frequency interference in my radio being that it would be mounted under it. I for one like my FM radio. Like a local station says in its promos "There's no weather warnings on a I-pod". So my choice was the right side air-duct. The installation was tight but do-able. I started it after buttoning it up, no radio noise and it works just like it was explained. Ramping up slowly, perfect. So far so good. The valves have never been done on my 86 to my knowledge it has roughly 38,000 mi. So I start to line up the necessary gaskets, shims and tool. The gaskets and shims are no problem. The tool thats a problem in itself. Seems nobody stocks this tool. Unless your willing to spend bu-ku bucks for it. I'm cheap. I know it. So that being said, I started to make my own. It started out life as a 13/16-7/8 box end wrench that was modified earlier for some past job. The box width was pretty close to what was needed. Randy R contributed pictures of what the tool actually does. Which helped to get a mental pic of the valve tools dimensions. Plus Dingy posted a PDF file of a original tools dimensions. The total thickness of the 13/16 wrench wasn't enough to depress the shim buckets. So after welding the outside some to build it up and grinding it flat the appropriate thickness was achieved. The size 13/16 didn't fit the cam hex at first so some filing was done until it did. It worked like a charm! Total time involved in making the tool was roughly 2-3 hours. It isn't pretty but it works. Valves done. Thanks to everyone for the great writeups on the Shindengen voltage regulator and valve settings. Also the PDF charts and pictures about both. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=39671&d=1262284449

Don't believe that banks don't want your car back. If you co-sign a loan, you are not notified that the car loan is in arrears until it is being re-pod. Legal thievery. By then the costs have sky-rocketed beyond control especially if the car is on the other side of the country. Living proof. This banking institution occasionally gets robbed from time to time in the news. The wife and I give High-Fives to each other for the poetic justice. Banks are crooks with laws behind them. Never co-sign a car loan again. Once bitten, twice shy.

AWW, come on now! You'll never get me to believe that one!:rotfl:

They peed on me! :rotfl: Thats funny! On another note the story about South Dakota given back to the Souix. Is interesting to say the least. Like my pappy said "What goes around comes around". Bad news for any of you living there without Indian blood. Sturgis could become a lot different!

What brand of clear paint have you used to seal the shine after polishing the engine pieces. I have the heads ready to seal but figured I'd ask here to see what kind of luck the rest of you have had after painting them to keep their shine. I have done the side cases a while ago but never painted them. I have kept them shiny being that their easy to access. But the heads are harder to access so its paint time if any of you have had good luck doing it and it lasts.

It is not the price that is the problem. It is the lack of availability that erks me the most. The price seems to be all over. Depending where you look. But finding one to be bought right now is darn near impossible. It has been said before that someone was going to try to make one but was told that there would be to much time involved to do it. Well given the time you place an order then wait for delivery. How much time is that? Days- weeks sometimes. This is why I believe that this would be something to look into. Is far as as sideline. Time to put the thinking cap on. PASS ME THE FIRE WRENCH!:rotfl:

Its hard to believe that someone out there doesn't make a valve tool for our bikes at a reasonable cost. If there is someone or someplace I would like to know. The just atv site has been said to look questionable and I agree. Has anyone bought from them? With no phone number listed to call them to check if they have any in stock. I am reluctant to place a order. If I was a machinist I think there could be some money to be made by making them and if nothing else selling them on this site.

Don't know if its worth it but it is pretty.

The end of 2009 is a good thing. Good riddance. This has been a miserable year altogether. Bad weather, could not take trip west because of family problems, worst crop ever, father in law passing the list could go on and on. Here's hoping 2010 will be better. Looking back on the last ten though for things good. My son coming home from the sand box and becoming a Drill instructor at Ft. Leonardwood. I would have to also say the births of my 4 grandchildren. No matter how bad life can get they never cease to put a smile on my face.

Buy a snowmobile, build something out of snow, ski, ride a sled{remember the thrill when you were a kid},ice skate, or vedge out in the house or garage and fix something. We have a dirt road here in town that is perfect for sled riding. Every winter we round our friends and all the kids, fix up some hot chocolate and spend the day sledding down. We build a small fire at the top for everyone to warm up and we have a ball. Your having a string of bad luck sure hope it changes. Winter sucks but at least there is snow now.
