  1. A bit of an update on my suspension issues. Had recently installed one of the group buy Fork Braces. And then realized some of my issues developed around the time i installed it. Pulled front fork springs again but left forks intact on the bike.....removed front tire, fender and brace etc. so i could check forks individually for compression extension and binding etc. Both seemed to work fine when working them individually. Then installed group buy Fork Brace and found forks would bind when compressing....tried the same with OE brace installed and forks worked ok. Repeated this with brace and front wheel installed with same results. The group buy Fork Brace hole tolerances were excellent but the radius cut in the ends to fit around the fork tubes was 'tight'....and i believe 'speading' the forks apart. After 'massaging' these radius' and refitting the Brace the binding problem was gone....and after reassembling everything and riding I immediately noticed improved riding characteristics........and much happier with a more comfortable ride. I still am noticing a harsher ride on sharp bumps...maybe Sonic Springs would improve this??? Thanks for everyones input.
  2. I notice my shift pedal bushing has a fair amount of play/wear. It appears most of the wear is in the bushing. The bushing is not available separately....you have to buy the complete pedal assembly. Has anyone attempted or come up with a bushing replacement...dimensions/sizes?? Is the bushing material bronze? Thanks.
  3. Before you do anything get as many details as you can on the trike and check it out with your insurance company. I hear they are very 'sticky' about trikes. From what i have also heard only several styles of trikes are 'legal' in Canada. I guess there are always ways around that. My friend has a Harley with a Motor Trike conversion...converted in Canada by a Canadian dealer and he had some issues getting it insured. I also know a reputable dealer who sells Lehman Trike conversions here and has for many years. Good luck!
  4. Condor....try looking under 'Cruiser'......then 'Street Product Search' and you will be able to get information for 1st Gen. Venture.
  5. Condor.....Yes u are right about the AD's. And come to think of it on the '85 the AD's are removed...they were leaking i think...or some other problem. Although my bike was bottoming out on very harsh bumps...some driveway ramps etc........and not really on hard braking (dive). Unless the AD's are staying on??? I will check that. Rick.....how did you calculate the spring rate at 1.20 kg/mm??? I used Race Tech's calculater and came up with .917 kg/mm based on my weight at 170 plus some riding gear.....and made it 180 lbs. Do the emulater kits come with instructions on how and where to drill dampening rods etc???? Very interesting information. Thanks.
  6. Thanks for the replies. Condor....I did check and slightly adjust steering head bearings......it wasn't a problem or related. Thanks Rick for the links and information...I will do some research and reading. Did you experience noticeable difference in ride when you did the modifications on your '93?? (I'm assuming it was a VR) Did you do the work yourself or send the shocks out?? What I don't understand is why my brother's '85 with no modifications and all stock (we have had his apart for seals) rides so differently from mine. I believe they are basically identical shocks. I bought my Venture/a Venture based on the ride comfort I experienced on his. Thanks again!!
  7. I am dealing with suspension issues. Have an '88 VR purchased last August. Immediately I wasn't happy with suspension/ride...felt rough/'harsh' and bottoming out. I had a comparison bike in that my brother has an '85 VR..stock springs and rides very smoothly...and no bottoming out issues. So I replaced with progressives as many recommmend here...but still find a 'harsh' ride on sharp bumps and a sort of firm bouncy spongy action on other bumps. I have played with oil levels and different spring spacer thicknesses and tried no air to various air pressure settings....but can't seem to get improvement on my ride. I have had the forks off and apart and cleaned and done bushings and seals and dust seals. I have also added a fork brace. I use 10W fork oil. I weigh about 167 lbs. I even took the progressives out and went back to the OE springs to see if it was different/better but ended up putting progressives back in. As i said.....even now with everything i've done and tried.....the ride on my bike is not near the ride comfort level I feel on my bother's '85. Any help/suggestions/recommendations?? Am i missing something? Should i look elsewhere? I believe for this bike and weight of the bike...i should have a better level of ride comfort.

  9. I am a Venture guy but also a Fiero guy. Have an '88 GT and '86 SE. Some years back a guy from work was at the Port Dover Fri. 13th event here and took a picture of this trike. It's a Fiero. Picture isn't great but you can get the idea. Go figure!
  10. I have had the rear wheel off of my '88 Venture. Didn't remove any luggage, racks, fenders etc. I followed a procedure I found here or possibly the Venturer's M/C site (sorry).....not sure any more. Basically you set bike on center stand. 'Secure' stand in position to the bike frame with cable/wire/rope to prevent it from 'collapsing'. Remove front tire (an easy 10 minute or less job) and allow bike to rest on ground on the forks (i used a small jack under the front of the frame...to gently lower it down...the bike is well balanced in this positon and 'weight load' is light). This in turn causes the rear of the bike to rise which will allow removal of the rear wheel. You do have to remove the right side muffler. Maybe someone can direct you to the 'post' (if it is here)....with the total detailed instructions (this is the basic short version). Or maybe someone else is aware of this method and can fill in details. When I first read it....I questioned it....but it worked great for me. It saves a lot of 'extra' work.
  11. Are these lights available at all Walmarts in USA? I am in Canada and a friend was just across the border in NY and checked several Walmarts there and they said they don't carry them. When available.....how much is Walmart selling them for?? I notice JC Whitney carries them too...so i may order from them. Are the brackets still available here? Thanks.
  12. If your looking for a replacement stator....I notice this place selling on ebay regularly. It's called RM Stator (it's in Quebec, Canada). Another popular place is called Rick's Motorsport Electrics (USA). Both places have websites...just google them. I have no experience dealing with them but their names come up regularly.
  13. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and recommendations. I did find a previous thread....about a year ago giving similar info.......should have checked first. I am with Dominion Insurance for my auto and home policies...and my agent did mention they where in the bike business now too...but I was told...as of my last renewal a year ago...they wanted riders to have 6 years riding experience. I am currently only in my 4th riding season. So.....many have recommended Riders Plus so i will persue my quote there. Does anyone have claim's experience with them?? Thanks
  14. I've just received my insurance renewal and am shopping for competitive quotes. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've done some checking online and most online quotes match my current renewal within approx. $25.00. I did an online quote with 'Riders Plus Insurance' (Toronto, Ontario) and they are $153.00 cheaper for the same coverage. I would follow up the online quote with a phone call to confirm information and price. Does anyone have coverage/experience/comments on this company? Thanks
  15. Are you still open to take more orders?? I have an "88 Venture. I would be interested. What kind of delivery date for these? Thanks. rez
  16. I just recently found the 'gorideontario' site also. Printed out 10 maps. I have already been on parts of some of the routes..great riding. And have also done the West Montrose covered bridge. So lots of riding to do this season. Wsih the snow would STOP! Another blast this afternoon. Thanks for posting that info for everyone.
  17. I have also thought about and am checking out obtaining and installing floor boards. I've been watching ebay...and notice....as mentioned....they always go for big dollars....no matter what the conditon is. There is a set listed right now..and a heel/toe shifter too. I know bidding will go crazy within the last hour of the auction. 'Okscooter' raises some good points for consideration about the boards....things i didn't think of. I am just over 6 feet....and also feel the need to stretch out a little. I have added highway pegs to the crash bars and played around with positioning them....and have found a good comfortable spot. Works great to stretch out when on a long ride. Maybe I'll stick with what i have. rez
  18. I chased a 'pesky' leak on the left side of my '88 Venture (in the same area you are talking about). It was dropping/seeping oil on to the exhaust causing a burn't oil odour occassionally. Turned out to be the neutral start/shift indicator switch......it's the white plastic 3 screw cover and has 5/6 wires to it. The oil appeared to be leaking by the copper inserts moulded into the palstic housing. After replacing this no more leaks. Initially I checked and repaired the side cover gasket...checked and resealed the bolt with the copper washer etc...all the things mentioned here so far...but resolved it when i replaced the switch.

    Headsets

Thankyou to all for the replies and advice. I have also seen this J&M HS8154 set on Ebay at several places for around $60.00...but always a catch for Canadians or International shipping or vendors not dealing with people outside USA. I don't get it. Our money is good too. Currently I have no contacts in the USA I can use. I have a friend visiting in the USA right now but they will be coming back on the 11th so not enough time to do the transaction. When I can make the arrangements I will be buying this set. Thanks everyone. rez

    Headsets

I am considering a J&M Model HS8154 headset for a 3/4 helmet ( I have an '88 Venture Royale). Is this a decent quality product? I have seen it mentioned here a few times. I am probably looking to use it with the CB more than anything else...just to communicate with others I am riding with. And then probably only looking to use it on a limited basis. I ride solo most of the time so not really looking to communicate with passengers. If anyone has other suggestions let me know.......and if you know make, model etc. I would appreciate it. I have seen the recommendations to shop at WingStuff but as a Canadian I will pay a premium in shipping, duties etc. to get it here. So suggestions for that would be appreciated too. Thanks! rez
  21. Can anyone comment on the Muzzys 6 blade aluminum fan. I notice one available on Ebay right now..and I checked out their website too (same price as Ebay item). I have a 1988 Venture Royale....and notice on hotter days with 'low' or little airflow engine temp runs high. I know they are 'known' for this. Would this fan provide better cooling/cool down? What about fan noise? I appreciate any comments or experience with this item. Thanks. rez
  22. Thanks for the offer. The spring looks ok.........and tension seems ok. But there is something 'wonky' about the stand or maybe the geometry???...I think a previous owner changed something. I will sit tight and see if anyone here responds. I see a stand on ebay right now.......and know of one availably locally....i just need to make sure it will fit and work with my exhaust.
  23. I have a 1988 Venture Royale with MAC exhaust. Should the centre stand fold and lock in place properly with this exhaust? I notice the original factory exhaust is notched to allow for the stand to clear.....the MAC exhaust isn't. It appears my centre stand foot actuator bar/pedal has been reworked to allow clearance around the exhaust.....but it lacks proper spring tension and there is nothing to lock it tight. With poor spring tension it seems to bounce up and down easily. I have presently tie wrapped it to hold it secure. Please comment or give me direction on this. Thanks. rez
  24. Is fork oil really a specially blended product specifically designed for the application or is it simply a straight weight oil. At approx. 3 times the price of any regular/quality oil....I begin to wonder. Or is it a marketing thing.....driving up the price because of the word 'motorcycle' and 'fork' ???? Could i just use a straight weight #10 oil ??? I can't believe that the forks on our bikes are so sophisticated that such a highly priced product is required. I appreciate comments and suggestions. Someone in a previous thread even suggested using a multigrade synthetic 0W20 or 0W30 ??? I am in the process of installing progressive springs and am wondering what oil to use. Thanks! rez
  25. I have a 1988 Venture Royale. I'm wanting to change and flush engine coolant. What is the recommendation for coolant? I have access to Toyota Long Life type (dark red colour).....would this be suitable/ acceptable?? As i understand it.....it should be mixed 50/50...is that correct? Thanks. rez
