  1. I don't know Bob and have not been on this web-site for quite some time. It is very unfortunate to hear of his accident. My prayers go out to Bob for a speedy and full recovery, to his family, and the doctors and nurses attending Bob.
  2. Unfortunately the rally is scheduled in the middle of plant shutdown and I will be working. Depending on which shift I am on (don't know this yet) I would like to come out for the day or an evening. I will let you know when I find out which probably will not be until the week before and hopefully my daughter and I will come down and meet up with some people. It is only about an hours ride for me to Kitchener. Doug
  3. Great article Carl, and nice pictures make it very understandable.
  4. Great pictures of an engine rebuild. Since I have not had one apart it was interesting to see!!!
  5. A great web-site that I have learned a lot from and hope to learn more from. Thanks to Don and all the contributors!!!!!!
  6. I use the Rotella T 15w40 oil in my 1984VR. It has worked well for me and it is a diesel oil. Rotella T 15w40 has very good shear stability.
  7. Just ordered Ride Like a Pro V. Looking forward to receiving it, viewing and practicing when weather permits. Would never have known about it except for this website. Donna even gave me a discount when she asked how I heard about them and I told them it was Venturerider.org. Thanks again to the people of this website!!!!!
  8. At one time I worked for Shell Canada in lubricant research. Because motorcycles cycle their motor oil, in most cases, through the transmission, they require an oil that is very shear stable. If the oil is not shear stable you will not get the hydrodynamic protection from the oil as it will shear out of grade. Most passenger car engine oil is not shear stable. If you changed your oil frequently you could still use a passenger car oil (maybe every 1500 miles depending on driving conditions). Synthetics is another issue. There is a lot of info on this including postings on this site in the past.
  9. Many imigrants come to our country and want to change it to be like their country. They forget that there was a reason that they left their home country. While I am so greatful to be living in Canada and next door to the United States I recognize that part of what makes these two countries great is tolerance. However, sometimes this tolerance goes too far and we end up standing for nothing. Rest assured and unfortunately if I was in many other countries in the world my beliefs would not be met with near the tolerance that their beliefs are met with here.
  10. I like: the look, great handling at speed, not expensive, exhaust is quiet so I can come home in the middle of the night and not wake up the whole neighborhood.(although sometimes it would be nice to make a lot of rumble).
  11. Thanks for the info. I will buy the video in the very near future. As a new rider and this being my first bike I had trouble handling the bike at low speeds. I practiced last year and improved a great deal but feel I still have much room to improve. I watched Jerry P's video but was not sure if I would need to buy the whole set or could just start with #V. Again thanks. I have read many comments on this web site and have to agree that the information and help available here is just tremendous!
  12. I have been thinking of buying a video from Ride Like a Pro. Which one do you recommend the most and why.
  13. Kevin, could be as simple as a bad plug. Maybe the casing ion the plug got cracked during or before installation. Also is the gap correct on the plugs. Also check the connections of the plug wires. It seems to me if it was running well before this probably has something to do with what has been done to it lately, so check all vacuum lines or anything else that was disturbed during the tune up. Best of luck!
  14. Thanks for the information GeorgeS.
  15. While the snow piles up in the driveway, all I can do is think about the maintenance I will do on the 84 Venture in about a month when I can get near the shed again. Last year, among other things I bled all the brakes and some foul looking fluid came out. It looked like on the front forks there was a bleeder for the brakes and a secondary bleeder for the shocks. I have not noticed any fluid on the top part of the shocks so I am not thinking that the seals are leaking. Is it possible for fluid to leak from the front brakes into the shock. Are these two systems linked or how do they work? I was also going to bleed the clutch this year. Is the slave cylinder hard to get at for bleeding? Hope the people in the south are enjoying riding. It will be at least a month before we can ride in southern Ontario.
  16. Interesting comment on the use of Pledge. When I bought my bike I spent as lot of time cleaning it and it really cleaned up well. I used a Rain Dance cleaner that worked very well but took a lot of time. Even ended up getting good comments from my buddy who is a wing is the only bike in the world type of person.
  17. I would not replace the water pump seal unless it was leaking. Sometimes taking something apart and rebuilding it for no apparent reason creates more problems than it solves.
  18. You guys are talking about changing all the fluids. Just wondering what you use for differential fluid? I am riding a 1984 with 60k kilometers on it. I really like the bike but I am concerned about problems because of its age. Thinking About buying a newer Venture or a Harley. Any comments?
  19. I am using Rotella T 15w40. It has very good shear stability which means that it stays in grade. Motorcycles are very hard on oils shearing them out of grade because most circulate the oil through the transmission. Yesterday I saw this oil for sale at Part Source.
  20. I have the Metzeler ME880 Marathon tires on the front and rear of my 1984 vr. Just the other day I was looking at the rear tire and thought maybe I had a crack in it. On a closer look it appears to be a blemish in the tire as suggested by one member of this site. As far as wear goes they have at least 4000 miles on them and there is a lot of tread left. In regards to a speed wobble I have not noticed one but the top speed I have gone would be about 80mph. handling has been good, even in the rain, but have not rode this bike on any other tires. Hope this is of some help. Doug
  21. Thanks for the information Yammer Dan!!
  22. I know what you mean Yammer Dan. While waiting for my daughter outside of her part time job I noticed the crack and it spooked me all the way home. I now you live in the states but about how much was a replaced tire and did you buy a Metzeler? Another question is since I have a Metzeler an the ront do I need to have a Metzeler on the back (which is the one with the crack in it)? Thanks for the info and your concern!!
  23. Looks to me like a crack forming. According to the metzeler website and the DOT number the tire was produced in the 13th week of 2003. Thanks for the advice I will have a much closer look!!!!
  24. I have Metzeler ME880 Marathon tires on the front and the rear of my 1984 VR. These tires are not very old and have alot of tread left on them. I have owned the bike for a year and know that the tires may be 3 years old based on info from the previous owner. Now to my question. I noticed on the rear tire about half way up the sidewall a wavy thin crack extending about 4 to 6 inches aong the tire. This pattern continues around the tire in the form of a black line for maybe 20 inches. I am do not know the construction of these tires. Do I need to be worried about this tire blowing out on me while riding? I would appreciate some advice as I do not want this tire to cause any problems while riding.
  25. My 84 has the same problem and I was going to try and fix it but maybe from what I am reading I will just leave it alone. If it does fail me one day then I will change my mind but so far it has not let me down.
