    Front tire noise

Hello everyone I'm new to this site and I like it , very informative. I bought an 09 RSV in January and have loged about 16000 kms. since then, love the bike. The only thing so far that kind of anoys me , is the whine from the front tire. It does not matter wether i'm leaning left or right that loud whine comes up through the forks and it drives me nuts. I'll be changing tires in the spring .Any recomendations on quiet front tires? Thanks Gus...
  2. You should here the Screaming Whine In the FJR in 1st, 2nd 3rd beyond that is the wind noise:rotfl:
  3. Not sure if this is the right place but a coworker found a '97 Royal Star and fell in love with it except for one thing--He says there is a loud whine between gears when he is down shifting. I have never heard of this and thought I would throw it out to you guys. He said there is no whine when cruising or when up shifiting only between gears when downshifing.. Should he be concerned?

    How to avoid a lemon

Thanks to my new found aquaintances, I have made the decision to buy a used RSV. I have located 3 or 4 in the local area, and they are all in the $7000 to $8000 range, with most being 2003 models. What do I look for, and what do I avoid? One of them has a Corbin seat that seems much harder than the stock one, and cost the original owner hundreds of dollars. Keep it, or have the dealer swap it for a stock one from one of the other bikes in the showroom? What's with the chat about clutch or gear whine? Something I need to know or worry about? I think you all get the idea. I do NOT ask that you buy the bike for me, but I know nothing about this model, and welcome any and all assistance. God bless you all, and thanks in advance.
  5. I just read the tech section in my October issue of Motorcycle Cruiser. A reader wrote in to ask Mark Zimmerman in the Shop Talk section about a Royal Star that has a whine in the rear end. The reader talked about proper shimming and all of his experience. Mr Zimmerman's response was "I'm not aware of any specific or generic problems with the Royal Star's final drive..... I did a quick internet search and nothing jumped out at me, so if you have info to the contrary please let me know so I can find out what's going on." I emailed him instantly, gave him a list of web sites to investigate , including Venturerider.org, If you have any information for Mr. Zimmerman reguarding a whine in a Royal Star I think he deserves an email at zimmemr@aol.com. Lets see if he can make good on his promise to "find out what's going on."
  6. I've been changing oil twice a year with about 1000 miles between. Last year I changed the oil and put in amsoil with the MotorKote additive. The whine became unbearable at 55-60 mph so I dumped it out and put mobile 1 back in. Now the whine is guaranteed to show up at 55mph and yesterday a chirp showed up. Tomorrow I'm going to change oil again and this time I'm going to put Mobile 1 20w50 in it. It's really getting aggravating when people on the street stare at you and I know I'm not THAT unattractive, nor is my Venture. If anybody has any theories on this I sure would be willing to try them. I haven't bought the oil yet but I will tomorrow. My plan is to have a nice ride or 2 at Potato Creek w/o people staring at my bike because of the whine Thanks in advance
  7. I read all the info in these threads but I think my noise is different. I would discribe it as a bird chirping. It is engine related as it only makes the noise at cruise speed in any gear. Most noticably in 4th and 5th with little load on the engine. As soon as you give it some gas, it stops, and if you clutch, it stops. It started around 400 mile and has become louder to now at 1400 miles. I had the shop look for hose / vacuum leaks, but nothing showed up. Does this make any sence to anyone ? It also drives me nuts. 2009 RSTD Ran the fatory oil to 600 miles, then change oil to 20/50 synthetic V-Twin Mobil 1 Didn't make any difference. Gary
  8. I was on you tube and found this video its a vulcan 900 I believe. Tell me I'm not hearing things it has a whine also. I'm not feeling so bad about mine now. I still ordered the 424 mufflers though. here's the video [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R498Yy7nyvA]YouTube- Go Pro HD Full HD1080p: 1920x1080[/ame]
  9. Ok, I know this subject has been written about many times. Please trust that I have read many posts on the whine. My issue does seem to be a bit different than the others I have read, so here goes. I have a 08 RSTD. Bought it used last November and loved it from the first time I sat on it. Had a 04 BMW R1150RT that I never did never "clicked" with. Not the RSTD, it was love at first ride. I read as much as I could find on the whine as soon as I joined VentureRider. After getting what I think is a pretty good understanding of the whine I concluded that I did, in fact have it, though not bad at all. I would say, like many that have written here before, I would not have noticed it without reading about it. A “George Jettson Car sound” from start to stop, nothing else. I rode through the fall, into the winter (God Bless Texas) and finally spring. Now this is the warmest it has been since I owed the bike. As soon as the weather hit 70+ degrees it started. Between 39-42 mph (by my GPS, not Speedo) I now have a deafening Howl! This sounds nothing like the whine. It is of a frequency that seems to go right through my earplugs and into my skull. Ok, ok, it’s only between 39-42 mph, right? I can easily drive around that. Sure, no problem. Forward a few more weeks. Now it’s 80+ degrees and I still have the 39-42 mph issue and now have added 60-65 mph. Same sound, a howl that it comes from nowhere and drives me NUTS! This cannot stay. I am more than happy to take it in and have the clutch replaced. It just doesn’t seem to quite fit the classic “whine” scenario. Now for some background facts: The bike now has 7500 miles. The oil is Castrol Dino 20W-50 No Motorkote or any other additives. It not the tires because the howl stops as soon as pull in the clutch The bike had its 4k service last Nov. The howl didn’t start till spring What do you learned gentlemen and gentle ladies think the issue is? :confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24::confused24:
  10. Well, I did my 4000 mile oil change the other day. I went from the Yamalube to the Rotella T6 along with a Pure One Purolator Oil filter. So my oil weight went from 10w-40 down to 5w-40 and a full synthetic. I also added about 8oz of MotorKote. My whine is still audible at low speeds, but in 4th and 5th gear the whine is TOTALLY gone now. :-) I am very happy with it so far...so we'll see if it gets even better over time...but now my MOTORCYCLE sounds like a MOTORCYCLE in 4th and 5th gear!! Wally
  11. My troubles began about a month ago when I had an oil change and decided to try a synthetic by using Mobile 1 20w-50. My whine (which really didn't bother me) turned into a scream. I talked with the service manager and he grudgingly agreed to get me an "I" basket and we both agreed on going back to Dino. The factory tech suggested Yamalube (surprise) 20w-50. When I first drove the bike it seemed to be considerably better-the scream back to a whine and at a different pitch. A 100 miles later the whine is getting louder and so I decide to try Rotella 15w-40 and major difference. I'm beginning to believe it's the oil viscosity and will try 10w-30 at the next oil change (I've had 3 oil changes in the last 200 miles). It may not be just the basket but also viscosity. For the 1st 4000 miles I was using Yamalube 10w-40 and the whine didn't bother me. I had thought my troubles began when I went to synthetic, but I now believe it was because of the change to 20w-50. After I enjoy my bike again for a while, I may try synthetic again but at no higher than 40 weight-I think Amsoil makes a 10w-30. Something to think about!
  12. I'm changing oil AGAIN ! Last spring I changed to Amsoil, bike seemed to be OK, then it started 'whining' again so I bought a quart of MotorCoat and added a few ounces. The 'whine' got louder but I let it go until this year. After the few rides I've been able to do so far (about 300 miles) it seems like the 'whine' is still there and VERY annoying. Right now the bike is sitting in the garage dripping, has been for 20 minutes or so. I'm going back to Mobile One and NO Motorcoat - see how that does on the ride to DC this coming weekend. I guess I should qualify the above statement - my habits include camping with our Travel Trailer, fishing and I work a part time job. All of that means that I may get around 3 or 4 thousand miles a year. Changing oil twice a year IS expensive when it's $10 a quart and not enough miles to warrant a change.
  13. When I switched to Mobile1 20w-50 synthetic, I went from a whine (never had a chirp) to a scream. Dealer just switched my basket to an "I" and put me back on Yamaha lube 20w-50 (at my request) and I'm back to a gentle whine at a different pitch and almost no whine in 5th. I can actually hear my mufflers now. I had an "F" basket and according to Rick Butler I probably should have tried a "G" basket, but don't want to push my dealer too much. At the next oil change I'll probably go back to 10w-40, but no more synthetic for me.
  14. I have searched the site to death about the whine these bikes have but need a little clairification on it. Is the whine everyone talks about the gear noise when accelerating up through the gears? I get a loud whine or growl I would call it when going up through the gears, it softens up when cruising and then at higher speeds I don't hear much at all. Just checking to see if the growl is what everyone is calling a whine? I know mines not worn with only having 6,000 miles on it but just want to be sure nothing is wrong before the long summer trips. This is the first Venture I've owned since many years ago. My other bike is a Harley Road King and it makes all kinds of strange noises but that is normal for them. I have changed all my fluids except for the antifreeze which I am going to do tomorrow(can't believe I have to pull the tank to do it), and I am waiting on new tires as these are the original 2000 tires on it now. i just want to be sure I have covered everything before hitting the road. I have split the fairing and braced the windshield and repaired the tabs on the windshield chrome thanks to the info here. I have certianly gotten my money's worth out of the site already so I was glad to donate my 12.00. thanks to all who have helped me so far and I look forward to meeting some of you out there on the road one day.
  15. Ok, I'd like to know how much whine is too much or normal. I will be getting barons 424 slipon mufflers in the next week or so. But I was just wondering how much whine is too much? I put a video from my Go Pro on you tube and if link works maybe I could get an idea if I should try the I basket deal or just put the mufflers on and ride. hopefully here's the link [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzN9EMtI0_s]YouTube- Yamaha RSTD whine?[/ame]
  16. Just had my oil changed and went with synthetic (Mobile1 20-40). After 200 miles the whine is noticeably worse. I thought that the syn might actually help quiet the clutch basket (I assume that's where the whine originates?), but it seems the opposite has happened. Has this happened to anyone else? My new slip-ons don't begin to compensate for the increase in whine. Any ideas? Is my only choice to go back to Dino? Thanks!
  17. Well my 2001 has a bit of a whine. Not to bad but enough to let you know it's there. About 60 in 4th. Seems to be worse with a little acceleration. When the engine is not under pressure it is quite. It kinda forces me into 5th earlier than I want but my Venture seems to do fine in 5th at about 45. I just don't accelerate very hard or I down shift and put up with the whine. I read all the post about Motorkote and thought I would give it a try. I had a oil leak from a bad gasket in the middle gear so I replaced it. I topped off the oil (which had about 1500 miles on it) with 7 oz of Motorkote. I can not tell any difference in the intensity or the frequency (RPM's) of the whine. The engine does seem to be running smoother and it sifts easier but no difference in the whine. My next oil change I will switch to synthetic motor oil and put about 8 more oz of Motorkote. Hopefully the clean oil and fresh Motorkote will do the trick. I did run the bike pretty hard to test the Motorkote to make sure it did not cause my clutch to slip since Motorkote is a friction modifier and no slipping.
  18. Installed fishtail mufflers couple of days ago and just got the clamps. These mufflers are a lot lighter than stock and just wondered if I needed to make brackets or just go as is? They feel rigid with no play and the clamps really tightened down well. As a side note, I've never complained about the "whine", but after installing them the whine is very noticeable. Hard to believe that the mufflers would effect the whine, but I haven't put the saddlebags back on and that may make the difference. Anyone notice the whine getting worse when changing mufflers? I am definitely keeping my stock mufflers just in case, but I'm no longer hesitant to pull along side a Harley at a light. Of course they can hear them well from the rear when we're rolling.
  19. Well spring FINALLY arrived here in Michigan. 50+ degrees , so its time for the FIRST ride of the season. "HAD" the screemin whines all last season, found this web site by chance, read that some of you FINE FOLKS did too! So I read all your suggestions, and ACTED ON THEM. I took my '07RSTD to The Owosso Yamaha dealer, they installed a new "I' basket in Dec. under warranty and delivered her back sometime after new year. Then I installed MOBIL 1 fully synthetic oil and waited till the new season. Took her out today, hoping for the best. To my JOY, NO WHINE, at ANY speed, she even shifts smoother. Thank you so much, all the members of VR.org who post helpful hints to a better ride. Im glad to be a member and visit almost daily.
  20. Not sure how I did it, but the infamous "whine" has all but disappeared! I screwed up on the last oil change about 2 weeks ago and re-added about 7 oz. of Motorkote after the change, when I should have skipped this change. But it looks like adding a second round of the stuff has eliminated the whine. I had the bike out all day yesterday and today in this beautiful GA weather - mid 60's and sunny for a change - and it is running perfectly. Got about 48 combined MPG's too. Amazing.
  21. Yeeehaaaa!! First ride of the year!! Man did that feel great! PMS all gone (for a few days at least!) Brand new 130/90 front tire... what a difference!! Scoot handles so much better at low speed although it does tend to track a bit differently at highway speed. No more whine since the "I" basket went in ... just the bark of the RK's and some good tunes commin out of the XM is all I heard. yeeeeehhhhhaaaaaaaa! Snapped a shot parked at White Rock ... look at that calm water and blue sky! Luv It ! (am I pumped or what?) [ATTACH]41267[/ATTACH]
  22. Now we have one so let's all make a choice and see where it goes. The "I" basket seems to have cured mine.
  23. I used the search option and can't seen to find a poll on how many have the "whine" vs how many do not. I found a poll ref: to how many have fixed the problem, but no one that would give an average on how many bike have the problem. If anyone knows of a poll could you post a link.

A new Rumble on the road

After doing my home werk and input from the board I effortlessly put on a set of Khrome werks 3 HP. Basically they are plug n play and WOW what a dandy rumble without being obnoxious. I am deeply in love with my RSTD ... there is nothing like having a 4cyl sounds so fine with these harmonics and the tranny whine is muted. PS I am going to get an air horn and will be selling my mint new in box pre catalytic road king left/right slip on with chrome attachments MAX :dancefool:
  25. Took a while but got her done. Painted bike black has blue pearl flake and silver looks great in the sun. Put on alot of billet chrome. Black was original whine color. Got her out yesterday, had some nice weather here in Mississauga ontario at last. Screaming Red:Venture:
