  1. I thought this crap didn't happen in Texas. Of course everything's BIGGER in Texas so we can't just get snow that you can drive on, it had to rain all night first and then sleet for 4 hours so there's a 1/2 inch of solid ice on everything!! We're supposed to end up with 12-18" of snow.
  2. pick

    Texas LE

Any Texas LE officers in the Amarillo area? Need a professional question answered? PM me?
  3. Guys- I know some of you may have interest in this. I NEVER intended to ride in snow...but we got stuck in a once per 20 year phenomena. We had an inch on our tent at 9AM. Don's battery failed- we had to charge it, but the Texas State Park let us use their charger, and by 3 we were on the road. The pavement was freezing, but by days end the snow stopped. We had Walmart chemical warmers but it was miserable. I am now in a nice cozy Motel 6 in Victoria, Texas. It will be in the 20's when we leave tomorrow. I'm just glad we got out of Houston before this crap hit us! I started a new blog, an since I like theatrics, am going by the blog name of Skeeter Speaks. You can find it here: http://skeeterspeaks.blogspot.com/2009/12/motorcycling-in-snow.html Please take a look if you want. I'll be posting more when we get south of the border. Thanks to all that have helped me in the past!!!!
  4. Here in Amarillo, we have a nice coating of ice other everything. yippie.....
  5. Thom, Hope you guys made it back from the Sisters.. Sounded like you two had a Blast Sorry about not meeting up but you know the story..Anyway glad you liked my part of TEXAS!
  6. on Tuesday Oct 12 , my mom had a severe stroke.she is now in a therapy/rehab facility, ,that is almost as good as a 5 star hotel! the "it's official", part is that i RETIRED so that i could be here at my sister,s home to help out with all that is going on. i can't say i don't miss going to work, but i do miss the "visiting with the guys " part. coming to ya live from Danbury Texas. just jt
  7. I started having the dreaded popping at deceleration again. My AIS is connected and I have new spark plugs (as of June, 5K on them). There is no noticeable cracks in the vacuum lines or carb nipple covers. I do have some leakage at the "Y" pipes. Before the Texas Panhandle Maintenance Day I put a can of 44K in the gas tank, ran it one day, let it sit for three days and then we took off towards North Texas. The popping is gone. If you think you have dirty carburetors and Seafoam hasn't helped, try the 44K. Ponch
  8. Went for a 500 mile ride today. While passing through Lampasas, Texas I saw two nice Ventures. While sitting at a light, a very nice 2008 crossed the intersection. It had a PGR banner on the windshield. About a quarter mile past there, a very clean, very shiny Midnight RSV, towing a trailer and riding 2up passed the other direction. Wish I had time to chase them down but I was on a schedule... Nice to see 3 ventures in a small town!
  9. Five years ago I sold my 2000 Millennium Venture - went to a VTX 1800 and then to an Ultra Classic. Last week I found another Millennium Venture and it only had 13,000 miles. I got it for 6 grand! I'm going to pick it up in Louisiana on our way home from Texas in two weeks. I had planned to ride it home but it is snowing today in Iowa so to be safe I will get a trailer. It is good to be back!
  10. My wife flew this past weekend to Denver to visit her sister. Playing around with MapSource, I saw that it was 1070ish miles from Houston to there. I'd wanted to ride an ironbutt for some time, so I took this opportunity and did it. I left Houston around 5AM on Thursday, headed to Lubbock for lunch. My son is a freshman at Texas Tech, and it was a chance to see him. Lubbock is about halfway on the route I'd plotted, so I figured it would take 9 hours to get there. I was about right, getting there about 2:30. We lunched at Orlando's Italian Restaurant, because Texas Monthly had recently judged their's the 10th best burger in Texas.[1] From there I went to Denver via Raton. I took this chance to try out the sheepskin I had bought at IKEA for $30. It rained most of the way to Lubbock, but was sunny from there out. Great sheepskin weather. Or so I thought.[2] Even though it wasn't raining, it was blowing hard. Hard enough that my bike thought I was doing 95mph and my mpg suffered. I saw another post today where someone gets more than 39mpg. I rarely will break 35mpg, and with the headwind and climbing in elevation, I got closer to 25mpg. The worst of the trip was the trip over Raton Pass. My legs hurt, I couldn't get comfortable, and the temperature dropped like a stone. My windscreen and headlamps were plastered with bugs when I finally pulled into Raton. I warmed up a little in the gas station and pressed on, within smelling distance of Colorado. I finally arrived at my sister-in-law's at 11:15 local, 12:30AM my time. I'd gone 1063 miles by the GPS, in 19.5 hours. They say it typically takes 18 hours, and I spent an hour with my son in Lubbock. I also stopped for gas about every 80 miles. My wife's flight was delayed, and she arrived 15 minutes after I did. She found me asleep in the rocking chair that I'd sat in to wait for her. LOL Even being tuckered, I woke up on auto-pilot at 8AM. By 10AM, my wife and I were heading to Wyoming for lunch. And to "color in my map". I planned to hit WY, NE, and KS, but we ran short of time--dinner was waiting. Had I pushed a little harder, I could have made the 1500 miles in 36 hour "Butt Burner". Oh well. The next day, Saturday, I headed home. I went out of my way to pick up Kansas. That's a pretty state. With no need to push it, I stopped at Wichita Falls, TX. I'd been in CO, KS, OK, and then TX. I like riding at night, so I was tempted to push on. But when I saw the ETA creep over 2AM, and I kept getting hit by large wet bugs, I stopped. Sunday was an easy ride home. Got there around 2PM. Final tally for the trip was 2637 miles. Notes: [1] - No way is that the 10th best burger in TX. Texas Monthly is plain wrong. They also gave something like 15 of the best burgers to Austin, and practically ignored Houston. This would be closer to the 50th spot in any list I made. I ought to do that. [2] - The sheepskin. Yeah, it's wrong for me when I am using luggage. It's nice and cushy to start, but then it pushed me to ride on the tank. It also rode up and pressed on my tailbone. I was much happier ignoring it when riding with the luggage, and sticking with my "Butt Butler" seat. That is comfy all day long. Pictures follow. If you want to see bigger versions, I can scare up a link to my Flickr account. Dave
  11. I have yet to order a CarbTune and I just flat out have not had the time to make my own yet and I still need a tachometer but I've been reading a lot lately about the signs that lead one to believe that it is time to do a carb sync and I feel that my bike is due... So here it is; Is there someone in or near west Texas that has a equipment, know-how, time, and patience to meet up with me and give me a hand syncing my carbs? I have an 01 RSV and am in Lubbock, Texas. I'll certainly be happy to meet you wherever and at your convenience of course. Thanks in advance! - Rick M.
  12. As of September 1 its now illegal in Texas to carry a child under the age of 5 on a motorcycle, UNLESS: The child is in a sidecar, OR its an emergency. The first offense ticket is $100. Big brother is watching! BTW...how is a cop supposed to know if a child is only 4 years and 10 months old unless you tell him??? ( hint hint ) And what defines an 'emergency'? I mean, maybe the little 3 year old is throwing a fit to go for a ride!!! Oh well...I dont have kiddos anyway....
  13. Here's a bunch more things changing for Texas this month. Here's an excerpt from the newsbytes I handed out the info at our ABATE meeting Tuesday night. THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. For more information, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit us on our website at www.ON-A-BIKE.com. NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) MULTI-FACETED MOTORCYCLE BILL ENACTED IN TEXAS Senate Bill 1967, authored by Texas State Senator John Carona (R-Dallas) and sponsored by Representative Norma ”Da’Lady” Chavez (D-El Paso), introduces many motorcycle-related changes in the Lone Star State. Included in the bill are 1) funding by Texas Department of Transportation for a public awareness campaign to promote motorcyclist safety and the concept of sharing the road with motorcyclists; 2) changes to the definition of a motorcycle to include certain enclosed three-wheeled passenger vehicles; 3) changes to the licensing requirements for enclosed three-wheeled passenger vehicles; 4) a requirement for all applicants for a motorcycle license or endorsement on a regular or commercial driver's license to provide proof of successful completion of a basic motorcycle operator training course; 5) penalties for failure to yield the right-of-way violations resulting in bodily injury range from $500 to $2,000 while those resulting in serious bodily injury range from $1,000 to $4,000; 6) a prohibition against stopping or detaining a motorcycle operator or passenger solely to determine whether the person has successfully completed a motorcycle operator training and safety course or is covered by a health insurance plan; 7) a requirement for the Department of Transportation to develop a standard of proof of health insurance coverage for adult motorcycle operators and passengers; and 8) a requirement that all driver education courses or driving safety courses include information on motorcycle awareness, dangers of failure to yield the right-of-way to motorcyclists, and the need to share the road with motorcyclists. Governor Rick Perry signed the bill into law on June 19; it becomes effective September 1, 2009. “We made history, Warriors,” exclaimed Sputnik, State Chairman of the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association (TMRA-II) and Chairman of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF). “We owe Da’Lady and her entire staff a huge debt of gratitude for all the work they did for riders this session.” Just for everyone's info, Scooter Bob

  22. Well many of you know that Lonna and I are headed towards Texas, Tennessee is an awsome state, but there are too many from michigan and the surrounding states headed there. What I need from some of you folks is options for moving. We have done the Pensky trucks before and I know about them. Seems right now it's a supply and demand thing and they are truly rediculous in price. I thought about the PODS thing, but they want more paperwork filled out than when I joined the Military, just to get a quote. Needless to say I am not impressed. Please let me know of any of your experiences and avenues for shipping the household to Texas. I'm not necessarily looking for someone to come in and pack it all, we can handle that. I'm just looking for options and obviously a good price, right now it's looking like a $3K deal if we rent a truck and the fuel and whatnot....I'm not impressed with that either I'll be keeping an open mind and hopefully we'll get some alternate ideas, as always, Thanks in advance.
  23. Would it be possible to add a feature to the member listing that will allow us to sort on city? I'm taking a trip and trying to find members in the city I am going to, but it requires scrolling through all of the Texas members. Appreciate it.
  24. Is anybody else going to tour after Cody roundup? Black owl, and Grandpagak and I are riding to Cody together but after that I'm looking at possibly heading down to the Grand Canyon then Texas way then back up to Iowa. Will be camping along the way. God Bless. Mike
  25. I guess that Utah must have swallowed Goose up, we got a daily report when he was on his high adventure around the Texas border. I hope you are alright buddy. And if you get back in time sneak over to the M&E on the 27th
