VR Assistance

  1. I have an 89 VR. The last I rode it was mid Oct 2010 of which I just finished most of a tank full of seafoam. Did some minor maintenance. The only maintenance ignition and carb related was changed new plugs. It has been on the center stand with a battery tender all this time. I did start it once in the winter and allowed it to warm up really good. That was before I changed the plugs. Got the exact same plugs and cerified the manufactured gap. I turn the key and heard the clicking of what I think is the fuel pump. After 10 seconds the clicking slowed and stopped. I pulled the choke, made sure the run switch was on and then hit the starter. It turns over good. I was expecting that about the 3rd hit to the started I would get some form of life in the V4. The engine did kind of start as I kept on the starter and the choke, but could not sustain it self. I stopped and looked on the floor and saw a large puddle of fluid. I pushed the VR forward then smelled the liquid and yes it is fuel. With it on the side stand I noticed that fuel was leaking by the dampness indicator on the left side. But thats probably because I had put it on the side stand. I removed the left side cover and could see what I think is the mono shock and it looks really wet like fluid is leaking on it. Any suggestions?
  2. we went to look at a 2003 venture ...turn key everything turn ons ...press button to start button and nothing ??? is it a burnt fuse?
  3. I was looking to spark test my plugs while off the bike (84 VR). Outdoor temp has been around -3 to 7C, and I can't get my bike to start. Just did a whole carb overhaul, charged the battery. Plugs have only 3000kms on them. Bike turns over fine, and for long enough before battery too weak, but no start. Took plugs out, and they are wet, so getting gas. Anyway, I have a 10000v transformer, and was wondering if I hooked it up to a plug to see if it is firing, would or could it harm them? Any thoughts Also, would 10000v be enough?
  4. Not even sure if that is the correct term. What I mean is to be able to quickly go back to a thread of interest. I've been kicking around here for almost a year and I STILL haven't figured out how to "subscribe" to a particular thread. Brace yourself....I'm just about ready to start tearing into my 83 blonde! The flood of questions will soon start!
  5. first ride of the year and with new rear tire and steering head bearon, wow that felt good.only did 215 miles but its still a good start. cant wait till next sat for the nc meet and eat.c-me later:bluesbrother:
  6. I have a few questions about the "ignition switch failure". First, let me say mine has not failed. I'm just preparing in case it does. I would like to do the bypass of the switch but before I do I would like to ask a couple of questions. Can you have the bypass wired with a toggle switch ready to use and still start the bike with the key and start button as if the bypass was not there? I have read where some have the bypass in their saddle bag ready in case the failure occurs while on the road. Why not have it in place ready to use if needed? How does the bypass work? I understand all power, except the radio, is lost when you have a failure. Once toggled and power is restored, is the key and start button still used to start the bike? I would assume so but if I knew for sure I would not ask. If not please expalin the starting procedure. When you read this and laugh just know I am ignorant when it comes to this kind of stuff, so go easy on me with your replies. Thanks...
  7. I've got one for you electrically inclined. My cousin's 07 RSV ( with 7000 miles on it) would not start. Let me give you the symptoms. When he turned the key on, the lights came on, the speedometer, gas gauge, everything came up and was doing its thing like its supposed to. When he hit the start button, everything goes dead. Well, he thought it was the 30 amp main fuse cause everything went dead. He pulled the fuse, installed another one and it cranked right up. Okay, this happened a couple of more times, so he ohmed the fuse and it was okay. So, it hadn't been blowing the fuse, the fuse is good, but the only way he can get it to start is pull the main fuse, like its resetting something, put the fuse back in, and then it will start. Its still under warranty and he's going to try to get it into the dealer next week, but I thought I'd run it by you all and see what ya thought. When he takes it to the dealer, I'll let everyone know what they find out. Thanks, Glenn
  8. How many Ventureriders actually tried and why they didn't like the darkside? What front tire do you use? For informational purposes only. Not trying to start something. Please do not reply unless you have actually tried a car tire but didn't like the darkside? Thanks Joe
  9. Hey Guys!---Guess what I found AFTER I broke the white plastic retainer on the throttle?----An adjustment screw just as the cable is coming off the carburator linkage!-----Now my delima is this---Does ANYBODY have a new throttle that I can purchase??---I'm looking on FleaBay but can only find an 83 model with only the on- off button and start button---Mines an 89 with the cruise controls and am not sure I can take the throttle off the 83 and make it work---.................................Thanks for all the advice Guys---and I sure hope someones got one lying around:fingers-crossed-emo.............................................La rry
  10. Or does it seem that nobody bothers to answer their phones anymore? I'm not talking about my friends or relatives either. However some of them don't like to answer their phones either. I'm talking about businesses, employers, etc.. Just to name a couple, I've been trying to reach a guy who contacted me via email about a lab tech. job and he never answers his phone. I keep leaving messages but he doesn't call back. Last summer I had applied for another job not to far from home that payed well. The woman who was in charge of setting up new employee start dates called me but called the wrong number. I got her message about setting up a my start date about 5 days later. I called her asap but she wouldn't return my calls. I got a hold of the main office to explain what happened and I was told I didn't pass their physical. I asked what par of the physical I didn't pass and I was told that the people who performed the physical didn't supply that information. Which sounded fishy seeing as how the message was to discuss my start date. There has been more than one time when I was looking for some goodies of some sort during normal business hours and they didn't answer the phone, I simply left a message that seeing as how there was nobody to answer the phone, I was going to take my business elsewhere. The last tie I was looking for a dentist, I made about 4 calls to different dentists until I got to one that was actually open or bothered to answer the phone. Now I know people get busy or have other issues arise, but it seems to be happening more and more. Ok, ok, enough ranting.I just needed to vent a bit. I've just been looking for a better job and it doesn't seem as though I'm being taken very seriously. I'm glad riding season is almost here! Bill,
  11. With the key off I have power to the clock but as soon as I turn the key to the on position I lose all power. I was having problems with the charging system and I was told to check the plug between the alternator stator and the voltage regulator for burned connections. I accidentally tried to start the bike before plugging this connection back together and it made a weird buzzing sound and that is when this whole loss of power when the key is on problem started. So Now I need to fix this problem before I can finish repairing the charging problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Where to start? I'm kind of at a loss on this one. I tried searching the forums for a similar problem already posted but wasn't able to find one.
  12. Ok last Friday I dumped the bike, I am fine just pissed my scoot isn't in mint condition anymore; although the scraps do add a bit of character. Anyway, I digress, is it normal for a raw gas smell and hard start after a tip over? I assume the answers to both are yes due to the balck magic of carbs. I ask this because as soon as I could get the bike back up and on the center stand I fired her up to confirm there was no case damage. Initial start was fine but about 20 minutes later after a shutdown of a few minutes it took quite a while to start (suppose it was flooded). I did find out the tilt sensor works great though. Anything else I should check before putting her back on the road? Thanks
  13. living here in frozen Arctic circle of Iowa (yeah, it's 32 below 0 ...again).... I start to suffer from brain freeze. It's a terrible disease and happens every year around the end of Feb. It's dark at 5:00, cold, blizzardy, windy, etc, etc. Honest to gosh.....everyone walks around here in a daze for months on end. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, tired all the time, it's miserable. Please don't tell me to move cuz all the family lives within 20 minutes and I would miss them to much. So..............anyway, just wanted to thank you for helping me keep my sense of humor. No computer at home, so the only time I can jump on is during work. Everyday, someone posts something so funny, I end up spitting my coffee out while I'm reading a post. I start laughing so hard, my co worker think I've lost my marbles. All I do is talk, eat, and sleep motorcycles. (I'm sure people where we live think we're nuts) I just really appreciate having this forum so even if the hubby and I can't ride for 6 months out of the year, it helps just to talk about it. So thanks for helping me keep my sanity!

  15. Has anyone put their lights on a switch so one can start the engine without the lights. Then once the engine is running, one can manually put the lights on. In this way one saves battery power in the event one needs to hit the starter more often than normal to get the engine running?
  16. Ice build up tore my gutter down along with some siding ,soffet and facia boards........on the way down it hit 2 of my air conditioners.... 18. Struggling with a little electrical issue and could use some help. I'll give you the background. 1) Noticed that the trip meter would be at zero after I left the bike for a few days between riding. 2) Riding down the road and the dashboard (speedometer, odometer, trip meter) was not on. 3) Shut off the bike and tried to start the bike and the electrical dashboard was erratic and wouldn't start. Turned key back and forth. Turned kill switch back and forth. Light would come on. When I pressed the start button the dash would turn off. Then suddenly the bike started. 4) Drove bike home several hours and shut off and no issues. 5) Took off later that day and no issues. Turned bike off for breif period and tried to turn back on and same issues as #3. Finally started and drove home. NOTE: I did have some electrical work done a couple months on. Rewired riding lights and some rear lights. The gentleman that did the work was quite competent I believe. Appreciate any thoughts you might have. Thanks, Bob
  19. I have not been able to ride in about 12 months, But I would go out and start the bike up at lease once every 2 weeks. Well this week I went to start it this week after about 3 months and I had to replace the battery, I drained the old fuel out. I have fire and gas but it will not start. It acts like it wants to with the choke on but will not start.
  20. I'm already getting bored and feel it won't be long before I get into some type of trouble some way, some how...Hmmmmm..what can I do to keep myself occupied?...and "WHY" would I want to start something .....yes, WHY.........?
  21. When I got to work last night I parked in the garage as normal. Several hours later I came in off the road and noticed the smell of gas. I look around my 2002 RSV and noticed a small wet spot under the left side. Well I thought it must have came from one of the overflow tubes. I decided to start her up. When I hit the start switch it turned over about three times and then just stopped!!! I hit the start switch a few more times and just got a thud. The third time I held it longer and it turned over and started shooting gas out the left side exhaust. It seem to run ok. Hope I make it home. Guess I should do an oil change in case some gas got purged passed the rings down into the crank case. Has anyone had this happen before?
  22. Anyone going to Biketoberfest? I am going up from Brevard County starting Wednesday. I plan on going up each day till Sunday. Even though it does not start until Thursday, I have found it to be fun to go up on Wednesday and do some riding around before it gets crowded. I also like to scope out who is where because the vendors start setting up on Wednesday.
  23. Hey everyone, My bike is having some starting problems, or rather, a starting problem. Yesterday, I went out to start the bike and nothing would turn on, when I turned the ignition. I hooked up some jumper cables and was able to jump the bike. I took it into work, there I went to start it to go home, and the same thing. Except this time it wouldn't take a jump. A few things: 1) The lights on the instrument panel are not turning on, nor any of the electronics (headlights, tail light), when I turn the ignition. 2) The battery is completely charged, I tested it and it is at 100%. 3) We tried to roll start it, and it started up, but it was not firing on all cylinders, nor would it create enough electicity to turn on the instruments or lights. Thanks in advance, -Chubbs
  24. Thought we'd start him on the "little" one...
