  1. For the last couple of weeks, I've heard this jingling/jangling sound coming from low on the left of my '03 Midnight. Sounded like the spring in my side stand had given way and the stand assembly was banging up and down against the frame and/or the pipe. The sound seemed too "tinny" though to be caused by the thick stand arm. I got down and looked around on a couple of different days, and saw nothing. Yesterday (first ride in a week) the rattle was so loud, I pulled off the road, not more than two blocks from the house, to see what HAD to be ready to fall off the bike. Still couldn't see anything hanging down. The sound is VERY annoying (to the point of being DANGEROUS sounding). So now I'm starting to suspect that it's a baffle or some other internal component of the left muffler that's come loose. Sounds like someone installed a stretched out coat-hanger INSIDE the muffler by spot welding it at one end.....and letting the other end dangle against the insides of the muffler can. When I bang the back end of the pipe with my fist, it sounds just as though I were shaking my toaster to try and remove a stuck bagel!! So, tell me........DO the baffles in the stock pipes come free of their welds on a Venture this age? CAN they be welded back in place? (Kinda doubt there's any access from up the pipe!) Lastly, and most apprehensively.......what's the least expensive way out of this problem? Thanks for any words of wisdom, guys.
  2. Looking for ideas as to why 07 RSV with 10,000 miles has been popping when shifting up and when getting off the throttle. Just changed plugs with NKG's and bored out catalytic converter out of RK slip on's. Also removed the middle plate so you can see thru each pipe front to back. Gas milege is still the same, idles fine but get that pop sound. Was running 91 0ctane and just put in 87 octane and it was less today on a 50 mile ride. Any ideas or imput appreciated. Thanks Brian D.
  3. Hi Everyone, My 06 RSTD with 2,000 miles on it now has developed a noise which sounds like the fan is hitting the radiator. It's a metal sound like the fan hitting the radiator but I'm sure it's not. I hear so much about the chirp but this does not sound like a chirp and I only get it at a low rpm. 20 mph in second, 30 mph in third and 40 in 4th. It's only for about a 5 mph range that it does it. So like 3rd is the most noticeable and only from about 29 to 34 mph. Don't know if maybe it's the clutch basket hitting a little at the low rpm. It drives me CRAZY!!!!! Any thoughts???Thanks, Shortrider
  4. Purchased another RSV(1999) and just got it on the road. I was wonder if anyone has the sound that my bike makes. Here is the sound as best I can describe. It is a deep whump whump sound. At first it reminded me of a head gasket leak type of sound. But there are non. It seems to come from the lower front of the motor. None of the mechanics that have worked on the bike have said anything. Motor head son-in-law said it sounded like the cam. Bike runs great just sounds different to me. I have put almost a thousand miles on this bike and want to know if anyone has had similar sounds or issues. Have planned 4000 mile trip this year. Should I be concerned?????
  5. I Hope this isn't a strange request. I'm looking for a set of mufflers off a first gen bike, I don't need the collector box or headers just the mufflers. I want to put them on my XS1100 sidecar rig. The megaphone on it are eaten through and loud as hell. Very uncomfortable to ride so loud because the sound reverbs off the sidecar body making it worst, I like the look and sound of the oem cans and would like to put a set on the 11. if anyone has a set that they've taken off and have lying around I'd be glad to negotiate a price for them. Please let me know aand contact me here. thanks guys Phil.
  6. Riders, I know this topic has been beaten to death but I need to know "from the last related posting" what is the majority of members using for after market mufflers I don't have the metel knowledge to make mods that installing the "road king" mufflers would take.. I don't want LOUD, but I do want that deep rumble sound that will let cagers know I'm there.. Bubs ? " Do the sleepers still have the crome tip issue? Kromeworks ? etc etc Help a fellow rider out 06 RSTD THanks
  7. Here I am with my RoadKing pipes (slip ons) and they have a nice rumble to them when it's cold out but now in the summer heat they are tamed down and sound like all the other RSV.. not bad.. no worries.. But Hmm what if I wanna have a louder sound? Not talking about ear splitting racket but a manly-man sounding bike, ya know? (yes, you know what I mean I keep seeing references on making the RK pipes louder but can't find info how to do it or if it's reversible.. Or would I be better off with a new set of slipons, ones that are meant for the RSV, that offer a nice sound.. The Baron 4-2-4 I've heard and didnt like the look or sound, unfortunately, sorry.. What's everyone else running that they enjoy most? Thanks in advance. Cheers
  8. I noticed yesterday, that when I take off from a stop, there is a popping sound from the rear, or sounds like the rear any way. the sound is almost like if you hold 2 pipes together end for end and then make them pop apart..I plan on checking it out real good this week end, in between all my honey do`s..... could this be the rear splines that I am hearing?? Thanks,
  9. Now i have the internet back i want to thank Condor for the Mac's i got them yesterday and put them on last nite , had to work them a little bit but i won and they look and sound great ! again Thanks Condor ! Thom , 6000 rpm and heads will turn
  10. Hey All, This is Utadventure's son again. Lately I have been working on a project and now that it's done I thought you all would like to see it. I have a bike that did not have a cb installed so I bought an aftermarket one off the internet. After a while I realized that while it was nice to have a cb I would also like to be able to listen to my iPod while on the road. At first I just spliced a headphone cable into a 5pin din plug so I could do this. This didn't last long cause while I could listen to my ipod or my cb I couldn't listen to both cause they interferred with each other and i didn't want to ruin one with the sound coming from the other. What I wanted was a box that I could plug both my ipod and cb into that would swap between the two depending on wich was putting out sound. I checked at WingDing and searched the internet but couldn't find one that was sold seperately. I got together with a neighbor of mine and showed him what it was I was looking to do and together we came up with some plans. The box I built cost me about $35 and a few hours of soldering the components together. The box has 2 inputs and 1 output. Now the inputs could've been anything i wanted but i have a 3.5mm jack and a 5pin din. the 3.5mm jack is normally closed so even if the box is off it will still go through to the output. The 5pin din input is the cb, any time sound comes from the cb it cuts the primary input (ipod). The sensitivity to trip the switch can be changed so that it isn't tripped until the cb is loud enough. I'll be posting pictures with this post. The top has an on/off button, a power indicator light, and a swich indicator light to tell when the secondary input is overriding the primary. I've tested it in the garage, bike running and all, now I just need to take it out on the road.
  11. My RSTC has jardines on it and they sound good. BUT, I am wanting to go to the 4 into 2 style. I have read that some guys have used Harley pipes to do this. Or, are there kit out there for this application. I want a deeper sound than the Jardines, that is why I am researching this. Thanks.
  12. Since this 99 RSV in still fairly new to me, I would like to know if this high pitched tinny sound coming from the engine is a common sound of these units or is something out of adjustment within the engine. I hear it most between 50 and 70 MPH. Reminds me of an old Chevy that I had, and had to occasionly adjust the tappets to reduce the clicking sound. Or, is this something not to be concerned about?
  13. how many of us 2nd genners have the bub exhaust on our scoots? my bub's were on the bike when i bought it almost 5 years ago. they still look and sound good. but just this week i've noticed the right bub is makeing a rattling/tenny sound when warming the bike up. it goes away after a few minutes. i guess i need to repack them. i though i read some where about how to repacking them. best reguards don c.
  14. Hi! I know this has come up several times here...but I just wanted to clarify. My 2000 RSV makes a loud Whining sound but only when throttle is closed...that is once i give it gas or steady gas the noise goes away. Is this the sound I hear so much about that is inherent in the machines or should I be concerned? Thanks in advance for your responses, Highway Star
  15. I just broke the bottom shock bolt on 86 vr. Does anyone have extra bolt, or know where to find.yamaha site says see dealer (doesn't sound good) will call them asap.
  16. Well, my '87 VR is back on the road. BUT one odd thing. I hear a tick from the water pump. It's almost a knock that sounds like if you took a handle of a screwdriver and tapped it against the engine. Can only hear it when on the right side of the bike. It's not the clutch basket rattle that high mileage units can develope. I used my mechanics stethoscope to confirm that it's most certainly is the water-pump. And pulling the clutch lever does not change the sound.. ALL parts in the pump are new including the impellar but not the plastic gear. As it looked to be fine. Yes, Carbs are sync'd. REMEMBER I have not had this on the road for over 2 years. So my memory of how it should sound is rather foggy. It makes this noise the same , cold or hot. I have an oil pressure gauge on the bike...pressure is fine. The sound is there and varies directly w/engine speed. I suspect it could be the pin for the plastic gear on the impellar shaft rocking due to the Ventures naturally uneven firing. BUT I am grasping at straws here. P.S. First time I did the water pump seals on this bike was 20 years ago. SO this is the second time. I even have the Yamaha tool to drive the mechanical seal in correctly. So I really do everything "by the book" Anyone have a firm possibility of the noise source before I disassemble. Or would I be wasting my time taking it apart again for just a noise. Anyone with a reply who has experienced this and if they fixed it or not would be appreciated ..Oh yes, I do see some other threads with info on this. And since syncing the carbs did not change this noise.....................help...
  17. The cost alone may keep me from doing this but I am considering it. I stopped by a local Yamaha dealership the other day looking for advice regarding changing out my Audio system. I use the AM/FM when in my home area and I use my Garmin/XM when out of the range of the local stations. I plug the XM into the Cassette player to use the speakers. As anyone knows who does something similar the sound is not as loud when using this method and according to the people at Yamaha there is not much that can be done about the decreased sound. Something about running one system (XM) thru the Cassette which will always play at a reduced sound. I'm trying to improve the system by looking for a FM I can listeN to at all times BY hitting a scan button. This seems to be a frutless search so far as there appears to be no system to replace the Yamaha stock system. The dealer even sent me to a local place that installs systems in cars and motorcycles and have been doing so for over 25 years. This place pretty much said I need to consider letting them take out the cassette and replacing it with a one piece system that does it all. GPS, Am/FM/CD and who knows what else. They would have to do some cutting to make it fit and a 7 in screen pops out when in use. When you turn it off it disappears back into itself. This system does not pop out for safekeeping. My question is: Will I be sorry installing something like this? Does anyone here have anything similar or have any suggestions? As a nearly 30 year police officer I'm aware of the danger of having something like this on my bike when I'm traveling and can't watch the bike all night when parked. I'm going on a 30- day ride this August and would like some decent sounds.
  18. Hi: I am wondering if anyone could give me their experiences on rear brake life. I have an awful rough scraping sound going on in the rear when applying rear brake. No squealing or anything just the scraping sound. I don't recall it being there last fall when I stored the bike. I had a look at the caliper and it looks liket there is still plenty of pad on the outer side of the disc. I could not get a good look at the inside though. The rotor feels a bit torn up on the inside surface as well, especially around the holes. I now have about 23,000 kms (or about 15,000 miles). It may be that the brakes are worn out already, but i thought they should last longer than that. Any help or comments from other 2nd gen riders appreciated! Cheers spaceman
  19. Theres is a hollow rattling sound coming from front left of (05 XVZ 1300 ct) motor at medium revs dose some one have an idea on what it mite be or where it mite be coming from Thanks PIPER
  20. Here's the deal: About got smacked by a truck coming over on me the other day. Had my adult daughter on the back so didn't want to do big time evasive maneuvers. The cager (Ford F150) started coming left. I made eye contact with him in his mirror. He knew I was there but he was bigger and kept on coming. I got on the brakes and the wonderful dual tone factory horns (what a joke Yamaha played on us). Cager came on over, shot me the bird, and continued on up the road. I got home, found a Fiam horn I had. I disconnected my chrome horn down by my right foot and connected the Fiam. Hit the button and only heard a slight bump sound. :fiddle:So, I disconnected the front horn behind the fairing and hit the button again. Same result. Took the Fiam and connected it straight to a battery. Perfect loud sound. I guess I'm getting too much voltage drop to use it on the Venture, but wouldn't think so. Have an identical Fiam horn on my V Star 650 and it works fine. Anyone else try this?
  21. I've brought part of this problem up before but I have a follow up now. My AM/FM has plenty of sound thru the external speakers. At highway speed (60-65) I only need to turn the sound to 17 or 18 to hear it fine. When I switch to XM which is on my GPS (Garmin) the sound is nowhere as loud. I can turn it up to the max at 30 and at highway speed I can barely hear it. Same way when it's run thru the helmet speakers before I got a new helmet. My question now. If I get an MP3 player for my upcoming 30 day ride will the MP 3 be like the GPS/XM since it also plays thru the cassette player or will it be as loud as the FM? I may not get the MP 3 and waste my money if I can barely hear it.
  22. Can someone point me a thread that show modifiying to RK pipes for a little more sound. I just put a set on my '08 RSTD would like a little more sound, not much more though. The pipes did not have the cat. Converters in them. Thanks!
  23. i have a 99 rsv and today while riding the raidio sound stoped. and when i pulled over you could hear it but very low and the volume nob made no diff after a while it will start to work. any help would be great thanks.
  24. Any experience out there with LA Choppers Slip ons. They look good with the black tips, but I have no comparison with the sound compared to BUBS Sleepers or Khromewerks Brand.
  25. I have a nice 84 VR with only 33000 original miles that I have taken from mass to Florida via Skyline Drive and the BlueRidge parkway and it has a nice quiet exhaust exept it keeps coming loose. I found someone selling an original Yamaha replacement slip on mufflers for the VR and Vmax that were used and he said they were rich in sound and had a nice rumble. Well they work AWSOME but I can no longer listen to my radio but my water temp is alot cooler and the pickup is awsome. This without rejetting I love the sound and accelleration but I don't know if the people next to me will like me. I have had many bikes and this is the first that an exhaust has made a big difference. So should I put the old ones on and keep peace or ride like hell. TOM
